Can In-Task Affect During Interval and Continuous Exercise Predict 12-Month Physical Activity Behavior? Findings from a Randomized Trial

BACKGROUND

In-task affective responses to moderate-intensity continuous exercise training (MICT) have been shown to predict future physical activity behavior. However, limited research has investigated whether this affect-behavior relationship is similar for high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and whether it holds true over the longer term. This study aims to determine (1) if in-task affect during 2 weeks of supervised MICT and HIIT predicted changes to unsupervised moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) behavior 12 months post-intervention and (2) if this predictive relationship was moderated by exercise type (MICT vs. HIIT).

METHOD

Ninety-nine adults (69.7% female; 50.9 ± 9.4 years) who were low active and overweight were randomized to 2 weeks of exercise training of MICT (n = 52) or HIIT (n = 47), followed by 12 months of accelerometry-assessed free-living MVPA.

RESULTS

The pooled moderation model was not significant, F(3, 94) = 2.54, p = .07 (R2 = 0.085), with a non-significant group by affect interaction (p = .06). The conditional effect for MICT was significant (B = 17.27, t = 2.17, p = .03), suggesting that 12-month change in MVPA increased by 17.27 min/week for every one-point increase in in-task affect. The conditional effect for HIIT was not significant (p = .85), suggesting that in-task affect was not predictive of 12-month change in MVPA.

CONCLUSION

The current findings raise important questions about whether the affect-behavior relationship may vary depending on exercise type. For HIIT-based exercise in particular, additional psychological constructs beyond in-task affect should be considered when attempting to predict future physical activity behavior.

Feelings of fear, sadness, and loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic: Findings from two studies in the UK

During the COVID-19 pandemic, exposure to COVID-related stimuli, has been enormous. Exposure to threat-related stimuli, can have a significant impact on people's wellbeing particularly in relation to COVID-related anxiety. The present research comprises two empirical studies. In Study 1, a newly developed Emotional Stroop Task (EST) and an Image Rating Task (IRT) were used to assess, automatic and non-automatic affective responses to COVID-related words and images during the first wave of the pandemic in the UK general population. In Study 2, the same tasks were used to evaluate the affective responses of University students during the second wave of the pandemic. Additionally, loneliness and pro-social behaviours were explored in relation COVID-related anxiety in the same population. Overall, the results showed that automatic affective responses as measured by interference effects on the EST, remained unaffected during the pandemic. However, non-automatic affective responses to COVID-related images measured by the IRT, indicated that participants rated these images as more fearful sadder and higher in anger, compared to non-COVID negative images matched for arousal and negativity and this was more evident in people with high COVID-anxiety. Trait anxiety was related to higher levels of loneliness, more prosocial behaviour and higher intentions to help others, while COVID-related anxiety mediated these effects, suggesting that for high levels of trait anxiety, participants were more likely to have helped someone in need during the pandemic when their COVID-anxiety levels were low.

Audience facial expressions detected by automated face analysis software reflect emotions in music

An abundance of studies on emotional experiences in response to music have been published over the past decades, however, most have been carried out in controlled laboratory settings and rely on subjective reports. Facial expressions have been occasionally assessed but measured using intrusive methods such as facial electromyography (fEMG). The present study investigated emotional experiences of fifty participants in a live concert. Our aims were to explore whether automated face analysis could detect facial expressions of emotion in a group of people in an ecologically valid listening context, to determine whether emotions expressed by the music predicted specific facial expressions and examine whether facial expressions of emotion could be used to predict subjective ratings of pleasantness and activation. During the concert, participants were filmed and facial expressions were subsequently analyzed with automated face analysis software. Self-report on participants’ subjective experience of pleasantness and activation were collected after the concert for all pieces (two happy, two sad). Our results show that the pieces that expressed sadness resulted in more facial expressions of sadness (compared to happiness), whereas the pieces that expressed happiness resulted in more facial expressions of happiness (compared to sadness). Differences for other facial expression categories (anger, fear, surprise, disgust, and neutral) were not found. Independent of the musical piece or emotion expressed in the music facial expressions of happiness predicted ratings of subjectively felt pleasantness, whilst facial expressions of sadness and disgust predicted low and high ratings of subjectively felt activation, respectively. Together, our results show that non-invasive measurements of audience facial expressions in a naturalistic concert setting are indicative of emotions expressed by the music, and the subjective experiences of the audience members themselves.

Neural signatures of parental empathic responses to imagined suffering of their adolescent child

Empathy is deemed indispensable for sensitive caregiving. Neuroimaging studies have identified canonical empathy networks consisting of regions supporting cognitive and affective aspects of empathy. However, not much is known about how these regions support empathy towards one's own offspring and how this neural activity relates to parental caregiving. We introduce a novel task to assess affective and neural responses to the suffering of one's own adolescent child. While in the scanner, 60 parents (n = 35 mothers, n = 25 fathers) were confronted with unpleasant situations involving their own child, an unfamiliar child, and themselves. Parents were asked to vividly imagine these situations and indicate their levels of distress. Parents reported higher levels of distress when imagining suffering for their own child relative to an unfamiliar child or themselves. Neuroimaging results showed increased activation within the cognitive empathy network (i.e., temporoparietal junction, dorsomedial- and ventromedial prefrontal cortex) when contrasting suffering of one's own child versus an unfamiliar child or the self. The task also engaged regions of the affective empathy network (i.e., anterior insula and anterior mid-cingulate cortex), which was however not modulated by whether suffering was for the self, one's own child, or an unfamiliar child. Parental care did not co-vary with activity in the empathy networks, but parents who were perceived as less caring exhibited increased activity in anterior prefrontal regions when imagining their own child suffering. These results provide new insights into neural processes supporting parental empathy, highlighting the importance of regions in the cognitive empathy network when confronted with the suffering of their own adolescent child, and suggest that additional (i.e., emotion regulation) networks may be relevant for parental caring behavior in daily life.

