Ultrasensitive determination of selenium in water and food samples by ICP-MS: UiO-66-NH2 for preconcentration and direct slurry hydride generation

BACKGROUND

Selenium is an indispensable microelement for humans and food is the main source of selenium intake. As one of the best techniques for the determination of selenium, inductive coupling plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) features some unique advantages, such as wide linear range and high sensitivity. Nevertheless, it still remains a challenge to achieve the accurate and high sensitivity determination of ultra-trace selenium in food samples by ICP-MS owning to the high first ionization energy of selenium and interferences from sample matrices as well as isobaric interferences.

RESULTS

In this work, UiO-66-NH2 (metal organic framework, MOF) was fast synthesized by microwave method and employed for the preconcentration of ultra-trace selenium with an adsorption efficiency of nearly 100%. The selenium-adsorbed MOF was collected by filtration, and then simply converted to slurry for in situ hydride generation (HG) for sensitive detection of selenium by ICP-MS. Various factors affecting the adsorption of selenium by the MOF (including pH, adsorption time, and amount of MOF) together with main parameters of hydride generation (including concentrations of HCl and NaBH4) were carefully evaluated. Experimental results show that effective matrix separation can greatly reduce interference, with an excellent detection limit of 1 ng/L. The practicability and accuracy of this method were successfully confirmed by the determination of trace selenium in several food samples.

SIGNIFICANCE

UiO-66-NH2 (MOF) was used as an effective adsorbent for the preconcentration of selenium prior to direct slurry sampling HG-ICP-MS determination. Direct slurry sampling avoided additional elution procedures and was conducive to eliminating matrix and isobaric interferences. High sensitivity and anti-interference determination were achieved for determination of ultra-trace Se in complex food samples.

Teeth and bones micro-slurries introduction to MIP OES for elements simultaneous quantification

This study aims development of new, rapid and direct method for simultaneous multi-elemental determination in micro-volume slurried samples of teeth and bones. The method proposed allow for direct, without prior sample decomposition, injection of 15 μL of slurries (Bone Meal NIST 1486, deciduous human and dog teeth) into microwave induced plasma optical emission spectrometer (MIP OES) and determination of Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Pb, Sr and Zn. The optimization procedures were undertaken (univariate and simplex methods) to achieve the best values of parameters influencing the analytical signals. Minimum dead volume, high nebulization and slurry transport efficiency were obtained by using on-axis low-volume spray chamber/v-groove pneumatic nebulizer interface for 15 μL slurry injection in discontinues mode (at 1.2 mL min^-1 pump speed). Analytical parameters of the proposed method were assessed by determination of the limits of detection (LODs), absolute detection limit and precision (RSDs). The obtained LODs were appropriate (in the range of mg/kg) for the determination of the elements in the standard reference material (Bone Meal NIST 1486) for validation procedure and successful application in two real samples (deciduous human and dog teeth).

Evaluation of slurry sampling preparation of enteral nutrition formulations for multielement determination using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry

An analytical procedure for the multielement determination in enteral nutrition formulations employing slurry sampling and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) is proposed. A two-level full-factorial design was applied to assess the influence of the presence of stabilizing agents (HNO₃, Triton X-100 and ethanol) on the composition of the slurry. Multiple response was established as a dependent variable. The experimental conditions for the preparation of the slurry were: 2.0 mL of sample and 8.0 mL of 10% (v/v) HNO₃. The limits of detection (LOD) were 5; 9; and 10 µg L^-1 for Cu, Fe, Zn, respectively. For P, and K, the LOD were 8 and 24 mg L^-1, respectively. The method was applied for the analysis of three enteral nutrition formulation samples and the obtained concentrations ranges were (in mg L^-1): 0.41-0.43 (Cu), 2.0-2.9 (Fe), 1.7-3.1 (Zn), 682-1409 (K), and 217-344 (P).

