Investigation of thermoelectric properties of cadmium selenide CdnSen (n= 7, 11, 13) molecular junctions: a DFT study

CONTEXT

The thermoelectric properties of cadmium selenide (CdnSen) molecular junctions (n = 7, 11, 13) were investigated before and after adding hydrogen atoms. The effects of hydrogen passivation on the transmission and thermopower curves were analyzed. CdSe-diamantane (Cd7Se7) and CdSe-tetramantane (Cd11Se11) junctions exhibited the best thermoelectric performance due to their low surface reconstruction energy, which is attributed to the number of dangling and unsaturated bonds. This study guides the design of new molecular junctions with desired thermoelectric properties.

METHOD

The electrical and thermal properties of cadmium selenide (CdnSen) molecular junctions (n = 7, 11, 13) were investigated using a ballistic quantum transport method based on the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) approach. Thermoelectric properties were calculated for the molecular junctions with different structures before and after hydrogen passivation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed at the B3LYP level with the 3-21G basis set for the Cd atoms and the 6-31G** basis set for the Se atoms. The SIESTA and GOLLUM codes were used to study the effect of changing the shape and size of each structure on its electrical and thermal characteristics.

Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots for Solar Cell Applications: A Review

Quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) are significant energy-producing devices due to their remarkable capability to growing sunshine and produce many electrons/holes pairs, easy manufacturing, and low cost. However, their power conversion efficiency (4%) is usually worse than that of dye-sensitized solar cells (≤12%); this is mainly due to their narrow absorption areas and the charge recombination happening at the quantum dot/electrolyte and Ti O 2 /electrolyte interfaces. Thus, to raise the power conversion efficiency of QDSSC, new counter electrodes, working electrodes, sensitizers, and electrolytes are required. CdSe thin films have shown great potential for use in photodetectors, solar cells, biosensors, light-emitting diodes, and biomedical imaging systems. This article reviews the CdSe nanomaterials that have been recently used in QDSSCs as sensitizers. Their size, design, morphology, and density all noticeably influence the electron injection efficiency and light-harvesting capacity of these devices. A detailed overview of the development of QDSSCs is presented, including their basic principles, the synthesis methods for their CdSe quantum dots, and the device fabrication processes. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of realizing high-performance CdSe QDSSCs are discussed and some future directions are suggested.

Cadmium Selenide Formation Influences the Production and Characteristics of Extracellular Polymeric Substances of Anaerobic Granular Sludge

Feeding cadmium (II) and selenium (IV) simultaneously to anaerobic granular sludge with the aim of synthesizing cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanoparticles induces compositional changes in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) matrix of this sludge. A methanogenic anaerobic granular sludge was repeatedly exposed to Cd(II) (10-50 mg L^-1) and selenite (79 mg L^-1) for 300 days at pH 7.3 and 30 °C in a fed-batch feeding regime for enrichment of Se-reducing bacteria and synthesis of CdSe nanoparticles. EPS fingerprints of the granular sludge, obtained by size exclusion chromatography coupled to a fluorescence detector, showed a significant increase in the intensity of protein-like substances with > 100 kDa apparent molecular weight (aMW) upon repeated exposure to Cd(II) and Se(VI). This was accompanied by a prominent decrease in protein-like substances of aMW < 10 kDa. The fingerprint of the humic-like substances showed emergence of a new peak with aMW of 13 to 300 kDa in the EPS extracted from the Cd/Se fed granular sludge. Experiments on metal(loid)-EPS interactions showed that the CdSe nanoparticles interact mainly with loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS). This study showed that the formation of Se(0) and CdSe nanoparticles occurs in the LB-EPS fraction of the granular sludge and repeated exposure to Cd and Se induces compositional changes in the EPS matrix.

