Soft Polymer-Actuated Compliant Microgripper with Adaptive Vibration-Controlled Grasp and Release

Microgrippers that incorporate soft actuators are appropriate for micromanipulation or microsurgery owing to their ability to grasp objects without causing damage. However, developing a microgripper with a large gripping range that can produce a large force with high speed remains challenging in soft actuation mechanisms. Herein, we introduce a compliant microgripper driven by a soft dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) called a spiral flexure cone DEA (SFCDEA). The submillimeter-scale SFCDEA exhibited a controllable linear displacement over a high bandwidth and the capability of lifting 100.9 g, which was 670 times higher than its mass. Subsequently, we developed a compliant microgripper based on the SFCDEA using smart composite microstructure technology to fabricate three-dimensional gripper linkages. We demonstrated that the microgripper was able to grasp various millimeter-scale objects with different shapes, sizes, and weights without a complex feedback control owing to its compliance. We proved the versatility of our gripper in robotic manipulation by demonstrating adaptive grasping and releasing of small objects using vibrations owing to its high bandwidth.

Vitrimeric shape memory polymer-based fingertips for adaptive grasping

The variability in the shapes and sizes of objects presents a significant challenge for two-finger robotic grippers when it comes to manipulating them. Based on the chemistry of vitrimers (a new class of polymer materials that have dynamic covalent bonds, which allow them to reversibly change their mechanical properties under specific conditions), we present two designs as 3D-printed shape memory polymer-based shape-adaptive fingertips (SMP-SAF). The fingertips have two main properties needed for an effective grasping. First, the ability to adapt their shape to different objects. Second, exhibiting variable rigidity, to lock and retain this new shape without the need for any continuous external triggering system. Our two design strategies are: 1) A curved part, which is suitable for grasping delicate and fragile objects. In this mode and prior to gripping, the SMP-SAFs are straightened by the force of the parallel gripper and are adapted to the object by shape memory activation. 2) A straight part that takes on the form of the objects by contact force with them. This mode is better suited for gripping hard bodies and provides a more straightforward shape programming process. The SMP-SAFs can be programmed by heating them up above glass transition temperature (54°C) via Joule-effect of the integrated electrically conductive wire or by using a heat gun, followed by reshaping by the external forces (without human intervention), and subsequently fixing the new shape upon cooling. As the shape programming process is time-consuming, this technique suits adaptive sorting lines where the variety of objects is not changed from grasp to grasp, but from batch to batch.

Mechanically controlled robotic gripper with bistability for fast and adaptive grasping

This paper presents a novel bistable gripper inspired by the closure motion found in the jaw of a hummingbird. With a bistable characteristic, the robotic gripper can grasp objects rapidly without applying continuous external force. The bistable gripper comprises a linkage-driven mechanism and two bionic jaws consisting of thin elastic polyvinyl chloride sheets with two clamped ends connected by a hinge. The shape of the thin sheets was modeled and optimized using geometric analysis, and the morphing processes of the bionic jaw were analyzed using finite element simulations and experiments. Furthermore, we explored the motion characteristics of the clamps during the snap-through and snap-back processes and divided the motion into two phases: delay and snap. Force and response time tests show that the proposed bistable gripper can achieve fast bending within milliseconds under a low pull force during the snap phase. Grasping experiments demonstrated that the proposed robotic gripper is adaptable for grasping objects of various shapes and weights. After grasping, the bistable gripper can release the target by pulling the actuating rod and automatically return to the open state. This study reveals the unique bending mechanism of thin sheets that can be exploited for fast, versatile, and adaptive grasping. The bistable gripper exhibits the potential to reduce energy consumption and simplify control when performing tasks in unstructured environments such as space and underwater.

Development and Evaluation of an Adaptive Multi-DOF Finger with Mechanical-Sensor Integrated for Prosthetic Hand

To realize the adaptive grasping of objects with diverse shapes and to capture the joint angles of the finger, a multi degree of freedom (DOF) adaptive finger for prosthetic hand is proposed in this paper. The fingers are designed with three joints. The maximum rotation angle of the finger joints is 90°. The angle at which the finger joints bend can be captured. Firstly, the prototype design, forward kinematics and force analysis of phalanges are described in detail. In order to achieve an adaptive motion pattern similar to that of the human hand, this paper investigates the optimization of the torsion spring stiffness coefficient so that the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints, proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints, and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints of the bionic finger meet a motion ratio of approximately 3:3:1. Then, in order to realize the joint angle measurement in the process of grasping an object, the mechanical-sensor integrated finger joint is designed, and the composition, angle measurement principle and measurement circuit are introduced in detail. Finally, joint angle measurement, movement law evaluation and object grasping experiments are performed to verify the validity of the designed finger. The experimental results show that the root-mean-square (RMS) of the DIP, PIP and MCP angle measurement errors are 0.36°, 0.59° and 0.32°, respectively. The designed finger is able to grasp objects with different shapes stably.

An Integrated Multi-Sensor Network for Adaptive Grasping of Fragile Fruits: Design and Feasibility Tests

Secure grasping of fragile fruits and other agricultural products without potential slip and damage is still a challenge due to the size and shape varying, bruise susceptible, as well as hardness changing during fruit and vegetable maturation. In the robotic grasping process, the mechanical damage mainly depends upon the aggressiveness of the gripper and the sensitivity of the product to the damage. In this study, a flexible gripper integrated with multi-sensor network is designed and tested. The network proposed includes three kinds of sensors that enable the gripper to grasp various products with the sense of touch and visual perception. Particular attention has been attached to the sensors applied between the fingers, and this makes sensing and grasping capabilities improved. To create an accurate grasping system, a grasping algorithm and the force control model are proposed for any bending state based on Cosserat theory. The boundary detection is included in the grasping algorithm, detecting the shape edge by some certain point calculation. The created grasping system guarantees mechanical compliance by evaluating and adjusting the finger status including force, angle, and direction. Multi-group tests have been done on grasping several objects of different sizes and materials in daily life. The relationship between force, bending, and surface material is also analyzed and compared under different conditions. The numerical comparisons related to the measurement error are analyzed based on their standard deviations. Experimental results indicate that this flexible manipulator with proposed system and strategy has better grasping ability for fragile fruits with its good flexibility and dexterity.

Design and Implementation of Arch Function for Adaptive Multi-Finger Prosthetic Hand

Although arch motions of the palm substantially contribute to frequent hand grasping, they are usually neglected in the development of prosthetic hands which focuses on digit movements. We designed the arch function for its implementation on an adaptive multi-finger prosthetic hand. The digits from the developed hand can perform adaptive grasping, and two carpometacarpal joints enable the palm of the prosthetic hand to form an arch with the thumb. Moreover, the arch posture can be passively released, mimicking the human hand switching between sphere and medium wrap grasps according to the situation. Other requirements such as weight, cost, and size limitations for hand prostheses were also considered. As a result, we only used three actuators fully embedded in the palm through a novel tendon-driven transmission. Although the prosthetic hand is almost the same size of an adult hand, it weighs only 146 g and can perform 70% of the 10 most frequent grasps.
