Visualizing the Low-Energy Electronic Structure of Prototypical Hybrid Halide Perovskite through Clear Band Measurements

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) are a promising class of materials that rival conventional semiconductors in various optoelectronic applications. However, unraveling the precise nature of their low-energy electronic structures continues to pose a significant challenge, primarily due to the absence of clear band measurements. Here, we investigate the low-energy electronic structure of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI3) using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy combined with ab initio density functional theory. We successfully visualize the electronic structure of MAPI3 near the bulk valence band maximum by using a laboratory photon source (He Iα, 21.2 eV) at low temperature and explore its fundamental properties. The observed valence band exhibits a highly isotropic and parabolic band characterized by small effective masses of 0.20-0.21 me, without notable spectral signatures associated with a large polaron or the Rashba effect, subjects that are intensely debated in the literature. Concurrently, our spin-resolved measurements directly disprove the giant Rashba scenario previously suggested in a similar perovskite compound by establishing an upper limit for the Rashba parameter (αR) of 0.28 eV Å. Our results unveil the unusually complex nature of the low-energy electronic structure of OIHPs, thereby advancing our fundamental understanding of this important class of materials.

Electronic Band Engineering of Two-Dimensional Kagomé Polymers

Two-dimensional conjugated polymers (2DCPs) are an emerging class of materials that exhibit properties similar to graphene yet do not have the limitation of zero bandgap. On-surface synthesis provides exceptional control on the polymerization reaction, allowing tailoring properties by choosing suitable monomers. Heteroatom-substituted triangulene 2DCPs constitute a playing ground for such a design and are predicted to exhibit graphene-like band structures with high charge mobility and characteristic Dirac cones in conduction or valence states. However, measuring these properties experimentally is challenging and requires long-range-ordered polymers, preferably with an epitaxial relationship with the substrate. Here, we investigate the electronic properties of a mesoscale-ordered carbonyl-bridged triphenylamine 2DCP (P2TANGO) and demonstrate the presence of a Dirac cone by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, we measure the absolute energy position of the Dirac cone with respect to the vacuum level. We show that the bridging functionality of the triangulene (ether vs carbonyl) does not significantly perturb the band structure but strongly affects the positioning of the bands with respect to the Au(111) states and allows control of the ionization energy of the polymer. Our results provide proof of the controllable electronic properties of 2DCPs and bring us closer to their use in practical applications.

Width-dependent band gap of arm-chair graphene nanoribbons formed on vicinal SiC substrates by MBE

Formation and electronic states of graphene nanoribbons with arm-chair edges (AGNR) are studied on the SiC(0001) vicinal surfaces toward the [11-00] direction. The surface step and terrace structures of both 4H and 6H-SiC substrates are used as the growth templates of one-dimensional arrays of AGNRs, which are prepared using the carbon molecular beam epitaxy followed by hydrogen intercalation. A band gap is observed above theπ-band maximum by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) for the both samples. The average widths of the AGNRs are 6 and 10 nm, and the estimated average band gaps are 0.40 and 0.28 eV for the 4H- and 6H- substrates, respectively. A simple and phenomenological inverse relation between the energy gap and AGNR width works in the analyses of the ARPES data.

Controlling Spin-Orbit Coupling to Tailor Type-II Dirac Bands

NiTe₂, a type-II Dirac semimetal with a strongly tilted Dirac band, has been explored extensively to understand its intriguing topological properties. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we report that the strength of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in NiTe₂ can be tuned by Se substitution. This results in negative shifts of the bulk Dirac point (BDP) while preserving the type-II Dirac band. Indeed, combined studies using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy confirm that the BDP in the NiTe_2-xSe_x alloy moves from +0.1 eV (NiTe₂) to -0.3 eV (NiTeSe) depending on the Se concentrations, indicating the effective tunability of type-II Dirac Fermions. Our results demonstrate an approach to tailor the type-II Dirac band in NiTe₂ by controlling the SOC strength via chalcogen substitution. This approach can be applicable to different types of topological materials.

Beamline commissioning for microscopic measurements with ultraviolet and soft X-ray beam at the upgraded beamline BL-13B of the Photon Factory

Beamline 13 of the Photon Factory has been in operation since 2010 as a vacuum ultraviolet and soft X-ray undulator beamline for X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments. The beamline and the end-station at branch B have been recently upgraded, enabling microscopic XPS, XAS, and ARPES measurements to be performed. In 2015, a planar undulator insertion device was replaced with an APPLE-II (advanced planar polarized light emitter II) undulator. This replacement allows use of linear, circular, and elliptical polarized light between 48 and 2000 eV with photon intensities of 10⁹-10¹³ photons s^-1. For microscopic measurements, a toroidal post-mirror was renewed to have more focused beam with profile sizes of 78 µm (horizontal) × 15 µm (vertical) and 84 µm × 11 µm at photon energies of 100 and 400 eV, respectively. A high-precision sample manipulator composed of an XYZ translator, a rotary feedthrough, and a newly developed goniometer, which is essential for microscopic measurements, has been used to control a sample specimen in six degrees of freedom, i.e. translation in the X, Y, and Z directions and rotation in the polar, azimuthal, and tilt directions. To demonstrate the performance of the focused beams, one- and two-dimensional XPS and XAS scan measurements of a copper grid have been performed. It was indicated from analysis of XPS and XAS intensity maps that the actual spatial resolution can be determined by the beam size.

