Academic performance beyond the metrics: A qualitative content analysis of nursing students' perceptions

AIM

To explore the undergraduate nursing students' perceptions about the factors influencing their academic performance.

BACKGROUND

Academic performance is the measure for the achievement of learning objectives and skills development. Thus, the literature on nursing education has already pointed out the factors associated with this construct. However, it is essential to understand the in-depth influencers of academic performance from the perspective of nursing students. For this, it is essential to analyze not only numerical indicators, but also to understand the perceptions of undergraduate students about the factors that can influence this performance.

DESIGN

Descriptive study with qualitative approach.

METHODS

Twenty-two undergraduate nursing students were recruited from a Brazilian public university. Interviews were collected and submitted to Content Analysis, thematic modality, and discussed according to references of critical and humanist education.

RESULTS

Two thematic categories emerged from the interviews representing the students' perceptions: 1. The student - history and relationships, with the thematic axis quality of previous education, intrafamily processes and roles, family support, socioeconomic aspects, interpersonal relationships, copping with difficulties, mental health, and physical well-being; and 2. Academic experiences and their challenges, with the thematic axis academic adaptation, professor's didactics and preparation, structure and support provided by the University, management of study time, and participation in extracurricular activities. The students saw them as intervening factors in their academic performance, physical and psychological well-being, established interpersonal relationships (including the relation with peers and professors), family structure, socioeconomic aspects, academic conditions, and the transition to higher education.

CONCLUSION

From the perspective of students, socio-historical aspects and constructs established in relationships with colleagues and professors at the university are directly related to their academic performance and directly influence their ability to achieve the proposed learning objectives and acquire essential competencies for their education.

Effects of a Modified Six-Sigma-Methodology-Based Training Program on Core Competencies in Rehabilitation Nurse Specialists

PURPOSE

Nurses play an important role in ensuring patient rehabilitation and are involved in all aspects of multidimensional rehabilitation. Therefore, strengthening rehabilitation nursing education is vital to ascertain high-quality rehabilitation and optimum outcomes. This study examined the effectiveness of a new teaching reform-a modified Six-Sigma-based training program-against a conventional educational program on rehabilitation specialist nurses' core competencies, post-training performance, and satisfaction.

METHODS

A quasi-randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the modified training program. We recruited 56 learners from the 2020 training course at the Hunan Rehabilitation Specialist Nurse Training Base as the control group. Sixty learners from the base's 2021 training course were recruited as the intervention group. Data were collected in a consistent manner from both groups after the training program was implemented.

RESULTS

Those who underwent the modified training program showed better improvement in all core competencies than those who underwent the conventional training program (p < .05); the scores for theoretical knowledge, clinical nursing lectures, reviews, and nursing case management improved significantly following the teaching reform (p < 0.05). Further, overall satisfaction as well as base management and theoretical teaching satisfaction improved significantly (p < .05).

CONCLUSION

The modified training program strengthens rehabilitation nurses' base management abilities; enhances their core competencies; expands their interest in and breadth, depth, and practicability of theoretical courses; and updates the teaching methods.

Academic-practice partnerships in evidence-based nursing education: Protocol of a theory-guided scoping review

AIM

This theory-guided scoping review aims to provide an overview of existing literature about academic-practice partnerships in evidence-based nursing education.

BACKGROUND

Academic-practice partnership is an approach to improve evidence-based nursing education, to promote evidence-based nursing practice which could reduce the nursing care discrepancy, improve the nursing care quality and patient safety, reduce healthcare costs and promote nursing professional development. However, the related research is limited and there is a lack of systematic review of related literature.

DESIGN

A scoping review guided by the theories of the Practice-Academic Partnership Logic Model and the JBI Model of Evidence-Based Healthcare.

METHODS

The researchers will use JBI guidelines for scoping reviews and related theories to guide this theory-guided scoping review. The researchers will systematically search Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, EMBASE, SCOPUS and Educational Resource Information Centre (ERIC) using major search concepts including academic-practice partnership, evidence-based nursing practice and education. Two reviewers will be responsible for independent literature screening and data extraction. Discrepancies would be solved by a third reviewer.

EXPECTED RESULTS

This scoping review will identify related research gaps to provide implications for researchers and identify specific information to provide implications for developing interventions of academic-practice partnerships in evidence-based nursing education.

An international exploration of blended learning use in pre-registration nursing and midwifery education

AIM

To explore international experiences of using blended learning in preparing nursing and midwifery students for initial professional registration to inform future education policy.

