Organometallic Molecular Wires with Thioacetylene Backbones, trans-{RS-(C≡C)n }2 Ru(phosphine)4 : High Conductance through Non-Aromatic Bridging Linkers

In this work, the design, synthesis, and single-molecule conductance of ethynyl- and butadiynyl-ruthenium molecular wires with thioether anchor groups [RS=n-C₆ H₁₃ S, p-tert-Bu-C₆ H₄ S), trans-{RS-(C≡C)_n }₂ Ru(dppe)₂ (n=1 (1^R ), 2 (2^R ); dppe: 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) and trans-(n-C₆ H₁₃ S-C≡C)₂ Ru{P(OMe)₃ }₄ 3^hex ] are reported. Scanning tunneling microscope break-junction study has revealed conductance of the organometallic molecular wires with the thioacetylene backbones higher than that of the related organometallic wires having arylethynylruthenium linkages with the sulfur anchor groups, trans-{p-MeS-C₆ H₄ -(C≡C)_n }₂ Ru(phosphine)₄ 4ⁿ (n=1, 2) and trans-(Th-C≡C)₂ Ru(phosphine)₄ 5 (Th=3-thienyl). It should be noted that the molecular junctions constructed from the butadiynyl wire 2^R , trans-{Au-RS-(C≡C)₂ }₂ Ru(dppe)₂ (Au: gold metal electrode), show conductance comparable to that of the covalently linked polyynyl wire with the similar molecular length, trans-{Au-(C≡C)₃ }₂ Ru(dppe)₂ 6³ . The DFT non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) study supports the highly conducting nature of the thioacetylene molecular wires through HOMO orbitals.

Selective Fabrication of Single-Molecule Junctions by Interface Engineering

Recent progress in addressing electrically driven single-molecule behaviors has opened up a path toward the controllable fabrication of molecular devices. Herein, the selective fabrication of single-molecule junctions is achieved by employing the external electric field. For molecular junctions with methylthio (-SMe), thioacetate (-SAc), amine (-NH₂ ), and pyridyl (-PY), the evolution of their formation probabilities along with the electric field is extracted from the plateau analysis of individual single-molecule break junction traces. With the increase of the electric field, the SMe-anchored molecules show a different trend in the formation probability compared to the other molecular junctions, which is consistent with the density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, switching from an SMe-anchored junction to an SAc-anchored junction is realized by altering the electric field in a mixed solution. The results in this work provide a new approach to the controllable fabrication and modulation of single-molecule junctions and other bottom-up nanodevices at molecular scales.

Synthesis and Single-Molecule Conductance Study of Redox-Active Ruthenium Complexes with Pyridyl and Dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene Anchoring Groups

The ancillary ligands 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and 4'-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene)-2,2'-6',2"-terpyridine were used to synthesize two series of mono- and dinuclear ruthenium complexes differing in their lengths and anchoring groups. The electrochemical and single-molecular conductance properties of these two series of ruthenium complexes were studied experimentally by means of cyclic voltammetry and the scanning tunneling microscopy-break junction technique (STM-BJ) and theoretically by means of density functional theory (DFT). Cyclic voltammetry data showed clear redox peaks corresponding to both the metal- and ligand-related redox reactions. Single-molecular conductance demonstrated an exponential decay of the molecular conductance with the increase in molecular length for both the series of ruthenium complexes, with decay constants of βPY =2.07±0.1 nm(-1) and βBT =2.16±0.1 nm(-1) , respectively. The contact resistance of complexes with 2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene (BT) anchoring groups is found to be smaller than the contact resistance of ruthenium complexes with pyridine (PY) anchors. DFT calculations support the experimental results and provided additional information on the electronic structure and charge transport properties in those metal|ruthenium complex|metal junctions.
