Abstract
AIMS To explore the effectiveness of the Taiwanese Diabetes Shared Care Program (DSCP) on improving the metabolic indicators of people with type 2 diabetes. METHODS Relevant studies published between January 2002 and August 2021 were retrieved from Chinese- and English-language electronic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, ProQuest, Cochrane Library, Airiti Library, and Taiwan Periodical Literature System. After screening, studies that met inclusion criteria were included in the literature review. RevMan 5.4 was employed for a meta-analysis. RESULTS Ten studies published between 2007 and 2021 were included in the systematic review, with nine of them contributing to the meta-analysis. In total, 1506 and 1388 participants were classified into DSCP and non-DSCP groups, respectively, for the meta-analysis. The results revealed that the DSCP significantly improved glycated hemoglobin levels (mean difference [MD]: -0.50, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: -0.83 to -0.17) and body weights (MD: -0.83, 95% CI: -1.29 to -0.38) within 1-year follow-up. However, it did not show significant improvement in other metabolic indicators. CONCLUSIONS Taiwanese DSCP led to improvements in glycated hemoglobin levels and body weights among people with type 2 diabetes. This study suggests that people with diabetes and health-care institutions should consider participating in the DSCP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and periodontitis significantly affect women's oral and systemic health worldwide, and yet increase the risk of cardiovascular-metabolic diseases like diabetes and coronary heart disease. Regarding the PCOS-periodontitis connection, whether sex hormones, metabolic and inflammatory mediators could account for the underlying linking mechanism needs to be further investigated. This case-control study evaluated the hormonal, metabolic and inflammatory profiles in PCOS and non-PCOS subjects with various periodontal conditions, via assessing serum and saliva samples by Raman spectroscopy. METHODS A total of 66 females with PCOS and 22 systemically healthy female volunteers were recruited in a single hospital. Full-mouth periodontal examination was undertaken for identifying the subjects with periodontal health, gingivitis or periodontitis. The datasets of sex hormones and metabolic indicators were retrieved from the hospital information system. Both serum and saliva samples were collected for detecting inflammatory mediators and Raman spectroscopic assessment. The subjects were categorized into four groups according to their conditions of PCOS and periodontitis for Raman spectroscopic analysis. Partial least squares discriminant analysis was performed to examine the inter-group differences in Raman spectra. RESULTS PCOS patients exhibited greater mean probing depth (P < 0.05) and higher serum levels of triglycerides (P < 0.05) and matrix metalloproteinase-8 (P < 0.05) than those in non-PCOS participants. Both probing depth and triglyceride level were positively correlated with PCOS (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in mean Raman spectra of saliva samples among the four groups with different conditions of PCOS and periodontitis (P < 0.05), while no significant inter-group difference existed in serum samples. CONCLUSIONS The present study shows that periodontal condition may affect the biomolecular profiles of Raman spectra in serum and saliva of PCOS patients. It underscores the importance of the collaborative teamwork of dentists and gynecologists for enhancing women's oral health, general wellbeing and quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes is a global concern among adults. Previous studies have suggested an association between different screening methods and diabetes; however, increasing evidence has suggested the importance of early screening for diabetes mellitus (DM) and its influencing factors. In this study, we aimed to explore whether the non-invasive detection of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the early screening of DM in the Chinese community and whether body mass index (BMI) and metabolic indexes could moderate this relationship. METHODS Three community health service centers in Hefei that signed the medical consortium agreement with the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University were selected to screen the population aged 30-90 years in each community using a multi-stage cluster sampling method from January 2018 to January 2019. Univariate analysis of variance was used to compare the differences in general data, biochemical indexes, skin AGEs levels, and blood glucose among groups. In addition, a multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed. RESULTS A total of 912 patients with a community health physical examination and no history of diabetes were selected, excluding those with missing values > 5%. Finally, 906 samples were included in the study with an effective rate of 99.3%. The prevalence in the normal, impaired glucose tolerance, and DM groups were 79.8%, 10.0%, and 10.2%, respectively. By dividing AGE by quartile, AGE accumulation was classified as ≤ P25, P25-P50, P50-P75, and > P75. Higher AGE accumulation (χ2 = 37.95), BMI (χ2 = 12.20), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (χ2 = 8.46), triglyceride (TG) (χ2 = 6.23), and older age (χ2 = 20.11) were more likely to have a higher prevalence of fasting blood glucose (FBG). The analyses revealed significant correlations between AGE accumulation, BMI, TG, total cholesterol (TC), and FBG (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION As the findings indicate, priority should be given to the quality of metabolic-related indicators, such as BMI, TG, and TC, employed to effectively reduce the FBG of Chinese participants with high AGE accumulation. Skin autofluorescence may prove to be a rapid and non-invasive method for assessing the metabolic progression of all glucose level layers.