Speciation analysis of inorganic As and Sb in urban dust using slurry sampling and detection by fast sequential hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry

In this work, a methodology for chemical speciation analysis of inorganic As and Sb in urban dust using slurry sampling and detection by fast sequential hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry is proposed. Doehlert design and desirability function were used to find the optimum conditions for hydride generation (1.0 mol L^-1 HCl and 0.9% m v^-1 NaBH₄). The accuracy of the analytical method was evaluated by analysis of reference material fly ash (BCR 176R), addition and recovery tests for inorganic As species, and comparison of independent methods for Sb determination in urban dust samples. The determination of the total concentrations of As and Sb and their inorganic species presented good accuracy, between 80 ± 1 and 101 ± 6%. Precision was expressed as the relative standard deviation and was better than 4.7% (n = 3). The limit-of-quantification values were 0.23 and 1.03 mg kg^-1 for As and Sb, respectively. The methodology was applied to eight samples of dust collected in an urban area of Salvador and Jaguaquara cities, Bahia, Northeast, Brazil, with an aerodynamic size lower than 38 μm. Concentrations of pentavalent inorganic species (iAs⁵⁺ and iSb⁵⁺) in relation to trivalent species (iAs³⁺ and iSb³⁺) were found in urban dust collected in the city of Salvador, which are regarded as more toxic for both elements. The enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index (I_geo) values showed that for some samples, the concentrations of iAs and iSb presented strong enrichment and, and regarding environment, strong to moderately polluted by iAs and iSb, with an indication of anthropogenic contributions. The occurrence of these inorganic constituents in the urban area of Salvador can be related with intense industrial activities and vehicular traffic.

Sequential determination and chemical speciation analysis of inorganic As and Sb in airborne particulate matter collected in outdoor and indoor environments using slurry sampling and detection by HG AAS

In this work, fast sequential determination and chemical speciation analysis of inorganic arsenic and antimony in airborne particulate matter collected in outdoor and indoor environments using slurry sampling and detection by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS) is proposed. A Doehlert design was applied to optimise the hydride generation conditions of As and Sb for fast sequential determination in the same aliquot of particulate matter samples after preparation of the slurry. The limits of quantification (LoQ) obtained for As and Sb were 0.3 and 0.9 ng m^-3, respectively. The accuracy of the analytical method was confirmed by analysis of the certified reference material of urban particulate matter (SRM NIST 1648a), presenting concordance with certified values of 92.7±7.7% for As and 91.2±9.5% for Sb. Precision was expressed as relative standard deviation (% RSD, n=3), with our results presenting values better than 3.4% and 4.2% for total inorganic As and Sb, respectively. For all analysed samples, total As concentrations and its inorganic species were below the LoQ of the analytical method (<0.3 ng m^-3). However, the averages of total inorganic Sb concentrations in airborne particulate matter, collected as total suspended outdoor particles (TSP_outdoor), inhalable particulate matter (PM₁₀), and total suspended indoor particles (TSP_indoor), were 3.1±0.5, 2.4±0.6, and 2.6±0.4 ng m^-3, respectively. Trivalent Sb (Sb³⁺) was the predominant inorganic species in all samples investigated, with mean percentages of 76%, 72%, and 73% in TSP_outdoor, PM₁₀, and TSP_indoor, respectively. The presence of Sb and its predominant inorganic form (Sb³⁺) can be attributed to vehicular traffic close to the sampled urban areas. Therefore, fast sequential determination of As and Sb and their inorganic species in particulate matter samples prepared as slurry by FS-HG-AAS is an efficient, accurate, and precise method and can be successfully applied to routine analysis.

Determination of nutrients in sugarcane juice using slurry sampling and detection by ICP OES

The fractional factorial and Doehlert designs for optimization of a slurry sampling procedure to determine of nutrients in sugarcane juice by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) were applied. External calibration curves were used for direct analysis of the slurry. This procedure allowed determination of Ca, Cu, Fe, K and Mg with limits of detection (LoD) obtained of 2.0, 0.04, 0.2, 1.0 and 1.5 mg L^-1, respectively. The precision was expressed as relative standard deviation (%RSD), being better than 1.4% (n = 3). Accuracy was confirmed by comparison with sample digestion method. The results for analysis of fourteen sugarcane juices samples demonstrated that the nutrients Ca, Cu, Fe, K and Mg have average contents of 108, 0.506, 6.40, 470 and 114 mg L^-1, respectively. The proposed analytical method is a good alternative for simultaneous determination of nutrients in sugarcane juice using introduction of slurries and detection by ICP OES.