Interference with the renin-angiotensin system reduces the palatability of 0.3 M NaCl in sodium-deplete rats

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) controls hypertonic NaCl intake driven by sodium appetite. Here we investigated whether the antagonism of RAS interferes with hedonic and aversive orofacial motor responses, or palatability, to intraoral infusion of 0.3 M NaCl (hNaCl). Adult rats were depleted of sodium by combined sc injection of furosemide and 24 h removal of ambient sodium. In experiment 1, losartan (AT1 angiotensin II receptor antagonist, intracerebroventricular, 200 μg/μl), produced a three-fold increase in aversive orofacial motor responses to hNaCl. Losartan also suppressed hNaCl intake recorded immediately thereafter. In experiment 2, each animal had repeated recordings of hNaCl intake and orofacial responses to hNaCl distributed for 180 min. Paired recordings of intake and orofacial responses occurred within five successive blocks after the recordings of only orofacial responses when the animals were still sodium deplete (block zero). Captopril (angiotensin converting enzyme blocker, intraperitoneal, 30 mg/kg) inhibited by 75% the hedonic orofacial responses to hNaCl in blocks zero and 1. The hedonic responses to captopril remained the same throughout blocks, but became similar to vehicle from blocks 2 to 5. There was no difference in aversive responses to 0.3 M NaCl between captopril and vehicle. Captopril produced a 70-100% inhibition of hNaCl intake in blocks 1 to 5. The results suggest that angiotensin II acts in the brain increasing the palatability of hypertonic sodium during the consummatory phase of sodium appetite.

Age-specific affective responses and self-efficacy to acute high-intensity interval training and continuous exercise in insufficiently active young and middle-aged men

Background/objective

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been recognized as an emerging trend in public health promotion, but its age-specific differences in psycho-perceptual responses have yet to be investigated. This study compared the psycho-perceptual responses after a single session of HIIT versus moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) and vigorous-intensity continuous exercise (VICE) in twelve young and twelve middle-aged insufficiently active males respectively.

Methods

Using a randomized cross-over design, participants undertook three main trials consisting of: HIIT (10 x 1-min run at 100% VO_2max interspersed with 1-min active recovery), MICE (40-min run at 65% VO_2max) and VICE (20-min run at 80% VO_2max). Affective responses, self-efficacy and exercise preference were assessed for each trial.

Results

Both HIIT and VICE showed more positive in-task affective responses than MICE in young adults, while middle-aged adults reported more positive responses in both HIIT and MICE than in VICE. However, middle-aged adults displayed significantly lower exercise task self-efficacy scores towards HIIT (42.7 ± 25.3) and VICE (49.2 ± 23.9) than MICE (63.4 ± 18.3, both P < 0.01). Additionally, only 17% of participants in the middle-aged group reported a preference to engage in HIIT as opposed to either MICE (50%) and VICE (33%).

Conclusion

Our finding revealed distinct affective and self-efficacy responses to acute HIIT versus both MICE and VICE in the two age groups which assists in our understanding of how individuals in various age populations perceive HIIT. This information will assist in the design and implementation of effective exercise programs for public health, especially for insufficiently active individuals.

Effect of a 12-week aerobic training program on perceptual and affective responses in obese women

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to observe the effect of self-selected intensity or imposed intensity during aerobic training on perceptual and affective responses in obese women. [Subjects] The study included 26 obese women aged 30–60 years. [Methods] The subjects were randomly divided into two groups, with 13 subjects in each group: self-selected intensity and imposed intensity (10% above ventilatory threshold) groups. All subjects completed an intervention program that lasted 12 weeks, with three exercise sessions a week. The rating of perceived exertion and affective responses (Feeling Scale and Felt Arousal Scale) were monitored in the first, sixth, and twelfth weeks. [Results] Significant differences were observed between groups in heart rate and rating of perceived exertion. The affective responses during exercise were more negative in the imposed intensity group. [Conclusion] Use of a self-selected exercise intensity can promote smaller negative affective responses during exercise and provide a sufficient stimulus for improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness.

Affective responses of the parents after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in children

BACKGROUND

These days, diabetes is deemed as one of the most important health and social-economic problems of the world. Since parents play a major role in treatment of diabetes, the most important part of managing diabetes is in the hands of the parents of children affected by diabetes. This special responsibility will increase the stress and family challenges and impacts parents' emotional responses. The affective reactions or responses of the parents can also be conveyed to the child himself and reduce self-care, increase glucose levels, increase the possibility of complications and reduce the quality of life. Thus, it is highly important to recognize the affective reactions of parents during various stages of the disease for the purpose of intervention.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

All parents of children diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes who referred to Sedigheh-ye-Tahereh Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center, Isfahan, Iran, were selected and the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) was filled in five stages (immediately, one month, three months, six months and twelve months after diagnosis). Convenient sampling was used to select 45 consecutive subjects out of whom 10 dropped out during the study.

FINDINGS

The major problems of the study subjects at the beginning of diagnosis were depression, anxiety and physical problems, respectively. Three, six and twelve months later, they were depression, obsession and physical problems. Over time, the mean score of parents' affective reactions declined which indicated the acceptance of the disease by parents over time.

CONCLUSIONS

In view of the fact that both mother and father of children with diabetes suffer from affective problems and since fathers refer to diabetes centers less than mothers, some decisions should be made to mentally support both fathers and mothers.