Abstract
Conflicting reports of HRT necessitates exploration of therapeutic interventions with the least side effects to preserve metabolic homeodynamics in women later in life. The current study was designed to elucidate the cumulative effects of aging and/or high fat diet (HFD) on some metabolic indicators and their management by Tinospora cordifolia stem powder (TCP) using middle-aged acyclic and young adult cyclic female rats as the model system. Animals were fed on either normal chow or HFD supplemented with or without TCP. Blood and liver tissue were collected for biochemical, and histological studies as well as for expression of proteins regulating lipid metabolism. Animals fed with TCP supplemented normal chow feed showed bodyweight management over 12-weeks despite their high feed and calories intake compared to young and age-matched controls as well as HFD-fed animals. TCP dose used was not toxic and rather prevented age-associated liver dysfunctions and ameliorated dyslipidemia and oxidative stress, normalized blood glucose, insulin, leptin, and secretary pro-inflammatory cytokines. Further, bodyweight management effect of TCP was observed to target AMPK signalling pathway as the mediator of lipogenesis, sterol biosynthesis, lipolysis, and β-oxidation of fatty acids. These findings suggest that TCP supplementation in diet may be a potential interventional strategy to ameliorate aging-associated hepatic and metabolic dysfunctions and to promote healthy aging.

Abstract
PURPOSE Pediatric diabetes is a common health burden worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of fasting hyperglycemia in Korean youth aged 10-18 years and to evaluate its association with metabolic indicators. METHODS To assess the risk of diabetes in domestic children and adolescents, the prevalence of fasting hyperglycemia was calculated, a trend was evaluated using multi-year Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data, and multivariate analysis was performed to evaluate the relationships between hyperglycemia and metabolic factors. RESULTS The prevalence of fasting hyperglycemia, defined as impaired fasting glucose (fasting glucose level > 100 mg/dL and < 125 mg/dL), or diabetes mellitus (fasting glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL) was estimated in Korean teenagers. The prevalence increased from the fourth (2007-2009) to the fifth (2010-2012), sixth (2013-2015), and seventh (2016-2018) KNHANES surveys, from 5.39 to 4.79, 10.03, and 11.66 per 100 persons, respectively. In multivariate analysis, systolic blood pressure and serum triglycerides were higher in the fasting hyperglycemia group; systolic blood pressures were 109.83 mmHg and 112.64 mmHg and serum triglycerides were 81.59 mg/dL and 89.60 mg/dL in the normal blood glucose and fasting hyperglycemia groups, respectively. CONCLUSION The prevalence of fasting hyperglycemia among children and adolescents has increased over the past decade, and this increase is potentially associated with metabolic abnormalities such as hypertension and hypertriglyceridemia. Effort is urgently required to reduce this chronic medical burden in adolescence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have found that exposed to low and high outdoor temperature was associated with cardiovascular diseases morbidity and mortality. The risk factors for cardiovascular disease include high blood lipid, high uric acid (UA) and high fasting plasma glucose (FPG). However, few studies have explored the effects of low and high temperature on these metabolic indicators. OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of low and high temperature on metabolic indicators in adults from northwest of China. METHODS Based on a prospective cohort study, a total of 30,759 individuals who participated in both baseline and first follow-up from 2011 to 2015 were selected in this study. The meteorological observation data and environmental monitoring data were collected in the same period. Associations between cold and hot temperature and blood lipid (total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C)), UA and FPG were conducted with mixed effect models after adjusting for confounding factors. RESULTS A nonlinear relationship between outdoor temperature and metabolic indicators was found. For the cold effects, each 5 °C decrease of mean temperature was associated with an increase of 5.07% (95% CI: 3.52%, 6.63%) in TG and 2.85% (95% CI: 2.18%, 3.53%) in UA, While a decrease of 3.38% (95% CI: 2.67%, 4.09%) in HDL-C and 1.26% (95% CI: 0.48%, 2.04%) in LDL-C. For the heat effects, each 5 °C increase in mean temperature was associated with 1.82% (95% CI: 0.89%, 2.76%), 0.56% (95% CI: 0.11%, 1.00%), 5.82% (95% CI: 4.58%, 7.06%), 9.02% (95% CI: 7.17%, 10.87%), 0.20% (95% CI: 0.01%, 0.40%), and 1.22% (95% CI: 0.19%, 2.24%) decrease in TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C, UA and FPG. Age, smoking, drinking, high-oil diet and hyperlipidemia might modify the association between mean temperature and metabolic indicators. CONCLUSION There was a significant effect of cold and hot temperature on metabolic indicators in a high altitude area of northwestern China. These results provide a basis for understanding the underlying mechanism of the influence of temperature on metabolic diseases.

