Is there silicon in flowers and what does it tell us?

The emergence of flowers marked an important development in plant evolution. Flowers in many species evolved to attract animal pollinators to increase fertilisation chances. In leaves, silicon (Si) discourages herbivores, for example by wearing down mouthparts. Flowers are essentially modified leaves and hence may also have the capacity to accumulate Si. If Si in flowers discourages animal visitors as it does in leaves, Si accumulation may be disadvantageous for pollination. Whether flowers accumulate Si, and what the implications may be, was not known for many species. We analysed leaves and flowers of different taxa, separated into their different anatomical parts. Flowers mostly have low Si concentrations in all parts (mean ± SE of BSi in mg g-1 was 0.22 ± 0.04 in petals, 0.59 ± 0.24 in sepals, 0.14 ± 0.03 in stamens, 0.15 ± 0.04 in styles and stigmas and 0.37 ± 0.19 in ovaries for a subset of 56 species). In most cases, less Si was accumulated in flowers than in leaves (mean ± SE of BSi in mg g-1 was 1.51 ± 0.55 in whole flowers vs. 2.97 ± 0.57 in leaves in 104 species) though intriguing exceptions are found, with some species accumulating more Si in flowers than leaves. The large variation in concentration among flowers across the taxa examined, with a particularly high concentration in grass inflorescences, tantalisingly suggests differences in the use of Si for flowers across plant groups. We conclude that the study of the functions of Si for flowers warrants more attention, with pollination strategy a potential contributing factor.

Growth and Performance of Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.) Genotypes under Various Irrigation Regimes with and without Biogenic Silica Amendment in Arid Southwest US

Guar is a potential crop that can be grown as a forage or as a seed crop in arid to semi-arid regions due to its low water requirements and tolerance to heat. Optimizing irrigation water use is important for making alternative crops such as guar a sustainable option. Amendments such as biogenic silica, a sedimentary rock from a biogenic source such as fossils, may help plants tolerate water stress due to reduced irrigation. The objective of the current study was to evaluate seed yield and attribute components and agronomic and physiological parameters for four guar genotypes (Matador, Kinman, Lewis, and NMSU 15-G1) under five drip irrigation regimes (I₁-normal irrigation, I₂-no irrigation at 75% pod formation, I₃-no irrigation at 50% and 75% pod formation, I₄-terminate irrigation at flowering, and I₅-terminate irrigation at flowering + biogenic silica amendment) at Las Cruces in southern New Mexico, USA, from 2016 to 2018. On average, the I₁ irrigation regime produced the highest guar seed yield (2715 kg ha^-1) followed by I₅ (2469 kg ha^-1) from 2016 to 2018. As compared to the I₁ regime, the I₂ and I₃ regimes resulted in a 20.8% and 23.4% decline in guar seed yield, respectively, on average from 2016 to 2018. The results suggest that the addition of biogenic silica might help to improve guar seed yield under reduced irrigation conditions and can produce comparable yields with an average of 300 mm of irrigation during the growing season in the southern New Mexico region of the Southwest US.

Comparative Study of Commercial Silica and Sol-Gel-Derived Porous Silica from Cornhusk for Low-Temperature Catalytic Methane Combustion

The synthesis and characterization of sol-gel-derived cornhusk support for low-temperature catalytic methane combustion (LTCMC) were investigated in this study. The prepared cornhusk support was impregnated with palladium and cerium oxide (Pd/CeO₂) via the classical incipient wetness method. The resulting catalyst was characterized using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), N₂ physisorption (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H₂-TPR). The catalytic performance of the Pd/CeO₂/CHSiO₂ catalyst was evaluated for methane combustion in the temperature range of 150-600 °C using a temperature-controlled catalytic flow reactor, and its performance was compared with a commercial catalyst. The results showed that the Pd/CeO₂ dispersed on SiO₂ from the cornhusk ash support (Pd/CeO₂/CHSiO₂) catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity for methane combustion, with a conversion of 50% at 394 °C compared with 593 °C for the commercial silica catalyst (Pd/CeO₂/commercial). Moreover, the Pd/CeO₂/CHSiO₂ catalyst displayed better catalytic stability after 10 h on stream, with a 7% marginal loss in catalytic activity compared with 11% recorded for the Pd/CeO₂/commercial catalyst. The N₂ physisorption and H₂-TPR results indicated that the cornhusk SiO₂ support possessed a higher surface area and strong reducibility than the synthesized commercial catalyst, contributing to the enhanced catalytic activity of the Pd/CeO₂/SiO₂ catalyst. Overall, the SiO₂ generated from cornhusk ash exhibited promising potential as a low-cost and environmentally friendly support for LTCMC catalysts.

Multi-Element Composition of Diatom Chaetoceros spp. from Natural Phytoplankton Assemblages of the Russian Arctic Seas

Simple Summary

Despite the long history of studying the elemental composition of phytoplankton and its individual ecological and systematic groups or specific algae species, the global dataset is far from completed. Our original research aims to study the elemental composition of a certain taxonomic group of marine diatoms, whose representatives make a significant contribution to primary production in the Arctic Ocean. The data on the chemical composition of diatom microalgae are discussed concerning their role in the global biogeochemical circulation of elements in the ocean. In particular, the obtained data make a prominent input to the study of the multi-element composition of marine diatom species, namely Chaetoceros spp., inhabiting the shelf seas of the Arctic Ocean. These data may be used as a basis for the cultivation of marine diatom strains for obtaining commercially promising producers of biogenic silica or valuable biological products that can be used as raw materials in the production of feed and nutrition for agriculture and aquaculture.

