Accessible Consumer Electronics Are Essential to Closing the Gap in Assistive Technology Provision

According to the Global Report on Assistive Technology (2023) [1] more than 2.5 billion people require one or more assistive products - a number that is expected to grow to over 3.5 billion by 2050 due to the aging of our societies. Over the past decade, the design of products that empower people with a disability has shifted from specialized and dedicated products designed only for those with a disability to features and functions integrated into cost-effective consumer technologies for the benefit of all. The opportunity to expand the availability of such technologies is at risk of being ignored due to models of AT delivery that are founded in medical devices, and which have failed to reflect trends in our understanding of technology and the choices and preferences expressed by persons with a disability. This research suggests that such expansion offers significant benefits to people with a disability and better both economic and social return on investment for authorities.

Assistive Technology Use in the Workplace by People with Blindness and Low Vision: Perceived Skill Level, Satisfaction, and Challenges

In the current labor market, assistive technology (AT) is vital to employment for people with blindness or low vision (B/LV), yet we know little about their AT use in the workplace. The purpose of this descriptive study was to increase our knowledge in this area. Participants were 314 employed people with B/LV who completed an online or phone survey about AT used on the job and perceived skill level, satisfaction, and challenges experienced with their workplace AT. Two researchers utilized content analysis to code open-ended responses and descriptive statistics were used to analyze quantitative data. Self-perceived skill levels were moderately high to high for each AT. Satisfaction with AT was generally high, but 15% or more of participants expressed dissatisfaction with their AT for five tasks. Dissatisfaction with AT for some work tasks differed noticeably by type of AT being used to accomplish the task. Accessing certain software, websites, or digital documents was the most common challenge experienced, mentioned by 59.1% of participants, representing an ongoing problem in the technological workplace environment for people with B/LV. In addition to websites, specific areas that present access or utilization challenges are slide presentation software, PDFs, spreadsheets, virtual meeting software, and printed material.

Correlation of the DNA Concentration of Human Samples to Electrical Bioimpedance Measurements: A Pilot Study

It is necessary to evaluate the total deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) concentration in gene expression assays. The existing techniques require equipment that is expensive for many labs in developing countries. Portable and inexpensive equipment is needed for easy and economical DNA quantification. Electrical bioimpedance spectroscopy (EBiS) is a non-invasive and inexpensive technique for examining the electrical properties of biological materials. The aim of this study was to explore a potential correlation between the measurement of total DNA extracted from human samples by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and EBiS. Hence, after quantifying the total DNA extracted from each sample by UV-Vis spectroscopy, EBiS was recorded and a possible correlation between the two measurements was analyzed. Considering the bioimpedance phase parameter at 5.24 MHz, a significant correlation was found with total DNA, especially when the concentration was below 100 ng/μL (Spearman coefficient = 0.82, p<0.005). Additional experiments are warranted to confirm these findings.

GoCC4All a pervasive technology to provide access to TV to the deafblind community

Considering the importance of communication and independence for the deafblind community, this work presents findings of the use of technology to address the lack of information due to communication challenges among the deafblind community. Over time, many investigations have been carried out regarding this matter, but very few providing solution, which is why this study emerged, looking to making all the information broadcasted through television accessible for this community. The work team designed a technology (GoCC4All) to address the needs of the deafblind community. GoCC4All provides access to captions available on TV through braille displays and mobile devices. Our research process and results outline the path for creating, adapting, and adopting new technologies for people with disabilities who have the right to access the information just as their peers without disabilities. The information in this paper is based on two surveys, an initial beta testing (BT) and a final survey among a group of 14 users (UT) who tested the GoCC4All application. Our findings support the positive impact of the iterative creation of assistive technology based on users' experience and users' recommendations to better serve the needs of the deafblind community.
