Analysis of Albania's diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union during the years 1948-1959

Background

This paper aims to shed light on a very intense period of relations between Albania and the Soviet Union (USSR), focusing on the period from 1948 with the intensification of Albania's relations with the USSR until the termination of diplomatic relations in 1959. The paper will overview the USSR's relationship with Albania and its behaviour.

Methods

The paper analyses a specific period between 1948 and 1959 as a case study. The analysis is conducted on context, actors, and outcomes. The research aims to identify key indicators and the implications of the relationship in both domestic and international contexts. The data sources include various materials such as interviews, films, newspapers, and books. The researchers have requested permission to use the Archival resources of the Albanian Central State Archives (AQSH), where they have made some non-state secret resources accessible. However, some of these resources can only be accessed within the archive, but the researchers have been permitted to use them.

Findings

The facts show that the relations between Albania and the USSR benefitted Albania more. particularly with economic support from the USSR, which helped Albania emerge from the crisis and build the so-called 'socialist state.' Albania took its place in the international arena through these relations and contributions.

Conclusions

The study, regardless of the issues it addresses, does not aim to exhaust the paper's topic but to contribute to the objective analysis and to have some impact on the continuation and deepening of the treatment of this topic. Albania's relations with the Soviet Union are still not fully revealed as long as many documents found in Russian archives are not available for study. But further, numerous documents show that this could be the 'best cover' to safeguard the interests and personal power of the leadership.

Anticipatory Grief in Dementia: An Ethnographic Study of Loss and Connection

In this article, I address the experiences of family members of people with dementia, as they expressed the sensation of gradually losing the person with dementia. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in nursing homes in the Netherlands, and contributing to the anthropology of grief, I explore the co-existence of experiences of anticipatory grief and manifestations of care to maintain meaningful relations. I show how my interlocutors adapted to changing circumstances as the disease progressed, and in so doing found new ways to relate, as well as prepared for future losses and the expected end of life. I argue that anticipatory grief is temporal and relational, encompassing both present and future losses, and involving a continuous negotiation between the loss and the continuing relationship. I underscore the entanglement of loss and connection, showing how both exist parallel to, and may emerge from one another, and demonstrating how an anthropological approach to anticipatory grief can reveal the nuanced and equivocal character of experiences of illness and at the end of life.

Two Computational Approaches to Visual Analogy: Task-Specific Models Versus Domain-General Mapping

Advances in artificial intelligence have raised a basic question about human intelligence: Is human reasoning best emulated by applying task-specific knowledge acquired from a wealth of prior experience, or is it based on the domain-general manipulation and comparison of mental representations? We address this question for the case of visual analogical reasoning. Using realistic images of familiar three-dimensional objects (cars and their parts), we systematically manipulated viewpoints, part relations, and entity properties in visual analogy problems. We compared human performance to that of two recent deep learning models (Siamese Network and Relation Network) that were directly trained to solve these problems and to apply their task-specific knowledge to analogical reasoning. We also developed a new model using part-based comparison (PCM) by applying a domain-general mapping procedure to learned representations of cars and their component parts. Across four-term analogies (Experiment 1) and open-ended analogies (Experiment 2), the domain-general PCM model, but not the task-specific deep learning models, generated performance similar in key aspects to that of human reasoners. These findings provide evidence that human-like analogical reasoning is unlikely to be achieved by applying deep learning with big data to a specific type of analogy problem. Rather, humans do (and machines might) achieve analogical reasoning by learning representations that encode structural information useful for multiple tasks, coupled with efficient computation of relational similarity.

Lifeworld perspectives of people with dementia: a meta-aggregation of qualitative studies

OBJECTIVES

This meta-aggregation aims to interpret and synthesize present knowledge on the lifeworld perspectives of people with dementia and develop a model for guidance in clinical practice.

METHOD

The data consist of four meta-syntheses describing different lifeworld perspectives in accordance with van Manen's existentials: lived relations, lived space, lived time and lived body. The meta-aggregation summarizes a range of views expressed by people with dementia in qualitative, interview-based studies, with the aim of generating a reliable model based on the studies' findings.

