Moderating effects of academic involvement in web-based learning management system success: A multigroup analysis

While several educational institutions in India, in accordance to global practices, have adopted Web-Based Learning Management Systems (WLMS) to supplement classroom courses, it is largely seen that these WLMSs fail in their objectives, leading to little or no return on investments. The study aims to define the factors that affect students’ acceptance of a web-based learning management system and test the moderating effect of their academic involvement in the success of a WLMS. 477 valid questionnaires were collected from university/college students to empirically test the research model using the structural equation modelling approach. The results concludes that indirect and direct effects account for 49% of the variation in the intention to use, which is explained by technical system quality, information quality, educational quality, service quality of the technical support team and user satisfaction. High academic involvement moderates the impact of different service qualities of the WLMS on user satisfaction, intention to use the system, and success of the WLMS. Based on the findings, theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

Is it really student-focused planning? Perspectives of students with autism

BACKGROUND

Student-focused planning has emerged as a primary indicator of post-school success. However, without mandated policies or procedures in place for transition planning in Australia, students with autism will continue to be minimally engaged or completely disengaged from the transition planning process in schools. This is likely to significantly impact post-school outcomes for these students. While previous studies have investigated the extent of student involvement in their IEP transition planning meetings, none of these studies considered the views of students with autism, despite research suggesting that children are experts of their own experiences and their own lives.

AIM

The aim of the current study was to determine how involved students with autism were in the transition planning process.

METHOD AND PROCEDURES

Interviews were conducted with 18 students with autism aged 15-18 years. Interviews were analysed using inductive content analysis.

OUTCOMES AND RESULTS

The results revealed that students lacked knowledge of the transition planning process, however many students expressed the desire to be significantly involved in the process. The majority of students reported that they only contributed minimally during meetings. Numerous students reported being unaware of existing transition practices (i.e., work experience opportunities) that were in place for them.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

There is an urgent need for transition planning to be mandated in Australia to allow students with disabilities to receive appropriate support in school (i.e., schools and teachers should actively advocate person-centered planning and support students to develop self-determination skills).

Analysis of pharmacy student motivators and deterrents for professional organization involvement

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study was to determine motivators and deterrents impacting a student pharmacist's decision to join professional organizations. The goal was to create a list of meaningful factors that organizations can use for membership recruitment.

METHODS

This descriptive study utilized a blinded electronic survey sent to eight accredited pharmacy schools in Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. The survey assessed motivating and hindering factors, as well as demographic data.

RESULTS

Eight-hundred fifty-six students completed the survey, a 15.05% participation rate. Professional development and networking were the top two endorsed motivational factors, selected as significant by 88.0% and 87.5% respectively. Upon chi-square analysis, networking (p<0.001), involvement opportunities (p=0.01), and scholarships (p=0.02) were motivating factors with which membership was found to be significantly influenced. Networking and involvement opportunities were more significant for members while scholarships were a greater motivator among nonmembers. Time required for involvement and cost were the most commonly selected hindrances with 78% and 76% respectively identifying these as significant barriers. The hindering factor found to be significantly different between active members and nonmembers was bylaws/rules of the organization (p=0.032), with non-members rating this as a greater consideration than current members.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

Multiple factors contribute to a student's decision to join a professional organization. Those active members find greater significance in networking involvement opportunities. Non-member students found scholarships more motivating and recognize bylaws as a consideration for membership more than current members. These results emphasize the multifactorial nature of membership and may direct future membership initiatives.

How can students contribute? A qualitative study of active student involvement in development of technological learning material for clinical skills training

Background

Policy initiatives and an increasing amount of the literature within higher education both call for students to become more involved in creating their own learning. However, there is a lack of studies in undergraduate nursing education that actively involve students in developing such learning material with descriptions of the students’ roles in these interactive processes.

Method

Explorative qualitative study, using data from focus group interviews, field notes and student notes. The data has been subjected to qualitative content analysis.

Results

Active student involvement through an iterative process identified five different learning needs that are especially important to the students: clarification of learning expectations, help to recognize the bigger picture, stimulation of interaction, creation of structure, and receiving context- specific content.

Conclusion

The iterative process involvement of students during the development of new technological learning material will enhance the identification of important learning needs for students. The use of student and teacher knowledge through an adapted co-design process is the most optimal level of that involvement.

Undergraduate Research: Importance, Benefits, and Challenges

Developing and maintaining undergraduate research programs benefits students, faculty mentors, and the university. Incorporating a research component along with a sound academic foundation enables students to develop independent critical thinking skills along with oral and written communication skills. The research process impacts valuable learning objectives that have lasting influence as undergraduates prepare for professional service. Faculty members at teaching intensive institutions can enhance learning experiences for students while benefiting from a productive research agenda. The university in turn benefits from presentations and publications that serve to increase visibility in the scientific community. Whether projects are derived through student-generated or mentor-generated means, students benefit from completion of exposure to the hypothesis-driven scientific method.
