The ectoparasitoid wasp Heterospilussicanus (Marshall, 1888) (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Doryctinae) as a natural enemy of Gastralluspubens Fairmaire, 1875 (Coleoptera, Ptinidae) in Italy

Heterospilussicanus (Marshall, 1888) is redescribed and illustrated based on the holotype of Dendrosotersicanus Marshall, 1888 and on recently collected material from its type locality (Sicily, Italy). Previous host records for this species are unreliable. Here, the host of H.sicanus, the rare ptinid beetle Gastralluspubens Fairmaire, 1875, is recorded for the first time, having been reared in a historic library in Palermo, Italy. Heterospilussicanus is compared with the similar species Telebolus (= Heterospilus) corsicus Marshall, 1888, which was described in the same monograph from Corsica (France), and it is also redescribed and illustrated. Atoreuteusceballosi Docavo Alberti, 1960, syn. nov. is synonymised under Heterospilussicanus (Marshall, 1888), and Hormiopterus (= Rhaconotus) ollivieri Giraud var. flava Fahringer, 1931, syn. nov. is a junior synonym of Heterospiluscephi Rohwer, 1925. A key for determination of the Western Palaearctic Heterospilus species with a striate vertex is provided and the distributions of H.sicanus and H.corsicus are discussed.

Revisionary notes on the genus Aulacocentrum Brues (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Macrocentrinae) from Vietnam

This paper contains descriptions and illustrations of five new species of the genus Aulacocentrum Brues, 1922, from Vietnam, viz. Aulacocentrumassitum Long & Pham, sp. nov.; A.glabrum Long, sp. nov.; A.imparum Long & van Achterberg, sp. nov.; A.intermedium Long & van Achterberg, sp. nov.; and A.simulatum Long, sp. nov. Additionally, Aulacocentrumseticella van Achterberg & He is newly recorded for Vietnam's braconid fauna. A checklist and a key to the Oriental and East Palaearctic Aulacocentrum species is provided and the in-country distribution of the Vietnamese species is given.

A revised terminology for male genitalia in Hymenoptera (Insecta), with a special emphasis on Ichneumonoidea

Applying consistent terminology for morphological traits across different taxa is a highly pertinent task in the study of morphology and evolution. Different terminologies for the same traits can generate bias in phylogeny and prevent correct homology assessments. This situation is exacerbated in the male genitalia of Hymenoptera, and specifically in Ichneumonoidea, in which the terminology is not standardized and has not been fully aligned with the rest of Hymenoptera. In the current contribution, we review the terms used to describe the skeletal features of the male genitalia in Hymenoptera, and provide a list of authors associated with previously used terminology. We propose a unified terminology for the male genitalia that can be utilized across the order and a list of recommended terms. Further, we review and discuss the genital musculature for the superfamily Ichneumonoidea based on previous literature and novel observations and align the terms used for muscles across the literature.

Peruvian Darwin wasps of the genus Dolichomitus Smith, 1877 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), with a key to Neotropical species

Dolichomitus is a moderately large genus comprising 87 known species, 21 of which occur in the Neotropical region. Here, eight new species from Peru are described and figured: D. chetsorr Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. illa Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. maquinaccasa Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. puka Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. quellue Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. yanasiki Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. urqu Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., and D. willapi Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov.. Dolichomitus annulicornis (Cameron) and D. meii Di Giovanni & Sääksjärvi are recorded from Peru for first time. Furthermore, Umanella tricoloripes Herrera-Florez is transferred to Dolichomitus, and D. pimmi Araujo & Pádua is synonymized with D. tricoloripes (Herrera-Florez, 2018); and a key to Neotropical species is provided.

