Oyster-inspired carbon dots-functionalized silica and dialdehyde chitosan to fabricate a soy protein adhesive with high strength, mildew resistance, and long-term water resistance

Developing multifunctional adhesives with exceptional cold-pressing strength, water resistance, toughness, and mildew resistance remains challenging. Herein, inspired by oysters, a multifunctional organic-inorganic hybrid soybean meal (SM)-based adhesive was fabricated by incorporating amino-modified carbon dots functionalized silica nanoparticles (CDs@SiO2) and dialdehyde chitosan (DCS) into SM matrix. DCS effectively enhanced the interface interactions of organic-inorganic phases and the rigid nanofillers CDs@SiO2 uniformly dispersed in the SM matrix, which provided energy dissipation to improve the adhesive's toughness. Owing to the stiff skeleton structure and enhanced crosslinking density, the crosslinker-modified SM (MSM)/DCS/CDs@SiO2-2 wood adhesive exhibited outstanding cold-pressing strength (0.74 MPa), wet shear strength (1.36 MPa), and long-term water resistance (49 d). Additionally, the resultant adhesive showed superior antimildew and antibacterial properties benefiting from the introduction of DCS. Intriguingly, the fluorescent properties endowed by carbon dots further broadened the application of adhesives for realizing security testing. This study opens a new pathway for the synthesis of multifunctional biomass adhesives in industrial and household applications.

Development of a new paper based nano-biosensor using the co-catalytic effect of tyrosinase from banana peel tissue (Musa Cavendish) and functionalized silica nanoparticles for voltammetric determination of l-tyrosine

In this paper, a new and facile method for the electrochemical determination of l-tyrosine was designed. First, 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane-functionalized silica nanoparticles were added to a paper disc. Then, the banana peel tissue and the mediator potassium hexacyanoferrate were dropped onto the paper, respectively. The modified paper disc was placed on the top of the graphite screen printed electrode and electrochemical characterization of this biosensor was studied by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. The effective parameters like pH, banana peel tissue percentage, and the amount of mediator loading were optimized. l-tyrosine measurements were done by differential pulse voltammetry with a little sample (3 μL) for analysis. The biosensor showed a linear response for l-tyrosine in the wide concentration range of 0.05-600 μM and a low detection limit about 0.02 μM because of the co-catalytic effect of enzyme and nanoparticles. The stability of the biosensor and its selectivity were evaluated. This biosensor was applied for the voltammetric determination of l-tyrosine in the blood plasma sample. The results of the practical application study were comparable with the standard method (HPLC). In conclusion, a simple, inexpensive, rapid, sensitive and selective technique was successfully applied to the l-tyrosine analysis of the little samples.

Construction of a highly sensitive signal-on aptasensor based on gold nanoparticles/functionalized silica nanoparticles for selective detection of tryptophan

In this work, a highly sensitive, low-cost, and label-free aptasensor based on signal-on mechanisms of response was developed by immobilizing the aptamer on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)/amine-functionalized silica nanoparticle (FSN)/screen-printed electrode (SPE) surface for highly selective electrochemical detection of tryptophan (Trp). The hemin (Hem), which interacted with the guanine bases of the aptamer, worked as a redox indicator to generate a readable electrochemical signal. The changes in the charge transfer resistance have been monitored using the voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) techniques. The peak current of Hem linearly increased with increasing concentration of Trp, in differential pulse voltammetry, from 0.06 to 250 nM with a detection limit of 0.026 nM. Also, the results obtained from EIS studies showed that the Trp was detected sensitively with the fabricated aptasensor in the range of 0.06-250 nM. The detection limit is 0.01 nM, much lower than that obtained by most of the reported electrochemical methods. The usage of aptamer as a recognition layer led to a sensor with high affinity for Trp, compared with control amino acids of tyrosine, histidine, arginine, lysine, valine, and methionine. The usability of the aptasensor was successfully evaluated by the determination of Trp in a human blood serum sample. Formation of functionalized nanoclusters by solvent evaporation and their effect on the physicochemical properties of dental composite resins

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this work was to study the effect of silica nanoclusters (SiNC), obtained by a solvent evaporation method and functionalized by 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) and MPS+octyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS) (50/50wt/wt), on the rheological, mechanical and sorption properties of urethane dimethylacrylate (UDMA)/triethylenglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) (80/20wt/wt) resins blend.

METHODS

Silica nanoparticles (SiNP) were silanized with MPS or MPS+OTMS (50/50wt/wt) and incorporated in an UDMA-isopropanol mix to produce functionalized silica nanoclusters after evaporating the isopropanol. The effect of functionalized SiNC on resins rheological properties was determined by large and small deformation tests. Mechanical, thermal, sorption and solubility properties were evaluated for composite materials.

RESULTS

The UDMA/TEGDMA (80/20wt/wt) resins blend with added SiNC (ca. 350nm) and functionalized with MPS showed a Newtonian flow behavior associated to their spheroidal shape, whereas the resins blend with nanoclusters silanized with MPS+OTMS (50/50wt/wt) (ca. 400nm) showed a shear-thinning behavior due to nanoclusters irregular shape. Composite materials prepared with bare silica nanoclusters showed lower compressive strength than functionalized silica nanoclusters. MPS functionalized nanoclusters showed better mechanical properties but higher water sorption than functionalized nanoclusters with both silane coupling agents, MPS and OTMS.

SIGNIFICANCE

The solvent evaporation method applied to functionalized nanoparticles showed to be an alternative way to the sinterization method for producing nanoclusters, which improved some dental composite mechanical properties and reduced water sorption. The shape of functionalized silica nanoclusters showed to have influence on the rheological properties of SiNC resin suspensions and the mechanical and sorption properties of light cured composites.