An Evaluation Research About Effects of Characterized Cadmium Selenide (CdSe) and Lead Selenide (PbSe) Quantum Dots on Brine Shrimp (Artemia salina)

Quantum dots (QDs), such as cadmium selenide (CdSe) and lead selenide (PbSe) exhibit excellent optical, magnetic and chemical properties due to their extremely size (ca. 1-10 nm) and are attractive semiconductor nanomaterials for optical studies and energy storage. In this study, aqueous synthesis of CdSe and PbSe QDs in a size range of 2-10 nm was described. Synthesized QDs were characterized using SEM and TEM, DLS, zeta potential, FTIR, EDX and XRD. Highest accumulation (72.5 ± 5.8 mg L^-1) of PbSe QDs occurred at 10 ppm suspensions. In general accumulation increased up to 48 h exposure then fluctuate tended to decline. For CdSe QDs, accumulation tended to decrease for 72 h exposure except that for 5 ppm groups. For the elimination period, in general, the elimination levels of PbSe and CdSe QDs from exposed individuals decreased (p < 0.05) even it has some fluctuate.

The interaction of mercury and methylmercury with chalcogenide nanoparticles

Mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (CH₃Hg) bind strongly to micro and nano (NP) particles and this partitioning impacts their fate and bioaccumulation into food webs, and, as a result, potential human exposure. This partitioning has been shown to influence the bioavailability of inorganic Hg to methylating bacteria, with NP-bound Hg being more bioavailable than particulate HgS, or organic particulate-bound Hg. In this study we set out to investigate whether the potential interactions between dissolved ionic Hg (Hg^II) and CH₃Hg and NPs was due to incorporation of Hg into the core of the cadmium selenide and sulfide (CdSe; CdS) nanoparticles (metal exchange or surface precipitation), or due purely to surface interactions. The interaction was assessed based on the quenching of the fluorescence intensity and lifetime observed during Hg^II or CH₃Hg titration experiments of these NP solutions. Additional analysis using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry of CdSe NPs and the separated solution, obtained after Hg^II additions, showed that there was no metal exchange, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed this and further indicated that the Hg was bound to cysteine, the NP capping agent. Our study suggests that Hg and CH₃Hg adsorbed to the surfaces of NPs would have different bioavailability for release into water or to (de)methylating organisms or for bioaccumulation, and provides insights into the behavior of Hg in the environment in the presence of natural or manufactured NPs.

Strain Effect on the Electronic and Optical Properties of CdSe Nanowires

First-principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations were carried out to study the strain dependence on the electronic and optical properties of cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanowires (NWs). The band structures, effective masses of electron and holes, dielectric properties, and other optical properties (such as extinction coefficient, optical reflectivity, and absorption coefficient) were calculated under both compressive and tensile uniaxial strains. Size-dependence was also discussed by comparing results among CdSe wires with various diameters. Simulation results show that an interesting band-switch behavior occurs at the valence bands regardless of size. The cause and the consequences of such band-switch behavior were also studied. Further strain dependence on corresponding electronic and optical properties were examined as well. Our results provide insights to possible mechanical tuning via strain on the electronic and optical properties of CdSe NWs.

Sonocatalytic degradation of methylene blue by a novel graphene quantum dots anchored CdSe nanocatalyst

Cadmium selenide/graphene quantum dots (CdSe/GQDs) nanocatalyst with small band gap energy and a large specific surface area was produced via a facile three-step sonochemical-hydrothermal process. The features of the as-prepared CdSe, GQDs and CdSe/GQDs samples were characterized by photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR), diffuse-reflectance spectrophotometer (DRS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The sonocatalytic activity of the synthesized CdSe/GQDs was effectively accelerated compared with that of pure CdSe nanoparticles in degradation of methylene blue (MB). The influence of the CdSe/GQDs dosage (0.25-1.25g/L), initial MB concentration (20-30mg/L), initial solution pH (3-12), and ultrasonic output power (200-600W/L) were examined on the sonocatalytic treatment of MB aqueous solutions. The degradation efficiency (DE%) of 99% attained at 1g/L of CdSe/GQDs, 20mg/L of MB, pH of 9, and an output power of 200W/L at 90min of ultrasonic irradiation. Furthermore, DE% increased with addition of K₂S₂O₈ and H₂O₂ as the enhancers via producing more free radicals. However, addition of sulfate, carbonate, and chloride as radical sweeper decreased DE%. Furthermore, well-reusability of the CdSe/GQDs sonocatalyst was demonstrated for 5 successive runs and some of the sonocatalytic generated intermediates were indicated by GC-MS analysis.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium selenide (CdSe) leaching behavior and surface chemistry in response to pH and O2

