Thermal Investigations of Annelated Triazinones-Potential Analgesic and Anticancer Agents

In this article, for the first time, TG-DSC and TG-FTIR investigations of potential pharmaceutics, i.e., analgesic and anticancer active annelated triazinones (1-9) have been presented. The thermal behaviour of these molecules was established in oxidative and inert conditions. The solid-liquid phase transition for each compound (1-9) was documented by one sharp DSC peak confirming the high purity of each sample studied. All the molecules were characterised in terms of calorimetric changes and mass changes during their heating. They revealed high thermal stability in oxidative and inert conditions. The observed tendency in thermal stability changes in relation to a substituent present at the phenyl moiety was found to be similar in air and nitrogen. It was confirmed that annelated triazinones 1-9 were stable up to a temperature range of 241-296 °C in air, and their decomposition process proceeded in two stages under oxidative conditions. In addition, it was established that their thermal stability in air decreased in the following order of R at the phenyl moiety: 4-Cl > 3,4-Cl2 > H > 3-Cl > 4-CH3 > 2-CH3 > 3-CH3 > 2-Cl > 2-OCH3. The volatile decomposition products of the investigated molecules were proposed by comparing the FTIR spectra collected during their thermogravimetric analysis in nitrogen with the spectra from the database of reference compounds. None of annelated triazinones 1-9 underwent any polymorphic transformation during thermal studies. All the compounds proved to be safe for erythrocytes. In turn, molecules 3, 6, and 9 protected red blood cells from oxidative damage, and therefore may be helpful in the prevention of free radical-mediated diseases.

Comparative study on the inhibiting effect of dissolvable tiny-foam extinguishing agent and chlorine salts on coal spontaneous combustion

Coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) is a global disaster and detrimental to the ecological environment. This study aims to better apply environmentally friendly dissolvable tiny-foam extinguisher (DTE) to CSC and look further into the inhibition mechanism. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) were employed to test the oxidation properties of coal samples treated with DTE, NaCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2 inhibitors, and the reaction mechanisms and kinetic parameters in the high-temperature stage of coal oxidation were determined. The results revealed that the inhibition of the four inhibitors was similar in the initial period of the coal oxidation, DTE increased the cracking temperature of the coal by 37 °C, mass loss was a minimum when reaching the ignition temperature, and inhibition was better than the other inhibitors at the low temperature. DTE had higher thermal stability and played a stable role in suppression at the high temperature, while chlorine salt inhibitors promoted the oxidative exothermic reaction. DTE coal sample absorbed forty times more heat during the endothermic stage than raw coal, ten times more than MgCl2, and released a minimum of heat. In the decomposition and combustion stages, the reaction mechanism of coal and oxygen conformed to the three-dimensional diffusion Z.-L.-T. equation, and the apparent activation energy of the DTE-treated coal sample was about 40 kJ/mol higher than raw coal.

Structure and Oxidation Behavior of Multicomponent (Hf,Zr,Ti,Nb,Mo)C Carbide Ceramics

Multicomponent ceramics based on transition metals carbides are widely known for their excellent physicomechanical properties and thermal stability. The variation of the elemental composition of multicomponent ceramics provides the required properties. The present study examined the structure and oxidation behavior of (Hf,Zr,Ti,Nb,Mo)C ceramics. Single-phase ceramic solid solution (Hf,Zr,Ti,Nb,Mo)C with FCC structure was obtained by sintering under pressure. It is shown that during the mechanical processing of an equimolar powder mixture of TiC-ZrC-NbC-HfC-Mo₂C carbides, the formation of double and triple solid solutions occurs. The hardness of (Hf,Zr,Ti,Nb,Mo)C ceramic was found at 15 ± 0.8 GPa, compressive ultimate strength-at 1.6 ± 0.1 GPa and fracture toughness-at 4.4 ± 0.1 MPa∙m^1/2. The oxidation behavior of the produced ceramics in an oxygen-containing atmosphere was studied in the range of 25 to 1200 °C by means of high-temperature in situ diffraction. It was demonstrated that (Hf,Zr,Ti,Nb,Mo)C ceramics oxidation is a two-stage process accompanied by the change of oxide layer phase composition. As a possible mechanism of oxidation, diffusion of oxygen into the ceramic bulk results in the formation of a complex oxide layer made of c-(Zr,Hf,Ti,Nb)O₂, m-(Zr,Hf)O₂, Nb₂Zr₆O₁₇ and (Ti,Nb)O₂ was proposed.

