Test-retest reliability of three life balance measures in people with neuromuscular disease: the activity card sort-NL, the activity calculator, and the occupational balance questionnaire

PURPOSE

Life balance is a new and important concept in occupational therapy. New measurements are needed to assess and evaluate life balance and interventions aimed to achieve this concept. This article describes the test-retest reliability of three life balance measures: the Activity Calculator (AC), Activity Card Sort (ACS-NL(18-64)) and Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ11-NL).

METHOD

Data collection took place among 50 participants with neuromuscular diseases: facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD, n = 25) or mitochondrial myopathy (MM, n = 25). The AC, the ACS-NL(18-64) and the OBQ11-NL were assessed twice with an interval of one week. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC-agreement) were applied to examine test-retest reliability.

RESULTS

The ICC of the AC-average total day score was .95 (95% CI .91-.97), whereas the ICC of the weights allocated to each activity was 0.80 (95% CI .77-0.82). The ICC of the ACS-NL(18-64) percentage retained activities was 0.92 (95% CI 0.86 - 0.96) and the ICC of the importance score per activity was- .76 (95% CI . 0.68-0.89). The ICC of the OBQ11-NL total score was .76 (95% CI 0.62-0.86).

CONCLUSION

All three tools showed good to excellent test-retest reliability in a sample of patients with FSHD or MM, which is promising for its use in clinical practice and research.

Perceived life balance among young adult students: a comparison between caregivers and non-caregivers

BACKGROUND

Young adult caregivers (YACs) are individuals aged 18-25 years who provide care to a loved one (parent, sibling) with frailty, disability, or illness. As young adults, the transition period between adolescence and adulthood can be more challenging for YACs than their peers without care responsibilities (non-YACs), as they have to integrate caregiving with other life areas (education, relationships). This study compared the perceived life balance and the psychological functioning (i.e., burnout, negative and positive affect, and life satisfaction) between YACs and non-YACs.

METHOD

An online cross-sectional survey was conducted among 74 YACs (85.1% females, 22.0 ± 2.1 years) and 246 non-YACs (76.0% females, 21.8 ± 2.0 years) studying in the Netherlands. The survey assessed demographic characteristics, caregiving characteristics (to be filled out only by the YACs), life balance, and psychological functioning. We used Chi-square tests for categorical variables and independent T-tests for continuous variables to examine possible differences in demographic characteristics between YACs and non-YACs. In addition, we used independent T-tests to compare the perceived life balance and psychological functioning between YACs and non-YACs.

RESULTS

YACs and non-YACs were similar on all the demographic characteristics, except for living status; fewer YACs (44.6%) than non-YACs (59.3%) lived on their own, with or without other students/friends (χ2 = 16.3, p = 0.01). YACs perceived slightly less balance in life than non-YACs (d = -.29, p = .03). Both groups did not differ in experiencing burnout, affect, and life satisfaction (all p > .05). They experienced high levels of burnout and moderate levels of life satisfaction.

DISCUSSION

Although YACs perceived a little less balance in life than non-YACs, this was not reflected in their psychological functioning. Healthcare professionals and school counselors may need to recognise the critical phase of all young adults and provide the support that could, for example, help them reduce burnout and enhance their quality of life.

[Translation of the Occupational Balance Questionnaire in French and its Validation]

Background. Questionnaires measuring occupational balance have been created in recent years, but those available in French are limited. Purpose. This study aimed to translate and transculturally adapt the Occupational Balance Questionnaire and to examine the internal consistency, test-retest reliability and convergent validity of the French version. Methodology. A cross-cultural validation was conducted with adults in Quebec (n = 69) and in French-speaking Switzerland (n = 47). Results. Internal consistency was good in both regions (α > 0.85). Test-retest reliability was satisfactory in Quebec (ICC = 0.629; p < 0.001), but a significant difference was found between the two measurement times in French-speaking Switzerland. Significant associations were found between the results of the Occupational Balance Questionnaire and those of the Life Balance Inventory (Quebec, r = 0.47; French-speaking Switzerland, r = 0.52). Implications. These initial results support the use of the OBQ-French in the general population of two French-speaking regions.

Translation and validation of the Chinese version of the Friedman life balance scale among nursing students: A psychometric analysis

AIM

To conduct a Chinese translation and validation of the Friedman Life Balance Scale (FLBS).

