Molecular mechanism of action of imidazolium carbosilane dendrimers on the outer bacterial membrane - From membrane damage to permeability to antimicrobial endolysin

The outer bacterial membrane of drug-resistant bacteria is a significant barrier to many antimicrobials. Therefore, the development of new antibacterials primarily focuses on damaging the outer bacterial membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Among many membrane-disrupting substances, the most promising are cationic dendritic systems. However, the mode of action may vary among different strains due to variations in the lipid compositions of the membrane. Here, we investigated the interaction of two types of cationic imidazolium carbosilane dendrimers: one with a single cationic group (methyl imidazolium) and the other with the same cationic group but attached to a functional group (a pendant pyridyl moiety), capable of establishing interactions with membranes through H-bonding or ion-dipole electrostatic interactions. We used different models of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria - Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Additionally, we assessed the combined effect of the dendrimers and the antibacterial endolysin on P. aeruginosa. Our results show that the mechanism of action depends on the type of dendrimer and the lipid composition of the membrane. We also demonstrate that the alteration of membrane fluidity and permeability to endolysin by the methyl imidazolium and pyridyl imidazolium dendrimers may play a more significant role in antimicrobial activity compared to membrane damage caused by positively charged dendrimers.

Evaluation of chemical reactivity and polarity of imidazolium-based ionic liquids using quantum chemical calculations

CONTEXT

By using the DFT theory, the orbital energies of twenty-five ionic liquids were estimated. To comprehend their molecular stability and chemical reactivity, the orbital energy values, orbital energy gap (HOMO-LUMO energy gap), chemical hardness (η), chemical softness (S), electronegativity (χ), and electrophilicity index (ω) were computed. The interaction energies between all of the cations and anions under study were then computed and examined. Finally, using quantum chemical calculations, the molecular polarity of all 25 ionic liquids was examined using the sigma profile and sigma potential.

METHODS

Using the lowest orbital energy of the molecules, HF/6-31G* level of theory quantum chemical calculation were carried out using the MOLDEN and GAUSSIAN03 software. The B3LYP DFT approach produced a COSMO file that contained the species optimal SCD.

Nanomagnetic Cyclodextrin decorated with ionic liquid as green and reversible Demulsifier for breaking of crude oil emulsions

Application of the chemical demulsifiers is the best choice for breaking the water in crude oil (W/O) emulsions in the petroleum industry. Here, novel, environmentally friendly, efficient, and easily reusable Fe3O4 nanomagnetic compounds based on imidazolium-decorated cyclodextrin were successfully synthesized and applied to demulsify the water in crude oil (W/O) emulsions. At first, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were decorated with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to prepare Fe3O4@β-CD@IL magnetic nanoparticles. Then, imidazole (Im) was separately reacted with 1-bromohexane and 1-bromodecane to prepare [Im-C6][Br] and [Im-C10][Br] ionic liquids, respectively. The prepared imidazolium-based ionic liquids were reacted with N-propyltriethoxysilane to synthesize [ImSi-C6][Br] and [ImSi-C10][Br]. Finally, [ImSi-Cn][Br] was immobilized on Fe3O4@β-CD to obtain nanomagnetic demulsifiers. Structure of the synthesized compounds was confirmed using different methods such as FT-IR, NMR, and elemental analysis. TGA, VSM, and FESEM methods were used to investigate the thermal stability, magnetic properties, and the morphology, respectively. Fe3O4@βCD and Fe3O4@βCD@[ImSi-C10][Br] nanoparticles respectively showed the particle size in the range of 40-70 nm and 50-80 nm. After grafting the imidazolium-based ionic liquid on the surface of support, the magnetization number reduced from 25.6 emu/g for Fe3O4@β-CD to 24.9 emu/g for Fe3O4@β-CD@[ImSi-C10][Br]. Synthesized material employed to break the (10:90 and 30:70 Vol%) W/O emulsions at the concentration range of 1000-5000 ppm. The maximum demulsification efficiency (DE%) of 92 % was obtained using a Fe3O4@β-CD@[ImSi-C10][Br] at 5000 ppm for (30:70 Vol%) W/O emulsion within 24 h. Interfacial tension (IFT) values decreased with increasing the DE%. The Fe3O4@βCD@[ImSi-C10][Br] demulsifier was reused five times with acceptable yields. The cooperation of imidazolium and β-CD in the green nanomagnetic demulsifiers led to the efficient demulsification of the W/O emulsions. The preparation of different ionic liquids or changing the counter anions are our potential future directions for this research. Demulsification at high demulsifier concentration can be considered a limitation of the nanomagnetic cyclodextrin decorated with ionic liquid. But due to the low amount of ionic liquid immobilized in the synthesized demulsifier, the cost of the final demulsifier is lower that other demulsifiers with full ionic liquid backbones, which increases its potential for industrial applications.

