Simulated Drift of Dicamba and Glyphosate on Coffee Crop

Weed management in areas adjacent to coffee plantations makes herbicide drift a constant concern, especially with the use of nonselective products such as dicamba. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytotoxic effects of the herbicide dicamba alone and mixed with glyphosate as a result of simulated drift in a coffee-producing area. The study was conducted in duplicate at two different coffee cherry development stages. The study was performed with a randomized block design and a 2 × 5 + 1 factorial scheme with four replications using two herbicide spray solutions (dicamba and dicamba + glyphosate) and five low doses (0.25; 1; 5; 10; and 20%). Additionally, a control treatment without herbicide application was also employed. In this study, we evaluated the phytotoxic damage and biometric and productive parameters. Visual damages were observed with the use of dicamba and dicamba + glyphosate doses reduced by 0.25% to 5% in the first days after application. The main symptoms were new leaf epinasty, changes in the internodal distance, and plagiotropic branch curvature. Low doses led to reduced plant height and branch length. The treatments did not reduce productivity and performance but altered the physical classifications of grains.

Soybean dose-response to 2,4-D and dicamba at vegetative and reproductive growth stages

BACKGROUND

Field experiments were conducted across multiple sites in 2012 and 2013 to describe sensitivity of soybean to 2,4-D (six doses) and dicamba (seven doses) at V3 and R1 growth stages. Further experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions in 2017 and 2018 to compare soybean response to several dicamba herbicides across a broader range of doses than those tested in the field.

RESULTS

Soybean yield loss was 6.1-fold greater from 2,4-D exposure at V3 compared to R1 and 1.4 times greater from dicamba exposure at R1 than at V3. In V3 exposures, soybean was 15.4 times more sensitive to dicamba than 2,4-D and 134.4-fold more sensitive to dicamba when exposed at R1. Plant injury and height correlations to grain yield resulted in coefficients ranging from 0.65 to 0.91. In greenhouse experiments, five dicamba products were tested at up to 19 doses and as low as 0.002 g ae ha-1 (3.6 × 10-6 % of maximum single use-rate); however, no differences were observed among formulations used in dicamba-resistant crops versus traditional formulations. A no observable effects dose was not identified due to responses observed even at the lowest doses tested, although hormesis effects were observed in plant height.

CONCLUSION

These data suggest that the sensitivity of soybean to dicamba is much greater than what has previously been reported. However, as has been indicated by previous work, that injury does not always result in yield loss. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Design, synthesis and mode of action of novel 3-chloro-6-pyrazolyl picolinate derivatives as herbicide candidates

BACKGROUND

Picolinate/picolinic acid compounds are an important class of synthetic auxin herbicides. To explore the herbicidal activity of 6-pyrazolyl picolinate compounds, a series of 3-chloro-6-pyrazolyl-picolinate derivatives was designed and synthesized.

RESULTS

Twenty-five 3-chloro-6-pyrazolyl-picolinate derivatives synthesized were tested for herbicidal activity and the IC₅₀ value of compound c5 to the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana root was 27 times lower than that of the commercial herbicide clopyralid. Compound c5 displayed better post-emergence herbicidal activity and broader (Picloram, Clopyralid, Aminopyralid) herbicidal spectrum at a dosage of 400 g ha^-1 in comparison with clopyralid; it also was safe to wheat and maize at this dosage. Arabidopsis thaliana phenotypes and expression of auxin-response genes demonstrated that compound c5 might be a novel auxin-type herbicide. Molecular docking analyses revealed that compound c5 had stronger binding ability to receptor AFB5 (auxin signaling F-box protein 5) than clopyralid.

CONCLUSION

These 6-pyrazolyl picolinate compounds could be used as potential lead structures for the discovery of a novel synthetic auxin herbicide. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Auxin herbicide action: lifting the veil step by step

Over decades, the so-called growth regulator or auxin herbicides had resisted all efforts to elucidate their molecular interactions and the biochemical and physiological basis of their phytotoxicity.1-3 The identification and crystal structure analysis of receptors for auxin perception4-8 and the discovery of a new hormone interaction in signalling between auxin, ethylene and the up-regulation of 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) in abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis,9 leading to ABA accumulation,3 are long steps towards understanding of auxin herbicide action in dicot plants.
