Optimizing laser cladding powder injection parameters to shape bioactive glass nano-coated zirconium oxide for biomedical application

Human body is highly sensitive and repairing often incurs pain and expenses. Strength of the materials degraded by poor joint (either weld or link). New material technology is proposed many biomaterials for repairing bone and tissue and also many bio-implantation applications. Especially bioactive material like bioactive glass is used for biomedical applications for replacement and repairing organs in human body. This research work focuses on suggesting material of S53P4 bioactive glass Nano-coated Zirconium dioxide for manufacturing artificial knee implant for fixing in human body. The substrate of Zirconium dioxide is Nano-coated with S53P4 bioactive glass by means of laser cladding process. The laser cladding process parameters were optimized by Taguchi method to enhance mechanical properties like compressive strength, wear resistance and microhardness of Zirconium dioxide implant material. The key parameters like Laser Power (1 kW, 2 kW, 3 kW and 4 kW), beam diameter (2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm), powder feed rate (10 g/min, 15 g/min, 20 g/min and 25 g/min) and scanning speed (3 mm/s, 4 mm/s, 5 mm/s and 6 mm/s) were considered. The optimal parameters result the higher compressive strength and microhardness are obtained as 373 MPa and 898.37 HV0.2 and minimum wear volume is attained as 0.148 mm3 in the Nano-coated implant material.

Achieving Multicolor Upconversion Emissions without Changing Compositions

It is widely recognized that a proper way of adjusting fluorescence color is meaningful for pushing forward upconversion materials to be utilized in anti-counterfeiting, display and solid-state lightning applications. Traditional routes that apply different host materials and/or doping categories to adjust fluorescence color have shown large color region tunability yet have to rely on complex synthesis process accompanied with time and raw material consumption. In this work, in order to get a wide luminous color gamut without depending on reciprocating synthesis, we desinged and provided a high-sensitizer-concentration upconversion crystals, hexagonal NaLuF₄:Yb³⁺/Er³⁺ (50/2 mol%), whose red-to-green emission intensity ratio can be conveniently tuned from 2.69 to 4.96 by simply modulating excitation power densities. The promoted three-photon-population progress of red emission achieved by using an intensive excitation laser is considered to be responsible for the facile upconversion modulation. The results may provide new ideas for emission color control that based on external parameters in identical host and the greatly amplified excitation power-sensitivity of NaLuF₄:Yb³⁺/Er³⁺ (50/2 mol%) is highly potential for fluorescence anti-fake and colorful display applications.

In-situ micro-Raman study of SnSe single crystals under atmosphere: Effect of laser power and temperature

Single crystal of tin selenide (SnSe) was studied by micro-Raman spectroscopy under atmosphere conditions. The effect of varying the incident laser power on the sample up to 2 mW was analyzed. The Raman spectra showed that the number of all vibrational modes have not decreased or increased, but all peaks red-shifted and softened obviously as the laser power increased to the threshold value. The temperature-dependent micro-Raman study of the single crystal was carried out for illustrating thermal effect due to the high incident laser power. A new SnSe₂ phase appeared at high temperature without vacuum and become the dominant phase at the surface of the crystal gradually because of oxidation. Detecting few amounts of SnSe₂ crystals on the surface of single crystal shows the high sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) was also used to confirm that the newly generated SnSe₂ phase is precipitated by SnSe under high temperature oxidation conditions. To study the Raman spectra of low thermal conductivity materials under high temperature and non-vacuum conditions, lower incident laser power should be used to avoid the influence of additional thermal effects.

Comparison of laser power output from the fiber tip during endovenous laser ablation against displayed power and the "first treatment" effect

OBJECTIVE

International guidelines recommend endovenous laser ablation as one of the first-line treatments for truncal venous reflux associated with varicose veins. Clinicians use linear endovenous energy density to measure the energy used during treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the power output from the fiber tip and to see if this changed with use.

METHODS

We placed 15 mL of water in a thermally insulated 25-mL beaker. Two thermocouples were placed equidistantly adjacent to the laser fiber tip. A 1470-nm laser was fired at 5W for 2 minutes and the temperature change was measured. Three fibers were used on different days to allow the laser to cool for 24 hours between fibers. Each fiber was tested three times in a row. We also tested the "first treatment" effect by comparing the power output when the fiber was fired immediately after the laser was switched on, compared with treatments when the laser had been switched on for 1 hour. To assess whether this was due to the console being "cold" on the first firing of the day, we repeated the experiment having switched on the laser console 1 hour before firing to "prewarm" the console. However, the diode was not fired during this hour. To measure fiber degradation, three runs of the experiment were performed successively before firing the laser continuously for 20 minutes, then three more runs were conducted, resulting in delivery of approximately 10,000 J.

RESULTS

The actual power output seemed to be lower than the console suggested. The power output from the first fiber used in a succession of three with the same laser had a significantly lower power output than the following two runs (P = .0004 and P < .0001, respectively). When the laser was prewarmed for 1 hour without firing, no change in this output pattern was noted (P = .293). Fiber degradation was not found in any of the fibers that were tested within the maximum recommended for the fiber (10,000 J).