RESULTS

In total, 88 studies among 1,191 persons with dementia were included. Sixteen areas of focus were found, representing four perspectives: (a) lived relations, consisting of connectedness, independence, equality and competence; (b) lived space, consisting of belonging, meaningfulness, safety and security, and autonomy; (c) lived time, consisting of being rooted in the past, being in the present, viewing the future and being in process; and (d) lived body, consisting of being functional, trustworthy, adaptable and presentable. A model shaped as a tree trunk captures the lifeworld perspectives of people with dementia.

CONCLUSION

Sixteen areas were revealed from this meta-aggregation and form the basis of a model. This model may be used as a guide for health care personnel to ensure the overall lifeworld-perspectives of people with dementia in care for the target group and conduct lifeworld-preserving care with a person-centred approach.

Associations between smoking status and involvement of personal and professional relations among individuals reporting symptoms related to a diagnosis of lung cancer: a population-based study

BACKGROUND

Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, but individuals who currently smoke seek healthcare less frequently. This study of individuals reporting symptoms related to diagnosis of lung cancer has the following aims: 1) to explore the involvement of personal and professional relations; 2) to analyse whether age, sex and smoking status are associated with involving personal and professional relations; and 3) to analyse whether involving a personal relation is associated with healthcare-seeking.

METHODS

Data was extracted from a Danish population-based survey from 2012 with 100,000 randomly selected invitees 20 years or older. We describe the involvement of personal and professional relations among individuals experiencing four predefined symptoms indicative of lung cancer: prolonged coughing, prolonged hoarseness, shortness of breath and haemoptysis, either alone or in combination. Using multivariate logistic regression, we analyse the associations between involving personal or professional relations and various covariates (sex, age, smoking status). Moreover, we analyse the association between involving a personal relation and healthcare-seeking.

RESULTS

A total of 35,958 individuals over 40 years old completed the questionnaire. Of these, 5,869 individuals reported at least one lung cancer symptom. A higher percentage of participants with prolonged hoarseness and prolonged coughing reported no involvement of personal and professional relations (27.6% and 22.7%, respectively) compared to shortness of breath (12.4%). The most involved personal and professional relations were the spouse (46.2-62.5%) and the general practitioner (GP) (31.3-54.5%), respectively. Women and individuals in the oldest age group had higher odds of involving personal and professional relations. Individuals who currently smoke involved all relations less frequently than individuals who formerly,- and never smoked. Odds of contacting the GP or another doctor were three to seven-fold higher when a personal relation was also involved.

CONCLUSION

Women and the oldest age group had higher odds of involving relations, whereas individuals who currently smoked tended to be less likely to contact any personal or professional relations. Involving a personal relation was associated with higher odds of healthcare-seeking. The findings could be useful for GPs in terms of identifying patients at risk of postponing relevant healthcare-seeking with potential lung cancer symptoms.

Two sides of the same coin? Exploring the relation between safety and security in high-risk organizations

INTRODUCTION

While safety in high-risk organizations has been high on the agenda for multiple decades, these organizations are now increasingly concerned about security threats. In light of this, academics and institutions have set forth the vision of a synergistic integration of safety and security, warranted by their common goal to protect people and the environment. However, it is not always clear how this vision should be enacted on the work floor. While safety and security policies share some elements, recent studies point out that their practical enactments may diverge and lead to potential tensions.

METHODS

Using an empirically grounded inquiry within a nuclear research center, this paper analyzes how safety and security practices interact. Our analysis reveals that, while they contain similar management frameworks and practical means, safety and security interactions are also characterized by various tensions. Mobilizing paradox theory, we highlight how these tensions are (to a large extent) rooted in three underlying paradoxes: distrust vs trust; transparency vs confidentiality; and movement enablement vs movement restriction.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

We discuss the practical implications of these findings and, based on these, we argue that an integrated approach to safety and security should, rather than sideline tensions, promote the creation of 'tension venues.' Such tension venues offer spaces for reflection, and as such would enable the co-creation of innovative measures to articulate safety and security.

"From hell to healed" - A qualitative study on women's experience of recovery, relationships and sexuality after severe obstetric perineal injury

OBJECTIVE

Few studies have investigated women's experiences of daily life after childbirth complicated by obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI). The aim of the present study was to explore experiences related to recovery, sexual function, relationships and coping strategies among women affected by OASI.