Hydroxyapatite and ionic liquid coupled with hybrid membranes for toxic pollutant removal and remediation

Access to clean water is the mandatory requirement for every living being to sustain life. So, membrane-based integrated approach of adsorption and separation technology has recently been preferred by scientists over other conventional techniques, for wastewater treatment. Current research focused on the synthesis of novel imidazolium (A1) based IL, which was further functionalized with hydroxyapatite (HAp; extracted from Labeo rohita scales), to create possible solutions towards environmental remediation. Cellulose acetate (CA) was used for the fabrication of three different ionic liquid membranes. All the synthesized products were characterized by FTIR, XRD and TGA. Two dyes of different nature, i.e., congo red (anionic) and crystal violet (cationic) were selected because of their highly toxic and carcinogenic effects, for batch adsorption experiments. Antibacterial activity of the synthesized membranes was also evaluated against S. aureus. Results of the study revealed that CA-HA1 1:2 acted as the best adsorbent towards the removal of crystal violet, exhibiting removal efficiency of 98% with the contact time of 24 h while in case of congo red adsorption, CA-HA1 (1:2) proved as prime adsorbent with the removal efficiency of 96% for the same preceding contact time. Considering the antibacterial character of the synthesized membranes, CA-A1 (1:1) emerged as very efficient antibacterial agent with the inhibition zone of 50 mm after 48 h. The overall behavior of monolayer and multilayer adsorption was witnessed for both dyes while kinetic studies favored the pseudo-second order reaction for all adsorbents.

Hexahelicene DNA-binding: Minor groove selectivity, semi-intercalation and chiral recognition

In this contribution, we focused on a fundamental study targeting the interaction of water-soluble [6]helicene derivative 1 (1-butyl-3-(2-methyl[6]helicenyl)-imidazolium bromide) with double-stranded (ds) DNA. A synthetic 30-base pair duplex, plasmid, chromosomal calf thymus and salmon DNA were investigated using electrochemistry, electrophoresis and spectroscopic tools supported by molecular dynamics (MD) and quantum mechanical approaches. Both experimental and theoretical work revealed the minor groove binding of 1 to the dsDNA. Both the positively charged imidazole ring and hydrophobic part of the side chain contributed to the accommodation of 1 into the dsDNA structure. Neither intercalation into the duplex DNA nor the stable binding of 1 to single-stranded DNA were found in topoisomerase relaxation experiments with structural components of 1, i.e. [6]helicene (2) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (3), nor by theoretical calculations. Finally, the binding of optically pure enantiomers (P)-1 and (M)-1 was studied using circular dichroism spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry and UV Resonance Raman (UVRR) methods. Using MD and quantum mechanical methods, minor groove and semi-intercalation were proposed for compound 1 as the predominant binding modes. From the UVRR findings, we also can conclude that 1 tends to preferentially interact with adenine and guanine residues in the structure of dsDNA.

Ratiometric orange fluorescent and colorimetric highly sensitive imidazolium-bearing naphthoquinolinedione-based probes for CN- sensing in aqueous solutions and bio-samples

The widespread use of cyanide (CN^-) in industry results in contamination of various effluents such as drain, lake, and tap water, an imminent danger to the environment and human health. We prepared naphthoquinolinedione (cyclized; 1-5) and anthracenedione (un-cyclized) probes (6-7) for selective detection of CN^-. The addition of CN^- to the probe solutions (1-5) resulted in a color change from pale green to orange under 365 nm illumination. The nucleophilic addition of CN^- to C2 of the imidazolium ring of the probes is responsible for selective CN^- detection. Among all probes, 1 gave the lowest fluorescence-based LOD of 0.13 pM. In contrast, the un-cyclized probes (6 and 7) were substantially inferior to the cyclized counterparts (1 and 2, respectively) for detecting a trace amount of CN^-. The notably low LOD displayed by probe 1 was maintained in the detection of CN^- in real food samples, human fluids, and human brain cells. This is the first report studying imidazolium-bearing naphthoquinolinedione-based probes for CN^- sensing in 100% water.

Synthesis of pyranobenzopyrans from D-glucal using ionic liquids

Imidazolium room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) were used as solvents in the Lewis acid-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions of D-glucal with substituted salicylaldehydes. These reactions selectively led to various, novel, cis-pyrano [4,3-b]benzopyrans in modest yields, different products than those isolated from analogous solution studies. Furan diol was isolated as the major byproduct from all the reactions. The use of RTILs facilitated the use of unprotected sugars in these reactions.

Developing nano-micro size chitosan beads using imidazolium-based ionic liquid: A perspective

The aggressive search for unique materials in recent years has put forward chitosan and modified-chitosan as materials with unique structural and morphological characteristics for various important applications. Just as imidazolium-based ionic liquids are the commonly applied ionic liquids (ILs) type for chitosan modifications for various applications, their further modifications into beads for enhancing their properties is now gaining most attention. However, most of the currently prepared imidazolium ILs modified-chitosan beads are not in nano size due to preparation difficulties. In response to this and referencing the research works in the literature, the possible breakthrough directions including synthesis routes, and physical and mechanical transformation processes are proposed. These procedures are expected to provide certain theoretical and empirical basis, as well as technical guide for developing nano-micro size chitosan beads using imidazolium based ILs.

Long-term stable solid concentrated graphene dispersion assisted by a highly aromatic ionic liquid

HYPOTHESIS

The sonochemical exfoliation of graphite in solution has been demonstrated as a promising and easy technique for producing graphene dispersions. This is usually done in organic solvents and leads to unstable dispersions with very low graphene concentration. Ionic liquids (ILs) represent a versatile and safe alternative to traditional organic solvents. A few recent studies reported the use of commercial ILs with bulky anions, such as bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and aromatic cations, such as imidazolium, which favour the exfoliation of graphite through π-π and cation-π interactions. Although recently investigated, the role of aromatic groups on imidazolium cations is still controversial and systematic studies are still necessary. Besides, these studies were limited to liquid dispersions at room temperature.

