The association between non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) and prevalence of periodontitis among US adults: a cross-sectional NHANES study. Abstract
The non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) is a recently developed lipid parameter, but there is currently a lack of research exploring its relationship with periodontitis. This study aims to identify the potential association between NHHR and periodontitis. The association between NHHR and periodontitis were examined through univariate and multivariate weighted logistic regression utilizing the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2009 to 2014. The participants were grouped based on the type of periodontitis. This study included a total of 9023 participants, with 1947 individuals having no periodontitis, and an additional 7076 individuals suffering from periodontitis. Patients in periodontitis group demonstrated a statistically significant elevation in NHHR values 2.82 (2.05-3.80) compared to those in no periodontitis group (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis of variables demonstrated a positive association between NHHR and periodontitis [1.07 (1.02, 1.12) p = 0.0067]. The study revealed a positive association between NHHR and an elevated prevalence of periodontitis development. For each unit increase in NHHR, there is a 7% increase in the prevalence of periodontitis. Further investigations into NHHR may enhance our understanding of preventing and treating periodontitis. However, additional studies are required to validate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Depression is a common and complex psychiatric disorder, and lipid metabolism plays an important role in the development of psychiatric disorders such as depression. Cardiometabolic index (CMI) is a novel index that synthesizes two quantitative indicators of blood lipids (triglyceride(TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)) and human obesity-related parameters (waist height ratio (WHtR)). This study used NHANES data to explore the correlation between CMI and the incidence of depression. METHODS AND RESULTS Based on the data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018, multivariate logistic regression, sensitivity analysis, and smooth curve fitting were used to study the relationship between CMI and depression. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were used to investigate whether the association was stable in different populations. CMI was positively associated with depression in 7229 participants aged >20 years. In the fully adjusted model, each unit increase in CMI was associated with 36 % higher likelihood of depression symptoms [1.36(1.16,1.59)]. Participants in the highest quartile of CMI had a 62 % higher risk of depression than participants in the lowest quartile [1.62(1.17,2.23)]. This positive correlation was more pronounced in those with hypertension. CONCLUSIONS CMI was associated with a higher PHQ-9 score and an increased likelihood of depression among US adults. Further large-scale prospective studies are still need to analyze the role of CMI in depression.

Abstract
Number connection test A (NCT-A) and digit symbol test (DST), the preferential neuropsychological tests to detect minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) in China, haven't been standardized in Chinese population. We aimed to establish the norms based on a multi-center cross-sectional study and to detect MHE in cirrhotic patients. NCT-A and DST were administered to 648 healthy controls and 1665 cirrhotic patients. The regression-based procedure was applied to develop demographically adjusted norms for NCT-A and DST based on healthy controls. Age, gender, education, and age by education interaction were all predictors of DST, while age, gender, and education by gender interaction were predictors of log10 NCT-A. The predictive equations for expected scores of NCT-A and DST were established, and Z-scores were calculated. The norm for NCT-A was set as Z ≤ 1.64, while the norm for DST was set as Z ≥ - 1.64. Cirrhotic patients with concurrent abnormal NCT-A and DST results were diagnosed with MHE. The prevalence of MHE was 8.89% in cirrhotic patients, and only worse Child-Pugh classification (P = 0.002, OR = 2.389) was demonstrated to be the risk factor for MHE. The regression-based normative data of NCT-A and DST have been developed to detect MHE in China. A significant proportion of Chinese cirrhotic patients suffered from MHE, especially those with worse Child-Pugh classification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been previously reported. Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) has better diagnostic performance than ultrasonography for assessing hepatic steatosis. The association of SUA with hepatic steatosis detected by CAP is worth further study. METHODS The US population aged 20 years or older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was assessed. Hepatic steatosis was evaluated by the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). NAFLD status was defined as CAP values of 268 dB/m without hepatitis B or C virus infection or considerable alcohol consumption. Multiple imputations were performed to fill in the missing covariate values. Linear regression, logistic regression, and smooth curve fitting were used to examine the association. RESULTS In total, 3919 individuals participated in this study. There was a positive association between SUA (µmol/L) and CAP (β = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.12-0.17, P < 0.01). After stratification by sex, a significant relationship between SUA and CAP existed in both males (β = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.09-0.16, P < 0.01) and