Self-Assembly in water of C60 fullerene into isotropic nanoparticles or nanoplatelets mediated by a cationic amphiphilic polymer

HYPOTHESIS

To disperse high concentration of C₆₀ fullerene in water, we propose to use an emulsification-evaporation process in the presence of an amphiphilic polymer whose chemical structure has been chosen for inducing specific interaction with fullerene The viscosity enhancement provided by self-assembly of the amphiphilic polymers in water should result in high stability of the suspensions. The organic solvent has also to been chosen so as to maximize the initial fullerene concentration.

EXPERIMENTS

The concentrations of polymer and fullerene, the solvent type and the volume fraction of the organic phase have been varied. Their influence on the concentration of the fullerene dispersions and on the size and shape of the resulting nanoparticles have been investigated by UV-Visible spectroscopy, light scattering and cryo-transmission electron microscopy experiments.

FINDINGS

The resulting nanoparticles consist of aggregates of C₆₀ fullerene stabilized by the cationic polymer with morphologies/sizes tunable through fullerene and polymer concentration. At high fullerene concentration, nanoplatelets are obtained that consist in thin 2D nanocrystals. Their suspensions are very stable with time due to the viscosity of the dispersing aqueous medium. The concentration of fullerene nanoparticles dispersed in water is as high as 8 g/L which corresponds to an upper limit that has never been reached so far.

Metal-Organic Framework superstructures with long-ranged orientational order via E-field assisted liquid crystal assembly

Most MOFs are non-cubic, with functionality dependent upon crystallographic direction, and are largely prepared as microcrystalline powders. Therefore, general methods to orient and assemble free-standing MOF crystals are especially important and urgently needed. This is addressed here through the novel strategy of E-field assisted liquid crystal assembly, applied to MIL-53-NH₂(Al), MIL-68(In) and NU-1000 MOF crystals, with aspect ratios ranging from 10 to 1.2, to form highly oriented MOF superstructures which were photopolymerized to fix their long-ranged order. This new strategy for controlling MOF orientation and packing side-steps the traditional requirements of particle monodispersity, shape homogeneity and high aspect ratios (>4.7) typical of colloidal and liquid crystal assembly, and is applicable even to polydispersed MOF crystals, thereby paving the way towards the development of highly oriented MOF composites with improved functionality.

Spontaneous Formation of Ordered Magnetic Domains by Patterning Stress

The formation of ordered magnetic domains in thin films is important for the magnetic microdevices in spin-electronics, magneto-optics, and magnetic microelectromechanical systems. Although inducing anisotropic stress in magnetostrictive materials can achieve the domain assembly, controlling magnetic anisotropy over microscale areas is challenging. In this work, we realized the microscopic patterning of magnetic domains by engineering stress distribution. Deposition of ferromagnetic thin films on nanotrenched polymeric layers induced tensile stress at the interfaces, giving rise to the directional magnetoelastic coupling to form ordered domains spontaneously. By changing the periodicity and shape of nanotrenches, we spatially tuned the geometric configuration of domains by design. Theoretical analysis and micromagnetic characterization confirmed that the local stress distribution by the topographic confinement dominates the forming mechanism of the directed magnetization.

Recent Advances in 3D Printing with Protein-Based Inks

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a transformative manufacturing strategy, allowing rapid prototyping, customization, and flexible manipulation of structure-property relationships. Proteins are particularly appealing to formulate inks for 3D printing as they serve as essential structural components of living systems, provide a support presence in and around cells and for tissue functions, and also provide the basis for many essential ex vivo secreted structures in nature. Protein-based inks are beneficial in vivo due to their mechanics, chemical and physical match to the specific tissue, and full degradability, while also to promoting implant-host integration and serving as an interface between technology and biology. Exploiting the biological, chemical, and physical features of protein-based inks can provide key opportunities to meet the needs of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Despite these benefits, protein-based inks impose nontrivial challenges to 3D printing such as concentration and rheological features and reconstitution of the structural hierarchy observed in nature that is a source of the robust mechanics and functions of these materials. This review introduces photo-crosslinking mechanisms and rheological principles that underpins a variety of 3D printing techniques. The review also highlights recent advances in the design, development, and biomedical utility of monolithic and composite inks from a range of proteins, including collagen, silk, fibrinogen, and others. One particular focus throughout the review is to introduce unique material characteristics of proteins, including amino acid sequences, molecular assembly, and secondary conformations, which are useful for designing printing inks and for controlling the printed structures. Future perspectives of 3D printing with protein-based inks are also provided to support the promising spectrum of biomedical research accessible to these materials.

Protocol for assembling micro- and nanoparticles in a viscous liquid above a vibrating plate

In this protocol, we demonstrate the use of a vibrating plate to drive the assembly of micro- and nanoparticles as an approach to high-throughput, large-scale directed assembly in a viscous liquid. Vibration drives the assembly of glass bead microparticles and iron oxide nanoparticles in contact with water over an area of 6400 mm². We use a scaling analysis to show that there is a competition between acoustic radiation force and vibration-generated fluid flow in a viscous medium, which determines particle transport characteristics. For assembly in a viscous liquid, we find close agreement between the observed experimental results when compared to a numerical solution of the 2D wave equation that describes plate displacement. This model indicates that microparticles migrate along displacement gradients towards displacement anti-nodes where the magnitude of displacement is maximum. We also observe that nanoparticles migrate toward displacement nodes where the magnitude of displacement is zero.

Nonlinear chiro-optical amplification by plasmonic nanolens arrays formed via directed assembly of gold nanoparticles

Metal nanoparticle assemblies are promising materials for nanophotonic applications due to novel linear and nonlinear optical properties arising from their plasmon modes. However, scalable fabrication approaches that provide both precision nano- and macroarchitectures, and performance commensurate with design and model predictions, have been limiting. Herein, we demonstrate controlled and efficient nanofocusing of the fundamental and second harmonic frequencies of incident linearly and circularly polarized light using reduced symmetry gold nanoparticle dimers formed by surface-directed assembly of colloidal nanoparticles. Large ordered arrays (>100) of these C∞v heterodimers (ratio of radii R1/R2 = 150 nm/50 nm = 3; gap distance l = 1 ± 0.5 nm) exhibit second harmonic generation and structure-dependent chiro-optic activity with the circular dichroism ratio of individual heterodimers varying less than 20% across the array, demonstrating precision and uniformity at a large scale. These nonlinear optical properties were mediated by interparticle plasmon coupling. Additionally, the versatility of the fabrication is demonstrated on a variety of substrates including flexible polymers. Numerical simulations guide architecture design as well as validating the experimental results, thus confirming the ability to optimize second harmonic yield and induce chiro-optical responses for compact sensors, optical modulators, and tunable light sources by rational design and fabrication of the nanostructures.

Application of nucleic acid-lipid conjugates for the programmable organisation of liposomal modules

We present a critical review of recent work related to the assembly of multicompartment liposome clusters using nucleic acids as a specific recognition unit to link liposomal modules. The asymmetry in nucleic acid binding to its non-self complementary strand allows the controlled association of different compartmental modules into composite systems. These biomimetic multicompartment architectures could have future applications in chemical process control, drug delivery and synthetic biology. We assess the different methods of anchoring DNA to lipid membrane surfaces and discuss how lipid and DNA properties can be tuned to control the morphology and properties of liposome superstructures. We consider different methods for chemical communication between the contents of liposomal compartments within these clusters and assess the progress towards making this chemical mixing efficient, switchable and chemically specific. Finally, given the current state of the art, we assess the outlook for future developments towards functional modular networks of liposomes.