EXPERIMENTS

Herein, we prepared four highly aromatic imidazolium-based ILs, including the newly reported 1-(naphthylmethyl)-3-benzylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [(Np)(Bn)im][NTf₂]. These ILs were used for the sonochemical exfoliation of graphite and compared with a commercial benchmark, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [Bmim][NTf₂].

FINDINGS

Interestingly, [(Np)(Bn)im][NTf₂] allowed reaching solid dispersions at room temperature containing thin few layer graphene sheets with long-term stability (up to 2 years) and high concentration (3.6 mg/mL). Such graphene dispersion combines long-term stability in the solid-state and high processability in the liquid state, by a simple heating above 60 °C.

Application of imidazolium based ionic liquids grafted on microcrystalline cellulose as demulsifiers for water in crude oil (W/O) emulsions

Separation of water and oil from water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion before transportation and refining is very important and critical. Ionic liquids (ILs) and their derivatives have recently attracted much attention as efficient chemical agents for breaking emulsions. So, here, a series of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) grafted with imidazolium-based ionic liquids (IM-ILs) were synthesized, named as MCC@IM-ILs, and evaluated as eco-friendly surface-active agents for the separation of water from the crude oil. Structure of the synthesized compounds was confirmed by different characterization techniques. Dehydration efficiency percent (DE%) of the synthesized demulsifiers was measured and compared with each other. Synthesized MCC@IM-ILs showed an acceptable DE% to demulsify three kinds of W/O emulsions with different water content after 5 min. Concentration, alkyl chain length, and counter-anion of the synthesized MCC@IM-ILs play a key role in separating water from crude oil. Demulsifier with C10 alkyl chain length showed better DE% than the corresponding demulsifier with C6 alkyl chain length in the W/O (30:70 v/v) emulsion. Also, demulsifier with Br counter anion showed lower DE% than the corresponding BF₄ ion-exchanged compound with higher hydrophilicity. Synthesized demulsifiers immobilized on ILs have significant advantages compared to unsupported ILs due to the use of green and economical cellulosic substrate.

Boosting Electroreduction of CO2 over Cationic Covalent Organic Frameworks: Hydrogen Bonding Effects of Halogen Ions

We present the first example of charged imidazolium functionalized porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (Co-iBFBim-COF-X) for electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction, where the free anions (e.g., F^- , Cl^- , Br^- , and I^- ) of imidazolium ions nearby the active Co sites can stabilize the key intermediate *COOH and inhibit hydrogen evolution reaction. Thus, Co-iBFBim-COF-X exhibits higher activity than the neutral Co-BFBim-COF, following the trend of F^- <Cl^- <Br^- <I^- . Particularly, the Co-iBFBim-COF-I^- showed nearly 100 % CO₂ selectivity at a low full-cell voltage of 2.3 V, and achieved a high CO₂ partial current density of 52 mA cm^-2 with a turnover frequency of 3018 h^-1 at 2.4 V in the anion membrane electrode assembly, which is 3.57 times larger than that of neutral Co-BFBim-COF. This work provides new insight into the importance of free anions in the stabilization of intermediates and decreasing the local binding energy of H₂ O with active moiety to enhance CO₂ reduction reaction.

Blapsimidazolium A: A new imidazolium carboxylate derivative with anti-inflammatory activity from medicinal insect Blaps rynchopetera

Blaps rynchopetera Fairmaire is a medicinal insect of Yi-nationality medicine used for a long time in Yunnan, China. In the present study, a new blapsimidazolium A (1), together with twelve known N-containing compounds (2-13), were isolated from this insect. The structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses (1D and 2D NMR, HR-MS) and comparisons with the reported literature. Blapsimidazolium A was identified as racemic mixture by optical rotation and chiral analysis. Blapsimidazolium A (1) has a unique architecture containing an imidazolium carboxylate moiety. The results of molecular docking showed that blapsimidazolium A bound well to IL-1β, IL-6 and iNOS. The racemates of (±)-blapsimidazolium A (1) exerted anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-stimulated THP-1 cells by significantly decreasing the production of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6 and iNOS. This is the first report describing the anti-inflammatory activity of this type imidazolium carboxylate derivative.

Isolation, structure elucidation, total synthesis, and biosynthesis of dermazolium A, an antibacterial imidazolium metabolite of a vaginal bacterium Dermabacter vaginalis

Dermabacter vaginalis is a human-derived bacterium isolated from vaginal fluid of a Korean female in 2016. Although several human-related species in Dermabacter genus have been reported there are few studies on their bioactive metabolites. Dermazolium A (1), a rare imidazolium metabolite, was isolated from D. vaginalis along with five known metabolites (2-6) and their chemical structures were determined by NMR, HRMS, and MS/MS data analysis. Feeding experiments using predicted precursors and biomimetic total synthesis of 1 corroborated its structure and led to suggestion of biosynthetic pathway of 1. Antibacterial tests on the isolated compounds showed that 1 is a mild antibacterial agent with MIC values of 41 µg/mL against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) USA300, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei KCTC 3510 and Brevibacterium epidermidis KCTC 3090.