METHODS

In-depth interviews were conducted using a purposive sample of 11 women affected by OASI. Women were interviewed 1-2 years after their first childbirth. Inductive qualitative content analysis was applied.

RESULTS

The theme "From hell to healed" illustrates women's experiences of recovery, relationships and sexual function after OASI. Three categories addressing women's perceptions emerged: "Challenged to the core", "At the mercy of the care provider" and "For better or for worse". Support from partners and family and comprehensive care were important elements for the experiences of coping and healing from OASI. Elements that negatively influenced women's experiences were the pain and physical symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, normalization of symptoms by heath care providers, and unrealistic expectations about how this period in life should be experienced.

CONCLUSION

OASI greatly affects women's experiences of their first years with their newborn child, relationships, social context and sexuality. For some women, OASI negatively affects everyday life for a long period after childbirth. However, others heal and cope quite quickly. Health care professionals need to identify and pay attention to women with persisting problems after OASI so that they can be directed to the right level of care.

Qualitative properties and relations

This paper is concerned with two concepts of qualitativeness that apply to intensional entities (i.e., properties, relations, and states of affairs). I propose an account of pure qualitativeness that largely follows the traditional understanding established by Carnap, and try to shed light on its ontological presuppositions. On this account, an intensional entity is purely qualitative iff it does not 'involve' any particular (i.e., anything that is not an intensional entity). An alternative notion of qualitativeness-which I propose to refer to as a concept of strict qualitativeness-has recently been introduced by Chad Carmichael. However, Carmichael's definition presupposes a highly fine-grained conception of properties and relations. To eliminate this presupposition, I tentatively suggest a different definition that rests on a concept of perspicuous denotation. In the penultimate section, both concepts of qualitativeness are put to work in distinguishing between different 'grades' of qualitative discriminability.

Maneuvering in the Interval: Reflections on Immanent Entanglements

Both perspective and leverage are needed in order to arrive at a place where it is possible to do the philosophical work required in order to adequately account for our present sociotechnical landscape. One of the key characteristics of this landscape is the collapse of scale, as things become more like fluid assemblages and the economic incentives of surveillance capitalism turn ordinary things into surveillance devices tuned for others' profit. In this context we need a language not only of imagination and humility in the face of countless gaps between things, but also one of entanglement, care, and response-ability.

'They just came with the medication dispenser'- a qualitative study of elderly service users' involvement and welfare technology in public home care services

BACKGROUND

Public home care for the elderly is a key area in relation to improving health care quality. It is an important political goal to increase elderly people's involvement in their care and in the use of welfare technology. The aim of this study was to explore elderly service users' experience of user involvement in the implementation and everyday use of welfare technology in public home care services.

METHOD

This qualitative study has an explorative and descriptive design. Sixteen interviews of service users were conducted in five different municipalities over a period of six months. The data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Service users receiving public home care service are not a homogenous group, and the participants had different wishes and needs as regards user involvement and the use of welfare technology. The analysis led to four main themes: 1) diverse preferences as regards user involvement, 2) individual differences as regards information, knowledge and training, 3) feeling safe and getting help, and 4) a wish to stay at home for as long as possible.

CONCLUSION

The results indicated that user involvement was only to a limited extent an integral part of public home care services. Participants had varying insight into and interest in welfare technology, which was a challenge for user involvement. User involvement must be facilitated and implemented in a gentle way, highlighting autonomy and collaboration, and with the focus on respect, reciprocity and dialogue.

Psychometric evaluation of a revised Family Collaboration Scale

Measuring family caregivers' experiences of collaboration with nurses is important in the context of health care reforms that advocate an increased role of families in care. The Family Collaboration Scale (FCS) measures collaboration between nurses and family caregivers, however, the scale has a broad scope. Thus, the aim of this study was to construct a measure that is focused on collaboration only. After revision, a 25-item version of the FCS was sent to 777 family caregivers of hospitalized patients (≥70 years). Psychometric evaluation was employed by the Non-Parametric Item Response Theory to evaluate how items of the revised FCS behave. In total, 302 (39%) family caregivers were found eligible, mean (SD) age 65 (13) and 71% female. A 20-item FCS is proposed showing good psychometric properties. This study contributes to the limited knowledge of measuring collaboration between family caregivers and nurses.

