Lubrication mechanisms of dispersed carbon microspheres in boundary through hydrodynamic lubrication regimes

HYPOTHESIS

Carbon microspheres have been shown to reduce friction and surface wear at relatively low speeds and high applied loads (i.e., within the boundary lubrication regime). We hypothesize that in dilute colloidal lubricating systems there is an interplay between the size of the carbon microspheres and the lubrication gap size, which determines the dominant lubricating mechanism of the system.

EXPERIMENTS

A 60 wt% aqueous glycerol solution was used as the base lubricant and compared to various carbon particle-based lubricant formulations ranging in particle concentrations from 0.05 to 0.30 vol%. The tribological properties of the various lubricant formulations were tested on a pin-on-disk tribometer. A simplified Stribeck plot was produced to understand the changing mechanism of lubrication over a wide range of conditions.

FINDINGS

The Stribeck curves show that the carbon microspheres assist lubrication by a rolling mechanism primarily in the boundary lubrication regime. A 0.20 vol% carbon-based lubricant formulation showed the best friction reduction compared to the base lubricant. Increasing speed increases the lubricating gap between the friction pair beyond the size of the particles, thereby nullifying the rolling mechanism of the particles. We introduce a modified specific film thickness parameter to determine the lubrication regime in a particle-lubricant system.

Roles of viscosity, applied load and surface wettability on the lubrication behaviour of model liquid/semi-solid foods: Measurements with a bespoke tribo-cell fixture and rotational rheometer

Thin film sliding and friction phenomena of food bolus confined between tongue-palate surfaces during oral processing can be explored using tribological measurements. However, these measurements are still limited within the food industry due to the requirement of expensive commercial instruments which are not commonly used in the food industry. This work has designed and manufactured a modular "tribological cell" (tribo-cell) that can simulate lubricated soft-hard contact interfaces and can be mounted on a rotational rheometer to perform tribological measurements. The tribo-cell was validated by performing tribological measurements using a range of corn syrup solutions as model liquid foods. It was shown that the Stribeck curve describing the change in friction behaviour with entrainment speed or with the product of entrainment speed and liquid viscosity could be obtained. Since tribology deals with surface property, the cell was then used in the further studies to demonstrate the effects of applied normal load and surface wetting on the tribological response of lubricated hard-soft contact of the designed fixture. These parameters were shown to have a marked influence on in the boundary and mixed-lubrication regimes. The designed tribo-cell was also used to illustrate the impact of fat content on the lubrication properties of commercial liquid and semi-solid foods with different fat contents, thus, pointing out to the importance of tribology as a vital tool for product formulation designs in food and beverage industry.

Lubrication study of representative fluid foods between mimicked oral surfaces

The lubricities of glycerol solutions with different viscosities were investigated at various frictional pairs, speeds, and loads to explore the lubrication regulations of diverse foods in mouths of different people. The friction pairs were characterized in terms of mechanical properties, surface morphology, and hydrophobicity. The results showed that the partial or complete Stribeck curves occurred with different speeds and viscosities. Various friction pairs had great influences on the boundary lubrication zone, but little influences on the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) zone. Increasing loads caused the friction coefficient decreasing in boundary lubrication zone; however, the friction coefficient changed a little in the mixed lubrication and EHL zones.

Cartilage-like tribological performance of charged double network hydrogels

A synthetic hydrogel material may offer utility as a cartilage replacement if it is able to maintain low friction in different sliding environments and achieve bulk mechanical properties to withstand the severe environment of the joint. In this work, we compared the tribological behavior of four double network (DN) hydrogels to that of fresh porcine cartilage in both water and fetal bovine serum (FBS). The DN hydrogels were comprised of a negatively charged 1st network and a 2nd network wherein comonomers of varying charge (i.e. neutral, positive, negative, and zwitterionic) were introduced at 10 wt% to an otherwise neutral network. A steel ball probe was used to perform microindentation tests to determine the surface elastic modulus of the samples and estimate their contact areas during sliding. Friction tests using a stationary probe with a stage that reciprocated at a range of speeds were performed to develop lubrication curves in both water and FBS. We found that the DN hydrogels with a neutral or zwitterionic 2nd network had the lowest friction and shear stresses, notably below that of cartilage. The differences in charge and structure of the samples were more evident in water than in FBS, as the lubrication responses for all the hydrogels spanned a wider range of values. In FBS, the lubrication responses were pushed towards elasto-hydrodynamics with nearly all friction coefficient values falling below 0.3. This indicates that the FBS interacts with the hydrogels and cartilage samples in a similar manner as that of cartilage by maintaining a robust layer of solution at the interface during sliding. These DN hydrogels prove to fulfill, and in some cases surpass, the lubrication demands for cartilage replacement in load bearing joints.

Stribeck Curve of Magnetorheological Fluid within Pin-on-Disc Configuration: An Experimental Investigation

The paper focuses on the coefficient of friction (COF) of a magnetorheological fluid (MRF) in the wide range of working conditions across all the lubrication regimes-boundary, mixed, elastohydrodynamic (EHD), and hydrodynamic (HD) lubrication, specifically focused on the common working area of MR damper. The coefficient of friction was measured for MR fluids from Lord company with concentrations of 22, 32, and 40 vol. % of iron particles at temperatures 40 and 80 °C. The results were compared with a reference fluid, a synthetic liquid hydrocarbon PAO4 used as a carrier fluid of MRF. The results show that at boundary regime and temperature 40 °C all the fluids exhibit similar COF of 0.11-0.13. Differences can be found in the EHD regime, where the MR fluid COF is significantly higher (0.08) in comparison with PAO4 (0.04). The COF of MR fluid in the HD regime rose very steeply in comparison with PAO4. The effect of particle concentration is significant in the HD regime.
