Innovative Real-Time Flow Sensor Using Detergent-Free Complex Emulsions with Dual-Emissive Semi-Perfluoroalkyl Substituted Α-Cyanostilbene

In this study, the potential of complex emulsions is investigated as transducers in sensing applications. Complex emulsions are stabilized without external detergents by developing a novel α-cyanostilbene substituted with PEG and semi-perfluoroalkyl chain (CNFCPEG). CNFCPEG exhibits unique variable emission properties depending on its aggregation state, allowing dual blue and green emissions in complex emulsions with hydrocarbon-in-fluorocarbon-in-water (H/F/W) morphology. The green excimer emissions result from the self-assembly of CNFCPEG at the fluorocarbon/water interface, while the blue emission observed is due to aggregation in the organic phase. A novel flow-injection method is developed by incorporating complex emulsions with CNFCPEG into multiple-well flow chips (MWFC). Iodine is successfully detected in a mobile aqueous solution by monitoring morphology changes. The findings demonstrate that self-stabilized complex emulsions with MWFC hold great promise for real-time sensing without costly instruments.

Indolocarbazoles with Sterically Unrestricted Electron-Accepting Anchors Showcasing Aggregation-Induced Thermally Activated Delayed Mechanoluminescence for Host-Free Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

We investigated the effects of sterically nonrestricted electron-accepting substituents of three isomeric indolocarbazole derivatives on their aggregation-induced emission enhancement, mechanochromic luminescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence. The compounds are potentially efficient emitters for host-free organic light-emitting diodes. The films of indolocarbazole derivatives exhibit emissions with wavelengths of fluorescence intensity maxima from 483 to 500 nm and photoluminescence quantum yields from 31 to 58%. The ionization potentials of the solid samples, measured by photoelectron emission spectrometry, are in the narrow range of 5.78-5.99 eV. The electron affinities of the solid samples are in the range of 2.99-3.19 eV. The layers of the derivatives show diverse charge-transporting properties with maximum hole mobility reaching 10-4 cm2/Vs at high electric fields. An organic light-emitting diode with a light-emitting layer of neat compound shows a turn-on voltage of 4.1 V, a maximum brightness of 24,800 cd/m2, a maximum current efficiency of 12.5 cd/A and an external quantum efficiency of ca. 4.8%. When the compounds are used as hosts, green electroluminescent devices with an external quantum efficiency of ca. 11% are obtained. The linking topology of the isomeric derivatives of indolo[2,3-a]carbazole and indolo[3,2-b]carbazole and the electron-accepting anchors influences their properties differently, such as aggregation-induced emission enhancement, mechanochromic luminescence, thermally activated delayed fluorescence, charge-transporting, and electroluminescent properties. The derivative indolo[3,2-b]carbazole displays good light-emitting properties, while the derivatives of indolo[2,3-a]carbazole show good hosting properties, which make them useful for application in electroluminescent devices.

Locking the GFP Fluorophore to Enhance Its Emission Intensity

The Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) and its analogues have been widely used as fluorescent biomarkers in cell biology. Yet, the chromophore responsible for the fluorescence of the GFP is not emissive when isolated in solution, outside the protein environment. The most accepted explanation is that the quenching of the fluorescence results from the rotation of the aryl-alkene bond and from the Z/E isomerization. Over the years, many efforts have been performed to block these torsional rotations, mimicking the environment inside the protein β-barrel, to restore the emission intensity. Molecule rigidification through chemical modifications or complexation, or through crystallization, is one of the strategies used. This review presents an overview of the strategies developed to achieve highly emissive GFP chromophore by hindering the torsional rotations.

Photosensitizer with High Efficiency Generated in Cells via Light-Induced Self-Oligomerization of 4,6-Dibromothieno[3,4-b]thiophene Compound Entailing a Triphenyl Phosphonium Group

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as an attractive alternative in cancer therapy, but therapeutic effects suffer from low photosensitizing efficiency and poor retention of photosensitizes in cancer cells. This paper reports the photosensitizers which show absorption and emission in the long-wavelength region and high photosensitizing efficiency can be formed in situ in cells from 4,6-dibromothieno[3,4-b]thiophene derivative (TT-5-P) after white light irradiation. The self-oligomerization of TT-5-P is uptaken in cells upon light irradiation-induced cell apoptosis simultaneously and efficiently. In addition, the formation of oligomers (TT-5-Ps) enhances the retention time in cells remarkably, which is advantageous for boosting the photodynamic therapy efficiency. Moreover, the selectivity toward tumor cells of TT-5-P can be improved obviously via the formation of complex of TT-5-P with albumin. This in situ photoinduced self-oligomerization strategy can be utilized to design effective biomaterials for long-term imaging and improved therapy.

