Refining shape and size of silver nanoparticles using ion irradiation for enhanced and homogeneous SERS activity

We present green synthesis of silver nanoparticles in water using unirradiated and Ag15 + ion irradiated phytoextracts of Bergenia Ciliata leaf, Eupatorium adenophorum leaf, Rhododendron arboreum leaf and flower. The use of different plant extracts and their subsequent ion irradiation allow for successful refinement of nanoparticle size and morphology. Due to changes in reducing and capping agents the nanoparticle surface functionalization also varies which not only controls the morphology but also allows for surface oxidation and aggregation processes. In this work, we have synthesized silver nanoparticles which exhibit sizes in the range from 13 to 24 nm and having shapes like spherical, quasispherical, trigonal, hexagonal, cylindrical, dendritic assemblies, and porous nanoparticles. Owing to changes in the size and shape of the nanoparticles, their direct bandgap (2.05 eV - 2.48 eV) and local surface plasmon resonance (420 nm - 490 nm) could also be tuned. These nanoparticles are examined as SERS substrates, where their enhancement factors, limit of detection for methylene blue, and SERS substrate homogeneity have been tested. It has been observed the nanoparticles synthesized using unirradiated plant extracts present an enhancement factor of 106 with a limit of detection 10- 8 M. Whereas nanoparticles with refined morphology and shapes upon irradiation present high enhancement factors of >107 and detection limit down to 10- 9 M. In addition, uniformity in Raman spectra over the SERS substrates has been obtained for selected Ag NPs substrates synthesized using irradiated extracts with minimum relative standard deviation in enhancement factor < 12%.

Ferromagnetic Interlayer Coupling in CrSBr Crystals Irradiated by Ions

Layered magnetic materials are becoming a major platform for future spin-based applications. Particularly, the air-stable van der Waals compound CrSBr is attracting considerable interest due to its prominent magneto-transport and magneto-optical properties. In this work, we observe a transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic behavior in CrSBr crystals exposed to high-energy, non-magnetic ions. Already at moderate fluences, ion irradiation induces a remanent magnetization with hysteresis adapting to the easy-axis anisotropy of the pristine magnetic order up to a critical temperature of 110 K. Structure analysis of the irradiated crystals in conjunction with density functional theory calculations suggests that the displacement of constituent atoms due to collisions with ions and the formation of interstitials favors ferromagnetic order between the layers.

Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atom-probe tomography data quantifying component-ratios of multicomponent nano-precipitates in ion-irradiated ceria

Samples of ∼1 µm films of CeO2 doped with 2 wt% Mo, 1.5 wt% Ru, 0.75 wt% Pd, 0.5 wt% Re and 0.25 wt% Rh grown with pulsed laser deposition were irradiated with I2+ ions (610 °C and 730 °C, 1016 and 5 × 1016 I2+/cm2). For selected samples post-irradiation heat treatment was conducted (900 °C, 1100 °C). The specimens were sectioned with focused ion beam milling and characterized in a transmission electron microscope with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and with atom-probe tomography. Energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy was used to obtain elemental maps showing the distribution of dopants in the specimen after exposure. Some of these maps are discussed in detail in our companion article "Formation of multicomponent alloy particles in doped ceria under I2+ ion irradiation and thermal annealing" in the Journal of Nuclear Materials [1]. Advanced computational analysis could be used to more accurately quantify local compositions. Data is provided for additional regions of interest and one additional irradiation condition. The doped ceria film that was heat treated at 1100 °C delaminated from the substrate in most places. Samples were extracted from the underside of a delaminated piece and analyzed with atom-probe tomography. The resulting data show ceria and a Mo-rich particle and demonstrate that this approach is feasable in principle to study local compositions in a sample exposed to such extreme conditions.

Resistivity contrast imaging in semiconductor structures using ultra-low energy scanning electron microscopy

The damage-induced voltage alteration (DIVA) contrast mechanism in scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been studied in broad range of the primary electron beam energies, with a special emphasis on the ultra-low energy range. The SEM imaging contrast related to resistivity changes in the In_(0.55)Al_(0.45)P irradiated with He²⁺ ions of 600 keV was subjected to an analysis in a range of 10 keV down to 10 eV of primary electron energies. The problem of specimen charging in ultra-low energy range and its effect on the contrast in SEM images has been tackled for the first time. Contrary to expectations based on the classical total emission yield approach, the potentials formed at the highly resistive part of irradiated area led to dramatic increase in the intensity of registered signal for primary electron energies below E₁, which can be explained as signal saturation due to potential on the specimen surface acting as repeller for primary electrons. Nevertheless, the experimental data presenting the influence of the beam energy on the potential formation on the surface of an insulating material under electron irradiation have been presented for the first time in ultra-low energy regime.

