A comparative study of stereopsis measurements: analyzing natural conditions versus dichoptic presentation using smartphones and ultraviolet printer technology

Background

Accurate differentiation between stereopsis assessments in the natural and dichoptic presentation states has proven challenging with commercial stereopsis measurement tools. This study proposes a novel method to delineate these differences more precisely.

Methods

We instituted two stereopsis test systems predicated on a pair of 4K smartphones and a modified Frisby Near Stereotest (FNS) version. Stereoacuity was evaluated both in the natural environment state (via the modified FNS) and the dichoptic state (via smartphones). Thirty subjects aged 20 to 28 years participated in the study with the best-corrected visual acuity (VA) of each eye no less than 0 logMAR and stereoauity of no worse than 40″. Varying degrees of monocular VA loss were induced using the fogging method, while this study does not explore conditions where the VA of both eyes is worse than 0 logMAR.

Results

When the VA difference between the two eyes did not exceed 0.2 logMAR, the modified FNS produced lower stereoacuity values compared to the 4K smartphones (Wilcoxon signed-rank test: difference = 0 logMAR, Z = -3.879, P < 0.001; difference = 0.1 logMAR, Z = -3.478, P = 0.001; difference = 0.2 logMAR, Z = -3.977, P < 0.001). Conversely, no significant differences were observed when the binocular vision difference exceeded 0.2 logMAR (difference = 0.3 logMAR, Z = -1.880, P = 0.060; difference = 0.4 logMAR, Z = -1.784, P = 0.074; difference = 0.5 logMAR, Z = -1.812, P = 0.070).

Conclusion

The findings suggest that stereoacuity values measurements taken in the natural environment state surpass those derived from the dichoptic presentation. However, the observed difference diminishes as stereopsis decreases, corresponding to an increase in induced anisometropia.

Monocular and binocular mechanisms detect modulations of dot density and dot contrast

Strong reciprocity has been demonstrated between (1) spatial modulations of dot density and modulations of dot luminance, and (2) modulations of dot density and modulations of dot contrast, in textures. The latter are much easier to detect when presented in phase with one another than when presented 180° out of phase, although out-of-phase modulations can also be detected given sufficient amplitude. This result supports the existence of two detection mechanisms: one that is excited by both density modulations and contrast modulations (quiescent when those modulations are presented 180° out of phase) and another that is relatively insensitive to either density modulations or contrast modulations (thus remaining stimulated regardless of phase angle). We investigate whether the mechanism responsible for detecting out-of-phase modulations depends on high-level computations (downstream from the confluence of monocular signals) or whether both mechanisms are situated at the monocular level of visual processing. Specifically, density-modulated and/or contrast-modulated stimuli were presented monocularly (i.e., to the same eye) or dichoptically (i.e., to opposite eyes). Out-of-phase modulations of density were much easier to detect when presented dichoptically. A dichoptic advantage was also found for out-of-phase density and contrast modulations. These dichoptic advantages imply conscious access to a mechanism at the monocular level of processing. When density modulations were presented dichoptically, 180° out of phase, detection thresholds were highest. Consequently, a mechanism with binocular input must also contribute to the detection of these modulations. We describe a minimal, image-based model for these results that contains one monocular computation and one binocular computation.

Neural markers of suppression in impaired binocular vision

Even after conventional patching treatment, individuals with a history of amblyopia typically lack good stereo vision. This is often attributed to atypical suppression between the eyes, yet the specific mechanism is still unclear. Guided by computational models of binocular vision, we tested explicit predictions about how neural responses to contrast might differ in individuals with impaired binocular vision. Participants with a history of amblyopia (N = 25), and control participants with typical visual development (N = 19) took part in the study. Neural responses to different combinations of contrast in the left and right eyes, were measured using both electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Stimuli were sinusoidal gratings with a spatial frequency of 3c/deg, flickering at 4 Hz. In the fMRI experiment, we also ran population receptive field and retinotopic mapping sequences, and a phase-encoded localiser stimulus, to identify voxels in primary visual cortex (V1) sensitive to the main stimulus. Neural responses in both modalities increased monotonically with stimulus contrast. When measured with EEG, responses were attenuated in the weaker eye, consistent with a fixed tonic suppression of that eye. When measured with fMRI, a low contrast stimulus in the weaker eye substantially reduced the response to a high contrast stimulus in the stronger eye. This effect was stronger than when the stimulus-eye pairings were reversed, consistent with unbalanced dynamic suppression between the eyes. Measuring neural responses using different methods leads to different conclusions about visual differences in individuals with impaired binocular vision. Both of the atypical suppression effects may relate to binocular perceptual deficits, e.g. in stereopsis, and we anticipate that these measures could be informative for monitoring the progress of treatments aimed at recovering binocular vision.

Eye movement control during visual pursuit in Parkinson's disease

BACKGROUND

Prior studies of oculomotor function in Parkinson's disease (PD) have either focused on saccades without considering smooth pursuit, or tested smooth pursuit while excluding saccades. The present study investigated the control of saccadic eye movements during pursuit tasksand assessed the quality of binocular coordinationas potential sensitive markers of PD.

METHODS

Observers fixated on a central cross while a target moved toward it. Once the target reached the fixation cross, observers began to pursue the moving target. To further investigate binocular coordination, the moving target was presented on both eyes (binocular condition), or on one eye only (dichoptic condition).

RESULTS

The PD group made more saccades than age-matched normal control adults (NC) both during fixation and pursuit. The difference between left and right gaze positions increased over time during the pursuit period for PD but not for NC. The findings were not related to age, as NC and young-adult control group (YC) performed similarly on most of the eye movement measures, and were not correlated with classical measures of PD severity (e.g., Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) score).