BACKGROUND

The global nursing and midwifery skills shortage and need for an expanded nursing workforce that is fit for contemporary care delivery is widely acknowledged. The immense pressure the profession was already under because of austerity, staff shortages and increasingly complex healthcare needs has been worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic. The UK is extending and evaluating the use of blended learning programmes for pre-registration nursing and midwifery students to help address these issues. This study sought to explore relevant nursing and midwifery experiences from outside the UK to help inform future health professional education policy here and elsewhere.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional, sequential, mixed methods study PARTICIPANTS/SETTINGS: Nursing/nurse education leaders from across International Council of Nurses regions METHODS: Exploratory online survey (n = 32) and three follow-up case studies (March-May 2021). Participants' knowledge and experiences of blended learning were examined along with any perceived benefits for workforce development and successful strategies for addressing the challenges blended learning presents in this context. Case studies were developed inductively from survey responses and follow up telephone calls to provide more detailed information about reported successes.

RESULTS

Participants reported flexibility, cost effectiveness, increased student/tutor and student/student communication and interaction as benefits of blended learning. Challenges included the design and use of interactive learning resources, appropriate preparation and support for staff and students, the potential of blended learning to exacerbate otherwise hidden disadvantage and the need for multi-stakeholder cost/benefit evaluation.

CONCLUSIONS

Blended learning is used globally in the pre-registration education of nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals. These results broadly mirror the literature regarding the benefits blended learning offers healthcare students, staff and organisations and the strategies employed to mitigate risk. As the deployment of blended learning nursing and midwifery programmes expands, further work is needed to address gaps in the current evidence base regarding the practice and impact of this approach. These concern adequate preparation and support of students and staff, ensuring access to appropriate equipment and connectivity, exploration of student perceptions that online learning is of lesser value and comprehensive multi-stakeholder, exploratory evaluation to uncover any hidden factors and impact.

TWEETABLE ABSTRACT

Blended learning plays an effective part in the education of pre-registration nursing and midwifery students to help tackle global workforce shortages, but further work is needed to address gaps in the current evidence base regarding the practice and impact of this approach.

Development and Implementation of a Pediatric Telesimulation Intervention for Nurses in Community Emergency Departments

The need for virtual education for nursing staff has dramatically increased because of social distancing measures after the coronavirus disease pandemic. Emergency departments in particular need to educate staff on caring for patients with coronavirus disease while concurrently continuing to ensure education related to core topic areas such as pediatric assessment and stabilization. Unfortunately, many nurse educators are currently unable to provide traditional in-person education and training to their nursing staff. Our inter-professional team aimed to address this through the rapid development and implementation of an emergency nursing telesimulation curriculum. This curriculum focused on the nursing assessment and initial stabilization of a child presenting to the emergency department in status epilepticus. This article describes the rapid development and implementation of a pediatric emergency nursing telesimulation. Our objectives in this article are (1) to describe the rapid creation of this curriculum using Kern’s framework, (2) to describe the implementation of a fully online simulation-based pediatric emergency training intervention for nurse learners, and (3) to report learners’ satisfaction with and feedback on this intervention.

Impact of motivational interviewing training on emergency department nurses' skills: A one-group pretest-posttest pilot study

BACKGROUND

Overdose from opioid abuse is an increasing cause of mortality worldwide. Emergency department nurses experience barriers when caring for patients with illicit opioid use. Motivational interviewing (MI) may help address these barriers.

METHODS

A one-group pretest-posttest design was used to investigate the impact of an eight-hour MI training workshop for 39 emergency department nurses at a community hospital. Audio-recorded interviews of nurses with standardized patients were assessed before, immediately after, and three to five months after training. Proficiency was assessed using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity 4.2.1.

RESULTS

Paired t-test analysis found statistically significant technical score increases from 2.20 (SD = 0.64) to 2.51 (SD = 0.52, p = 0.02) but not in relational scores, 2.04 (SD = 0.59) to 2.46 (SD = 0.53, p = 0.06), during the immediate pretest-posttest period. At follow-up, proficiency in MI was unattained and both technical (2.35, SD = 0.61, p = 0.49) and relational scores regressed (2.08, SD 0.74, p = 0.19).

CONCLUSIONS

Although short-term improvements in technical scores were observed, proficiency in MI was not attained and skills regressed over time. This suggests that a one-day training session may be inadequate. On-going coaching and supervision may be beneficial to maintain MI skills.

The role of manikins in nursing students' learning: A systematic review and thematic metasynthesis

OBJECTIVES

To summarise and synthesise findings from qualitative primary research studies of nursing students' experiences from educational activities using manikins to gain a deeper understanding of the role these manikins play in the students' learning.

DESIGN AND DATA SOURCES

A systematic review and thematic metasynthesis were conducted. Cinahl+, Ovid Medline, ERIC and Embase were searched systematically.

REVIEW METHODS

Sandelowski and Barroso's framework guided the review process. A comprehensive search to identify qualitative studies of nursing students' experiences from learning with manikins was performed in January 2019 and updated in April 2020. Study selection was guided by six screening questions derived from these inclusion criteria: qualitative primary studies, published from 2008, in English or Scandinavian, presenting findings of undergraduate nursing students' experiences with manikins at all fidelity levels. Thomas and Harden's method for thematic synthesis was followed.