Multifunctional Charge and Hydrogen-Bond Effects of Second-Sphere Imidazolium Pendants Promote Capture and Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 in Water Catalyzed by Iron Porphyrins

Microenvironments tailored by multifunctional secondary coordination sphere groups can enhance catalytic performance at primary metal active sites in natural systems. Here, we capture this biological concept in synthetic systems by developing a family of iron porphyrins decorated with imidazolium (im) pendants for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR), which promotes multiple synergistic effects to enhance CO2 RR and enables the disentangling of second-sphere contributions that stem from each type of interaction. Fe-ortho-im(H), which poises imidazolium units featuring both positive charge and hydrogen-bond capabilities proximal to the active iron center, increases CO2 binding affinity by 25-fold and CO2 RR activity by 2000-fold relative to the parent Fe tetraphenylporphyrin (Fe-TPP). Comparison with monofunctional analogs reveals that through-space charge effects have a greater impact on catalytic CO2 RR performance compared to hydrogen bonding in this context.

Ionic liquids as potentially hazardous pollutants: Evidences of their presence in the environment and recent analytical developments

Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered to be very promising group of chemicals and the number of their potential applications is growing rapidly. However, while these compounds were originally proposed as a green alternative to classical solvents, there are certain doubts as to whether this classification is correct. Although in recent years there have been first reports published proving the presence of some ILs in the environment and even in human blood, at this point the scale of this possible problem is not yet fully understood. However, there is no doubt that as the number of ILs applications increases, analytical capabilities for rapid detection of possible environmental contamination should be also considered. Therefore, in this review paper, recent evidences for the ILs environmental contamination as well as analytical achievements related to the extraction of ILs from various environmental matrices have been summarized and important gaps and future perspectives have been pointed out. Based on the presented data it might be concluded that there is the urgent need for further development towards risk assessment of these potential environmental contaminants.

A comparative evaluation of antibacterial activities of imidazolium-, pyridinium-, and phosphonium-based ionic liquids containing octyl side chains

Antibacterial activity is an essential property of ionic liquids. In this work, a comprehensive study has been performed on the antibacterial activity of ionic liquids to be utilized for further research and applications. Eighteen ionic liquids viz. Octyl Imidazolium, octyl Pyridinium, quaternary phosphonium-based cations containing bromide, sodium methane sulphonates, bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl) imide, dichloroacetate, tetrafluoroborate, hydrogen sulfate were prepared and characterized with the help of different spectroscopic techniques. All these samples of ionic liquids were tested for their antibacterial activity against the most commonly occurring bacteria in the environment, i.e., Enterobacter aerogenes (E. aerogenes), Proteus vulgaris (P. vulgaris), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes). Most of the ionic liquids show good antibacterial properties, and imidazolium-based ionic liquids were even more antibacterial as compared to positive control. It was observed that a unique combination of cation and anion is essential to achieve desired antibacterial properties. The mechanism of antibacterial activity was further investigated using density functional theory calculations. A good correlation was found between experimental and theoretical studies.

Diazapentabenzocorannulenium: A Hydrophilic/Biophilic Cationic Buckybowl

Polycyclic aromatic molecules are promising functional materials for a wide range of applications, especially in organic electronics. However, their largely hydrophobic nature has impeded further applications. As such, imparting high solubility/hydrophilicity to polycyclic aromatic molecules leads to a breakthrough in this research field. Herein, we report the synthesis of diazapentabenzocorannulenium, a cationic nitrogen-embedded buckybowl bearing a central imidazolium core, by a bottom-up strategy from polycyclic aromatic azomethine ylide. X-ray crystallography analyses have revealed a bowl-shaped molecular structure that is capable of forming charge-segregated one-dimensional columns by bowl-in-bowl packing. In addition to its fluorescence capabilities and high dispersibility in water, the molecule was found to selectively localize in the mitochondria of various tumor cells, showing potential as viable mitochondria-selective fluorescent probes.

Unraveling Passivation Mechanism of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids on Inorganic Perovskite to Achieve Near-Record-Efficiency CsPbI2Br Solar Cells

The application of ionic liquids in perovskite has attracted wide-spread attention for its astounding performance improvement of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the detailed mechanisms behind the improvement remain mysterious. Herein, a series of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (IILs) with different cations and anions is systematically investigated to elucidate the passivation mechanism of IILs on inorganic perovskites. It is found that IILs display the following advantages: (1) They form ionic bonds with Cs⁺ and Pb²⁺ cations on the surface and at the grain boundaries of perovskite films, which could effectively heal/reduce the Cs⁺/I^- vacancies and Pb-related defects; (2) They serve as a bridge between the perovskite and the hole-transport-layer for effective charge extraction and transfer; and (3) They increase the hydrophobicity of the perovskite surface to further improve the stability of the CsPbI₂Br PSCs. The combination of the above effects results in suppressed non-radiative recombination loss in CsPbI₂Br PSCs and an impressive power conversion efficiency of 17.02%. Additionally, the CsPbI₂Br PSCs with IILs surface modification exhibited improved ambient and light illumination stability. Our results provide guidance for an in-depth understanding of the passivation mechanism of IILs in inorganic perovskites.

