Hydrochemical characteristics and the impact of human activities on groundwater in a semi-arid plain: a case study of western Jilin Province, Northeast China

Groundwater is important for human survival and development, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. This study aimed to analyze the hydrochemical characteristics, influencing factors, and the impact of human activities on groundwater in the semi-arid plains of western Jilin Province, northwest China. The study collected 88 and 151 phreatic and confined water samples, respectively, which were analyzed for 13 water quality indicators using statistical and graphical methods. In order to investigate the impact of anthropogenic activities on water quality and health risks, the improved combined weighted water quality index (ICWQI) based on the entropy weight, criteria importance though inter-criteria correlation (CRITIC), the coefficient of difference method, subjective weight based on quality grading criteria, and the water quality index (WQI) were proposed to evaluate the water quality of the study area. Meanwhile, the human health risk assessment (HHRA) model was used to assess the risks of nitrate to the health of humans in different ages and sex categories. The results indicated that the groundwater in the study area was weakly alkaline and the main hydrochemical types in the phreatic and confined water were HCO3-·Ca-Mg and HCO3--Na. Rock weathering was the dominant process responsible for the generation of groundwater ions, the ions in groundwater primarily originate from the dissolution of halite, gypsum, and feldspar, while dolomitization promotes an increase in Mg2+. Human activities lead to an increase in NO3- in groundwater and have an impact on water quality and human health risks. The ICWQI method was found to yield more precise and rational assessments of water quality. Groundwater quality is primarily affected by nitrate ions. The areas in which groundwater nitrate posed a higher risk to human health were found to be mainly in the saline-alkali lands of Qian'an, Tongyu, and Zhenlai. Fertilizers, pesticides, and livestock farming activities contribute to the pollution of surface water. This surface contamination then infiltrates abandoned confined wells, leading to contamination of the confined aquifers. This study can improve the understanding of groundwater hydrochemical characteristics and the impact of human activities on groundwater in the study area. This study can also contribute to the study of groundwater in semi-arid regions.

Optimization of water quality index models using machine learning approaches

To optimize the water quality index (WQI) assessment model, this study upgraded the parameter weight values and aggregation functions. We determined the combined weights based on machine learning and game theory to improve the accuracy of the models, and proposed new aggregation functions to reduce the uncertainty of the model. A new water quality assessment system was established, and took the Chaobai River Basin as a case study. To optimize the weight, two combined weights were established based on game theory. The weight CWAE was combined by the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Entropy Weight Method (EWM). The weight CWAL was combined by AHP and machine learning (LightGBM). CWAL was judged to be an optimal composite weight by comparing the coefficient of variation (CV) values and the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) extracted values. To reduce the uncertainty of the model, we proposed two aggregation functions, the Sinusoidal Weighted Mean (SWM) and the Log-weighted Quadratic Mean (LQM). The three water quality assessment models (WQIS, WQIL and WQIW) were established based on the optimal weights besides. All three models had good reliability. Both WQIS and WQIW models had low eclipsing problems (25.49% and 18.63%). The accuracy of the models was ranked as WQIS > WQIW > WQIL. The uncertainty of WQIs (0.000) in assessing poor water quality was low, and so was WQIW (0.259) in assessing good water quality. Overall, the WQIS model was recommended for assessing poor water quality and the WQIW model was recommended for assessing good water quality. The assessment results of WQIS showed that the Chaobai River Basin was "slightly polluted", and the water quality upstream was better than that downstream. TN was the main pollutant in the basin, and there was slight pollution with CODMn, CODCr, BOD5, etc. There was little metal contamination, only a few months exceeded Class I. The model established in this study can provide a reference for the same type work of water quality assessment. The assessment results can provide a scientific basis for the protection of the regional water environment.

Evaluation of the symbiosis level of the water-energy-food complex system based on the improved cloud model: a case study in Heilongjiang Province

As the conflict between the supply and demand of resources intensifies, it is critical to deeply study the important relationships and symbiotic evolution mechanisms among water resource development and utilization, energy production, agriculture, and the socioeconomic system to promote multiresource synergy management. This study introduced symbiosis theory to build a regional water-energy-food complex system in which the water-energy-food nexus was the main body and the social-economic-natural system was the external environment. Then, a symbiosis evaluation index system was established from three dimensions, including the symbiotic unit, symbiotic relationship, and symbiotic environment. Using the improved cloud model, we judged the symbiosis level of the water-energy-food complex system in Heilongjiang Province from 2010 to 2019. The results indicated that (1) the symbiosis level of the provincial water-energy-food complex system, symbiotic unit, and symbiotic environment was on the rise from level II in 2010 to level IV in 2019, and the symbiosis level of the symbiotic unit fluctuated between level III and level IV. The system exhibited an overall strong symbiosis state. (2) The weights of the three criteria were ranked as symbiotic environment > symbiotic unit > symbiotic relationship. The state of the social-economic-natural system could be considered a "monitor" of the symbiosis level, the symbiotic unit was an important basis for the evolution of the complex system, and the symbiotic relationship was the shortcoming of the system symbiosis enhancement. (3) The trade-offs between food production and water savings constrained socioeconomic development in the province. The resource demands of the economic and social systems and the emissions to the natural system that occurred during the resource exploitation and utilization processes were important factors affecting the coordinated development of the studied system. Overall, the experimental results were consistent with the research subjects' actual situations, and the government should promote the regional three-way flow of social, natural, and economic resources to allow the targeted management of multiresource security.

Water quality characteristics and assessment of Yongding New River by improved comprehensive water quality identification index based on game theory

The Yongding New River is essential for the water supplies of Tianjin. To date, there is no comprehensive report that assesses the year-round water quality of the Yongding New River Main stream. Moreover, little attention has been given to determining a combined weight for improving the traditional comprehensive water quality identification index (ICWQII) by the game theory. Seven water quality parameters were investigated monthly along the main stream of the Yongding New River from May 2018 to April 2019. Organic contaminants and nitrogen pollution were mainly caused by point sources pollution, and the total phosphorus mainly by non-point source pollution. Dramatic spatio-temporal variations of water quality parameters were jointly caused by different pollutant sources and hydrometeorological factors. In terms of this study, an improved comprehensive water quality identification index (ICWQII) based on entropy weight or variation coefficient and traditional CWQII underestimated the water qualities, and an ICWQII based on the superstandard multiple method overvalued the assessments. By contrast, water qualities assessments done with an ICWQII based on the game theory matched perfectly with the practical situation. The ICWQII based on game theory proposed in this study takes into account not only the degree of disorder and variation of water quality data, but also the influence of standard-exceeded pollution indicators, whose results are relatively reasonable. All findings and the ICWQII based on game theory can provide scientific support for decisions related to the water environment management of the Yongding New River and other waters.
