How accentuation influences the processing of emotional words in spoken language: An ERP study

Pitch accent marks information structure in utterances in many languages but little is known about the effects of accent on the perception of emotional word meaning. The present study explored the processing of accentuation and its influence on the semantic integration of emotional words during spoken sentence comprehension. Twenty-five participants were presented with sets of spoken Chinese sentences while accentuation and emotional meaning of the adjectives were orthogonally manipulated. An implicit task required the recognition of words contained in the sentences, whereas an explicit task required judging the presence of an accented or emotional word. In the ERPs to the adjectives, accentuation induced a long-lasting anterior negativity starting around 150-250 ms and a late posterior positivity. More importantly, emotionally negative words elicited larger negativities between 300 and 700 ms as compared to neutral words but only when they were accented. Interestingly, these negativities showed a parietal N400-typical distribution when accent was implicit but strongly overlapped with the accent-induced anterior negativity when accent was task-relevant. Hence, accentuation may enable the processing of emotional meaning by directing attention towards the accented words. When accent and emotion are explicit parts of the task, similar frontal attentional networks are activated by emotion as by accent alone. In contrast, when accent and emotion are implicit to the task, emotion appears to merely activate parietal networks, typical for semantic integration effects. Together, these results suggest that accentuation plays an important role in spoken sentence comprehension, deserving further study.

The effect of shared distinctiveness on source memory: An event-related potential study

An illusory correlation (IC) is the erroneous perception that two actually uncorrelated categories are correlated. The Shared Distinctiveness Approach (SDA) explains ICs with heightened accessibility of distinctive category combinations in episodic memory. However, empirical evidence for this approach is heterogeneous. In the present event-related potential (ERP) study, we exploited the fact that more distinctive items elicit larger P300 responses than less distinctive items, which potentially predict subsequent memory performance differences for such items. Distinctiveness at encoding was created by presenting words that differed from frequently presented, positive words in valence, font color, or both. We hypothesized that shared distinctiveness (deviation in both color and valence) would lead to an enhanced P300 subsequent memory effect (SME), better source memory performance, and an overestimation of the frequency of shared distinctive items. Behavioral results indicated the presence of shared distinctiveness effects on source memory and frequency estimation. Unexpectedly, memory also was enhanced for positive items in the frequent color. This pattern also was reflected in the P300 for highly positive and negative items. However, shared distinctiveness did not modulate the P300 SME, indicating that the processing of distinctive features might only indirectly contribute to better encoding. This study shows that shared distinctiveness indeed is associated with better source memory and ICs. Because effects were observed for the most frequent and the least frequent category combination, our results imply that the processing of distinctiveness might involve attention allocation to diametrical category combinations, thereby accentuating the differences between the categories.

Choosing or rejecting a food item, does framing matter? And what has sugar to do with it!

The color code of "Traffic Light Labels" (TLL) on food items indicates the amount (e.g., green = low) of fat, saturates, sugar and salt it contains. Consider two ways to select among food items (e.g., two cereal bars) based on their TLLs. You might choose between the two items or you might reject one of the two. Furthermore, differences between choose and reject might be driven more strongly by one factor (e.g., sugar) than by others. In Study 1 our participants made choose or reject decisions between food items with an all-orange TLL (all moderate) and a 2 red/2 green TLL (2 negative/2 positive). Both items had equal energy/caloric content. We found that, independent of the condition (Choose/Reject), participants went home more often with the 2 red/2 green item if sugar was green. This effect was stronger in the Choose than in the Reject condition. In Study 2, we additionally manipulated the energy content (low, high) of the items. In the case where both food items had a low energy content, similar results as in Study 1 were observed. If either or both items had high energy content, the choose/reject interaction with sugar disappeared. Only differences in energy content played a role in the reject condition. Overall, our results can be better explained by an "accentuation hypothesis" than by a "compatibility hypothesis". These findings could be used by choice architects to fight the current obesity crisis.

How and when predictability interacts with accentuation in temporally selective attention during speech comprehension

The present study used EEG to investigate how and when top-down prediction interacts with bottom-up acoustic signals in temporally selective attention during speech comprehension. Mandarin Chinese spoken sentences were used as stimuli. We systematically manipulated the predictability and de/accentuation of the critical words in the sentence context. Meanwhile, a linguistic attention probe 'ba' was presented concurrently with the critical words or not. The results showed that, first, words with a linguistic attention probe elicited a larger N1 than those without a probe. The latency of this N1 effect was shortened for accented or lowly predictable words, indicating more attentional resources allocated to these words. Importantly, prediction and accentuation showed a complementary interplay on the latency of this N1 effect, demonstrating that when the words had already attracted attention due to low predictability or due to the presence of pitch accent, the other factor did not modulate attention allocation anymore. Second, relative to the lowly predictable words, the highly predictable words elicited a reduced N400 and enhanced gamma-band power increases, especially under the accented conditions; moreover, under the accented conditions, shorter N1 peak-latency was found to correlate with larger gamma-band power enhancement, which indicates that a close relationship might exist between early selective attention and later semantic integration. Finally, the interaction between top-down selective attention (driven by prediction) and bottom-up selective attention (driven by accentuation) occurred before lexical-semantic processing, namely before the N400 effect evoked by predictability, which was discussed with regard to the language comprehension models.

Accentuate or repeat? Brain signatures of developmental periods in infant word recognition

Language acquisition has long been discussed as an interaction between biological preconditions and environmental input. This general interaction seems particularly salient in lexical acquisition, where infants are already able to detect unknown words in sentences at 7 months of age, guided by phonological and statistical information in the speech input. While this information results from the linguistic structure of a given language, infants also exploit situational information, such as speakers' additional word accentuation and word repetition. The current study investigated the developmental trajectory of infants' sensitivity to these two situational input cues in word recognition. Testing infants at 6, 9, and 12 months of age, we hypothesized that different age groups are differentially sensitive to accentuation and repetition. In a familiarization-test paradigm, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) revealed age-related differences in infants' word recognition as a function of situational input cues: at 6 months infants only recognized previously accentuated words, at 9 months both accentuation and repetition played a role, while at 12 months only repetition was effective. These developmental changes are suggested to result from infants' advancing linguistic experience and parallel auditory cortex maturation. Our data indicate very narrow and specific input-sensitive periods in infant word recognition, with accentuation being effective prior to repetition.