Sample preparation for arsenic speciation analysis in baby food by generation of substituted arsines with atomic absorption spectrometry detection

A slurry sampling procedure for arsenic speciation analysis in baby food by arsane generation, cryogenic trapping and detection with atomic absorption spectrometry is presented. Several procedures were tested for slurry preparation, including different reagents (HNO₃, HCl and tetramethylammonium hydroxide - TMAH) and their concentrations, water bath heating and ultrasound-assisted agitation. The best results for inorganic arsenic (iAs) and dimethylarsinate (DMA) were reached when using 3molL^-1 HCl under heating and ultrasound-assisted agitation. The developed method was applied for the analysis of five porridge powder and six baby meal samples. The trueness of the method was checked with a certified reference material (CRM) of total arsenic (tAs), iAs and DMA in rice (ERM-BC211). Arsenic recoveries (mass balance) for all samples and CRM were performed by the determination of the tAs by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave-assisted digestion and its comparison against the sum of the results from the speciation analysis. The relative limits of detection were 0.44, 0.24 and 0.16µgkg^-1 for iAs, methylarsonate and DMA, respectively. The concentrations of the most toxic arsenic species (iAs) in the analyzed baby food samples ranged between 4.2 and 99µgkg^-1 which were below the limits of 300, 200 and 100µgkg^-1 set by the Brazilian, Chinese and European legislation, respectively.

Bovine serum albumin-Cu(II) hybrid nanoflowers: An effective adsorbent for solid phase extraction and slurry sampling flame atomic absorption spectrometric analysis of cadmium and lead in water, hair, food and cigarette samples

Herein, the synthesis of bovine serum albumin-Cu(II) hybrid nanoflowers (BSA-NFs) through the building blocks of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and copper(II) ions in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and their use as adsorbent for cadmium and lead ions are reported. The BSA-NFs, for the first time, were efficiently utilized as novel adsorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE) of cadmium and lead ions in water, food, cigarette and hair samples. The method is based on the separation and pre-concentration of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by BSA-NFs prior to determination by slurry analysis via flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The analytes were adsorbed on BSA-NFs under the vortex mixing and then the ion-loaded slurry was separated and directly introduced into the flame AAS nebulizer by using a hand-made micro sample introduction system to eliminate a number of drawbacks. The effects of analytical key parameters, such as pH, amount of BSA-NFs, vortexing time, sample volume, and matrix effect of foreign ions on adsorbing of Cd(II) and Pb(II) were systematically investigated and optimized. The limits of detection (LODs) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) were calculated as 0.37 μg L(-)(1) and 8.8 μg L(-)(1), respectively. The relative standard deviation percentages (RSDs) (N = 5) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) were 7.2%, and 5.0%, respectively. The accuracy of the developed procedure was validated by the analysis of certified reference materials (TMDA-53.3 Fortified Water, TMDA-70 Fortified Water, SPS-WW2 Waste Water, NCSDC-73349 Bush Branches and Leaves) and by addition/recovery analysis. The quantitative recoveries were obtained for the analysis of certified reference materials and addition/recovery tests. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of cadmium and lead in water, food, cigarette and hair samples.

Synthesis of polyethyleneimine capped carbon dots for preconcentration and slurry sampling analysis of trace chromium in environmental water samples

Carbon dots capped with polyethyleneimine (CD-PEI) were synthesized and applied in selective separation and preconcentration of trace Cr(VI). Dispersed particle extraction (DPE) slurry sampling with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was used to selectively and sensitively determine Cr(VI) in water samples. The as-synthesized CD-PEI was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, elemental analysis, fluorescence and zeta potential measurement. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on CD-PEI was evaluated. Its isothermal adsorption was studied and fitted in the Langmuir model. Nearly 85% of Cr(VI) was adsorbed within 10 min showed that the CD-PEI exhibited fairly fast kinetics for the sorption of Cr(VI). Experimental conditions, including the content and size of CD-PEI, sample pH, adsorption time, sample volume, slurry volume and interfering ions, were further optimized to obtain efficient preconcentration and high-precision determination of Cr(VI). CD-PEI with small size turned to be a good candidate for the preparation of slurry. CD-PEI served not only as a promising adsorbent for separation and preconcentration of Cr, but also a signal-enhancing agent in FAAS. The method achieved an enhancement factor of 30 and a detection limit (S/N=3) of 0.21 µg L(-1) Cr(VI) with a consumption of 14.0 mL sample and an adsorption time of 5 min, which provided two times of signal enhancement. The RSD for 11 replicate measurements of 5.0 µg L(-1) Cr(VI) was 2.8%. The possible signal enhancement mechanism was proposed. The developed method has been applied to determine trace Cr(VI) in a variety of water samples.