TG-DSC and TG-FTIR Studies of Annelated Triazinylacetic Acid Ethyl Esters-Potential Anticancer Agents

To avoid problems associated with the storage and processing of newly developed potential medicines, there is a need to carry out thermal studies in the preclinical phase of drug development. The thermal behaviour and decomposition pathway of a whole novel class of patented potential molecular pharmaceutics, i.e., ethyl 2-[4-oxo-8-(R-phenyl)-4,6,7,8-tetrahydroimidazo[2,1-c][1,2,4]triazin-3-yl]acetates (1-6) were reported for the first time in inert and oxidative atmospheres. The experiments were conducted with the use of simultaneous thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and simultaneous thermogravimetry coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR). The decomposition pathways of compounds 1-6 were found to be different under oxidative and inert conditions. It was proven that the investigated molecules reveal higher thermal stability under a synthetic air atmosphere than under a nitrogen atmosphere, and their decomposition is preceded by the melting process. Among all the investigated compounds, only the meta-chloro derivative (4) was found to exhibit interesting polymorphic behaviour at a low heating rate (10 °C min^-1). It was proven that the oxidative decomposition process of the studied molecules proceeds in three overlapping stages accompanied by strong exothermic effects. Additionally, it was concluded that the title compounds were stable up to a temperature of 195-216 °C in an atmosphere of synthetic air, and their thermal stability decreased in the order of R at the benzene ring: 4-CH₃ > 3,4-Cl₂ > 4-Cl > H > 2-OCH₃ > 3-Cl.

Study on the Structure, Magnetic Properties and Mechanism of Zn-Doped Yttrium Iron Garnet Nanomaterial Prepared by the Sol-gel Method

To explore the effect and mechanism of bivalent ion doping on yttrium iron garnet (YIG), Zn-YIG (Zn-doped YIG) nanoparticles with a size of 60~70 nm were prepared by the sol-gel method. It was proven that Zn ion doping resulted in lattice expansion and internal stress due to crystallite size shrinkage. A Raman spectroscopic analysis proved the influence of Zn doping on the crystal structure and peak intensity by analyzing Raman vibration modes. The characteristics and chemical mechanism of mass loss and phase evolution in each temperature region were explored through TG-DSC measurements. Moreover, it was revealed that the antiferromagnetic coupling, pinning mechanisms and particle aggregation lead to coercivity, exhibiting different variation trends. A saturation magnetization (Ms) curve variation mechanism was further revealed, which was due to the thermal effects, super-exchange effect, and coupling effect between sub-lattices. Meanwhile, the influence of the thermal effect on Ms and its mechanism were explored by spin theory, and it was proven that it was mainly caused by the random arrangement of magnetic moments and thermal vibration. These results provide theoretical support for the wider application of YIG devices in microwave and high-temperature fields.

Quantitative Analysis of the Calcium Hydroxide Content of EVA-Modified Cement Paste Based on TG-DSC in a Dual Atmosphere

The calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) content is one of the main indices of cement hydration degree. In order to accurately determine the calcium hydroxide content of ethylene and vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer-modified cement paste, a dual atmosphere thermogravimetric method (first in an oxidizing atmosphere and then in an inert atmosphere) was used to track the mass loss and change in enthalpy by TG-DSC (simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry). The results showed that using the dual atmosphere thermogravimetric method, the source of mass loss can be distinguished. The exothermic peaks in an oxidizing atmosphere show the oxidation reactions of EVA, while the endothermic peak in an inert atmosphere is due to the pyrolysis reaction of EVA and the decomposition of the calcium hydroxide. The influence of EVA on cement hydration was investigated. The results showed that the polymer powder can be dispersed in water, forming a kind of composite membrane. The test method of dual atmosphere thermogravimetry to measure the calcium hydroxide content of polymer-modified cement pastes is more accurate and convenient than those previously applied.