Organometallic dendrimers based on Ruthenium(II) N-heterocyclic carbenes and their implication as delivery systems of anticancer small interfering RNA

With the purpose of obtaining a new dendritic system against cancer, this paper is focused on the synthesis of spherical carbosilane metallodendrimers of different generations holding Ru(II) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) on the periphery from the imidazolium precursors. Both imidazolium salt dendrimers and their metallodendrimers counterparts showed promising anticancer activity, similar to cisplatin, mainly at high generations. In addition, both families of second and third generations were able to form dendriplexes with anticancer small interfering RNA (siRNA), protecting the cargo against RNAse and being able to internalize it in HEPG2 (human liver cancer) tumour cells. The characterization and effectiveness of the dendriplexes were evaluated by various analytical techniques such as zeta potential, electrophoresis and circular dichroism, the stability of the system and the protective nature of the dendrimer estimated using RNAse and the internalization of dendriplexes by confocal microscopy. The major advantage observed with the ruthenium metallodendrimers with respect to the imidazolium salts precursors was in cellular uptake, where the internalization of Mcl-1-FITC siRNA (myeloid cell leukaemia-1 fluorescein labelled siRNA) proceeded more efficiently. Therefore, we propose here that both imidazolium and Ru metallodendrimers are interesting candidates in cancer due to their double action, as anticancer per se and as carrier for anticancer siRNA, providing in this way a combined action.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of naphthoquinone phenacylimidazolium derivatives

In order to expand structural diversity and improve antitumor efficiency, forty new naphthoquinone phenacylimidazolium derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated. Good synthetic yields were obtained under mild conditions using easily available starting materials. Cytotoxicity of these compounds was evaluated in vitro against a panel of human tumor cell lines: human breast carcinoma cell lines (MCF-7), human cervical carcinoma cell lines (HeLa), and human lung carcinoma cell lines (A549). Among them, the optimal compound 7m showed splendid antiproliferative activity with low to 50 nM IC₅₀ values against MCF-7 and excellent selectivity of 256-fold compared with the normal cell lines L929. Compound 7m induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. Further mechanism experiments showed that compound 7m dramatically inhibited the expression of survivin and activated the pro-apoptotic protein caspase-3. Our results indicated that the structural modification on the 1,3-substituents of naphthoquinone imidazoliums without 2-substituent is also promising to obtain new antitumor compounds.

3D Metallo-organic coordination assembly-based anion-enriched supramolecular material for fast and efficient removal of Cr2O72

Chromium(VI), especially dichromate (Cr₂O₇^2-) contamination in wastewater due to rapid industrialization with uncontrolled effluent management is still a serious concern which needs focused attention. Multiprong approaches are practiced such as chemical precipitation, reverse osmosis, ion-exchange, adsorption by granular activated carbon etc. to capture and separate this "Group A" human carcinogenic effluent from water. However, low capture capacity, non-reusability, poor selectivity, pH-limited performance are some major limitations of these techniques. Recently, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), metal organic cages (MOCs), porous organic polymers (POPs) or covalent organic frameworks (COFs), covalent organic networks (CONs) etc. emerged as new-generation materials to overcome such limitations. However, the development is still in initial stage and issues related to structural stability and integrity of many MOFs in water and in wide pH range, as well as reusability need to be addressed. At this juncture, herein we report a novel [Zn(terpyridine)₂]²⁺-templated trisimidazolium-based highly cationic three-dimensional metal-organic coordination assembly (3D MOCA), serving as a new class of efficient, fast, robust and recyclable dichromate-removal material. Not only the highly cationic assembly is enriched with a high density of Br^- anions, but its three-dimensional propagation and flexibility also exposes the exchangeable Br^- ions for facile anion-metathesis with Cr₂O₇^2-. By virtue of the benefits of these attributes, the presented supramolecular material exhibits a high capture capacity (469 mg g^-1), fast exchange kinetics (0.028 g mg^-1 min^-1), wide working pH range (pH 2-12) and reusability up to a minimum of 10 cycles without much loss of efficiency. Key mechanistic examinations highlight the evidences in favor of ion-exchange-based chemistry to be responsible for dichromate removal with the present material.

Efficacy of imidazolium and piperidinium based ionic liquids on inhibiting biofilm formation on titanium and carbon steel surfaces

In the present study, the efficacies of three different cationic and anionic ionic liquids (ILs) on biofilm formation on materials used in cooling water systems were evaluated. Two imidazolium based ILs; 1-Ethyl 3-Methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate - (IL-E) and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride - (IL-I) with anionic fluoride and chloride groups and one piperidinium based IL, N-methyl-N-propylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide - (IL-M) with fluoromethyl group as anion were used. The efficacy of these ILs were evaluated on planktonic and sessile cells of major biofilm formers in cooling water systems using Gram negative bacterium Pseudomonas sp. and Gram positive bacterium Bacillus sp. Further their effect on inhibiting biofilm formation on titanium and carbon steel surfaces were also evaluated. Results showed that planktonic cells of Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus sp. were effectively inhibited by 25 ppm of IL-M and IL-E, respectively. For both bacteria, 50 ppm of IL-I was enough to inhibit and eradicate the sessile cell formation. Among the three ILs, IL-E was the best in inhibiting the adhesion of bacterial cells on Ti and CS surfaces. These results suggest that Imidazolium based ILs are effective in controlling sessile cell formation and eradicating mature biofilm as compared to piperidinium based IL. Further, Imidazolium based IL with fluoride anion (IL-E) was the best in inhibiting adhesion of these bacterial cells and thereby biofilm formation on material surfaces. This study establishes the feasibility of using ILs in cooling water system for bacterial biofilm control along with other conventional biofouling control methods.