Ophiclypeus, a new genus of Cardiochilinae Ashmead (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) from the Oriental region with descriptions of three new species

A new genus of the braconid subfamily Cardiochilinae, Ophiclypeusgen. nov., is described and illustrated based on three new species: O.chiangmaiensis Kang, sp. nov. type species (type locality: Chiang Mai, Thailand), O.dvaravati Ghafouri Moghaddam, Quicke & Butcher, sp. nov. (type locality: Saraburi, Thailand), and O.junyani Kang, sp. nov. (type locality: Dalin, Taiwan). We provide morphological diagnostic characters to separate the new genus from other cardiochiline genera. A modified key couplet (couplet 5) and a new key couplet (couplet 16) are provided with detailed images for Dangerfield's key to the world cardiochiline genera to facilitate recognition of Ophiclypeusgen. nov.

Descriptions of Three New Species of the Genus Acerataspis Uchida, 1934 (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Metopiinae), with an Illustrated Identification Key to Extant Species

The Asian genus Acerataspis Uchida, 1934 is reviewed based on both morphology and DNA barcodes. Ten species are recognized in total, of which three species from Yunnan Province of China are described as new: Acerataspis maliae sp. nov., A. seperata sp. nov. and A. similis sp. nov. The male of A. fukienensis Chao, 1957 is described and illustrated for the first time. The genus is recorded from Thailand and Southeast Asia for the first time. An illustrated key to all known extant species is provided. With the supplement of DNA barcodes, a few diagnostic morphological characters are found useful in species identification.

New descriptions and new records of the braconid parasitoids subfamilies Doryctinae and Rhyssalinae (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) in the fauna of South Korea

Five doryctine species, Aivalykuskseniae sp. nov., Dendrosotinusgajwadongus sp. nov., Doryctes (Plyctes) jinjuensissp. nov., Neoheterospilus (Neoheterospilus) geochangussp. nov., and Spathiusfumipennis sp. nov., are described as new for sciences from South Korea. Five doryctine genera, Aivalykus Nixon, Dendrosoter Wesmael, Dendrosotinus Telenga, Guaygata Marsh and Pareucorystes Tobias, and fifteen species are recorded in the fauna of the Korean Peninsula for the first time. Additionally, two genera from the subfamily Rhyssalinae, Proacrisis Tobias and Histeromerus Wesmael, and two species, Proacrisisorientalis Tobias, 1983 and Histeromerusorientalis Chou & Chou, 1991, are recorded in the fauna of Korea for the first time.

More discussion of minimalist species descriptions and clarifying some misconceptions contained in Meier et al. 2021

This is a response to a preprint version of "A re-analysis of the data in Sharkey et al.'s (2021) minimalist revision reveals that BINs do not deserve names, but BOLD Systems needs a stronger commitment to open science", https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.04.28.441626v2. Meier et al. strongly criticized Sharkey et al.'s publication in which 403 new species were deliberately minimally described, based primarily on COI barcode sequence data. Here we respond to these criticisms. The following points are made: 1) Sharkey et al. did not equate BINs with species, as demonstrated in several examples in which multiple species were found to be in single BINs. 2) We reiterate that BINs were used as a preliminary sorting tool, just as preliminary morphological identification commonly sorts specimens based on color and size into unit trays; despite BINs and species concepts matching well over 90% of species, this matching does not equate to equality. 3) Consensus barcodes were used only to provide a diagnosis to conform to the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature just as consensus morphological diagnoses are. The barcode of a holotype is definitive and simply part of its cellular morphology. 4) Minimalist revisions will facilitate and accelerate future taxonomic research, not hinder it. 5) We refute the claim that the BOLD sequences of Plesiocoelusvanachterbergi are pseudogenes and demonstrate that they simply represent a frameshift mutation. 6) We reassert our observation that morphological evidence alone is insufficient to recognize species within species-rich higher taxa and that its usefulness lies in character states that are congruent with molecular data. 7) We show that in the cases in which COI barcodes code for the same amino acids in different putative species, data from morphology, host specificity, and other ecological traits reaffirm their utility as indicators of genetically distinct lineages.

