Dual-emission ciprofloxacin-gold nanoclusters enable ratiometric sensing of Cu2+, Al3+, and Hg2

An innovative triple optical sensor is presented that utilizes gold nanoclusters (GNCs) stabilized with ciprofloxacin (CIP) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The sensor is designed to identify three critical metal ions, namely Cu2+, Al3+, and Hg2+. Under 360 nm excitation, the synthesized CIP-BSA-GNCs demonstrate dual fluorescence emission with peaks at 448 nm (blue) and 612 nm (red). The red emission is associated with the interior of the CIP-BSA-GNCs, whereas the blue emission results from the surface-bound CIP molecules. The sensitive and selective fluorescent nanosensor CIP-BSA-GNCs were employed to detect Cu2+, Al3+, and Hg2+ ions. Cu2+ effectively quenched the fluorescence intensity of the CIP-BSA-GNCs at both peaks via the internal charge transfer mechanism (ICT). Cu2+ could be detected within the concentration range 1.13 × 10-3 to 0.05 µM, with a detection limit of 0.34 nM. Al3+ increased the intensity of CIP fluorescence at 448 nm via the chelation-induced fluorescence enhancement mechanism. The fluorescence intensity of the core CIP-BSA-GNCs at 612 nm was utilized as a reference signal. Thus, the ratiometric detection of Al3+ succeeded with a limit of detection of 0.21 nM within the dynamic range 0.69 × 10-3 to 0.07 µM. Hg2+ effectively quenched the fluorescence intensity of the CIP-BSA-GNCs at 612 nm via the metallophilic interaction mechanism. The fluorescence intensity of CIP molecules at 448 nm was utilized as a reference signal. This allowed for the ratiometric detection of Hg2+ with a detection limit of 0.7 nM within the concentration range 2.3 × 10-3 to 0.1 µM.

New fluorescent Schiff base modified nanocellulose-based chemosensors for the selective detection of Fe3+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ in semi-aqueous media and application in seawater sample

Stimulus-responsive fluorescent-modified biopolymers have received significant attention in the field of chemosensors. Herein, four new fluorescent dyes, namely, S1: (PDA-DANC), S2: (SAL-PDA-DANC), S3: (BrSAL-PDA-DANC) and S4: (ClSAL-PDA-DANC) have been successfully synthesized from 2,3-dialdehyde nanocellulose (DANC) for the detection of heavy metals. The microstructural and photophysical properties of nanocellulose (NC), microcrystalline cellulose (DANC) and the synthesized S1 to S4 dyes were investigated by FT-IR, SEM-EDX, XRD, TGA, DLS and photoluminescence. NC, obtained from conversion of MCC, shows an average size of 802.4 nm with 0.141 of polydispersity index (PdI), and a crystalline index (CI) of 82.40 % and crystallite size of 4.68 nm. The synthesized dyes present good fluorescent properties and have been therefore exploited for developing new probes for heavy metal ions detection. Remarkable "turn off" and/or "turn on" behaviors with Fe3+ and Cu2+ and with Zn2+ in DMF/water solution have been demonstrated, allowing the sensitive and selective determination of these heavy metal ions with a low limit of detection (LOD). Finally, the evaluation of the Fe3+ sensing in a real seawater sample was investigated.

Modification of electrodes with polymer nanocomposites: Application to the simultaneous determination of Zn(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) in water samples

Currently, there is a need for fast and sensitive analytical methods for monitoring metals in water due to the progressive increase in the presence of metal ions in the environment. These metals reach the environment mainly from industrial activity and heavy metals are non-biodegradable. The present work evaluates different polymeric nanocomposites to carry out the simultaneous electrochemical determination of Cu, Cd, and Zn in water samples. Screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) were modified with the nanocomposites, which were obtained by a mixture of graphene, graphite oxide, and polymers, such as polyethyleneimide, gelatin, and chitosan. These polymers have amino groups in their matrix, giving the nanocomposite the ability to retain divalent cations. However, the availability of these groups plays a fundamental role in the retention of these metals. The modified SPCEs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The electrode that presented the best performance was selected to determine the concentration of metal ions in water samples by square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry. The obtained detection limits were 0.23 μg L^-1, 0.53 μg L^-1, and 1.52 μg L^-1 for Zn(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II), respectively, with a lineal range of 0.1-50 μg L^-1. The obtained results made it possible to conclude that the method developed using the SPCE modified with the polymeric nanocomposite presented adequate LODs, reasonable sensitivity, selectivity, and reproducibility. Besides, this platform is an excellent tool for developing devices to simultaneously determine heavy metals in environmental samples.