Opto-electric and physio-chemical changes in oxygen ion irradiated natural Vermiculite mineral

The influence of 80 MeV O⁶⁺ ion on Vermiculite mineral in terms of its optical, dielectric, structural, chemical, and thermoluminescence (TL) properties have been reported in this paper for the first time. The structural disorder was computed from Urbach energy using Cody model, and was applied to reveal the variation of optical band gap with ion fluence. The ac conductivity (σ_ac) in both pristine and irradiated samples was found to obey Jonscher's power law. The mean crystallite size, micro strain and dislocation density were estimated from the analysis of X-Ray Diffraction pattern. The results of optical and dielectric parameters were found to be corroborated with structural changes of pristine and irradiated samples. FTIR spectroscopy of the samples reveals the broadening of bands and the decrease in overall intensity of the transmittance with the increase in ion fluence. Thermoluminescence studies were also performed to explore the dosimetric aspects of vermiculite. A prominent TL peak was observed around 148 °C to make Vermiculite a good dosimeter for eminent uses in radiation rich environs.

Sculpting Nanoscale Functional Channels in Complex Oxides Using Energetic Ions and Electrons

The formation of metastable phases has attracted significant attention because of their unique properties and potential functionalities. In the present study, we demonstrate the phase conversion of energetic-ion-induced amorphous nanochannels/tracks into a metastable defect fluorite in A₂B₂O₇ structured complex oxides by electron irradiation. Through in situ electron irradiation experiments in a scanning transmission electron microscope, we observe electron-induced epitaxial crystallization of the amorphous nanochannels in Yb₂Ti₂O₇ into the defect fluorite. This energetic-electron-induced phase transformation is attributed to the coupled effect of ionization-induced electronic excitations and local heating, along with subthreshold elastic energy transfers. We also show the role of ionic radii of A-site cations (A = Yb, Gd, and Sm) and B-site cations (Ti and Zr) in facilitating the electron-beam-induced crystallization of the amorphous phase to the defect-fluorite structure. The formation of the defect-fluorite structure is eased by the decrease in the difference between ionic radii of A- and B-site cations in the lattice. Molecular dynamics simulations of thermal annealing of the amorphous phase nanochannels in A₂B₂O₇ draw parallels to the electron-irradiation-induced crystallization and confirm the role of ionic radii in lowering the barrier for crystallization. These results suggest that employing guided electron irradiation with atomic precision is a useful technique for selected area phase formation in nanoscale printed devices.

Time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis of protein adsorption on a polyvinylidene difluoride surface modified by ion irradiation

We investigated the effects of nanoscopic surface modification of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) by plasma-based ion implantation on protein adsorption with time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analysis. The chemical composition of the LDPE and PVDF surfaces was changed by ion irradiation. In particular, irradiation substantially decreased the number of CH and CF bonds on the PVDF surface, but only slightly decreased that of CH bonds for LDPE. These decreases may reflect a higher hydrogen recombination rate of the LDPE than the PVDF surface. An increase in oxygen was observed on both the LDPE and PVDF surfaces following ion irradiation, but was saturated after irradiation of 1×10¹⁵cm^-2 on the PVDF surface. The hydrophilicity of the ion-irradiated LDPE surface was promoted with an increase of the total ion fluence. Ion irradiation also changed the surface properties of PVDF to become more hydrophilic, but the variation did not correlate with the total ion fluence presumably due to the presence of fluorine atoms and the saturation of oxidation. Both bovine serum albumin (BSA) and collagen adsorption were suppressed on the LDPE surface by ion irradiation, which may have resulted from a decrease of the hydrophobic interaction. By contrast, ion irradiation increased protein adsorption on the PVDF surface, and BSA was adsorbed more than collagen, whereas there was no difference in the adsorption between BSA and collagen on the ion-irradiated LDPE surface. Moreover, the adsorption of BSA decreased on the oxygen- and fluorine-rich PVDF surface. These results indicate that the nanoscopic composition changes on the PVDF surface affect the adsorption behavior of BSA. Specifically, ferroelectric property on the PVDF surface was changed by ion irradiation and the nanoscopic change in polarity presumably affected the protein adsorption. Our findings suggest that selective adsorption control of protein can be achieved by ion irradiation to PVDF surface.

Sub-micrometer 20MeV protons or 45MeV lithium spot irradiation enhances yields of dicentric chromosomes due to clustering of DNA double-strand breaks

In conventional experiments on biological effects of radiation types of diverse quality, micrometer-scale double-strand break (DSB) clustering is inherently interlinked with clustering of energy deposition events on nanometer scale relevant for DSB induction. Due to this limitation, the role of the micrometer and nanometer scales in diverse biological endpoints cannot be fully separated. To address this issue, hybrid human-hamster AL cells have been irradiated with 45MeV (60keV/μm) lithium ions or 20MeV (2.6keV/μm) protons quasi-homogeneously distributed or focused to 0.5×1μm(2) spots on regular matrix patterns (point distances up to 10.6×10.6μm), with pre-defined particle numbers per spot to provide the same mean dose of 1.7Gy. The yields of dicentrics and their distribution among cells have been scored. In parallel, track-structure based simulations of DSB induction and chromosome aberration formation with PARTRAC have been performed. The results show that the sub-micrometer beam focusing does not enhance DSB yields, but significantly affects the DSB distribution within the nucleus and increases the chance to form DSB pairs in close proximity, which may lead to increased yields of chromosome aberrations. Indeed, the experiments show that focusing 20 lithium ions or 451 protons per spot on a 10.6μm grid induces two or three times more dicentrics, respectively, than a quasi-homogenous irradiation. The simulations reproduce the data in part, but in part suggest more complex behavior such as saturation or overkill not seen in the experiments. The direct experimental demonstration that sub-micrometer clustering of DSB plays a critical role in the induction of dicentrics improves the knowledge on the mechanisms by which these lethal lesions arise, and indicates how the assumptions of the biophysical model could be improved. It also provides a better understanding of the increased biological effectiveness of high-LET radiation.