females (β = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.14-0.20, P < 0.01) after multiple imputation. The inflection points of the threshold effect of SUA on CAP were 487.7 µmol/L in males and 386.6 µmol/L in females. There was a positive association between SUA (mg/dL) and NAFLD (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.23-1.37, P < 0.01). After stratification by race, positive relationships were also observed. Meanwhile, a positive relationship existed between hyperuricemia and NAFLD (OR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.64-2.30, P < 0.01). The positive relationship was more significant in females than in males (P for interaction < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS There was a positive association between SUA and CAP, as well as between SUA and NAFLD. Subgroup studies stratified by sex and ethnicity demonstrated that the effects were consistent.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to explore the relationship between the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using NHANES from 1999 to 2018. METHODS We collected data from the NHANES database from 1999 to 2018. The SII is calculated from the counts of lymphocytes (LC), neutrophils (NC), and platelets (PC). The RA patients were derived from questionnaire data. We used weighted multivariate regression analysis and subgroup analysis to explore the relationship between SII and RA. Furthermore, the restricted cubic splines were used to explore the non-linear relationships. RESULT Our study included a total of 37,604 patients, of which 2642 (7.03%) had rheumatoid arthritis. After adjusting for all covariates, the multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that high SII (In-transform) levels were associated with an increased likelihood of rheumatoid arthritis (OR=1.167, 95% CI=1.025-1.328, P=0.020). The interaction test revealed no significant effect on this connection. In the restricted cubic spline regression model, the relationship between ln-SII and RA was non-linear. The cutoff value of SII for RA was 578.25. The risk of rheumatoid arthritis increases rapidly when SII exceeds the cutoff value. CONCLUSION In general, there is a positive correlation between SII and rheumatoid arthritis. Our study shows that SII is a novel, valuable, and convenient inflammatory marker that can be used to predict the risk of rheumatoid arthritis in US adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Folate is considered to be related to lipid metabolism. With the increasing numbers of folic acid fortification nations, the associations of dietary folate and serum folate with lipid profiles deserve more attention and are worth further study. METHODS US adults aged ≥ 20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were evaluated. Participants taking folic acid supplements were excluded. The multivariate linear regression model and smooth curve fitting were applied to assess the associations. The segmented regression model was employed to examine the threshold effect of nonlinear relationships. RESULTS Our cross-sectional study included 3706 participants in total. There was a negative relationship between serum folate (log transformed) and triglycerides (β = -0.223, 95% CI: -0.337, -0.110) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (β = -0.152, 95% CI: -0.296, -0.007) and a positive relationship between serum folate (log transformed) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (β = 0.090, 95% CI: 0.033,0.146). There was a negative association between dietary folate (log transformed) and total cholesterol (TC) (β = -0.299, 95% CI: -0.465, -0.134) and LDL-C (β = -0.266, 95% CI: -0.409, -0.123). A nonlinear relationship was found between dietary folate (log transformed) and HDL-C. Threshold effect analysis showed that the inflection point was 377.57 ug. Within the inflection point, the β-coefficient of HDL-C was 0.105 (95% CI: 0.018, 0.192); beyond the inflection point, there was no relationship (β = -0.067, 95% CI: -0.162, 0.028). CONCLUSIONS Optimal dietary folate and high serum folate were associated with favorable lipid profiles. Dietary folate, in the recommended 300-400 ug/d, had a beneficial effect on improving lipid profiles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Serum uric acid (SUA) may play a role in heart failure (HF). Our study was to find relationships between SUA and the prevalence of HF due to acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and the ethnic-specific relationship between them in an inpatient population. METHODS AND RESULTS We analyzed 1075 Chinese ACS patients. SUA levels were cut to four groups as Q1 to Q4, according to quartiles. Binary logistic regression models were used to assess associations of SUA with HF due to ACS. Subgroup analysis was performed to find ethnic-specific association between SUA and HF due to ACS. We also performed univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses taking into account an Italian's cut-off for SUA for HF prognosis stratification. After adjustment for all potential confounders, compared to the lowest quartile, quartiles 2, 3 and 4 had a prevalence OR of 0.69 (0.44-1.08), 1.06 (0.67-1.67) and 2.19 (1.35-3.56), respectively, for the HF due to ACS (p for trend <0.001). Subgroup analyses didn't reveal an ethnic-specific differences between SUA and HF due to ACS. In Han, the highest SUA level was significantly associated with the risk of HF due to ACS. OR with 95%CI for Q4 was 1.85 (1.02-3.37), Q1 as a reference. For Mongolians, the OR with 95%CI for Q4 was 6.82 (1.90-24.50), Q1 as a reference. CONCLUSION We found positive associations between SUA and the prevalence of HF due to ACS among Chinese patients. No differences exist regarding ethnicity.