The Dyad as a Centerless Structure: a Philosophical, Sociological and Psychoanalytic Study

This paper attempts to elucidate the phenomenological experience produced in the dyad from a structural perspective. It proposes to regard the dyadic configuration as a "centerless structure", containing the highest potential for actualization as "free play", both in a negative sense and a positive one. In the first part of the paper, the author uses Wittgenstein's "family- resemblances" method, to illustrate how the descriptions given to diverse dyadic relations in different domains and disciplines, share similarities and closeness with two main types of dyadic relations: a "synonymy relation" based on a common sense of similarity and likeness and an "antonymy relation" characterized by dominant and complementary relations. Although the two types of relations reflect through additional social forms, the author proposes that what is unique to the dyad structure is the repetitive movement that takes place, back and forth, between them. It indicates a lack of structural function that can organize, regulate and balance the intersubjective space. In the second part of the paper, inspired by Derrida and Simmel (Derrida, 1966; Simmel, 1950), the author suggests that the dyadic configuration struggles to produce a structured, stable center of meaning, and therefore it encourages the structure's free play potential.

Bringing urban governance back in: Neighborhood conflicts and depression

Urban governance and its impact on contentious politics have received remarkably little attention in existing studies on mental health. Drawing on a measure of neighborhood conflicts developed in a survey of thirty-nine urban neighborhoods in Guangzhou, China, this article investigates the potential link between urban governance and mental health. Net of sociodemographic, relational, and environmental measures, it finds that among residents' conflicts with different entities of urban governance, only those with local/grassroots governments are significantly associated with more depressive symptoms. Moreover, these subgroups of government-oriented conflicts associated with more depressive symptoms are related to neighborhood planning and communal properties, reflecting a dilemma in the Chinese model of urban governance. By offering a relational interpretation of neighborhood conflicts, this study not only challenges the previous view that community building in China improves mental health, but calls attention to the significance of urban governance in research on mental health.

Visual routines are associated with specific graph interpretations

We argue that people compare values in graphs with a visual routine – attending to data values in an ordered pattern over time. Do these visual routines exist to manage capacity limitations in how many values can be encoded at once, or do they actually affect the relations that are extracted? We measured eye movements while people judged configurations of a two-bar graph based on size only (“[short tall] or [tall short]?”) and contrast only (“[light dark] or [dark light]?”). Participants exhibited visual routines in which they systematically attended to a specific feature (or “anchor point”) in the graph; in the size task, most participants inspected the taller bar first, and in the contrast task, most participants attended to the darker bar first. Participants then judged configurations that varied in both size and contrast (e.g., [short-light tall-dark]); however, only one dimension was task-relevant (varied between subjects). During this orthogonal task, participants overwhelmingly relied on the same anchor point used in the single-dimension version, but only for the task-relevant dimension (e.g., taller bar for the size-relevant task). These results suggest that visual routines are associated with specific graph interpretations. Responses were also faster when task-relevant and task-irrelevant anchor points appeared on the same object (congruent) than on different objects (incongruent). This interference from the task-irrelevant dimension suggests that top-down control may be necessary to extract relevant relations from graphs. The effect of visual routines on graph comprehension has implications for both science, technology, engineering, and mathematics pedagogy and graph design.

Unravelling networks in local public health policymaking in three European countries - a systems analysis

BACKGROUND

Facilitating and enhancing interaction between stakeholders involved in the policymaking process to stimulate collaboration and use of evidence, is important to foster the development of effective Health Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) policies. Performing an analysis of real-world policymaking processes will help reveal the complexity of a network of stakeholders. Therefore, the main objectives were to unravel the stakeholder network in the policy process by conducting three systems analyses, and to increase insight into the similarities and differences in the policy processes of these European country cases.

METHODS

A systems analysis of the local HEPA policymaking process was performed in three European countries involved in the 'REsearch into POlicy to enhance Physical Activity' (REPOPA) project, resulting in three schematic models showing the main stakeholders and their relationships. The models were used to compare the systems, focusing on implications with respect to collaboration and use of evidence in local HEPA policymaking. Policy documents and relevant webpages were examined and main stakeholders were interviewed.

