[A successfully treated case of respiratory failure caused by eating Nassariidaes]

Food poisoning caused by Nassariidaes has occurred frequently in coastal areas of China, especially in summer and autumn. Nassariidaes poisoning can be manifested as lip and tongue paralysis, dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting, arrhythmia and even respiratory failure. We admitted a case of respiratory failure caused by eating Nassariidaes. After timely respiratory support, hemoperfusion and other active treatment, the patient was recovered and was discharged. This paper summarized clinical characteristics and treatment of Nassariidaes poisoning, in order to provide reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment of similar cases.

Morphological and molecular characterization of larval trematodes infecting the assassin snail genus Anentome in Thailand

The assassin snail genus Anentome is widespread in Southeast Asia, and is distributed all over the world via the aquarium trade. One species of genus Anentome, Anentome helena, is known to act as intermediate host of parasitic trematodes. This study investigates the taxonomic diversity of larval trematodes infecting A. helena and Anentome wykoffi in Thailand. Larval trematodes were identified by combining morphological and DNA sequence data (cytochrome c oxidase I and internal transcribed spacer 2). Species delimitation methods were used to explore larval trematode species boundaries. A total of 1107 specimens of Anentome sp. were collected from 25 localities in Thailand. Sixty-two specimens of A. helena (n = 33) and A. wykoffi (n = 29) were infected by zoogonid cercariae, heterophyid metacercariae and echinostome metacercariae, with an overall prevalence of 5.6% (62/1107) and population-level prevalences in the range of 0.0-22.3%. DNA sequence data confirmed that the larval trematodes belong to the families Echinostomatidae, Heterophyidae and Zoogonidae. As such, this is the first report of zoogonid cercariae and heterophyid metacercariae in A. helena, and echinostome metacercariae in A. wykoffi. Moreover, this study provides evidence of tentative species-level differentiation between Thai Echinostoma sp. and Cambodian Echinostoma mekongi, as well as within Echinostoma caproni, Echinostoma trivolvis and Echinostoma revolutum.

Pronocephaloid cercariae (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda) from gastropods of the Queensland coast, Australia

The superfamily Pronocephaloidea Looss, 1899 comprises digeneans occurring in the gut and respiratory organs of fishes, turtles, marine iguanas, birds and mammals. Although many life cycles are known for species of the Notocotylidae Lühe, 1909 maturing in birds and mammals, relatively few are known for the remaining pronocephaloid lineages. We report the cercariae of five pronocephaloid species from marine gastropods of the Queensland coast, Australia. From Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef, we report three cercariae, two from Rhinoclavis vertagus (Cerithiidae) and one from Nassarius coronatus (Nassariidae). From Moreton Bay, southern Queensland, an additional two cercariae are reported from two genotypes of the gastropod worm shell Thylacodes sp. (Vermetidae). Phylogenetic analysis using 28S rRNA gene sequences shows all five species are nested within the Pronocephaloidea, but not matching or particularly close to any previously sequenced taxon. In combination, phylogenetic and ecological evidence suggests that most of these species will prove to be pronocephalids parasitic in marine turtles. The Vermetidae is a new host family for the Pronocephaloidea.

Host Specificity and Ecology of Digenean Parasites of Nassariid Gastropods in Central Queensland, Australia, with Comments on Host-Parasite Associations of the Nassariidae

Nassariid gastropods are well represented in Australia, and Nassarius dorsatus (Röding), Nassarius olivaceus (Bruguière), and Nassarius pullus (Linnaeus) are common in the intertidal mangroves of the Capricornia region in Central Queensland. A survey of the digenean trematode fauna of nassariids of the region revealed cercariae of 12 species from six trematode families associated with these gastropods. Six species of Acanthocolpidae were found, including three putative species of the genus Stephanostomum. Additionally, two species of Himasthlidae and one species each of Microphallidae, Opecoelidae, Zoogonidae, and Lepocreadiidae were identified. The majority of the trematode species identified were found in only one host species; only four infected more than one species of nassariid. Sixteen new host-parasite combinations were added to the fauna known to infect the Nassariidae. Broader examination of host-parasite associations shows that families using nassariids commonly as first intermediate host are the Acanthocolpidae, Lepocreadiidae, and Zoogonidae, as well as Himasthla spp. from the Himasthlidae. Nassariid gastropods are also the dominant marine first intermediate hosts for the Acanthocolpidae, Lepocreadiidae, and Zoogonidae and one of the three most common first intermediate host families for marine Himasthla spp.

High energetic cost of oviposition in an edible marine gastropod

The edible neogastropod Buccinanops cochlidium from Patagonia, Argentina, reproduces by means of egg capsules attached by the female to its own shell. Gravid females lay an outstanding mean of 500,000 eggs that nurse around 800 embryos, which hatch as crawling juveniles (4mm in shell length) after four months of intracapsular development. This reproductive investment could be expressed as the energy content (EC) estimated for the production of a complete egg mass (33.94±12.85 KJ), representing a conservative estimation of the total EC needed for an adult female to spawn, which is in average ∼12% of the total EC in gravid females. This high maternal investment allows a considerable offspring size, which confers them high survival chances. A translocation of energy stored in the foot during the oviposition season is shown in a relative decrease of ∼10% in the foot EC in respect of the total EC (61.8% in non-gravid females vs. 51.3% in gravid females). Gravid females showed significantly higher body wet mass/shell length index and higher total EC than non-gravid females (266.0±66.4 KJ vs. 184.3±69.6 KJ), suggesting that a body condition threshold is required for females to reproduce. These values represent an energetic surplus of over 40% of the total EC per individual when compared to non-gravid females. Protecting gravid females from fisheries would ensure the sustainability of the resource and must be taken into account when establishing fisheries policies.
