Abstract
Introduction We examined the effect of 5.0 g/day of collagen peptide (CP) or collagen peptide fermented with Aspergillus sojae (FCP) on skin pigmentation in healthy participants. Methods In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 44 men and women aged 25–63 years were placed into three groups by stratified random allocation and treated with CP, FCP, or placebo (PL) at 5.0 g/day for 3 months. Their skin condition was measured monthly from baseline to 3 months of intake. Results No adverse events were identified in any group. The CP group showed a significant reduction in pigmented patches and redness after 1 and 3 months of intake, respectively. In the FCP group, pigmented macules were significantly reduced after 1 month, and pigmented patches after 2 months. Both the all-ages analysis and the hierarchical analysis below 55 years old yielded similar results. Conclusion Intake of 5.0 g/day of FCP for 3 months is safe. CP and FCP intake is useful for suppressing pigmentation. In addition, CP intake may be useful for reducing redness. These results suggest a new beneficial effect on the skin of CP supplementation. Abstract
INTRODUCTION A single-center, prospective randomized comparison of postoperative recovery between 23-gauge and 27-gauge surgical approaches in vitrectomy was performed. METHODS A single-center, prospective randomized comparison of postoperative recovery between 23-gauge and 27-gauge surgical approaches to evaluate efficiencies and postoperative outcomes of the two surgical gauges. Eighty patients who were scheduled to undergo pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for floaters or macular surgery were treated with either 27-gauge or 23-gauge techniques and assessed for efficiency of the procedures as well as a variety of postop indicators of pain and inflammation. RESULTS 27-Gauge vitrectomy took 90 s more time compared to 23-gauge surgery. Wound closure was significantly easier in 27-gauge than 23-gauge. Less postoperative eye reddishness was seen in 27-gauge compared to 23-gauge. A trend towards less inflammation was seen in 27-gauge. CONCLUSION Overall, the trial showed that 27-gauge has the better postoperative outcome compared to 23-gauge PPV. Combining vitrectomy with phaco-surgery did not influence the study outcome parameters.

Abstract
This study examined the impact of dietary supplementation of Morinda lucida leaf powder (MLLP) and Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) on carcass traits, physicochemical properties, and sensory attributes of different muscles in broiler chickens. Two hundred and forty 1-day old Arbor acre chicks were randomly allotted to either a negative control (NC), basal diet without additive; M-0.1, basal diet + 0.1%MLLP; M-0.2, basal diet + 0.2%MLLP; or Positive Control, (PC), basal diet + 0.02%BHA, fed for 42 d, and euthanized. The physicochemical properties and oxidative stability of thigh and breast muscles were assessed over a 5 d postmortem chill storage. Diet had no effect (p > 0.05) on carcass traits and chemical composition, cook loss, pH and sensory attributes of breast and thigh muscles in broiler chickens. Total phenolic content was higher (p = 0.032) in the supplemented meats than in the NC meat. Carbonyl content, TBARS value and drip loss were higher (p < 0.05), while redness was lower (p = 0.021) in the NC meat compared with the meat of the supplemented birds. Carbonyl content was lower (p < 0.0001) in the PC meat compared with the M-0.1 and M-0.2 meats. The M-0.1 and M-0.2 meats had lower (p < 0.0001) TBARS value than the PC meat. Chill storage and muscle type influenced (p < 0.05) the physicochemical properties and oxidative stability of broiler meat. There were significant interactions between diet, muscle type, and chill storage on the oxidative stability of broiler meat. These results suggest that MLLP exhibited antioxidant potential that was comparable to that of BHA in the diets of broiler chickens.

Abstract
Visual assessment is regarded as the gold standard to evaluate meat colour shelf-life, but it is costly and time consuming. To address this issue, this paper aims to evaluate the number of consumers and days of display that are necessaries in order to assess the colour shelf-life of meat, presented with different methods, all using images. Photographs of thirty-six lamb steaks were taken just after cutting (day 0) and on each of the following days until the 14th day of display under standardized conditions. Images were presented in three different manners: 1) with days of display and animals in random order (Random); 2) days of display in sequential and animals in random order (Sequential); and, 3) days of display and animals in sequential order (Animal); they were presented to 211 consumers who evaluated visual acceptability on a 9-point scale. At day zero, visual acceptability scores were the highest in Animal, followed by Sequential, and then by the Random (P < .05) method. Scores decreased over time for all methods tested (P < .05). The Random method presented the highest standard deviation; however, an increase in standard deviation among consumers along days of display was observed for all methods tested (P < .05). Shelf-life determined by regression varied according to the method of presentation (7.83, 7.00 and 7.54 days for Random, Sequential and Animal, respectively). A minimum number of 4 day points before and 4 day points after neutral scores had been reached (scores = 5.0) were necessary in order to obtain a robust model. The minimum number of required consumers (α = 0.05; d = 0.1 and β = 0.2 or 0.1) varied according to methodology: it was 81 to 109 consumers for Random, 69 to 92 for Sequential, and 55 to 74 for Animal. Our study indicates that an optimal number of days and evaluators can be calculated depending on the manner of sample presentation. These findings should be taken into account in further studies that aim to balance data reliability with the cost involved in meat colour analyses.