RESULTS

The systems analysis in each country identified the main stakeholders involved and their position and relations in the policymaking process. The Netherlands and Denmark were the most similar and both differed most from Romania, especially at the level of accountability of the local public authorities for local HEPA policymaking. The categories of driving forces underlying the relations between stakeholders were formal relations, informal interaction and knowledge exchange.

CONCLUSIONS

A systems analysis providing detailed descriptions of positions and relations in the stakeholder network in local level HEPA policymaking is rather unique in this area. The analyses are useful when a need arises for increased interaction, collaboration and use of knowledge between stakeholders in the local HEPA network, as they provide an overview of the stakeholders involved and their mutual relations. This information can be an important starting point to enhance the uptake of evidence and build more effective public health policies.

An anatomical study of the intersigmoid fossa and applications for internal hernia surgery

PURPOSE

To improve the knowledge of the morphometry and the surrounding anatomical structures of the intersigmoid fossa and to determine possible surgical applications.

METHOD

Forty eight adult cadavers (29 female and 19 male; mean age 83 years) underwent dissection in the Laboratoire d'Anatomie des Alpes Francaises. Two injections in the right carotid resulted in a total body concentration of formalin of 1.3 %. The study parameters were the dimensions of the intersigmoid fossa orifice and the fossa's relationship to surrounding structures. Data were recorded and analyzed using Microsoft Office Excel (MS Cerp). A Pearson coefficient r was used to examine the correlation between the length of colon and the ISF volume.

RESULTS

The intersigmoid fossa was present in 75 % of cases (n = 36). The average dimensions for the transverse diameter, longitudinal diameter, and the depth were, respectively, 20.5 ± 0.2, 20.3 ± 0.13, and 26.8 ± 0.2 mm. The primary and secondary roots bordering this fossa measured on average 59.1 ± 0.1 and 48.3 ± 0.13 mm. In 13.9 % of cases (n = 5), the maximum depth was >40 mm and in 16.7 % of cases (n = 6), one of the diameters of the orifice entry of the fossa was >40 mm. The ureter and external iliac artery were the most frequently encountered structures during the dissection of the fundus of the intersigmoid fossa.

CONCLUSION

The intersigmoid fossa remains present in most of the reported dissections of cadavers. It constitutes an essential landmark in the surgery of the sigmoid colon due to its deep structural relationship with the left ureter and external iliac artery.

Visual routines for extracting magnitude relations

Linking relations described in text with relations in visualizations is often difficult. We used eye tracking to measure the optimal way to extract such relations in graphs, college students, and young children (6- and 8-year-olds). Participants compared relational statements ("Are there more blueberries than oranges?") with simple graphs, and two systematic patterns emerged: eye movements that followed the verbal order of the question (inspecting the "blueberry" value first) versus those that followed a left-first bias (regardless of the left value's identity). Question-order patterns led substantially to faster responses and increased in prevalence with age, whereas the left-first pattern led to far slower responses and was the dominant strategy for younger children. We argue that the optimal way to verify a verbally expressed relation's consistency with visualization is for the eyes to mimic the verbal ordering but that this strategy requires executive control and coordination with language.

Explanation in personality psychology: "Verbal magic" and the five-factor model

Scientific psychology involves both identifying and classifying phenomena of interest (description) and revealing the causes and mechanisms that contribute towards these phenomena arising (explanation). Within personality psychology, some propose that aspects of behavior and cognition can be explained with reference to personality traits. However, certain conceptual and logical issues cast doubt upon the adequacy of traits as coherent explanatory constructs. This paper discusses “explanation” in psychology and the problems of circularity and reification. An analysis of relations and intrinsic properties is then developed to address the logical requirements necessary for circumventing these problems. An examination of McCrae and Costa's defense of traits as explanatory constructs, in terms of “tendencies” and “dispositions” highlights logical issues that prevent traits, so defined, from explaining trait-like behaviors and cognitions. The logical requirements for a coherent trait-explanatory account are outlined and possible explanatory directions in trait-approaches are discussed. The ongoing tendency towards fallacious reasoning in psychology and suggestions for preventing this are further examined.
