The mitochondrial genome of Prosthiochaeta sp. (Diptera: Platystomatidae)

The mitochondrial genome of Prosthiochaeta sp. was sequenced and annotated as a new representative of family Platystomatidae. The nearly complete mitochondrial genome of Prosthiochaeta sp. is 16,169 bp totally, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs, and 22 transfer RNAs, which gene frame is similar with other dipteran mitogenomes. The nucleotide composition biases toward A and T is 70.8% of the entirety. IQ-tree analysis revealed that Tephritoidea including Prosthiochaeta sp. was monophyletic as a sister group to Opomyzoidea and Syrphoidea. Tephritoidea as well as Syrphoidea and Opomyzoidea were nested in Ephydroidea, while Lauxanioidea and Sciomyzoidea were assigned to be sister groups. Platypezoidea was monophyletic as a basal clade of phylogenetic tree.

First mitochondrial genome of Euprosopia sp. (Diptera: Platystomatidae)

Platystomatid flies, one of the largest families in Diptera. Here, we determined the complete mitogenome of Euprosopia sp., which is the first for the family Platystomatidae. The 16,266 base pair (bp) mitogenome comprises of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and a control region. The gene order and the orientation are similar to those of other sequenced Acalyptratae species except tRNASer(AGN) gene were substituted by another tRNAPhe gene. All PCGs start with ATN codons, except COI and ND1, and end with TAA or incomplete stop codon TA + tRNA. The 22 tRNAs have a typical cloverleaf secondary structure. Phylogenetic analyses base on 13 Diptera species supported the monophyly of Superfamily Tephritoidea.

Musculature of the male genitalia in Rivellia (Diptera: Platystomatidae)

The musculature of male genitalia was studied hitherto only in two species of Tephritidae, one species of Platystomatidae, one species of Pallopteridae, and three species of Ulidiidae of the superfamily Tephritoidea. The split of the hypandrium from one structure into three (the hypandrium and two lateral sclerites) is traced. The hypandrial origin of the lateral sclerites of the hypandrial complex is shown based on the localization of muscle attachment sites. The subepandrial origin of the inner lobes of the surstyli is also confirmed.

A new species of Angelopteromyia Korneyev, 2001 (Diptera, Platystomatidae) from Iran, with the key to the species

Angelopteromyia korneyevi Mohamadzade Namin, sp. n. from Iran is described and figured. The new species is similar to other species of Angelopteromyia in having abdominal spiracles 5 of females not approximated medially, as well as clypeus extended postero-ventrally, antenna shorter than face, and R₁ and R₄₊₅ setulose on dorsal side. It differs from other species of Angelopteromyia by having mostly brown wing with 3 hyaline crossbands and a few hyaline spots, and dark brownish basal and costal cells without hyaline spots.