Systematic Studies on the Effect of Fluorine Atoms in Fluorinated Tolanes on Their Photophysical Properties

In this study, we synthesized a series of fluorinated and non-fluorinated tolanes, in which one or more fluorine atoms were systematically introduced into one aromatic ring of a tolane scaffold, and systematically evaluated their photophysical properties. All the tolanes with or without fluorine substituents were found to have poor photoluminescence (PL) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions. On the other hand, in the crystalline state, non-fluorinated and fluorinated tolanes with one or four fluorine atoms were less emissive, whereas fluorinated tolanes with three or five fluorine atoms exhibited high PL efficiencies (Ф_PL) up to 0.51. X-ray crystallographic analyses of the emissive fluorinated tolanes revealed that the position of the fluorine substituent played a key role in achieving a high Ф_PL. Fluorine substituents at the ortho (2/6) and para (4) positions led to tight and rigid packing due to plural π–π stacking and/or hydrogen bonding interactions, resulting in enhanced Ф_PL caused by the suppression of non-radiative deactivation. Additionally, fluorinated tolanes with three fluorine atoms exhibited notable aggregation-induced PL emission enhancement in THF/water mixed solvents. This demonstrates that the PL characteristics of small PL materials can be tuned depending on the usage requirements.

Multicomponent Synthesis of Luminescent Iminoboronates

A family of iminoboronates was prepared through a one-pot multicomponent reaction, starting from boronic acid, anthranilic acid, and different salicylaldehydes. Their synthesis was straightforward and the complexes were obtained in good to excellent yields. Their photophysical properties were assessed in a diluted solution, and the complexes proved to be faintly luminescent. These chelates demonstrated remarkable Aggregation-Induced Emission Enhancement, which was rationalized using crystal structures.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Aggregation-Induced Emission Enhancement Controlled by Optical Manipulation

We present spatiotemporal control of aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) of a protonated tetraphenylethene derivative by optical manipulation. A single submicrometer-sized aggregate is initially confined by laser irradiation when its fluorescence is hardly detectable. The continuous irradiation of the formed aggregate leads to sudden and rapid growth, resulting in bright yellow fluorescence emission. The fluorescence intensity at the peak wavelength of 540 nm is tremendously enhanced with growth, meaning that AIEE is activated by optical manipulation. Amazingly, the switching on/off of the activation of AIEE is arbitrarily controlled by alternating the laser power. This result means that optical manipulation increases the local concentration, which overcomes the electrostatic repulsion between the protonated molecules, namely, optical manipulation changes the aggregate structure. The dynamics and mechanism in AIEE controlled by optical manipulation will be discussed from the viewpoint of molecular conformation and association depending on the laser power.

Aptamer-Based Fluorescent Biosensing of Adenosine Triphosphate and Cytochrome c via Aggregation-Induced Emission Enhancement on Novel Label-Free DNA-Capped Silver Nanoclusters/Graphene Oxide Nanohybrids

Four fluorescent DNA-stabilized fluorescent silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs) were designed and synthesized with differences in lengths of cytosine-rich DNA strand (as the stabilizing agent) and target-specific strand DNA aptamers for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and cytochrome c (Cyt c). After their nanohybrid formation with graphene oxide (GO), it was unexpectedly found that, depending on the composition of the base and length of the strand DNA aptamer, the fluorescence intensity of three of the nanohybrids significantly enhanced. Our experimental observations and quantum mechanical calculations provided an insight into the mechanisms underlying the behavior of DNA-AgNCs/GO nanohybrids. The enhanced fluorescence was found to be attributed to the aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIE) characteristic of the DNA-AgNCs adsorbed on the GO surface, as confirmed evidently by both fluorescence and transmission electron microscopies. The AIE is a result of hardness and oxidation properties of GO, which lead to enhanced argenophilic interaction and thus to increased Ag(I)-DNA complex shell aggregation. Consequently, two of the DNA-AgNCs/GO nanohybrids were successfully extended to construct highly selective, sensitive, label-free, and simple aptasensors for biosensing of ATP (LOD = 0.42 nM) and Cyt c (LOD = 2.3 nM) in lysed Escherichia coli DH5 α cells and mouse embryonic stem cells, respectively. These fundamental findings are expected to significantly influence the designing and engineering of new AgNCs/GO-based AIE biosensors.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Based Sensing Platform for Selective Detection of Zn2+ : Experimental and Theoretical Investigations

Fluorescent chemosensors with aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) emerge as promising tools in the field of sensing materials. Herein, we report the design, synthesis and applicability of a Schiff base chemosensor 1-(benzo[1,3]dioxol-4-ylmethylene-hydrazonomethyl)-naphthalen-2-ol (Hbdhn) of AIE characteristics that exhibits highly effective and selective response towards Zn²⁺ . The sensing effect of Hbdhn was evaluated by means of absorption/emission spectra and corresponding underlying photophysical mechanisms were proposed based on extensive quantum-chemical (TD)DFT calculations. The aggregated states in different DMSO/H₂ O ratios and in a presence of Zn²⁺ were examined by fluorescence lifetime measurements, dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy studies. The bioimaging abilities of Hbdhn were evaluated for Zn²⁺ in HepG2 cancer cells. The results demonstrate instant, stable in time and reproducible, colorimetric turn-on response with superb selectivity and sensitivity of Hbdhn towards Zn²⁺ , based on chelation enhanced fluorescence mechanism. AIEE improves further Hbdhn properties, leading to strong, long-lived fluorescence, with appearance of rod-like particles, in 90 % of water in DMSO and only 10 % of water in DMSO in the presence of Zn²⁺ . All these features combined with successful biomaging studies make Hbdhn one of the most promising candidate for practical applications among recently proposed related systems.