Removal of anionic hexavalent chromium and methyl orange pollutants by using imidazolium-based mesoporous poly(ionic liquid)s as efficient adsorbents in column

Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) are attractive for their various applications, but the use of porous PILs have rarely been reported in anionic pollutants removal via ion-exchange by column. Herein, we report a serial of crosslinked imidazolium-based mesoporous PILs with Cl^- and Br^- as anions for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and methyl orange (MO) removal. Among them, PDVIm-Cl-SCD, from the free-radical polymerization of a dicationic monomer (N,N'-methylene-bis(1-(3-vinylimidazolium)) chloride, DVIm-Cl) and further supercritical carbon dioxide drying (SCD), displayed a very high sorption capacity (328.2 mg g^-1 at 25 °C) and excellent utilization of adsorption sites (UOA, 86.2%) towards Cr(VI), and an unprecedentedly high sorption capacity (1615.0 mg g^-1 at 25 °C) with a UOA of 67.4% to MO. Moreover, PDVIm-Cl-SCD also exhibited a broad pH range, excellent regeneration and remarkable reusability. Regarding to Cr(VI) removal, the volume of saturated KCl aqueous used for regenerating the Cr(VI) saturated PDVIm-Cl-SCD column (7.5-9.5 mL) was much less than the volume of treated Cr(VI) solution (160-200 mL). For MO removal, the volume of saturated NaCl solution used for regenerating the MO saturated PDVIm-Cl-SCD column (10.5-13.5 mL) was also much less than the volume of treated MO solution (220-235 mL), implying the great potential of PDVIm-Cl-SCD in sustainable wastewater treatment.

Cation and anion effect on the biodegradability and toxicity of imidazolium- and choline-based ionic liquids

This work studies the effect of the cation and anion on the biodegradability and inhibition of imidazolium- and choline-based ionic liquids (ILs) using activated sludge. Six commercial ILs, formed by combination of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium (Bmim⁺) and N,N,N-trimethylethanolammonium (Choline⁺) cations and chloride (Cl^-), acetate (Ac^-) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NTf₂^-) anions were evaluated, all representative counter-ions with markedly different toxicity and biodegradability. Inherent and fast biodegradability tests were used to evaluate both the microorganism inhibition and the IL biodegradability. In addition, the ecotoxicological response (EC₅₀) of the ILs was studied using activated sludge and Vibrio fischeri (Microtox® test). Bmim⁺ and NTf₂^- can be considered as non-biodegradable, whereas aerobic microorganisms easily degraded Choline⁺ and Ac^-. The biodegradation pattern of each cation/anion is nearly unaffected by counter-ion nature. Moreover, concentrations of CholineNTf₂ higher than 50 mg/L caused a partial inhibition on microbial activity, in good concordance with its low EC₅₀ (54 mg/L) measured by respiration inhibition test, which alerts on the negative environmental impact of NTf₂-containing ILs on the performance of sewage treatment plants.

Ultrasound-induced synthesis of an imidazolium based poly(ionic liquid) in an aqueous media: A structural, thermal and morphological study

Here we describe an efficient and rapid way for the polymerization of the 3-Octyl-1-vinylimidazolium Bromide using ultrasonic irradiation. This way promoted high dispersion polymerization using a water-soluble free radical initiator namely 4,4'-Azobis (4-cyanopentanoic acid) and free of dispersant. The ionic liquid monomer was prepared via quaternization of 1-vinylimidazole with octyl bromide also promoted by ultrasound. The polymerization rates were compared with a conventional heating method and appeared to be higher in the case of the ultrasound method within a short reaction time. The structural/morphological features and thermal properties of the obtained products were determined by different analytical techniques such as (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electronic microscopy (SEM, TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and NMR Spectroscopy (¹H and ¹³C NMR). The morphology and the thermal behavior of the obtained poly(ionic liquid) were investigated and discussed. The results indicated that self-assembled nanospherical particles of 30-80 nm in diameter were obtained through the ultrasound method, while on the other hand; worm-like/cylindrical agglomerated nanoparticles with irregular sizes 50-300 nm in diameter were obtained via the classical heating method.

Uptake, accumulation and metabolization of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide by ryegrass from water: Prospects for phytoremediation

The unique properties of ionic liquids make them attractive for a wide range of industrial applications, which makes it easy to be released into the environment and cause water or soil pollution. Phytoremediation of organic contaminants is a safe and important process for removing persistent pollutants from the environment. However, due to they are very chemically stable and potentially toxic to plants, whether they can be removed, assimilated and metabolized by plants remains unknown during phytoremediation process. In this study, ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., was used for imidazolium ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, [C₄mim]⁺) removal from water. The results show that [C₄mim]⁺ could be taken up, accumulated and metabolized by plants in vivo with a high removal efficiency. Most of the [C₄mim]⁺ was accumulated in the root tissue, with the root concentration fraction factors ranging from 4.9 to 51.5. Two hydroxylated metabolites 1-(4-hydroxybutyl)-3-methylimidazolium, and 1-(n-butyl)-3-(hydroxymethyl)-imidazolium, and two secondary metabolites were detected in the ryegrass after [C₄mim]⁺ uptake. The metabolic mechanism was clarified using density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, [C₄mim]⁺ at a high concentration was found to be high toxic to inhibit the growth of ryegrass markedly. In response, some oxidative stress was observed in the metabolic process, as indicated by increasing of catalase, super dismutase and peroxidase activities. Our results suggested that phytoremediation was an efficient technique for ionic liquids treatment from water.

