Effects of acute lower limb and trunk fatigue on balance, performance, and skin temperature in healthy males

OBJECTIVE

It is unclear whether lower limb and trunk fatigue leads to different effects. Although some studies have compared the effects of muscle fatigue on balance and performance in healthy individuals, little is known about its effects on skin temperature. This study aimed to compare the effects of lower limb and trunk fatigue on balance, performance, and skin temperature in healthy males.

METHODS

Twenty participants performed trunk and lower limb fatigue protocols on two separate days. Balance (Y-Balance Test-YBT), trunk performance (plank test), lower limb performance (Single-Leg Triple Hop-SLTH and Countermovement jump-CMJ), and skin temperature were assessed pre-fatigue and post-fatigue. Infrared Thermography assessed the skin temperatures of the trunk and lower limb.

RESULTS

Compared with trunk fatigue, the lower limb fatigue protocol had a more significant adverse effect on reducing YBT score, CMJ parameters, and SLHT distance (p<0.05). Both fatigue protocols resulted in lower plank test times and trunk skin temperature (p<0.05). The changes in plank times and skin temperature were similar between protocols (p>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Taken together, these results suggest that lower limb fatigue adversely affected balance and lower limb performance more than trunk fatigue. Trunk performance and trunk skin temperatures decreased after both fatigue protocols. Lower limb and trunk fatigue-induced changes in trunk performance and skin temperatures were similar.

Effects of photobiomodulation on different application points and different phases of complex regional pain syndrome type I in the experimental model

Background

Complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS-I) consists of disorders caused by spontaneous pain or induced by some stimulus. The objective was to verify the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) using 830 nm wavelength light at the affected paw and involved spinal cord segments during the warm or acute phase.

Methods

Fifty-six mice were randomized into seven groups. Group (G) 1 was the placebo group; G2 and G3 were treated with PBM on the paw in the warm and acute phase, respectively; G4 and G5 treated with PBM on involved spinal cord segments in the warm and acute phase, respectively; G6 and G7 treated with PBM on paw and involved spinal cord segments in the warm and acute phase, respectively. Edema degree, thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia, skin temperature, and functional quality of gait (Sciatic Static Index [SSI] and Sciatic Functional Index [SFI]) were evaluated.

Results

Edema was lower in G3 and G7, and these were the only groups to return to baseline values at the end of treatment. For thermal hyperalgesia only G3 and G5 returned to baseline values. Regarding mechanical hyperalgesia, the groups did not show significant differences. Thermography showed increased temperature in all groups on the seventh day. In SSI and SFI assessment, G3 and G7 showed lower values when compared to G1, respectively.

Conclusions

PBM irradiation in the acute phase and in the affected paw showed better results in reducing edema, thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia, and in improving gait quality, demonstrating efficacy in treatment of CRPS-I symptoms.

Investigation of Localized Skin Temperature Distribution Across the Transtibial Residual Limb

BACKGROUND

Interventions to resolve thermal discomfort as a common complaint in amputees are usually chosen based on the residual limb skin temperature while wearing prosthesis; whereas, less attention has been paid to residual limb skin temperature while outside of the prosthesis. The objective of this study was to explore the localized and regional skin temperature over the transtibial residual limb (TRL) while outside of the prosthesis.

METHODOLOGY

Eight unilateral transtibial adults with traumatic amputation were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Participants sat to remove their prostheses and rested for 30 minutes. Twelve sites were marked circumferentially in four columns (anterolateral, anteromedial, posteromedial, and posterolateral) and longitudinally in three rows (proximal, middle, and distal) over the residual limb and used for attachment of analog thermistors. Skin temperature was recorded and compared for 11 minutes. Furthermore, the relationship of skin temperature with participants' demographic and clinical characteristics was explored.

FINDINGS

The whole temperature of the TRL was 27.73 (SD=0.83)°C. There was a significant difference in skin temperature between anterior and posterior columns. Likewise, the distal row was significantly different from the proximal and middle rows. The mean temperature at the middle and distal zones of the anteromedial column had the highest and lowest skin temperatures (29.8 and 26.3°C, p<0.05), respectively. The mean temperature of the whole TRL had no significant relationships (p>0.05) with participants' demographic and clinical characteristics.

CONCLUSIONS

An unequal distribution of temperature over the TRL was found with significantly higher and lower temperatures at its anterior column and distal row, respectively. This temperature pattern should be considered for thermoregulation strategies. Further investigation of the residual limb temperature with and without prosthesis, while considering muscles thickness and blood perfusion rate is warranted.

Regional Skin Temperature Response to Moderate Aerobic Exercise Measured by Infrared Thermography

Background:

Infrared thermography (IRT) does not require contact with the skin, and it is a convenient, reliable and non-invasive technique that can be used for monitoring the skin temperature (T_SK).

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to monitor the variations in the regional T_SK during exercise on 28 regions of interest (ROIs) (forehead, face, chest, abdomen, back, lumbar, anterior and posterior neck, and posterior and anterior views of the right and left hands, forearms, upper arms, thighs, and legs) with IRT.

Patients and Methods:

12 physically active young males were monitored with IRT during the following three phases: a) 30 minutes before exercise b) while performing one hour of moderate intensity exercise on a treadmill at 60% of the VO_2max, and c) 60 minutes after exercise.

Results:

During pre-exercise, all T_SK reached a steady-state (P ≤ 0.05), which ensured adequate thermal stabilisation. At the beginning of exercise, there was a significant reduction in the T_SK in most ROIs after 10 minutes of activity, except for the lower limbs (legs and thighs). After one hour of recovery, in the anterior view of the hands and thighs and in the posterior view of the legs, there were significant increases in the T_SK compared to pre-exercise.

Conclusions:

There were significant distinctions in the skin temperature distribution during exercise according to the activity of the area under consideration during exercise, which may be important in the development of physiological models and heat flux analyses for different purposes.

Evaluation of myofascial trigger points using infrared thermography: a critical review of the literature

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to review recent studies published on the use of infrared thermography for the assessment of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs).

METHODS

A search of the MEDLINE, CINAHL, PEDro, and SciELO databases was carried out between November 2012 and January 2013 for articles published in English, Portuguese, or Spanish from the year 2000 to 2012. Because of the nature of the included studies and the purpose of this review, the analysis of methodological quality was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool.

RESULTS

The search retrieved 11 articles, 2 of which were excluded based on language (German and Chinese). Three were duplicated in different databases, 1 did not use infrared thermography for diagnostic purposes, and the other did not use infrared thermography to measure the skin temperature. Thus, the final sample was made up of 4 observational investigations: 3 comparative studies and 1 accuracy study.

CONCLUSION

At present, there are few studies evaluating the accuracy and reliability of infrared thermography for the diagnosis and assessment of MTrPs. Of the few studies present, there is no agreement on skin temperature patterns in the presence of MTrPs.