Abstract
The effects of dietary supplementation of different parts of Andrographis paniculata on fatty acids, lipid oxidation, microbiota and quality attributes of Longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle in goats were assessed. Twenty four, entire Boer bucks (4 months old; 20.18 ± 0.19 kg BW) were randomly allotted to either a basal diet without additive (AP0), a basal diet + 1.5% Andrographis paniculata leaves (APL) or a basal diet + 1.5% Andrographis paniculata whole plant (APW). The bucks were fed the diets for 100 d and slaughtered. The LTL muscle was subjected to a 7 d chill storage. The AP0 meat had higher (p < .05) concentration of C16:0 and C18:0 than the APW and APL meat. The concentrations of total C18:1trans, total CLA, C18:1n-9, C18:2n-6, C18:3n-3 and C20:5n-3 were higher (p < .05) in APL and APW meat than the AP0 meat. Diets had no effect (p > .05) on muscle glycogen, pH, drip loss, chemical composition and lactic acid bacteria count. Cooking loss, shear force, and TBARS values were lower (p < .05) in APL (23.98%, 0.76 kg, 0.12 mg MDA/kg) and APW (24.53%, 0.80 kg, 0.15 mg MDA/kg) meat compared with AP0 (26.49%, 1.13 kg, 0.23 mg MDA/kg) meat. Meat redness was higher (p < .05) in APL (13.49) and APW (12.98) than AP0 (10.86). Sensory scores for juiciness, tenderness, and overall acceptability of APL (7.92, 7.88, 7.89) and APW (7.90, 7.08, 7.77) meat were higher (p < .05) than that of the AP0 (5.38, 5.95, 5.41) meat. Total viable counts and populations of Pseudomonas spp, Escherichia coli and Enterobacteriacea were higher (p < .05) in AP0 meat than in APL and APW meat. The APL exhibited higher (p < .05) antimicrobial potential than the APW. Chill storage affected (p < .05) the physicochemical properties, lipid oxidation and microbial counts in chevon. Dietary APL and APW enhanced the beneficial fatty acids, quality attributes and oxidative stability, and reduced microbial counts in chevon.

Abstract
The colour of bloomed m. longissimus was measured 24h post slaughter for 8165 lamb carcasses produced over 5years across 8 sites in Australia. Intramuscular fat across a 2 to 8% range and shortloin fat weight were positively associated with meat lightness (L*), redness (a*), yellowness (b*), hue and chroma (P<0.01). Shortloin muscle weight was negatively associated with these meat colour parameters (P<0.01), although this was largely accounted for by correlated changes in intramuscular fat (P<0.01). The effect of sire breeding values for lamb weight, shortloin muscle depth and fat depth on loin L*, a*, b*, hue and chroma were small and varied between lambs of different sire type, dam breed and sex. Thus selection for lean meat yield will have neutral or positive effects on meat colour, while selection for increased intramuscular fat will make the bloomed colour of lamb meat lighter and redder.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The central diagnostic feature of rosacea is diffuse central-facial erythema. The objective was to summarize published and unpublished health-related quality of life (HRQoL) data from seven previous studies in rosacea patients. METHODS A meta-analysis was performed on baseline HRQoL data of subjects with erythema of rosacea from five randomized controlled trials, one open-label safety study and one epidemiological study. The data from four questionnaires were analyzed, including the Euro QoL 5-dimension (EQ5D) generic questionnaire, the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) dermatology-specific quality of life instrument, the Productivity and Social Life Questionnaire and the Facial Redness Questionnaire. RESULTS The global EQ5D index score was 0.859 and the domains of pain/discomfort (31.5% moderate or extreme pain) and anxiety/depression (26.4% moderate or extreme) were most affected. Worse scores were observed with erythema of rosacea in the absence of inflammatory lesions (EQ5D score of 0.832 for no lesions vs 0.919 for subjects with ≥1 lesion). Almost half (43%) the subjects had at least moderately impaired HRQoL, including 19.8% with a DLQI total score of ≥11 indicating severely impaired HRQoL; symptoms/feelings was the most affected domain. Subjects with a patient self-assessment (PSA) of severe erythema of rosacea had a worse mean DLQI score than moderate PSA subjects (8.6 vs 6.0). Work life and social life were affected, especially in subjects with severe PSA (62% with social life at least somewhat affected). CONCLUSION Erythema of rosacea causes a marked decrease in HRQoL in most patients, especially those with self-perceived severe erythema and without inflammatory lesions, and should thus be considered as an important medical problem requiring medical intervention. Abstract
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that commonly presents with persistent facial erythema with or without the coincident presence of flushing, telangiectasias, inflammatory papules or pustules, phymatous changes, or ocular involvement. Patients often present with a constellation of various signs and symptoms of the disease, and an individualized treatment plan should be tailored to a patient's unique clinical presentation. Previously available medications for rosacea have all targeted the inflammatory erythematous papules and pustules frequently associated with the disease, leaving a therapeutic gap for the common manifestation of persistent facial erythema. Brimonidine tartrate 0.33% gel was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in August 2013 as the first medication available for the topical treatment of persistent facial erythema associated with rosacea. Brimonidine gel is a highly selective α2-adrenergic receptor agonist with potent vasoconstrictive effects, which leads to significant reduction of persistent facial erythema in the majority of patients when applied once daily. Based on large-scale clinical trials and post-marketing reports, brimonidine gel has maintained a good safety profile with a minority of patients experiencing adverse effects from its use, most of which are cutaneous in nature, mild-to-moderate in degree, occur early after initiation of treatment, often resolve spontaneously with continued use, and generally resolve after discontinuation of use. Among the reported adverse effects, two distinct manifestations of worsened erythema have been described. Brimonidine gel can be integrated into a treatment regimen along with concomitant therapies for facial papules and pustules with no increased risk of adverse events with combination therapy. Education about optimal application methods, setting reasonable expectations for treatment, and minimizing inflammation are important factors for the successful use of brimonidine gel as part of a patient's overall rosacea treatment regimen.
