Climate warming worsens thermal resource utilization for practical rice cultivation in China

Rice production is sensitive to climate change and significantly affected by warming in recent years. To what extent climate warming shifted rice phenology and varied thermal resource condition were explored across five agro-ecological zones in China, based on up-to-date observations of meteorology and rice cultivation in 1981-2020. It was clearly signaled that there was a general advance of 0.3-3.8 days in observed sowing date and a delay of 0.4-3.5 days in observed maturity date in 2001-2020 relative to 1981-2000 in major zones. A vacant time slice of 2.6-28.8 days between observed sowing date and potential sowing date, and a lag of 15.4-56.7 days in potential maturity date compared to observed maturity date were identified in 2001-2020. Within longer growing season, useful accumulated temperature increased by 76.7-117.6 °C·d in 2001-2020 relative to 1981-2000, while disactive accumulated temperature also increased. In Northeast China, actual rice cultivation was undergoing earlier sowing date than potential sowing date and longer growing duration than potential duration, yet leading to upward disactive accumulated temperature. The decrease in the thermal resource utilization in 2001-2020 relative to 1981-2000 was highlighted at 55.3-78.3% stations in major zones, with a decrement of 0.006-0.018 in average magnitude. The changes in thermal resource utilization unveiled that the shifts in actual rice cultivation still could not compensate for the suitability in thermal resource utilization benefited from climate warming.

Projecting the impact of climate change and elevated CO2 concentration on rice irrigation water requirement in China

Climate change and elevated CO2 concentrations significantly affect rice growth and water consumption. Understanding the specific impacts of climate change and elevated CO2 concentrations on rice physiological phenology, crop water demand (ETC), and irrigation water requirement (IR) is of great significance for the sustainable utilization of water resources and food security. This is particularly true in China, the world's largest rice producer. In this study, with the help of two rice phenological models, the modified Penman-Monteith equation, and the paddy water balance model, we project the changes in rice phenological period, ETC, and IR in four main rice-producing regions of China in the period 2015-2100 based on the 11 GCM outputs. The results show that the rice growing period is shortened in most rice-producing regions, except for the parts of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Meanwhile, the trend of ETC and IR of rice varies slightly among regions in the future scenario, with almost all regions decreasing yearly except for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, where the trend is increasing. The progressively increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration has a "fertilization effect" on the crop, which can reduce the water requirements of rice. In the SSP585 scenario, the " CO2 fertilization effect" can reduce up to 8.87 × 108 m3 of ETC and 6.94 × 108 m3 of IR in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in the period of 2090s. This study provides beneficial references to understand the response of rice ETC and IR to future climate change and CO2 concentration elevation in China and highlights that the simulation in terms of crop irrigation must account for the "CO2 fertilization effect".

Remote estimation of leaf area index (LAI) with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imaging for different rice cultivars throughout the entire growing season

BACKGROUND

Rice is one of the most important grain crops worldwide. The accurate and dynamic monitoring of Leaf Area Index (LAI) provides important information to evaluate rice growth and production.

METHODS

This study explores a simple method to remotely estimate LAI with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imaging for a variety of rice cultivars throughout the entire growing season. Forty eight different rice cultivars were planted in the study site and field campaigns were conducted once a week. For each campaign, several widely used vegetation indices (VI) were calculated from canopy reflectance obtained by 12-band UAV images, canopy height was derived from UAV RGB images and LAI was destructively measured by plant sampling.

RESULTS

The results showed the correlation of VI and LAI in rice throughout the entire growing season was weak, and for all tested indices there existed significant hysteresis of VI vs. LAI relationship between rice pre-heading and post-heading stages. The model based on the product of VI and canopy height could reduce such hysteresis and estimate rice LAI of the whole season with estimation errors under 24%, not requiring algorithm re-parameterization for different phenology stages.

CONCLUSIONS

The progressing phenology can affect VI vs. LAI relationship in crops, especially for rice having quite different canopy spectra and structure after its panicle exsertion. Thus the models solely using VI to estimate rice LAI are phenology-specific and have high uncertainties for post-heading stages. The model developed in this study combines both remotely sensed canopy height and VI information, considerably improving rice LAI estimation at both pre- and post-heading stages. This method can be easily and efficiently implemented in UAV platforms for various rice cultivars during the entire growing season with no rice phenology and cultivar pre-knowledge, which has great potential for assisting rice breeding and field management studies at a large scale.

Appraising drought hazard during Boro rice growing period in western Bangladesh

Drought is one of the critical agro-meteorological hazards in the world including Bangladesh. Rice is the major food grain in Bangladesh, and drought has threatened the food grain and the country's food security. However, drought hazard (DH) in the Boro rice growing period and their associations are less investigated in Bangladesh. Hence, we intend to appraise the DH in the vegetative, reproductive, and ripening phases and the whole growing season based on the daily temperature, precipitation data, and yearly rice phenology dataset from 8 meteorological stations in western Bangladesh from 1980 to 2013. The Mann-Kendall (M-K) test was employed to identify the trend in phenology dates and drought hazard. The standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) was adopted to compute the DH. The results show that moderate to severe drought events occurred in western Bangladesh during Boro rice growing period. The transplanting dates were delayed in the southwestern part by a rate of 1.31 day/year along with a trend towards a shorter and more humid ripening phase (p < 0.05). By contrast, transplanting dates were started earlier in the northwestern part with a rate of - 0.48 day/year along with the enhanced length of the reproductive and the ripening phases (p < 0.10). We appraised the DH during each Boro rice growing season, where the ripening phase faced a more severe DH than other phases that were most susceptible to water stress conditions. There was a strong association between DH and crop yield loss during the whole growth period in the study area.