RESULTS

Twenty-eight articles of twenty-seven studies were included. We identified three synthesised analytic themes: Seeing the manikin as a doll or a patient, Experiencing yourself as a nurse caring for a patient, and Being a team member.

CONCLUSIONS

When it is perceived as a patient, a manikin can give students a realistic experience of what it means to behave like nurses. Consequently, this realism lets students practice and acquire relational, communicative, and collaborative nursing skills. Using a manikin can facilitate the development of students' professional identity.

Rejecting the myth of equal opportunity: an agenda to eliminate racism in nursing education in the United States

BACKGROUND

Unfortunately, racism and discrimination against Ethnic minority (EM) has been globalized, universally infecting industries worldwide, and the field of nursing has not been spared. In the United States (US), overt and institutionalized racism (IR) still permeates the fields of nursing, nursing leadership, and nursing education. Programs to address these disparities, and efforts by nursing professional societies and nursing education policymaking bodies to address racism in the nursing field, specifically with nursing leadership and education, have met with little success.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the existence and magnitude of racism and its impact on the fields of nursing, nursing leadership, and nursing education, and to make evidence-based recommendations for an agenda for reforming nursing education in the US.

METHODS

A narrative literature review was conducted with a focus on pulling together the strongest evidence on which to base policy recommendations.

RESULTS

Based on the available literature, we put forth five recommendations aimed at modifying nursing education in the US as a strategy to counter IR in the US in the nursing field.

CONCLUSIONS

Recommendations to address IR in nursing focus on nursing education, and involve implementing programs to address the lack of opportunity for both EM students and faculty in nursing, developing an anti-discriminatory pedagogy, and incorporating diversity initiatives as key performance indicators (KPIs) in the process of approval and accreditation of nursing programs.

[Evidence-based practice competence in undergraduate Nursing Degree students]

AIM

Evidence-based practice (EBP) learning has become a key issue for nurses. An EPB subject was included in the 4(th) year in the new syllabus of the Nursing Degree at University of Murcia (UM). To know the competence level in EBP of undergraduate nursing students at UM and compare the results between all four years.

METHOD

Observational descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach.

STUDY POPULATION

undergraduate nursing students from all four years at Nursing Degree at the Faculty of Social and Healthcare Science at UM in the year 2013-14. EBP evaluation of competence of the nursing students consisted of attitude, skills and knowledge on EBP. A validated questionnaire, the EBP-COQ, was used. The scale range is 1 point «lowest level» to 5 points «higher level».The SPSS 21.0 program has been used to carry out descriptive and bivariate analyses.

RESULTS

144 students were included, 76.4% was female, and the median age was 23 years, 84.7% attended more than 75% class hours. The mean differences in the questionnaire between first and fourth years were 0.58 points in attitude, 0.60 in skills, 1.6 in knowledge and 0.83 in global competence in EBP. Significant differences in mean scores between the fourth and the remaining years in the global competence in EBP were observed, as well as in the three dimensions (p <0.05).

CONCLUSION

The undergraduate-nursing students studied here have acquired an appropriate competence level in EBP, with a gradual increase by year. The biggest increase was in the fourth year students.

Evaluation of an advance care planning education programme for nursing homes: A Longitudinal study

PURPOSE

To evaluate the success of a programme of Advance Care Planning education for nursing homes by examining the effect on staff knowledge, Advance Care Planning practice within the home and end-of-life hospital admission rates.

METHOD

Three longitudinal questionnaires assessing staff knowledge, Advance Care Planning Practice and hospital deaths completed before and after the initiation of the Advance Care Planning education programme by homes that had completed the training and those yet to undergo the training.

RESULTS

Superior Advance Care Planning knowledge was evident in those staff that had completed the training. There was an increase of 85% in the number of Advance Care Plans completed in the training homes and an overall reduction in hospital deaths of 25% for residents from training homes.

CONCLUSION

A programme of Advance Care Planning education for nursing homes is successful in improving nursing home staff knowledge, increasing Advance Care Planning practice and reducing hospital deaths.

Using the hidden curriculum to teach professionalism in nursing students

Background:

Professionalism in nursing is critical for creating credibility and a positive image.

Objectives:

This study was carried out to explain the use of hidden curriculum in teaching professionalism in nursing students.

Materials and Methods:

This qualitative study was conducted through purposeful sampling strategy by the participation of 32 nursing students. The data were collected by using semi-structured interviews, and this process was continued until achieving data saturation and themes’ emergence. Content analysis method was used for data analysis.

Results:

Data analysis revealed three main themes: Development of understanding the professionalism elements, Variety of influenceability strategies, and Influenceability to various resources. Each theme consisted of some subthemes.

Conclusions:

The nursing students learnt the professionalism elements by different methods from different resources through the hidden curriculum. Therefore, exploration of the currently administered hidden curricula is suggested.