Abstract
PURPOSE The primary objective of this study was to evaluate knowledge and behavior of medication use among guardians of left-behind children (LBC) and non-left-behind children (NLBC). METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Chengdu, the major city of southwestern China from May 2020 to August 2020. A logistic regression model was conducted to assess medication-related knowledge and behavior of guardians between the LBC group and NLBC group, adjusted for confounders. Stratified analysis was further performed. RESULTS The overall mean scores for knowledge and for behavior were 20.22 (standard deviation = 4.472) and 15.77 (standard deviation = 3.604), respectively. No significant difference was found in medication-related knowledge and behavior scores between LBC and NLBC guardians (P > 0.05). A significant difference was only observed after adjusting for past medical history and history of present illness (HPI). CONCLUSION There was no significant difference in the awareness and behavior of medication use between guardians of LBC and NLBC in this study, having more contact with the doctor was an effective method of health education that could possibly improve their health literacy.

Abstract
Objective This study investigates the current situation and influencing factors of the nursing practice environment in Shenzhen, China, and provides suggestions for improving it. Background Nursing shortage is an urgent global problem and also of concern in China. Studies have shown that better work environments are related to high job satisfaction and better patient outcomes. Methods The 37-item Practice Environment Scale was used to assess the nursing practice environment. Respondents were 1116 nurses from five general tertiary hospitals in Shenzhen. Results The mean satisfaction score for the nursing practice environment was 3.63 ± 0.72 (where 5 is the highest possible score). Position, being a specialist nurse, choice of nursing major, educational attainment, and night shifts significantly affected nurses' working environment satisfaction. Conclusion The practice environment of nurses was satisfactory. We recommend reducing the workload and encouraging nurses to complete specialist training, and supporting nurses to expand their roles in hospitals and society to improve the nursing practice environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Consumption of high fructose corn syrup sweetened drinks and diet soft drinks has increased in the United States. However, the relationship between the intake of high fructose corn syrup sweetened drinks and diet soft drinks, and serum sodium has been scarcely studied. Our objective is to evaluate the relation between intake of high fructose corn syrup sweetened drinks and diet soft drinks, and serum sodium, and explore the possible effect modifiers in a nationally representative sample of adults from the United States. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2006. The study participants included 6989 adults aged ≥18 years. Using survey-weighted generalized linear regression analyses, we investigated the relationship between high fructose corn syrup sweetened drink, diet soft drink consumption, and serum sodium. Consumption of high fructose corn syrup sweetened drinks and diet soft drinks was evaluated through a food-frequency questionnaire. RESULTS Serum sodium levels increased as high fructose corn syrup sweetened drink intake increased. Serum sodium levels were higher in participants in the highest high fructose corn syrup sweetened drink consumption quantile, compared with those in the lowest high fructose corn syrup sweetened drink intake quantile (p = 0.020). The multivariate betas for serum sodium, according to the corresponding high fructose corn syrup sweetened drink intake quantiles, were 0.16, 0.19, and 0.21, respectively (P for trend = 0.051). We found no relationship between diet soft drink consumption and serum sodium after adjustment of confounding. (multivariate P > 0.05). CONCLUSION There was a a step-wise increase in serum sodium concentration with increasing consumption of HFCS sweetened beverages. Even moderate HFCS sweetened soft drink intake was associated with an elevated serum sodium level - a risk factor for hypertension.