Characterization of ion-irradiation-induced nanodot structures on InP surfaces by atom probe tomography

Surfaces of InP were bombarded by 1.9 keV Ar(+) ions under normal incidence. The total accumulated ion fluence the samples were exposed to was varied from 1 × 10(17) cm(-2) to 3 × 10(18)cm(-2) and ion flux densities f of (0.4-2) × 10(14) cm(-2) s(-1) were used. Nanodot structures were found to evolve on the surface from these ion irradiations, their dimensions however, depend on the specific bombardment conditions. The resulting surface morphology was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM). As a function of ion fluence, the mean radius, height, and spacing of the dots can be fitted by power-law dependences. In order to determine possible local compositional changes in these nanostructures induced by ion impact, selected samples were prepared for atom probe tomography (APT). The results indicate that by APT the composition of individual InP nanodots evolving under ion bombardment could be examined with atomic spatial resolution. At the InP surface, the values of the In/P concentration ratio are distinctly higher over a distance of ~1 nm and amount to 1.3-1.8. However, several aspects critical for the analyses were identified: (i) because of the small dimensions of these nanostructures a successful tip preparation proved very challenging. (ii) The elemental compositions obtained from APT were found to be influenced pronouncedly by the laser pulse energy; typically, low energies result in the correct stoichiometry whereas high ones lead to an inhomogeneous evaporation from the tips and deviations from the nominal composition. (iii) Depending again on the laser energy, a prolific emission of Pn cluster ions was observed, with n ≤ 11.

Self-organizing nanodot structures on InP surfaces evolving under low-energy ion irradiation: analysis of morphology and composition

Surfaces of InP were bombarded by 1.9 keV Ar(+) ions under normal incidence. The total accumulated ion fluence Φ the samples were exposed to was varied from 1 × 10(17) cm(-2) to 3 × 10(18) cm(-2), and ion fluxes f of (0.4 - 2) × 10(14) cm(-2) s(-1) were used. The surface morphology resulting from these ion irradiations was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Generally, nanodot structures are formed on the surface; their dimensions (diameter, height and separation), however, were found to depend critically on the specific bombardment conditions. As a function of ion fluence, the mean radius r, height h, and spacing l of the dots can be fitted by power-law dependences: r ∝ Φ(0.40), h ∝ Φ(0.48), and l ∝ Φ(0.19). In terms of ion flux, there appears to exist a distinct threshold: below f ~ (1.3 ± 0.2) × 10(14) cm(-2) s(-1), no ordering of the dots exists and their size is comparatively small; above that value of f, the height and radius of the dots becomes substantially larger (h ~ 40 nm and r ~ 50 nm). This finding possibly indicates that surface diffusion processes could be important. In order to determine possible local compositional changes in these nanostructures induced by ion impact, selected samples were prepared for atom probe tomography (APT). The results indicate that APT can provide analytical information on the composition of individual InP nanodots. By means of 3D APT data, the surface region of such nanodots evolving under ion bombardment could be examined with atomic spatial resolution. At the InP surface, the values of the In/P concentration ratio are distinctly higher over a distance of approximately 1 nm and amount to 1.3 to 1.7.

Purification/annealing of graphene with 100-MeV Ag ion irradiation

Studies on interaction of graphene with radiation are important because of nanolithographic processes in graphene-based electronic devices and for space applications. Since the electronic properties of graphene are highly sensitive to the defects and number of layers in graphene sample, it is desirable to develop tools to engineer these two parameters. We report swift heavy ion (SHI) irradiation-induced annealing and purification effects in graphene films, similar to that observed in our studies on fullerenes and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Raman studies after irradiation with 100-MeV Ag ions (fluences from 3 × 10(10) to 1 × 10(14) ions/cm(2)) show that the disorder parameter α, defined by I D/I G ratio, decreases at lower fluences but increases at higher fluences beyond 1 × 10(12) ions/cm(2). This indicates that SHI induces annealing effects at lower fluences. We also observe that the number of graphene layers is reduced at fluences higher than 1 × 10(13) ions/cm(2). Using inelastic thermal spike model calculations, we estimate a radius of 2.6 nm for ion track core surrounded by a halo extending up to 11.6 nm. The transient temperature above the melting point in the track core results in damage, whereas lower temperature in the track halo is responsible for annealing. The results suggest that SHI irradiation fluence may be used as one of the tools for defect annealing and manipulation of the number of graphene layers.