A braconid wasp (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) from the Lower Cretaceous amber of San Just, eastern Iberian Peninsula

Braconid parasitoid wasps are a widely diversified group today, while their fossil record from the Mesozoic is currently poorly known. Here, we describe Utrillabraconelectropteron Álvarez-Parra & Engel, gen. et sp. nov., from the upper Albian (Lower Cretaceous) amber of San Just in the eastern Iberian Peninsula. The holotype specimen is incomplete, although the forewing and hind wing venation are well preserved. The new taxon is assigned to the subfamily †Protorhyssalinae (Braconidae) and, based on characteristics of the wing venation, seems to be closely related to Protorhyssalusgoldmani Basibuyuk & Quicke, 1999 and Diorhyssalusallani (Brues, 1937), both from Upper Cretaceous ambers of North America. We discuss the taxonomy of the Cretaceous braconids, considering †Seneciobraconinae as a valid subfamily. We also comment on possible relationships within †Protorhyssalinae, although a phylogenetic analysis is necessary. Additionally, a checklist is included of braconids known from Cretaceous ambers.

Description of Chilearinus Sharkey gen. nov. and status of Nearctic Earinus Wesmael, 1837 (Braconidae, Agathidinae) with the description of new species

The Neotropical members formerly included in Earinus Wesmael, 1837 are transferred to a new genus, Chilearinus Sharkey gen. nov. Presently three Nearctic species of Earinus are recognized, i.e., Earinuserythropoda Cameron, 1887, Earinuslimitaris Say,1835, and Earinuszeirapherae Walley, 1935, and these are retained in Earinus. Earinuschubuquensis Berta, 2000 and Earinusscitus Enderlein, 1920 are transferred to Chilearinus, i.e., C.chubuquensis, and C.scitus, comb. nov. One other species is transferred to Chilearinus, i.e., Microgasterrubricollis Spinola, 1851, Chilearinusrubricollis, comb. nov. Two other Neotropical species, Earinushubrechtae Braet, 2002 and Earinusbourguignoni Braet, 2002 were described under the genus Earinus but are here transferred to Lytopylus, L.hubrechtae, and L.bourguignoni comb. nov. Two new species of Chilearinus are described, C.covidchronos and C.janbert spp. nov. The status of Agathislaevithorax Spinola,1851, Agathisrubricata Spinola,1851, and Agathisareolata Spinola, 1851 is discussed. A neotype is designated for Earinuslimitaris (Say, 1835) and diagnosed with a COI barcode. Earinusaustinbakeri and Earinuswalleyi spp. nov. are described. The status of both Earinus and Chilearinus in the Americas is discussed. A revised key to the genera of Agathidinae of the Americas is presented.

Review of species of the genus Heterospilus Haliday, 1836 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Doryctinae) from the Korean Peninsula

This article reviews the species of the genus Heterospilus Haliday from South Korea. Nine species, Heterospiluschinjuensissp. nov., H.gajwaensissp. nov., H.heulriensissp. nov., H.hyungkeunleeisp. nov., H.maseongussp. nov., H.suriensissp. nov., H taehoani sp. nov., H.weolchulsanussp. nov., and H.yeogiensissp. nov., are described as new to science. The species Heterospilusfujianensis Tang, Belokobylskij, He & Chen, 2013 is recorded for the fauna of Korea for the first time; H.ater Fischer, 1960 is synonymised under H.austriacus (Szépligeti, 1906). Heterospilusrubicola Fischer, 1960 and H.corsicus (Marshall, 1888) are excluded from the fauna of Korea. A key to all Heterospilus species known from the Korean Peninsula is compiled.