DISCUSSION

Our results suggest that PD may be associated with impairment not only in saccade inhibition, but also in binocular coordination during pursuit, and these aspects of dysfunction may be useful in PD diagnosis or tracking of disease course.

An action video game for the treatment of amblyopia in children: A feasibility study

The gold-standard treatment for childhood amblyopia remains patching or penalizing the fellow eye, resulting in an average of about a one line (0.1 logMAR) improvement in visual acuity following ≈120 h of patching in children 3-8 years old. However, compliance with patching and other treatment options is often poor. In contrast, fast-paced action video games can be highly engaging, and have been shown to yield broad-based improvements in vision and attention in adult amblyopia. Here, we pilot-tested a custom-made action video game to treat children with amblyopia. Twenty-one (n = 21) children (mean age 9.95 ± 3.14 [se]) with unilateral amblyopia (n = 12 anisometropic and n = 9 strabismic) completed 20 h of game play either monocularly, with the fellow eye patched (n = 11), or dichoptically, with reduced contrast to the fellow eye (n = 10). Participants were assessed for visual acuity (VA), stereo acuity and reading speed at baseline, and following 10 and 20 h of play. Additional exploratory analyses examined improvements after 6-10 weeks of completion of training (follow-up). Following 20 h of training, VA improved, on average, by 0.14 logMAR (≈38%) for the dichoptic group and by 0.06 logMAR (≈15%) for the monocular group. Similarly, stereoacuity improved by 0.07 log arcsec (≈17%) following dichoptic training, and by 0.06 log arcsec (≈15%) following monocular training. Across both treatment groups, 7 of the 12 individuals with anisometropic amblyopia showed improvement in stereoacuity, whereas only 1 of the 9 strabismic individuals improved. Most improvements were largely retained at follow-up. Our feasibility study therefore suggests that the action video game approach may be used as an effective adjunct treatment for amblyopia in children, achieving results similar to those of the gold-standard treatment in shorter duration.

Binocular contrast-gain control for natural scenes: Image structure and phase alignment

In the context of natural scenes, we applied the pattern-masking paradigm to investigate how image structure and phase alignment affect contrast-gain control in binocular vision. We measured the discrimination thresholds of bandpass-filtered natural-scene images (targets) under various types of pedestals. Our first experiment had four pedestal types: bandpass-filtered pedestals, unfiltered pedestals, notch-filtered pedestals (which enabled removal of the spatial frequency), and misaligned pedestals (which involved rotation of unfiltered pedestals). Our second experiment featured six types of pedestals: bandpass-filtered, unfiltered, and notch-filtered pedestals, and the corresponding phase-scrambled pedestals. The thresholds were compared for monocular, binocular, and dichoptic viewing configurations. The bandpass-filtered pedestal and unfiltered pedestals showed classic dipper shapes; the dipper shapes of the notch-filtered, misaligned, and phase-scrambled pedestals were weak. We adopted a two-stage binocular contrast-gain control model to describe our results. We deduced that the phase-alignment information influenced the contrast-gain control mechanism before the binocular summation stage and that the phase-alignment information and structural misalignment information caused relatively strong divisive inhibition in the monocular and interocular suppression stages. When the pedestals were phase-scrambled, the elimination of the interocular suppression processing was the most convincing explanation of the results. Thus, our results indicated that both phase-alignment information and similar image structures cause strong interocular suppression.

The dynamics of cross-orientation masking at monocular and interocular sites

We investigated the temporal properties of monocular and dichoptic cross-orientation masking (XOM) mediating suppressive or facilitatory cross-channel interactions between the neural detectors for the test and orthogonal mask stimuli. We measured the evolution of masking as a function of the duration of the test and mask stimuli to determine its time constant, and determined its dependence on stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA), for three contrast combinations: color-only (red-green color test and mask), luminance-only (luminance test and mask) and color-luminance (color test and luminance mask). Results show that the temporal properties of monocular and dichoptic masking differ markedly from each other and across contrast type. For the color-only condition, the dichoptic suppressive interaction is significantly longer than for the monocular one and both are largely independent of SOA. For the luminance-only condition, the suppressive interactions in both presentations are faster than for color, have similar time constants, but have different dependencies on SOA. For the color-luminance condition under the monocular conditions, cross-orientation facilitation (XOF) occurs with the luminance mask speeding up the processing of the color test with greatest XOF when the luminance mask precedes the color test by around 22 ms. No significant effects are observed for the dichoptic condition. Effects are invariant across spatial frequency. These strongly differential dynamic effects suggest that there is separate encoding of color contrast, luminance contrast, and their combination at the relatively early within-eye stage of processing, which is distinct from the dichoptic site.

The separation of monocular and binocular contrast

The contrast asynchrony is a stimulus configuration that illustrates the visual system's separable responses to luminance and luminance contrast information (Shapiro, 2008; Shapiro et al., 2004). When two disks, whose luminances modulate in phase with each other, are each surrounded by a disk, one light and one dark, observers can see both the in-phase brightness signals and the antiphase contrast signals and can separate the two. Here we present the results of experiments in which observers viewed a similar stimulus dichoptically. We report that no asynchrony is perceived when one eye is presented with modulating disks and the other eye is presented with the black and white surround rings, nor is an asynchrony perceived in gradient versions of the contrast asynchrony. We also explore the "window shade illusion" (Shapiro, Charles, & Shear-Heyman, 2005) dichoptically and find that when a modulating disk is presented to one eye and a horizontally split black/white annulus is presented to the other, observers perceive a "shading" motion up and down the disk. This shading can be seen in either direction in the binocular condition, but it is almost always seen as moving towards low contrast in the monocular condition. These findings indicate the presence of separable retinal and cortical networks for contrast processing at different temporal and spatial scales.