Removal of imidazolium- and pyridinium-based ionic liquids by Fenton oxidation

The oxidation of imidazolium (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, HmimCl) and pyridinium (1-butyl-4-methylpyridinium chloride, BmpyrCl) ionic liquids (ILs) by Fenton's reagent has been studied. Complete conversion was achieved for both ILs using the stoichiometric H₂O₂ dose at 70 °C, reaching final TOC conversion values around 45 and 55% for HmimCl and BmpyrCl, respectively. The decrease in hydrogen peroxide dose to substoichiometric concentrations (20-80% stoichiometric dose) caused a decrease in TOC conversion and COD removal and the appearance of hydroxylated oxidation by-products. Working at these substoichiometric H₂O₂ doses allowed the depiction of a possible degradation pathway for the oxidation of both imidazolium and pyridinium ILs. The first step of the oxidation process consisted in the hydroxylation of the ionic liquid by the attack of the ·OH radicals, followed by the ring-opening and the formation of short-chain organic acids, which could be partially oxidized up to CO₂ and H₂O. At H₂O₂ doses near stoichiometric values (80%), the resulting effluents showed non-ecotoxic behaviour and more biodegradable character (BOD₅/COD ratio around 0.38 and 0.58 for HmimCl and BmpyrCl, respectively) due to the formation of short-chain organic acids. Assessment the ecotoxicity and inhibition of imidazolium ionic liquids by respiration inhibition assays

The ecotoxicity and inhibition of 12 imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) with alkyl chain from C4 to C10 and chloride (Cl^-), tetrafluoroborate (BF₄^-) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NTf₂^-) anions have been studied by means of respiration inhibition assays using activated sludge collected from a wastewater treatment plant. This test represents an alternative easy, economic and quick way to evaluate the true impact of ILs on activated sludge-based wastewater treatment. For comparison purposes, the EC₅₀ values were also determined by the Microtox test (Vibrio fischeri). It was observed that this widely used microbial test overestimates the effect of the ILs on biological wastewater treatment facilities, especially in the case of ILs with lower ecotoxicity. The results of the biological tests showed that the alkyl chain length plays a crucial role in the ecotoxicity of ILs. A significant increase of the toxicity with the length of the n-alkyl chain was found. Regarding to the impact of the anion, the ecotoxicity measured by respiration inhibition assays follows the order NTf₂^- > Cl^- > BF₄^-, being the anion effect higher as decreasing the length of cation alkyl chain. According to the hazard substances ranking for aquatic organisms (Passino and Smith, 1987), imidazolium ILs with C4 alkyl chain can be classified as "practically harmless" compounds whereas those with alkyl chains C8 or C10 correspond to "highly toxic" species.

Ionic crosslinking of imidazolium functionalized poly(aryl ether ketone) by sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) for anion exchange membranes

Two N3-substituted imidazoles 1,2-dimethylimidazole and 1-butyl-2-methylimidazole were chosen to functionalize poly(aryl ether ketone), respectively. The generated imidazolium cations could electrostatically react with sulfonate ions of the sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) forming the ionic crosslinking structure of the membranes. The changes in crosslinking degree and the alkyl chain-length on N3 site of the imidazoliums could highly affect the properties of the anion exchange membranes (AEMs). The AEMs functionalized by 1-butyl-2-methylimidazole exhibited superior properties compared to those functionalized by 1,2-dimethylimidazole according to the tolerance tests of the AEMs towards hot alkaline solutions. After exposed to 1M KOH at 80°C for 200h, the 1-butyl-2-methylimidazole modified AEMs maintained the ion exchange capacity of above 85%, the conductivity of about 70%, and the tensile stress at break of around 80%, respectively. The hydrophile-lipophile balance of the polymer membranes was calculated and proposed to better understand the correlation between structures and properties of the AEMs. The degradation of the imidazolium functional groups of the AEMs under the attack of hydroxide ions was evidenced by FT-IR analysis.

The Effect of n vs. iso Isomerization on the Thermophysical Properties of Aromatic and Non-aromatic Ionic Liquids

This work explores the n vs. iso isomerization effects on the physicochemical properties of different families of ionic liquids (ILs) with variable aromaticity and ring size. This study comprises the experimental measurements, in a wide temperature range, of the ILs' thermal behavior, heat capacities, densities, refractive indices, surface tensions, and viscosities. The results here reported show that the presence of the iso-alkyl group leads to an increase of the temperature of the glass transition, T_g. The iso-pyrrolidinium (5 atoms ring cation core) and iso-piperidinium (6 atoms ring cation core) ILs present a strong differentiation in the enthalpy and entropy of melting. Non-aromatic ILs have higher molar heat capacities due to the increase of the atomic contribution, whereas it was not found any significant differentiation between the n and iso-alkyl isomers. A small increase of the surface tension was observed for the non-aromatic ILs, which could be related to their higher cohesive energy of the bulk, while the lower surface entropy observed for the iso isomers indicates a structural resemblance between the IL bulk and surface. The significant differentiation between ILs with a 5 and 6 atoms ring cation in the n-alkyl series (where 5 atoms ring cations have higher surface entropy) is an indication of a more efficient arrangement of the non-polar region at the surface in ILs with smaller cation cores. The ILs constituted by non-aromatic piperidinium cation, and iso-alkyl isomers were found to be the most viscous among the studied ILs due to their higher energy barriers for shear stress.