Abstract
In healthcare facilities, environmental microbes are responsible for numerous infections leading to patient's health complications and even death. The detection of the pathogens present on contaminated surfaces is crucial, although not always possible with current microbial detection technologies requiring sample collection and transfer to the laboratory. Based on a simple sonochemical coating process, smart hospital fabrics with the capacity to detect live bacteria by a simple change of colour are presented here. Prussian Blue nanoparticles (PB-NPs) are sonochemically coated on polyester-cotton textiles in a single-step requiring 15 min. The presence of PB-NPs confers the textile with an intensive blue colour and with bacterial-sensing capacity. Live bacteria in the textile metabolize PB-NPs and reduce them to colourless Prussian White (PW), enabling in situ detection of bacterial presence in less than 6 h with the bare eye (complete colour change requires 40 h). The smart textile is sensitive to both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, responsible for most nosocomial infections. The redox reaction is completely reversible and the textile recovers its initial blue colour by re-oxidation with environmental oxygen, enabling its re-use. Due to its simplicity and versatility, the current technology can be employed in different types of materials for control and prevention of microbial infections in hospitals, industries, schools and at home.

Abstract
This trial evaluated the individual and interactional effects of diet and type of pregnancy (twin or single) on plasma metabolic response in ewes and their lambs from late pre-partum to late post-partum. Thus, a flock of 18 Ile de France breed sheep, consisting of 8 twin-bearing and 10 single-bearing ewes, were allocated to one of two groups according to their diet, either based on ad libitum naturalized pasture hay (NPH) or red clover hay (RCH), from d 45 pre-partum to d 60 post-partum. Plasma samples were collected at different times to determine albumin, cholesterol, total protein and urea, plus glucose and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentration in ewes. The data was processed using the lme4 package for R, and SPSS Statistics 23.0 for Windows. The results showed that both diet and type of pregnancy influenced the metabolic profile in ewes, showing an inverse relationship between single- and twin-bearing ewes regarding glucose and especially BHB proportions from pre-partum to birth. During post-partum, higher urea concentrations were observed in twin- and single-bearing ewes fed RCH in contrast to those fed NPH, as a result of the higher-quality forage offered to ewes. Regarding lambs, the diet and type of pregnancy influenced the total protein and urea levels, where an inverse relationship at birth and early post-partum between albumin and cholesterol vs. total protein and urea was detected, reflecting a trend (P value between 0.06 and 0.07) to a better performance by groups of single lambs, especially those from single-bearing ewes fed RCH. Finally, under the conditions of this study, the maternal diet and type of pregnancy influenced the plasma metabolic response in ewes and their lambs, affecting the lamb performance especially at birth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been consistently associated with subsequent gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Women with PCOS showed a high prevalence of obesity, which raises the question regarding the role of obesity or PCOS pe ser in development of GDM. In this study we conducted a 2-phase study to compare the risk of GDM and its associated early pregnancy metabolic factors in women with and without PCOS, stratified by pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). METHODS A 2-phase design was used in this study. The initial phase of the study included 566 age- and pre-pregnancy BMI-matched singleton pregnant women (242 with and 324 without PCOS). Risk of GDM and associated early-pregnancy risk factors were explored between women with and without PCOS, after stratification by pre-pregnancy BMI. Stratified analysis was conducted in normal weight (pre-pregnancy BMI < 25 kg/m2) and overweight/obese (pre-pregnancy BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) groups. Subsequently, the findings was confirmed in a separate cohort study with 18,106 participants (877 with and 17,229 without PCOS). RESULTS Overall, prevalence of GDM is higher in women with PCOS. Results from the initial study showed that in normal-weight subjects, there is a significant increase in GDM prevalence in PCOS women than non-PCOS women (26.5% vs. 16.2%, p = 0.02). Additionally, normal-weight PCOS women showed higher triglycerides levels (1.51 ± 0.84 mmol/L vs. 1.30 ± 0.75 mmol/L, p = 0.02), lower SHBG levels (277.8 ± 110.2 nmol/L vs. 330.5 ± 180.4 nmol/L, p = 0.001) and a possible trend towards higher insulin resistance (LogHoMA-IR 0.70 ± 0.55 vs. 0.57 ± 0.57, p = 0.05) during early pregnancy. However, in overweight/obese group, no difference in risk of GDM was observed between PCOS and non-PCOS subjects (p = 0.7). Results from the independent cohort confirmed the risk for GDM associated with PCOS in normal weight women (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Consistent findings from the 2-phase study showed an increased risk of GDM in normal-weight, but not overweight/obese PCOS women. Analysis of early-pregnancy risk factors of GDM suggested that the pathogenesis of GDM in normal weight and overweight/obese women with PCOS may be different.