?Addendum to a minimalist revision of Costa Rican Braconidae: 28 new species and 23 host records

Twenty-nine species are treated, most of which have host caterpillar and food plant records, and all but one are new to science. The first host record for the agathidine genus Amputoearinus is given. Gnathopleurajosequesadai Sharkey, sp. nov. is reported as a hyperparasitoid of fly larvae, the first such record for the genus. Minimalist revision and description of 403 new species in 11 subfamilies of Costa Rican braconid parasitoid wasps, including host records for 219 species

Three new genera are described: Michener (Proteropinae), Bioalfa (Rogadinae), and Hermosomastax (Rogadinae). Keys are given for the New World genera of the following braconid subfamilies: Agathidinae, Braconinae, Cheloninae, Homolobinae, Hormiinae, Ichneutinae, Macrocentrinae, Orgilinae, Proteropinae, Rhysipolinae, and Rogadinae. In these subfamilies 416 species are described or redescribed. Most of the species have been reared and all but 13 are new to science. A consensus sequence of the COI barcodes possessed by each species is employed to diagnose the species, and this approach is justified in the introduction. Most descriptions consist of a lateral or dorsal image of the holotype, a diagnostic COI consensus barcode, the Barcode Index Number (BIN) code with a link to the Barcode of Life Database (BOLD), and the holotype specimen information required by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. The Presence of Ancient Core Genes Reveals Endogenization from Diverse Viral Ancestors in Parasitoid Wasps

The Ichneumonoidea (Ichneumonidae and Braconidae) is an incredibly diverse superfamily of parasitoid wasps that includes species that produce virus-like entities in their reproductive tracts to promote successful parasitism of host insects. Research on these entities has traditionally focused upon two viral genera Bracovirus (in Braconidae) and Ichnovirus (in Ichneumonidae). These viruses are produced using genes known collectively as endogenous viral elements (EVEs) that represent historical, now heritable viral integration events in wasp genomes. Here, new genome sequence assemblies for 11 species and 6 publicly available genomes from the Ichneumonoidea were screened with the goal of identifying novel EVEs and characterizing the breadth of species in lineages with known EVEs. Exhaustive similarity searches combined with the identification of ancient core genes revealed sequences from both known and novel EVEs. One species harbored a novel, independently derived EVE related to a divergent large double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) virus that manipulates behavior in other hymenopteran species. Although bracovirus or ichnovirus EVEs were identified as expected in three species, the absence of ichnoviruses in several species suggests that they are independently derived and present in two younger, less widespread lineages than previously thought. Overall, this study presents a novel bioinformatic approach for EVE discovery in genomes and shows that three divergent virus families (nudiviruses, the ancestors of ichnoviruses, and Leptopilina boulardi Filamentous Virus-like viruses) are recurrently acquired as EVEs in parasitoid wasps. Virus acquisition in the parasitoid wasps is a common process that has occurred in many more than two lineages from a diverse range of arthropod-infecting dsDNA viruses.

Checklist of the Ichneumonidae of Germany (Insecta, Hymenoptera)

Background

A revised checklist of the Ichneumonidae of Germany is provided. The list represents an updated version of an earlier checklist published in 2001. The present list includes several records of species that are new for the German fauna and species that were discovered since the last checklist was published. The present checklist was compiled as part of the DNA barcoding projects at the Zoologische Staatssammlung München.

New information

The checklist includes 3,644 species of Ichneumonidae from Germany, with 48 species recorded for the first time. Compared to the checklist published 20 years ago, the number of ichneumonid species recorded from Germany has increased by 312 species.

Evolution of tRNA gene rearrangement in the mitochondrial genome of ichneumonoid wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonoidea)

