Attachment avoidance and internalizing symptoms: Does respiratory sinus arrhythmia withdrawal make a difference?

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the association between attachment avoidance and internalizing symptoms and the moderating role of parasympathetic nervous activity (indexed by respiratory sinus arrhythmia withdrawal) in the association.

METHODS

A sample of 109 (M_age = 18.94 years old, SD = 0.92; 69 male) Chinese college students participated in this study. Participants reported attachment avoidance and internalizing symptoms, and their physiological data were collected.

RESULTS

Results showed a positive link between attachment avoidance and internalizing symptoms. Further, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) withdrawal and attachment avoidance interactively predicted internalizing symptoms. Specifically, the positive relation between attachment avoidance and internalizing symptoms was only found among people of low, but not high, levels of RSA withdrawal.

CONCLUSION

Our study highlighted the importance of considering psychophysiological interactions in predicting internalizing symptoms in college students, and contributed to our understanding of the complicated factors underlying college students' internalizing problems.

Parasympathetic Nervous Activity Associated with Discoordination Between Physical Acceleration and Heart Rate Variability in Patients with Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) often accompanies alterations in heart rate variability (HRV). The severity of SAS is sometimes evaluated using the oxygen desaturation index (ODI). We hypothesized that effects of the autonomic nervous system could be involved in the coordination between HRV and physical acceleration during free movement in patients with SAS. Among 33 women aged 60 years or older, 19 had a high ODI (>5). Their HRV and physical acceleration were simultaneously obtained every minute for 24 hours. The low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio and the high frequency in normalized units (HFnu) were used as HRV indices. Low levels of %Lag0, defined as the percentage of the lag = 0 min in 1 h, indicated coordination between physical acceleration and HRV. Nineteen participants were divided into group A (high %Lag0 before sleep [n = 9]) or group B (low %Lag0 [n = 10]). In group B participants with a high ODI and low %Lag0 in the hour after waking, HFnu was significantly increased compared to that in group A participants with high ODI and high %Lag0 in the hour after waking (p < 0.05). These results suggest that close associations between high ODI and discoordination between HRV and physical acceleration may be due to higher parasympathetic nervous system activity after waking.

Cardiac autonomic activity during sleep deprivation with and without caffeine administration

Caffeine is often consumed to mitigate degraded alertness associated with sleep deprivation. Both caffeine and sleep deprivation have been implicated in cardiovascular disease, but evidence is largely anecdotal. We determined the effects of sleep deprivation and caffeine on markers of cardiac autonomic activity. Twelve healthy young adults completed an 18-day laboratory study. They were exposed to three 48 h sessions of acute total sleep deprivation (TSD), each separated by three recovery days. In randomized, counter-balanced order, subjects received 0 mg (placebo), 200 mg, or 300 mg of caffeine at 12 h intervals during each sleep deprivation session. Every 2 h during scheduled wakefulness, a 15-minute neurobehavioral task battery was administered, during which heart rate (HR) and the high frequency (HF) component of the HR variability power spectrum (HF-HRV) were measured. Caffeine administration decreased HR and increased HF-HRV, indicating elevated parasympathetic activity. The 300 mg caffeine dose did not significantly affect autonomic activity to a greater extent than the 200 mg dose. There was no significant effect of 48 h of TSD on HR, whereas there was a small increase across hours awake in HF-HRV. There was no significant interaction of TSD with caffeine. Circadian rhythmicity in HR and HF-HRV surpassed the magnitude of the effects of caffeine and TSD. Caffeine and acute TSD thus produced only modest changes in cardiac autonomic activity, unlikely to have immediate clinical implications in healthy young adults. However, further research is needed to determine the long-term effects of chronic exposure to sleep loss and/or caffeine on cardiac health, and to determine the generalizability of our findings to non-healthy populations.