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium selenide (CdSe) are increasingly being applied in photovoltaic solar cells and electronic components. A major concern is the public health and ecological risks associated with the potential release of toxic cadmium, tellurium, and/or selenium species. In this study, different tests were applied to investigate the leaching behavior of CdTe and CdSe in solutions simulating landfill leachate. CdTe showed a comparatively high leaching potential. In the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and Waste Extraction Test (WET), the concentrations of cadmium released from CdTe were about 1500 and 260 times higher than the regulatory limit (1 mg/L). In contrast, CdSe was relatively stable and dissolved selenium in both leaching tests was below the regulatory limit (1 mg/L). Nonetheless, the regulatory limit for cadmium was exceeded by 5- to 6- fold in both tests. Experiments performed under different pH and redox conditions confirmed a marked enhancement in CdTe and CdSe dissolution both at acidic pH and under aerobic conditions. These findings are in agreement with thermodynamic predictions. Taken as a whole, the results indicate that recycling of decommissioned CdTe-containing devices is desirable to prevent the potential environmental release of toxic cadmium and tellurium in municipal landfills.

Selective recognition of dysprosium(III) ions by enhanced chemiluminescence CdSe quantum dots

The intensity of emitted light from CdSe quantum dots (QDs)-H2O2 is described as a novel chemiluminescence (CL) reaction for determination of dysprosium. This reaction is based on the catalytic effect of Dy(3+) ions, causing a significant increase in the light emission, as a result of the reaction of quantum dots (QDs) with hydrogen peroxide. In the optimum conditions, this method was satisfactorily described by linear calibration curve in the range of 8.3×10(-7)-5.0×10(-6)M, the detection limit of 6.0×10(-8)M, and the relative standard deviation for five determinations of 2.5×10(-6)M Dy(3+) 3.2%. The main experimental advantage of the proposed method is its selective to Dy(3+) ions compared with common coexisting cations, therefore, it was successfully applied for the determination of dysprosium ions in water samples.

28-Day Oral Toxicity of Cadmium Selenide in Sprague-Dawley Rats

This study was performed to evaluate the toxicity of cadmium selenide for a period of 28 days in Sprague-Dawley rats. Each of 10 healthy male and females rats per group received daily oral administration for 28-day period at dosage levels 30, 300 and 1,000 mg/kg of body weight. Mortality and clinical signs were checked, and body weight, water intake and food consumption were also recorded weekly. There were no dose-related changes in food consumption or urine volume. All animals survived to the end of study with no clinical signs or differences in body weight gain observed when compared with the control group. At the end of study, all animals including control group, were subjected to necropsy. Blood samples were collected for hematology tests including coagulation time and biochemistry analysis. Blood coagulation time and relative organ weight were unaffected by all received doses. White Blood Cell (WBC) counts significantly increased in the 300 mg/ kg administered male animal group when compared to the control. Monocyte (MO) value were also increased significantly in both 300 and 1,000 mg/kg male animal group. However, Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) were significantly decreased compared with the control in the 1,000 mg/kg dose groups for male and female animals. Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) decreased significantly for female in the 300 and 1,000 mg/kg group compared to the control. Blood biochemical values of Inorganic phosphorus (IP) were significantly increased in both the 300 and 1,000 mg/kg dose groups in male animals when compared to the control. Creatinine (CRE) levels indicated significant increase in kidney function for the female, 30 mg/kg dose group when compared with control. There was a significant decrease in thymus absolute organ weight in the female, 1,000 mg/kg dose group when compared with control. Histopathological findings revealed no evidence of injury related to cadmium selenide except for one case of focal hepatic inflammation in the high dose (1,000 mg/kg) group. One case of lung inflammation was also seen in the control group. Basis on these result, the No Observable Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) of cadmium selenide was determined to be more than 1,000 mg/kg/day for male and female rats under conditions in this study.