Molecular Approach for Engineering Interfacial Interactions in Magnetic/Topological Insulator Heterostructures

Controlling interfacial interactions in magnetic/topological insulator heterostructures is a major challenge for the emergence of novel spin-dependent electronic phenomena. As for any rational design of heterostructures that rely on proximity effects, one should ideally retain the overall properties of each component while tuning interactions at the interface. However, in most inorganic interfaces, interactions are too strong, consequently perturbing, and even quenching, both the magnetic moment and the topological surface states at each side of the interface. Here, we show that these properties can be preserved using ligand chemistry to tune the interaction of magnetic ions with the surface states. By depositing Co-based porphyrin and phthalocyanine monolayers on the surface of Bi₂Te₃ thin films, robust interfaces are formed that preserve undoped topological surface states as well as the pristine magnetic moment of the divalent Co ions. The selected ligands allow us to tune the interfacial hybridization within this weak interaction regime. These results, which are in stark contrast with the observed suppression of the surface state at the first quintuple layer of Bi₂Se₃ induced by the interaction with Co phthalocyanines, demonstrate the capability of planar metal-organic molecules to span interactions from the strong to the weak limit.

Realization of a Strained Atomic Wire Superlattice

A superlattice of strained Au-Si atomic wires is successfully fabricated on a Si surface. Au atoms are known to incorporate into the stepped Si(111) surface to form a Au-Si atomic wire array with both one-dimensional (1D) metallic and antiferromagnetic atomic chains. At a reduced density of Au, we find a regular array of Au-Si wires in alternation with pristine Si nanoterraces. Pristine Si nanoterraces impose a strain on the neighboring Au-Si wires, which modifies both the band structure of metallic chains and the magnetic property of spin chains. This is an ultimate 1D version of a strained-layer superlattice of semiconductors, defining a direction toward the fine engineering of self-assembled atomic-scale wires.

Soft-X-ray ARPES facility at the ADRESS beamline of the SLS: concepts, technical realisation and scientific applications

Soft-X-ray angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) with photon energies around 1 keV combines the momentum space resolution with increasing probing depth. The concepts and technical realisation of the new soft-X-ray ARPES endstation at the ADRESS beamline of SLS are described. The experimental geometry of the endstation is characterized by grazing X-ray incidence on the sample to increase the photoyield and vertical orientation of the measurement plane. The vacuum chambers adopt a radial layout allowing most efficient sample transfer. High accuracy of the angular resolution is ensured by alignment strategies focused on precise matching of the X-ray beam and optical axis of the analyzer. The high photon flux of up to 10(13) photons s(-1) (0.01% bandwidth)(-1) delivered by the beamline combined with the optimized experimental geometry break through the dramatic loss of the valence band photoexcitation cross section at soft-X-ray energies. ARPES images with energy resolution up to a few tens of meV are typically acquired on the time scale of minutes. A few application examples illustrate the power of our advanced soft-X-ray ARPES instrumentation to explore the electronic structure of bulk crystals with resolution in three-dimensional momentum, access buried heterostructures and study elemental composition of the valence states using resonant excitation.

High-resolution soft X-ray beamline ADRESS at the Swiss Light Source for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopies

The concepts and technical realisation of the high-resolution soft X-ray beamline ADRESS operating in the energy range from 300 to 1600 eV and intended for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) are described. The photon source is an undulator of novel fixed-gap design where longitudinal movement of permanent magnetic arrays controls not only the light polarization (including circular and 0-180 degrees rotatable linear polarizations) but also the energy without changing the gap. The beamline optics is based on the well established scheme of plane-grating monochromator operating in collimated light. The ultimate resolving power E/DeltaE is above 33000 at 1 keV photon energy. The choice of blazed versus lamellar gratings and optimization of their profile parameters is described. Owing to glancing angles on the mirrors as well as optimized groove densities and profiles of the gratings, the beamline is capable of delivering high photon flux up to 1 x 10(13) photons s(-1) (0.01% BW)(-1) at 1 keV. Ellipsoidal refocusing optics used for the RIXS endstation demagnifies the vertical spot size down to 4 microm, which allows slitless operation and thus maximal transmission of the high-resolution RIXS spectrometer delivering E/DeltaE > 11000 at 1 keV photon energy. Apart from the beamline optics, an overview of the control system is given, the diagnostics and software tools are described, and strategies used for the optical alignment are discussed. An introduction to the concepts and instrumental realisation of the ARPES and RIXS endstations is given.