Gene rearrangements in the mitochondrial genome (mt genome) are common in certain insect groups and can be an informative character for phylogenetic reconstruction. However, knowledge of the mechanism and biases of gene rearrangement in insect mt genomes is still limited. With an accelerated rate of gene rearrangements, Hymenoptera is an important group for mt genome rearrangements diversity and for understanding the gene rearrangement evolution in mt genomes. Here, we sequenced the complete mt genome of Aphidius gifuensis and analyzed the evolution of tRNA gene rearrangements in the mt genomes of ichneumonoid wasps. Two control regions were detected in A. gifuensis and most of the tRNA rearrangement events occurred around these control regions. tRNA gene rearrangements occurred in almost all of the sequenced mt genomes of Ichneumonoidea and the gene block CR-trnI-trnQ-trnM-ND2-trnW-trnC-trnY was the main hot spot of gene rearrangement. Mapped over the backbone phylogeny of Ichneumonoidea, we found that the inversion and translocation of both trnI and trnM is likely a synapomorphic rearrangement in Braconidae. Our study also demonstrated that the gene block CR-trnI-trnQ-trnM-ND2-trnW-trnC-trnY was important for inferring the gene rearrangement dynamics in Ichneumonoidea.

A new lineage of braconid wasps in Burmese Cenomanian amber (Hymenoptera, Braconidae)

A new braconid wasp from the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) amber of the Hukawng Valley in Kachin State, Myanmar is described and figured from a unique female. Seneciobraconnovalatus Engel & Huang, gen. et sp. n., is placed in a distinct subfamily, Seneciobraconinae Engel & Huang, subfam. n., owing to the presence of a unique combination of primitive protorhyssaline-like traits, with an otherwise more derived wing venation. The fossil is discussed in the context of other Cretaceous Braconidae.

A new genus of protorhyssaline wasps in Raritan amber (Hymenoptera, Braconidae)

A second species of protorhyssaline wasps (Braconidae) is described and figured from inclusions in Upper Cretaceous (Turonian) amber of the Raritan Formation in New Jersey, USA. Rhetinorhyssalitesemersoni, gen. n., sp. n., is distinguished from other protorhyssalines, particularly the contemporaneous Protorhyssalusgoldmani.

A literature-based review of HymenopteraParasitica and Chrysidoidea from Reunion Island

A review of the genera and species of Hymenoptera Parasitica and Chrysidoidea reported so far from Reunion Island is provided with host information. Data presented here is based on a review of the existing literature by the authors. This review records a total of 306 species.

Review of Afrotropical Cryptopimpla Taschenberg (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Banchinae), with description of nine new species

The Afrotropical banchine fauna (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) comprises 12 genera. One of these, Cryptopimpla Taschenberg, 1863, is a predominately northern hemisphere genus represented by 47 described species of which only one is known from the Afrotropical region. We describe nine new species of this rare Afrotropical genus: Cryptopimplaelongatussp. n., Cryptopimplafernkloofensissp. n., Cryptopimplagocisp. n., Cryptopimplahantamisp. n., Cryptopimplakogelbergensissp. n., Cryptopimplaneilisp. n., Cryptopimplaonyxisp. n., Cryptopimplaparslactissp. n., and Cryptopimplazwartisp. n. Sergey gen. n., a new doryctine genus from temperate forests of Mexico and Cuba (Hymenoptera, Braconidae)

The new doryctine genus Sergeygen. n. is described with four new species (Sergeycubaensis Zaldívar-Riverón & Martínez, sp. n., Sergeycoahuilensis Zaldívar-Riverón & Martínez, sp. n., Sergeytzeltal Martínez & Zalídivar-Riverón, sp. n., Sergeytzotzil Martínez & Zalídivar-Riverón, sp. n.) from temperate forests of Mexico and Cuba. Similar to many other doryctine taxa, the new genus has a considerably elongated, petiolate basal sternal plate of the first metasomal tergite, although it can be distinguished from these by having the mesoscutum sharply declivous anteriorly with sharp anterolateral edges. The described species have been characterised molecularly based on two mitochondrial (COI, cyt b) and one nuclear (28S) gene markers. Based on the mitochondrial gene genealogies reconstructed, the evidence suggests the existence of incomplete lineage sorting or hybridization in the populations from Chiapas and Oaxaca assigned to Sergeytzeltalsp. n.