CONCLUSIONS

The first use of a fiber in a treatment session has a significantly lower power output from the treatment tip than subsequent uses, even if the machine is prewarmed and the console displays the same power for each. The authors believe that this phenomenon is due to the diode being less efficient when first used after switching it on. Clinicians need to be aware that the true power output at the fiber tip may not be as indicated by the console display and may be variable during a treatment session.

A semi-empirical model to optimize continuous-flow hyperpolarized 129Xe production under practical cryogenic-accumulation conditions

Continuous-flow spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) with cryogenic accumulation is a powerful technique to generate multiple, large volumes of hyperpolarized (HP) 129Xe in rapid succession. It enables a range of studies, from dark matter tracking to preclinical and clinical MRI. Multiple analytical models based on first principles atomic physics and device-specific design features have been proposed for individual processes within HP 129Xe production. However, the modeling efforts have not yet integrated all the steps involved in practical, large volume HP 129Xe production process (e.g., alkali vapor generation, continuous-flow SEOP, and cryogenic accumulation). Here, we use a simplified analytical model that couples both SEOP and cryogenic accumulation, incorporating only two system-specific empirical parameters: the longitudinal relaxation time of the polycrystalline 129Xe "snow', T1snow, generated during cryogenic accumulation, and 2) the average Rb density during active, continuous-flow polarization. By fitting the model to polarization data collected from >140 L of 129Xe polarized across a range of flow and volume conditions, the estimates for Rb density and T1snow were 1.6 ± 0.1 × 1013 cm-3 and 84 ± 5 min, respectively - each notably less than expected based on previous literature. Together, these findings indicate that 1) earlier polarization predictions were hindered by miscalculated Rb densities, and 2) polarization is not optimized by maximizing SEOP efficiency with a low concentration 129Xe, but rather by using richer 129Xe-buffer gas blends that enable faster accumulation. Accordingly, modeling and experimentation revealed the optimal fraction of 129Xe, f, in the 129Xe-buffer gas blend was ~2%. Further, if coupled with modest increases in laser power, the model predicts liter volumes of HP 129Xe with polarizations exceeding 60% could be generated routinely in only tens of minutes.

Tissue Coagulation in Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty - An Experimental Study

Background

Laser hemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) is a new technique for treatment of hemorrhoids. The exact extent of coagulation is not visible at the time of the procedure. There currently is no experimental or clinical data on the subject.

Objective

To evaluate the length of coagulation defect according to power and activation time of 1470nm diode laser on the perianal tissue model.

Methods

Fresh anorectal tissue of twenty-four pigs was used to produce 54 experimental samples. Each sample was randomly assigned to the laser power of 6, 8 and 10 W and 1, 2 or 3-second pulses. The procedure was performed using Biolitec Ceralas © diode laser with 1.85 mm optical fiber. The fiber was inserted in a manner, similar to intrahemorrhoidal laser application. Samples were evaluated using low-power and high-power light microscopy by a single pathologist. The length of tissue injury was measured on high-magnification microscopy.

Results

The longest tissue injury (mean 3.93 mm) was caused by the longest laser exposure time (3 sec) with no significant difference between laser power used.

Conclusions

8 W 3-second application of the 1470nm diode laser results in coagulation area approximately 4 mm, and further coagulation should be initiated approximately 5 mm from the first one.

The effect of excitation laser power in Raman spectroscopic measurements of the degree of conversion of resin composites

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effect of excitation laser power in Raman spectrometry by comparing the spectra and the degree of conversion (DC) values obtained using excitation powers between 300 and 1000mW.

METHODS

Five commercial and three experimental resin composites were light cured at 1200mW/cm² for 10-20s from a commercial blue-violet LED dental curing unit. Raman spectra were collected from composite specimens within 9min after light-curing. The excitation laser (1064nm) was focused on the spot of 0.4mm in diameter. The following powers were used for specimen excitation (mW): 300, 400, 600, 800, and 1000. From Raman spectra, the DC values were calculated and compared among different laser powers. Also, vector-normalized Raman spectra collected using the lowest excitation power (300mW) were compared to those collected using the maximum excitation power (1000mW).

RESULTS

Varying the excitation laser power between 300 and 1000mW resulted in statistically significant differences in both the DC values and the intensity of particular spectral features. The effect of varying laser power on Raman spectra and obtained DC values was material-dependent. The DC values measured within an individual material using different laser powers varied between 3.2 and 7.2% (absolute DC difference). The spectral bands affected by variations in laser power were assigned to symmetric and asymmetric stretching of -CH₂ (2900-3100cm^-1), symmetric stretching of aliphatic CC (1640cm^-1) and scissoring of C-H (1458cm^-1).

SIGNIFICANCE

The DC can be artificially elevated through increasing excitation laser power. This effect should be considered in Raman spectroscopic evaluations of DC in specimens during ongoing post-cure polymerization.