Densities, Viscosities and Derived Thermophysical Properties of Water-Saturated Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids

In order to evaluate the impact of the alkyl side chain length and symmetry of the cation on the thermophysical properties of water-saturated ionic liquids (ILs), densities and viscosities as a function of temperature were measured at atmospheric pressure and in the (298.15 to 363.15) K temperature range, for systems containing two series of bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide-based compounds: the symmetric [C n C n im][NTf2] (with n = 1-8 and 10) and asymmetric [C n C1im][NTf2] (with n = 2-5, 7, 9 and 11) ILs. For water-saturated ILs, the density decreases with the increase of the alkyl side chain length while the viscosity increases with the size of the aliphatic tails. The saturation water solubility in each IL was further estimated with a reasonable agreement based on the densities of water-saturated ILs, further confirming that for the ILs investigated the volumetric mixing properties of ILs and water follow a near ideal behaviour. The water-saturated symmetric ILs generally present lower densities and viscosities than their asymmetric counterparts. From the experimental data, the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient and energy barrier were also estimated. A close correlation between the difference in the energy barrier values between the water-saturated and pure ILs and the water content in each IL was found, supporting that the decrease in the viscosity of ILs in presence of water is directly related with the decrease of the energy barrier.

Characterization of compounds derived from copper-oxamate and imidazolium by X-ray absorption and vibrational spectroscopies

In this work, compounds derived from copper-oxamate anions (ortho, meta, and para)-phenylenebis (oxamate) and imidazolium cations (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) were synthesized. The compounds were characterized by Raman and FTIR spectroscopies and the band assignments were supported by DFT calculations. Strong IR bands from 1610 to 1700cm(-1) dominated the spectra of the complex and can be assigned to νCO vibrations of the [Cu(opba)](2-) anions by the comparison with the DFT data. In opposition to the FTIR spectra, the main vibrational bands in the Raman spectra are observed in the 1350-1600cm(-1) range. All bands in this region are associated to the modified benzene vibrations of the copper-phenylenebis(oxamate) anions. X-ray absorption near edge (XANES) at different energies (NK and Cu L2,3 edges) was also used to probe the interionic interactions. XANES data show that anion-cation interaction in the Cu-oxamate-imidazolium changes the electronic structure around the CuN sites in the oxamate anion.

Microwave-driven enzyme deactivation using imidazolium salt-presenting silica nanoparticles

Thermal enzyme deactivation by the imidazolium-presenting silica nanoparticles with the microwave irradiation is presented in this manuscript. The modified nanoparticles were synthesized, and it was observed that the modified nanoparticles can be a heat source in the buffer under the weak-power microwave irradiation. Finally, based on the heat-generating ability of these nanoparticles, deactivation of glutathione reductase and alkaline phosphatase with the modified nanoparticles were demonstrated.

Toxicity of ionic liquids prepared from biomaterials

In search of environmentally-friendly ionic liquids (ILs), 14 were prepared based on the imidazolium, pyridinium and choline cations, with bromide and several amino acids as anions. Good yields were obtained in the synthesis of pyridinium ILs and those prepared from choline and amino acids. Four of the ILs synthesized from choline and the amino acids arginine, glutamine, glutamic acid and cystine are described here for the first time. The toxicity of the synthesized ILs was checked against organisms of various levels of organization: the crustacean Artemia salina; Human cell HeLa (cervical carcinoma); and bacteria with different types of cell wall, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. The toxicity was observed to depend on both the cation and anion. Choline-amino acid ILs showed a remarkable low toxicity to A. salina and HeLa cell culture, ten times less than imidazolium and pyridinium ILs. None of ionic liquids exhibited marked toxicity to bacteria, and the effect was 2-3 orders of magnitude smaller than that of the antibiotic chloramphenicol.

Interaction of Novel Ionic Liquids with Soils

With the constant development of new ionic liquids, the understanding of the chemical fate of these compounds also needs to be updated. To this effect, the interaction of a number of novel ionic liquids with soils was determined. Therefore, three novel headgroups (ammonium, phosphonium, or pyrrolidinium) with single or quaternary substitution were tested on a variety of soils with high-to-low organic matter content and high-to-low cation exchange capacity, thereby trying to capture the full range of possible soil interactions. It was found that the ionic liquids with single butyl alkyl chain interacted more strongly with the soils (especially with a higher cation exchange capacity), at lower concentrations, than the quad-substituted ionic liquids. However, the quad-substituted ionic liquids interacted more strongly at higher concentrations, due to the double-layer formation, and induced stronger dipole interaction with previously sorbed molecules.