Fluorescent Light-up Probe for the Detection of Protein Aggregates

A fluorescent dye was decorated with water-soluble pyridinium groups in order to be applied in the detection of cyclodextrins or DNA. The dye displays an enhancement of its emission intensity when the internal rotations are restricted due to the formation of an inclusion complex with cyclodextrins or upon interaction with DNA. In vivo, the fluorescent probe can stain protein aggregates with a selectivity comparable to the widely used Proteostat®.

Highly Efficient Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Fully Solution-Processed Organic Multilayered Architecture: Impact of Terminal Substitution on Carbazole-Benzophenone Dendrimer and Interfacial Engineering

A series of second-generation carbazole-benzophenone dendrimer substituted by several functional groups at terminal positions (subG2B) was investigated toward a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter for nondoped emissive layer (EML) application in a solution-processed organic light-emitting diode (OLED). Substitution was found to dramatically alter the photophysical properties of the dendritic TADF emitters. The introduction of tert-butyl and phenyl group endows the subG2Bs with aggregation-induced emission enhancement character by suppression of internal conversion in singlet excited states. In the meantime, the introduction of a methoxy group resulted in aggregation-caused quenching character. The device performance of the OLED, where subG2B neat films were incorporated as nondoped EMLs, was found to be highly enhanced by adopting fully solution-processed organic multilayer architecture in comparison to the devices with a vacuum-deposited electron transporting layer (ETL), achieving a maximum external quantum efficiency of 17.0%. Such improvement was attributable to the improved carrier balance via intermixing at solution-processed EML/ETL interfaces. It was also found that the post-thermal annealing of the OLED at appropriate temperatures could be beneficial to enhance OLED performance by promoting the intermixing EML/ETL interface to some extent. Our findings emphasize the potential utility of dendritic TADF emitters in the solution-processed TADF-OLED and increase the importance to manipulate dendrimer/small molecule interfaces.

Organic Fluorescent Compounds that Display Efficient Aggregation-Induced Emission Enhancement and Intramolecular Charge Transfer

A series of symmetric sulfone-linked organic fluorescent compounds (1a⁻c) was synthesized and characterized. V-shaped 1a⁻c were designed as aggregate of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) processes. The 1a⁻c emitted intense blue violet lights in normal solvents. A large red shift of the emission wavelength and dramatic decrease of emission efficiency occurred with increasing solvent polarity. The 1a⁻c will function well as electron transport and blue light-emitting materials through theoretical calculations.

Stretchable and Thermally Stable Dual Emission Composite Films of On-Purpose Aggregated Copper Nanoclusters in Carboxylated Polyurethane for Remote White Light-Emitting Devices

Stretchable, mechanically stable films with thermally stable dual emission peaked in the blue and orange spectral range are fabricated by condensation and aging of carboxylated polyurethane in the presence of on-purpose aggregated copper nanoclusters. The aggregation of copper clusters leads to the enhancement of their emission in the orange, while polyurethane matrix contributes with the blue emission band, with an overall photoluminescence quantum yield of the films as high as 18%. Composite Cu nanoclusters/polyurethane films are sufficiently transparent over the visible spectral range and are absorbing in the UV range; more than 90% of their emission intensity is preserved after 10 times of cycle of stretch and recovery, as well as aging of up to 10 h at 90 °C, making them useful for optoelectronic devices. Remote white light-emitting devices (LEDs) have been fabricated by placing a down-conversion layer of composite Cu nanoclusters/polyurethane film separated through a silicone resin spacer from the UV LED chip, with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage color coordinates of (0.34, 0.29), and a high color rendering index of 87.

A Dual Anticancer Efficacy Molecule: A Selective Dark Cytotoxicity Photosensitizer

Unlike traditional binary nanostructures that construct chemotherapy drugs and photodynamic therapy photosensitizers, we introduce a molecule with a chemo-photodynamic dual therapy function. A water-soluble aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) fluorogen, NV-12P, was designed and synthesized based on asymmetric 1,6-disubstituted naphthalene and can generate particular reactive oxygen species to undergo type I photodynamic therapy under irradiation. Furthermore, this compound can specifically localize in mitochondria and, after biological evaluation, can cause mitochondrial dysfunction and potent cytotoxicity to cancer cells but not normal cells. We conclude that this compound is a potential dual-toxic efficacy molecule because it exhibits selective dark cytotoxicity and efficient photodamage in cancer cells. Additionally, we also supported the optimal combinational treatment course for the best chemo-phototherapy efficacy.
