Amphetamine exposure and dementia - A hypothesis of the long term sequelae of cognitive enhancers based on opponent process theory

Dementia is a cluster of brain dysfunctions with a characteristic of progressively debilitating in individuals' ability of operating cognitive functions and that affects seriously to patients' daily life. We presented a hypothesis in this article that earlier exposure of a common used cognitive enhancer amphetamine may lead to individuals to be more liable to develop dementia in their later life based on the opponent process theory. The theory proposes that following a positive response, homeostatic changes in brain circuits may function to go opposite to the positive response, thus a cognitive deterioration may incur in later life in the individuals who exposed to amphetamine earlier. Along with the hypothesis, amphetamine is also highly associated with the working hypothesis updated for dementia in terms of beta-amyloid cascade, tau protein, oxidative stress and neural inflammation. Finally, we presented two practical methods to evaluate the hypothesis. In non-human approach, rat model of amphetamine dependence would be employed together with evaluations of behavioral performance of memory test and neurochemical markers associated with oxidative stress. In human approach, a matched-cohort design observational study would be highly recommended.

Cortical Color and the Cognitive Sciences

Back when researchers thought about the various forms that color vision could take, the focus was primarily on the retinal mechanisms. Since that time, research on human color vision has shifted from an interest in retinal mechanisms to cortical color processing. This has allowed color research to provide insight into questions that are not limited to early vision but extend to cognition. Direct cortical connections from higher-level areas to lower-level areas have been found throughout the brain. One of the classic questions in cognitive science is whether perception is influenced, and if so to what extent, by cognition and whether a clear distinction can be drawn between perception and cognition. Since perception is seen as providing justification for our beliefs about properties in the external world, these questions also have metaphysical and epistemological significance. The aim of this paper is to highlight some of the areas where research on color perception can shed new light on questions in the cognitive sciences. A further aim of the paper is to raise some questions about color research that are in dire need of further reflection and investigation.

The dynamic opponent relativity model: an integration and extension of capacity theory and existing theoretical perspectives on the neuropsychology of arousal and emotion

Arousal theory as discussed within the present paper refers to those mechanisms and neural systems involved in central nervous system activation and more specifically the systems involved in cortical activation. Historical progress in the evolution of arousal theory has led to a better understanding of the functional neural systems involved in arousal or activation processes and ultimately contributed much to our current theories of emotion. Despite evidence for the dynamic interplay between the left and right cerebral hemispheres, the concepts of cerebral balance and dynamic activation have been emphasized in the neuropsychological literature. A conceptual model is proposed herein that incorporates the unique contributions from multiple neuropsychological theories of arousal and emotion. It is argued that the cerebral hemispheres may play oppositional roles in emotion partially due to the differences in their functional specializations and in their persistence upon activation. In the presence of a threat or provocation, the right hemisphere may activate survival relevant responses partially derived from hemispheric specializations in arousal and emotional processing, including the mobilization of sympathetic drive to promote heightened blood pressure, heart rate, glucose mobilization and respiratory support necessary for the challenge. Oppositional processes and mechanisms are discussed, which may be relevant to the regulatory control over the survival response; however, the capacity of these systems is necessarily limited. A limited capacity mechanism is proposed, which is familiar within other physiological systems, including that providing for the prevention of muscular damage under exceptional demand. This capacity theory is proposed, wherein a link may be expected between exceptional stress within a neural system and damage to the neural system. These mechanisms are proposed to be relevant to emotion and emotional disorders. Discussion is provided on the possible role of currently applied therapeutic interventions for emotional disorders.