Abstract
The purpose of this article was to investigate the association between the ubiquitin-associated domain-containing protein 2 (UBAC2) gene polymorphism and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and to further explore the role of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in UBAC2 in NIHL. A case control study involving 660 NIHL cases and 581 controls was conducted in this research. After genotyping by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with next-generation sequencing, the correlation between SNPs and NIHL was analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Haplotype analysis was performed by Haploview 4.1 software. Then luciferase reporter assays and siRNA were used to explore the mechanism of SNPs in UBAC2 affecting NIHL susceptibility. The correlation analysis showed that rs3825427 AA genotype, rs9517701 GG genotype, rs7999348 GG genotype, and rs2296860 AA genotype were all associated with increased risk of NIHL (P < 0.05). The haplotype AGGA (rs3825427-rs9517701-rs7999348-rs2296860) also had a higher risk of NIHL (OR = 1.314; 95% CI, 1.098-1.572; P = 0.003). The results of the luciferase reporter assays showed that the fluorescence intensity of CTCF-OE + UBAC2 WT + TK was significantly higher than that of CTCF-NC + UBAC2 WT + TK and CTCF-OE + UBAC2 MT + TK (all P < 0.01). In CTCF knockdown cells, the expression of UBAC2 was also significantly downregulated (P = 0.0038), indicating that the transcription factor CTCF positively regulated the expression of UBAC2 and the rs3825427 C allele acted as an enhancer, which can promote CTCF to bind to the promoter of UBAC2, thereby promoting transcription. UBAC2 gene polymorphism is related to NIHL susceptibility. The UBAC2 rs3825427 regulates the expression level of UBAC2 by affecting the combination of CTCF and DNA, thus affecting the susceptibility of NIHL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that hyperuricemia is involved in diabetes, obesity, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and other diseases. At the same time, studies have shown that vitamin D3 levels in the body are linked to the onset of diabetes. However, there is currently no sufficient evidence to prove whether this connection is affected by the uric acid level. Therefore, we attempted to investigate the association between vitamin D3 content and the occurrence of diabetes in populations with different uric acid levels though the data of NHANES database from 2009 to 2018. METHOD Using the NHANES database, we performed a cross-sectional analysis. The participants were chosen based on stringent inclusion and exclusion requirements. This study finally included a total number of 16,735 individuals. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association between vitamin D3 and diabetes mellitus in hyperuricemia and non-hyperuricemia patients after complete adjustment, and multivariate linear regression analysis was used to illustrate the association between vitamin D3 and uric acid. RESULT The results showed that the association between vitamin D3 and diabetes was weakened in hyperuricemia patients (OR 0.95 (0.92,0.98)). An independent association was discovered between vitamin D3 and uric acid (β -0.12 (-0.16, -0.07)) in all groups of population. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that vitamin D3 content is associated with the incidence of diabetes in people with high level of uric acid. This study offers a fresh perspective on the elements that influence the etiology of diabetes in hyperuricemia patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prior studies have focused only on the temporal component of one-leg standing, no reports have examined the relationship between the qualitative components of one-leg standing and femoral BMD. Thus, this study investigated whether quality (i.e., movement control) of one-leg standing also associated femoral BMD. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 80 patients with unilateral hip fracture were included in a cross-sectional study. Basic and medical information and physical functions including movement control during one-leg standing were assessed at admission and 2 weeks after surgery, respectively. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of femoral BMDs on the non-fractured side. Dependent variables included femoral neck and total hip BMDs in models 1 and 2, respectively. RESULTS Hierarchical multiple regression analysis (standardized partial regression coefficients) in model 1 identified age (- 0.18), sex (0.38), body mass index (BMI) (0.41), movement control during one-leg standing on the non-fractured side (0.19), and life-space assessment (0.17) as factors associating femoral neck BMD. Meanwhile, hierarchical multiple regression analysis (standardized partial regression coefficients) in model 2 identified age (- 0.12), sex (0.36), BMI (0.37), and movement control during one-leg standing on the non-fractured side (0.25) as factors associating total hip BMD. The coefficients of determination adjusted for degrees of freedom (R2) were 0.529 and 0.470 for models 1 and 2, respectively. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that improving movement control during one-leg standing may be important for maintaining and improving femoral BMD on the non-fractured side.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Metabolic syndrome and the presence of metabolic syndrome components are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the association between personality traits and metabolic syndrome remains controversial, and few studies have been conducted in East Asian populations. METHODS We measured personality traits using the Japanese version of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (Revised Short Form) and five metabolic syndrome components-elevated waist circumference, elevated triglycerides, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose-in 1322 participants aged 51.1±12.7years old from Kakegawa city, Japan. Metabolic syndrome score (MS score) was defined as the number of metabolic syndrome components present, and metabolic syndrome as having the MS score of 3 or higher. We performed multiple logistic regression analyses to examine the relationship between personality traits and metabolic syndrome components and multiple regression analyses to examine the relationship between personality traits and MS scores adjusted for age, sex, education, income, smoking status, alcohol use, and family history of CVD and diabetes mellitus. We also examine the relationship between personality traits and metabolic syndrome presence by multiple logistic regression analyses. RESULTS "Extraversion" scores were higher in those with metabolic syndrome components (elevated waist circumference: P=0.001; elevated triglycerides: P=0.01; elevated blood pressure: P=0.004; elevated fasting glucose: P=0.002). "Extraversion" was associated with the MS score (coefficient=0.12, P=0.0003). No personality trait was significantly associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS Higher "extraversion" scores were related to higher MS scores, but no personality trait was significantly associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome.