BACKGROUND

Prevalence of mental disorders is high among nursing students. Life balance is important for nursing students, which may help them increase efficiency in their studies and develop physical and psychological health. Yet, little is known about life balance in nursing students. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the status of life balance of the students to lay the foundation for exploring its associated factors.

DESIGN

A multi-centre cross-sectional design.

METHOD

The study was comprised of 420 nursing students from 15 hospitals and two educational institutes in East, North and Northeast China from July 2021 to January 2022. The Chinese version of the FLBS was translated and adapted based on published, standardized, international guidelines. Psychometric evaluation included floor and ceiling effects, factorial validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, diagnosis accuracy and calibration. The tests used for validity included floor and ceiling effects, confirmatory factor analysis, average extracted variance (AVE) value, composite reliability, correlations with life satisfaction and subjective well-being. The tests used for reliability incudes Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficients. Diagnosis accuracy was tested by the area under the curve and calibration was tested by Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test.

RESULTS

The Chinese version of the Friedman life balance scale did not demonstrate floor or ceiling effect, showing content validity is not limited. Confirmatory factor analysis showed acceptable model fit after it was modified. Convergent validity and discriminant validity of the Friedman life balance scale were supported, except subscales two and three were not discriminated well by AVE technique. The internal consistency was acceptable and the test-retest reliability was good with 0.858. The area under the curve was 0.762 and the optimal cut-off point for depressive symptoms was 44. Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test showed the calibration to be acceptable. Life balance is moderate among Chinese nursing students. The subscale "self-forgive, compassion, love" had the highest correlations with well-being and life satisfaction.

CONCLUSIONS

The Chinese version of the Friedman life balance scale is a suitable instrument for assessing life balance in Chinese-speaking contexts. It also may have potential utility in identifying nursing students with or without depressive symptoms that may need further examination. Future work should examine additional samples of Chinese nursing students, as well as, perhaps other student populations to determine the extent to which the psychometric properties of the FLBS generalize to other students and contexts.

Life balance and professional quality of life among baccalaureate nurse faculty

BACKGROUND

The nurse faculty shortage is a well-documented problem. The future workforce is dependent upon qualified faculty who desire to teach students.

PURPOSE

The purpose was to explore the relationship between nurse faculty life balance and quality of life.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted through surveying nurse faculty (N = 108). The Life Balance Inventory measured health, relationships, identity, challenge/interest, and activities of daily living with scores ranging from 1 (unbalanced) to 3 (very balanced). The Professional Quality of Life scale measured compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress with scores ranging from 22 or less (low), 23-41 (average), and 42 or more (high). Descriptive statistics and correlations were calculated.

RESULTS

Nurse faculty had moderate life balance (Mean = 2.23), average compassion satisfaction (Mean = 40.17), average burnout (Mean = 24.86), and low secondary traumatic stress (Mean = 20.14). The moderate and weak, negative correlations between total life balance and both burnout (r = -0.461, p < .001) and secondary traumatic stress (r = -0.267, p = .008) respectively were significant, but the correlation with compassion satisfaction (r = 0.174, p = .078) was not.

CONCLUSION

It is critical to create supportive work environments for nursing faculty that promote well-being and reduce burnout and stress.

Measuring occupational balance and its relationship to perceived stress and health: Mesurer l'équilibre occupationnel et sa relation avec le stress perçus et la santé

BACKGROUND

There is an assumption that occupational balance is integrally related to health and well-being.

PURPOSE

This study aimed to investigate test-retest reliability of the English-translated Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ), its relationship to measures of health (Short Form Health Survey-36 Version 2.0 [SF-36v2]) and stress (Perceived Stress Scale-10; PSS-10), and demographic differences in OBQ scores in Canadian adults.

METHOD

Test-retest reliability (2 weeks) was assessed using intraclass correlation (ICC) coefficients. Online surveys from 86 adults were analyzed using descriptive, correlational, and t test statistics.

FINDINGS

OBQ test-retest reliability was ICC = 0.74 (95% CI [0.34, 0.90]; p = .003) when excluding an influential case ( n = 20). OBQ correlations with PSS-10 were r = -.72; with SF-36v2 Mental Component Score, r = .65; and with Physical Component Score, r = .31; all p < .001. Age and gender had no impact on OBQ scores.

IMPLICATIONS

Findings help elucidate relationships among health, stress, and occupational balance; however, further psychometric testing is warranted before using OBQ for clinical purposes.