Microablative fractional CO2 laser for the genitourinary syndrome of menopause: power of 30 or 40 W?

This retrospective case-control study aimed to compare 30 versus 40 W power of CO₂ laser for the therapy of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Postmenopausal women with severe intensity of dyspareunia and dryness were eligible to be included in this study. Primary outcomes were dyspareunia and dryness. Secondary outcomes were itching/burning, dysuria, frequency and urgency, Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), vaginal maturation value (VMV), and Vaginal Health Index Score (VHIS). One laser therapy was applied every month for 3 months. Outcomes were evaluated at baseline and 1 month following the 3rd therapy. Fifty (25 per group) women were included in this study. In the 30-W group, mean improvement of dyspareunia, dryness, itching/burning, FSFI, VMV, and VHIS was 6.1 ± 1.7, 6.0 ± 1.9, 5.9 ± 2.0, 16.6 ± 6.7, 29.9 ± 13.0, and 11.0 ± 2.9, respectively (within group comparisons all p < 0.001). In the 40-W group, mean improvement of dyspareunia, dryness, itching/burning, FSFI, VMV, and VHIS was 6.1 ± 1.7, 6.5 ± 2.0, 5.2 ± 2.5, 14.8 ± 7.1, 25.0 ± 13.4, and 10.5 ± 4.1, respectively (within-group comparisons, all p ≤ 0.001). Comparison between 30 and 40 W revealed that mean improvement or presence of all GSM symptoms and clinical signs was not statistically significant different. CO₂ laser therapy may improve GSM symptoms and clinical signs. This improvement did not seem to associate to power of 30 or 40 W.

Impact of Laser Power and Firing Angle on Coagulation Efficiency in Laser Treatment for Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome: An ex vivo Placenta Study

OBJECTIVE

To assess the impact of laser power and firing angle on coagulation efficiency for closing placental anastomoses in the treatment of twin-twin transfusion syndrome.

METHODS

We used an ex vivo blood-perfused human placenta model to compare time to complete coagulation using 30 vs. 50 W of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser power and using a firing angle of 90° vs. 45°. Placentas were perfused with pig blood at 5 mL/min. Differences were analyzed using independent-samples t test, Mann-Whitney U test, or χ2 test as appropriate.

RESULTS

Coagulation took less time and energy using 50 W (n = 53) compared to 30 W (n = 52), 11 vs. 22 s (p < 0.001), and 557 vs. 659 J (p = 0.007). Perpendicular coagulation (n = 53) took less time and energy compared to a 45° angle (n = 21), 11 vs. 17 s (p = 0.004), and 557 vs. 871 J (p = 0.004). Bleeding complicated 2 (3%) measurements in the 50-W group, 5 (10%) in the 30-W group, and 3 (14%) in the 45° group.

DISCUSSION

In a highly controlled model, a 50-W laser power setting was more energy efficient than 30 W in coagulating a placental vein. A more perpendicular laser firing angle resulted in more efficient coagulation. Furthermore, bleeding due to vessel wall disruption occurred more often with lower power and a more tangential approach.

Influence of laser power on atom probe tomographic analysis of boron distribution in silicon

The relationship between the laser power and the three-dimensional distribution of boron (B) in silicon (Si) measured by laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT) is investigated. The ultraviolet laser employed in this study has a fixed wavelength of 355nm. The measured distributions are almost uniform and homogeneous when using low laser power, while clear B accumulation at the low-index pole of single-crystalline Si and segregation along the grain boundaries in polycrystalline Si are observed when using high laser power (100pJ). These effects are thought to be caused by the surface migration of atoms, which is promoted by high laser power. Therefore, for ensuring a high-fidelity APT measurement of the B distribution in Si, high laser power is not recommended.

Microstructures, hardness and bioactivity of hydroxyapatite coatings deposited by direct laser melting process

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) coatings on bioinert metals such as Ti-6Al-4V are necessary for biomedical applications. Together, HAP and Ti-6Al-4V are biocompatible and bioactive. The challenges of depositing HAP on Ti-6Al-4V with traditional thermal spraying techniques are well founded. In this paper, HAP was coated on Ti-6Al-4V using direct laser melting (DLM) process. This process, unlike the traditional coating processes, is able to achieve coatings with good metallurgical bonding and little dilution. The microstructural and mechanical properties, chemical composition and bio-activities of the produced coatings were studied with optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Vickers hardness machine, and by immersion test in Hanks' solution. The results showed that the choice of the laser power has much influence on the evolving microstructure, the mechanical properties and the retainment of HAP on the surface of the coating. Also, the choice of laser power of 750 W led to no dilution. The microhardness results inferred a strong intermetallic-ceramic interfacial bonding; which meant that the 750 W coating could survive long in service. Also, the coating was softer at the surface and stronger in the heat affected zones. Hence, this process parameter setting can be considered as an optimal setting. The soak tests revealed that the surface of the coating had unmelted crystals of HAP. The CaP ratio conducted on the soaked coating was 2.00 which corresponded to tetra calcium phosphate. This coating seems attractive for metallic implant applications.
