Effects of different treatments of manure on mitigating methane emissions during storage and preserving the methane potential for anaerobic digestion

Current agricultural practices in regards to storage of manure come with a significant GHG contribution, due, to a big extent, to CH₄ emissions. For example, in Denmark, the agricultural sector is responsible for about 11.1 metric tons of CO₂ equivalents; only about 0.2 metric tons come directly from CO₂, while 6.0 tons come from CH₄. The present study aims at evaluating and comparing two methods based on their effect on suppressing CH₄ emissions during storage as well as on preserving and enhancing CH₄ yield in a subsequent anaerobic digestion step: the commonly applied acidification with H₂SO₄ as acidifying agent and thermal treatment at the mild temperatures of 70 and 90 °C (pasteurization). Although both treatments effectively suppressed CH₄ emissions during storage, they exhibited a significant difference in preserving and/or enhancing the CH₄ potential of manure. Specifically, thermal treatment resulted in 16-35% enhancement of CH₄ potential, while acidification resulted in decreasing the CH₄ yield by 6-23% compared to non-treated manure. Further investigation showed that storage itself positively affected the CH₄ potential of treated manure in a subsequent anaerobic digestion step; this was attributed to microbial activity other than biomethanation during storage. In overall and based on the results obtained regarding suppression of CH₄ emissions during storage as well as CH₄ potential enhancement, pasteurization at the temperatures tested is a promising alternative to the broadly applied acidification of manure.

Effects of different conditions tested "in vitro" on the phosphorus runoff potential of livestock manure

This study aimed to investigate the changes of swine and dairy manure characteristics during a long-term storage (150-180 days) under 4 °C, 20 °C, and 37 °C, sealed and unsealed conditions. Water extractable phosphorus (WEP) of both manures rapidly increased during the first 15-30 days and then decreased. At the end of the storage, the WEP reduction was 90%±3% and 71%±5% of the initial concentration for swine manure and dairy manure, respectively. Generally, unsealed storage and higher temperatures led to more WEP reduction. This study suggested that manure stored for less than 30 days had the highest P runoff potential, while a long-term manure storage reduced P runoff potential compared to freshly excreted manure.

Dairy and swine manure management - Challenges and perspectives for sustainable treatment technology

Global dairy and swine production growth has increased significantly over the past decades, resulting in higher manure generation in certain areas and environmental concerns. Therefore, manure management is an essential focus for farmers and environmental regulators. Systematic selection of manure management practices can provide environmental benefits, but accounting for local constraints, economics and farming practices are significant challenges. All these factors drive the selection of appropriate manure management systems (MMSs). MMSs are highly varied for their design, partly due to individual farm settings, geography, and the end-use applications of manure. However, the benefits of technological advancements in MMSs provide higher manure treatment efficiency and co-production of value-added products such as recycled water, fiber, sand bedding, and nutrient-rich bio-solids, among others. To achieve higher environmental benefits, advanced manure treatment technologies have to be implemented, which comes with additional costs. So, there is a tradeoff between environmental benefits and cost. With the above prospects, this article reviews: 1) the different treatment technologies used in dairy and swine farms, 2) the life cycle assessment (LCA) method's importance in evaluating various treatment technologies for better environmental returns, and 3) decision support tools (DST) and their significance in MMSs prioritization. We found considerable heterogeneity in the available datasets, mainly on crucial parameters such as water consumption, types and amount of bedding materials, manure removal frequency, manure treatment technologies, and the extent of resource recovery. Thus, suitable environmental impact assessment inventory models are needed to evaluate a more comprehensive range of treatment technologies in MMSs, representing the spatial and farming system heterogeneities. There is also a need for user-friendly DST with adjustable inputs for the functional components of MMSs and evaluation criteria, which can rapidly evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of alternative systems.

Biochar affects the dissipation of antibiotics and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in pig manure

Manure from medicated livestock contains pharmaceutical antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Bioavailable antibiotics trigger further ARGs amplification during manure storage. It was tested whether biochar lowers the bioavailability of the antibiotics sulfamethazine (SMZ), ciprofloxacin (CIP), oxytetracycline (OTC) and florfenicol (FF) in manure and the amplification of sul1 and tet(W) ARGs. To that end, liquid pig manure was treated with 5% (w/w) pinecone biochar (BCP). Antibiotics dissipated during 30-d incubation in the order SMZ < OTC < CIP < FF. Added BCP further immobilized SMZ, OTC and CIP, while the effect was not significant for FF. Both sul1 and tet(W) ARGs copy numbers significantly increased by factors of 5.8 and 2.5, respectively, in OTC and SMZ spiked manure. The abundance of sul1 was significantly decreased in BCP amended manure, while the impact on tet(W) was less. Consequently, biochar is suitable for the management of antibiotics contaminated manure during storage.

Lab-assay for estimating methane emissions from deep-pit swine manure storages

Methane emission is an important tool in the evaluation of manure management systems due to the potential impact it has on global climate change. Field procedures used for estimating methane emission rates require expensive equipment, are time consuming, and highly variable between farms. The purpose of this paper is to report a simple laboratory procedure for estimating methane emission from stored manure. The test developed was termed a methane production rate (MPR) assay as it provides a short-term biogas production measurement. The MPR assay incubation time is short (3d), requires no sample preparation in terms of inoculation or dilution of manure, is incubated at room temperature, and the manure is kept stationary. These conditions allow for high throughput of samples and were chosen to replicate the conditions within deep-pit manure storages. In brief, an unaltered aliquot of manure was incubated at room temperature for a three-days to assay the current rate of methane being generated by the manure. The results from this assay predict an average methane emission factor of 12.2 ± 8.1 kg CH4 head(-1) yr(-1) per year, or about 5.5 ± 3.7 kg CH4 per finished animal, both of which compare well to literature values of 5.5 ± 1.1 kg CH4 per finished pig for deep-pit systems (Liu et al., 2013). The average methane flux across all sites and months was estimated to be 22 ± 17 mg CH4 m(-2)-min(-1), which is within literature values for deep-pit systems ranging from 0.24 to 63 mg CH4 m(-2)-min(-1) (Park et al., 2006) and similar to the 15 mg CH4 m(-2)-min(-1) estimated by (Zahn et al., 2001).