NEW INFORMATION

Of the 2,447 species regarded as valid and certainly identified, 214 are here recorded for the first time from the British Isles. Neorhacodinae is considered to be a separate subfamily rather than a synonym of Tersilochinae. Echthrini is treated as a junior synonym of the tribe Cryptini, not Hemigastrini. Echthrus Gravenhorst and Helcostizus Förster are classified in Cryptini rather than, respectively, Hemigastrini and Phygadeuontini.

NEW INFORMATION

Of the 1,338 species regarded as valid, presumed native and certainly identified, 83 are here recorded for the first time from the British Isles. One new synonym is established (Dyscritus suffolciensis Morley, 1933 = Syntretus splendidus (Marshall, 1887) syn. nov.).

DNA Barcoding of the parasitoid wasp subfamily Doryctinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) from Chamela, Mexico

Background and aims. The Doryctinae is a considerably diverse, poorly studied group of parasitoid wasps and one of the most diverse subfamilies within Braconidae. Taxonomic knowledge of this group remains highly incomplete, specially in the tropics. In Mexico, it has been reported as the subfamily with the highest number of recorded genera. A preliminary Barcoding study carried out in the Chamela region, located near the Mexican pacific coast in Jalisco, identified 185 barcoding species of Dorytinae assigned to 19 identified doryctine genera. This work updates the later study, representing a three years effort to assess the species richness of this subfamily for the Chamela region.

Materials and methods. Ten collecting field trips of 5 to 10 days each were carried out from June 2009 to May 2011. A 2% divergence criterion using the BIN system implemented in BOLD was followed in order to establish species boundaries among the specimens that were collected.

Results and conclusions. A total of 961 specimens were collected, from which 883 COI sequences were obtained. The sequences generated corresponded to 289 barcoding species and 30 identified genera. The most speciose genera were Heterospilus Haliday (170 spp.), Ecphylus Förster (19 spp.), Allorhogas Gahan (15 spp.) and Callihormius Ashmead (14 spp.). Addition of previously collected material increased the diversity of the subfamily in the region to 34 genera and 290 species. Paraphyly of Heterospilus with respect to Neoheterospilus and Heterospathius was again recovered. Twenty new species and two new genera (Sabinita Belokobylskij, Zaldívar-Riverón et Martínez, Ficobolus Martínez, Belokobylskij et Zaldívar-Riverón) have been described so far from the material collected in this work.

The genus Spathius Nees (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Doryctinae) in Mexico: occurrence of a highly diverse Old World taxon in the Neotropics

Two new species of the parasitoid wasp genus Spathius Nees (Braconidae: Doryctinae) from Mexico, S. mexicanussp. n. and S. chamelaesp. n., are described and illustrated. These represent the second and third described species of this highly diverse Old World genus in the Neotropics, and the first described species recorded for the Mexican territory.

A new species of Grotea Cresson (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Labeninae) from Colombia

The genus Grotea has 18 described species. A new species, Grotea villosissima sp. n., is described here and its host information included. This is the first record of Grotea for Colombia.

A new species of Apechoneura Kriechbaumer (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Labeninae) from Colombia

A new species of the ichneumonid subfamily Labeninae, Apechoneura seminigrasp. n., is described. Specimens were collected from the Amazon Rainforest of Colombia.

Revision of the new world genus Crassomicrodus Ashmead (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Agathidinae), with an identification key to species

A key to species and descriptions are presented for 14 species of the New World genus Crassomicrodus Ashmead. Seven new species, Crassomicrodus azteca, Crassomicrodus clypealis, Crassomicrodus costaricensis, Crassomicrodus jalisciensis, Crassomicrodus mariae, Crassomicrodus oaxaquensis,and Crassomicrodus olgae are described. Crassomicrodus fenestratus (Viereck) is synonymized with Crassomicrodus nigriceps (Cresson). Crassomicrodus melanopleurus (Ashmead) is recognized as a valid species.