Sintering Reaction and Pyrolysis Process Analysis of Al/Ta/PTFE

When the Al/Ta/PTFE reactive material was sintered at 360 °C in a vacuum sintering furnace, it was found that the material reacted to form a soft fluffy white substance and carbon black. To explore the reaction process further, powder samples of pure PTFE, Al/PTFE, Ta/PTFE and Al/Ta/PTFE, and molded cylindrical specimens were prepared. A TG-DSC test was carried out on the thermal reaction of four reactive materials, and XRD phase analysis was conducted on the white product, formed by the sintering reaction and the residue of the TG-DSC test sample, based on which of the pyrolysis processes and reaction mechanisms were analyzed. The results show that Ta and PTFE could have a chemical reaction at sintering temperature (360 °C) to form soft and fluffy white material TaF₃ and carbon black, which can overflow the surface of the specimen and cause cracking of the specimen, which is tightly pressed. Since no obvious exothermic peak showed up on the TG-DSC curve, the composition of the residue of TG-DSC sample at different temperatures was tested and TaF₃ was detected in the residue at 350 °C and 360 °C, indicating that Ta began to react with PTFE at a temperature range of 340–350 °C. According to the chemical properties and product formation of Ta, it could be speculated that the reaction mechanism between Ta and PTFE involves the PTFE decomposing first, then the fluorine-containing gas product reacting with metal Ta. According to the temperature range of the reaction, it is estimated that PTFE starts to decompose before 500 °C, but it is not detected effectively by TG-DSC, and the introduction of Ta could also affect the decomposition process of PTFE.

Physical and functional characterization of succinoglycan exopolysaccharide produced by Rhizobium radiobacter CAS from curd sample

Identification and rheological behaviour of succinoglycan exopolysaccharide (EPS) from Rhizobium radiobacter CAS isolated from curd was published in earlier reports. In current investigation physicochemical and functional properties of CAS EPS has been studied. SEC-MALLS revealed molecular weight (Mw), number molecular weight (Mn) and polydispersity index (PDI) of CAS EPS as 4.05×10⁶g·mol^-1, 3.82×10⁶g·mol^-1 and, 1.06 respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis showed the high thermal stability of CAS polymer where approximately 77% of CAS hydrocolloid maintain physical integrity and stability with temperature degradation (T_d) at 290°C. Scanning electron microscopy and particle size analysis confirmed the porous and hygroscopic nature and 2.049μm size of CAS EPS respectively. Equally important functional properties such as water activity (0.55), water solubility (95%), water contact angle (54.83°), water binding capacity (101g/g), water holding capacity (68.19g/g), oil binding ability (soybean and groundnut oils were found 4.35g/g and 3.68g/g) and swelling index (17.5mL/g) were examined for CAS EPS. Prevention of syneresis has been studied at 1% CAS EPS concentration which significantly prohibited the degree of syneresis of starch. These physico-functional properties make CAS EPS a prominent candidate for food processing and product development sector.

Thermal Behavior and Structural Study of SiO₂/Poly(ε-caprolactone) Hybrids Synthesized via Sol-Gel Method

SiO₂-based organic-inorganic hybrids (OIHs) are versatile materials whose properties may change significantly because of their thermal treatment. In fact, after their preparation at low temperature by the sol-gel method, they still have reactive silanol groups due to incomplete condensation reactions that can be removed by accelerating these processes upon heating them in controlled experimental conditions. In this study, the thermal behavior of pure SiO₂ and four SiO₂-based OIHs containing increasing amount (6, 12, 24 and 50 wt %) of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) has been studied by simultaneous thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The FTIR analysis of the gas mixture evolved at defined temperatures from the samples submitted to the TG experiments identified the mechanisms of thermally activated processes occurring upon heating. In particular, all samples already release ethanol at low temperature. Moreover, thermal degradation of PCL takes place in the richest-PCL sample, leading to 5-hexenoic acid, H₂O, CO₂, CO and ε-caprolactone. After the samples' treatment at 450, 600 and 1000 °C, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra revealed that they were still amorphous, while the presence of cristobalite is found in the richest-PCL material.

Microencapsulation of flavors in carnauba wax

The subject of this study is the development of flavor wax formulations aimed for food and feed products. The melt dispersion technique was applied for the encapsulation of ethyl vanillin in wax microcapsules. The surface morphology of microparticles was investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM), while the loading content was determined by HPLC measurements. This study shows that the decomposition process under heating proceeds in several steps: vanilla evaporation occurs at around 200 °C, while matrix degradation starts at 250 °C and progresses with maxima at around 360, 440 and 520 °C. The results indicate that carnauba wax is an attractive material for use as a matrix for encapsulation of flavours in order to improve their functionality and stability in products.