Abstract

Data on the elemental composition of the diatom Chaetoceros spp. from natural phytoplankton communities of Arctic marine ecosystems are presented for the first time. Samples were collected during the 69th cruise (22 August–26 September 2017) of the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in the Kara, Laptev, and East Siberian Seas. The multi-element composition of the diatom microalgae was studied by ICP-AES and ICP-MS methods. The contents of major (Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, K and Ca), trace (Li, Be, B, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ba, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi, Th and U) and rare earth (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) elements varied greatly, which was probably associated with the peculiarities of the functional state and mineral nutrition of phytoplankton in the autumn period. Biogenic silicon was the dominant component of the chemical composition of Chaetoceros spp., averaging 19.10 ± 0.58% of dry weight (DW). Other significant macronutrients were alkaline (Na and K) and alkaline earth (Ca and Mg) metals as well as biogenic (S and P) and essential (Al and Fe) elements. Their total contents varied from 1.26 to 2.72% DW, averaging 2.07 ± 0.43% DW. The Al:Si ratio for natural assemblages of Chaetoceros spp. of the shelf seas of the Arctic Ocean was 5.8 × 10⁻³. The total concentrations of trace and rare earth elements on average were 654.42 ± 120.07 and 4.14 ± 1.37 μg g⁻¹ DW, respectively. We summarize the scarce data on the average chemical composition of marine and oceanic phytoplankton and discuss the limitations and approaches of such studies. We conclude on the lack of data and the need for further targeted studies on this issue.

Natural Rubber Biocomposites Filled with Phyto-Ashes Rich in Biogenic Silica Obtained from Wheat Straw and Field Horsetail

The rich structural hierarchy of plants permits the obtainment of porous structures which can be expected to show improved performances in fields such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, catalysis, drug delivery, adsorption, separation or sensors in various chemical reactions. On the other hand, porous materials can be an active additive to polymer composites. The aim of the study was to obtain natural rubber (NR) biocomposites with the addition of phyto-ashes reach in biogenic silica from plant biomass. For the production of bioadditives, a two-stage method of high-temperature heat treatment was used, preceded by acid hydrolysis of plant tissues in the form of horsetail and wheat straw. Hydrolysis was performed with hydrochloric and citric acid. The efficiency of the processes and their influence on the elemental composition, surface morphology, thermal stability and particle size of the fillers were determined. Modified bioadditives were introduced into the elastomer matrix and their processing properties, as well as the vulcanization characteristics, were examined. Static mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break, stress at 100%, 200% and 300% elongation), dynamic-mechanical analysis and the influence of additives on the cross-link density of the composites were determined. Structural analysis was performed using scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the field horsetail and cereal straw are plants rich in many valuable chemical compounds, especially silica. The specific and appropriate treatment of these plants can lead to bioadditives that significantly affect the properties of rubber materials.

Methane Production Rate during Anoxic Litter Decomposition Depends on Si Mass Fractions, Nutrient Stoichiometry, and Carbon Quality

While Si influences nutrient stoichiometry and decomposition of graminoid litter, it is still unclear how Si influences anoxic litter decomposition and CH₄ formation in graminoid dominated fen peatlands. First, Eriophorum vaginatum plants were grown under different Si and P availabilities, then shoots and roots were characterized regarding their proportions of C, Si, N and P and regarding C quality. Subsequently the Eriophorum shoots were subjected to anoxic decomposition. We hypothesized; that (I) litter grown under high Si availability would show a higher Si but lower nutrient mass fractions and a lower share of recalcitrant carbon moieties; (II) high-Si litter would show higher CH₄ and CO₂ production rates during anoxic decomposition; (III) methanogenesis would occur earlier in less recalcitrant high-Si litter, compared to low-Si litter. We found a higher Si mass fraction that coincides with a general decrease in C and N mass fractions and decreased share of recalcitrant organic moieties. For high-Si litter, the CH₄ production rate was higher, but there was no long-term influence on the CO₂ production rate. More labile high-Si litter and a differential response in nutrient stoichiometry led to faster onset of methanogenesis. This may have important implications for our understanding of anaerobic carbon turnover in graminoid-rich fens.

Elevated pH Conditions Associated With Microcystis spp. Blooms Decrease Viability of the Cultured Diatom Fragilaria crotonensis and Natural Diatoms in Lake Erie

Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (CyanoHABs) commonly increase water column pH to alkaline levels ≥9.2, and to as high as 11. This elevated pH has been suggested to confer a competitive advantage to cyanobacteria such as Microcystis aeruginosa. Yet, there is limited information regarding the restrictive effects bloom-induced pH levels may impose on this cyanobacterium’s competitors. Due to the pH-dependency of biosilicification processes, diatoms (which seasonally both precede and proceed Microcystis blooms in many fresh waters) may be unable to synthesize frustules at these pH levels. We assessed the effects of pH on the ecologically relevant diatom Fragilaria crotonensis in vitro, and on a Lake Erie diatom community in situ. In vitro assays revealed F. crotonensis monocultures exhibited lower growth rates and abundances when cultivated at a starting pH of 9.2 in comparison to pH 7.7. The suppressed growth trends in F. crotonensis were exacerbated when co-cultured with M. aeruginosa at pH conditions and cell densities that simulated a cyanobacteria bloom. Estimates demonstrated a significant decrease in silica (Si) deposition at alkaline pH in both in vitro F. crotonensis cultures and in situ Lake Erie diatom assemblages, after as little as 48 h of alkaline pH-exposure. These observations indicate elevated pH negatively affected growth rate and diatom silica deposition; in total providing a competitive disadvantage for diatoms. Our observations demonstrate pH likely plays a significant role in bloom succession, creating a potential to prolong summer Microcystis blooms and constrain diatom fall resurgence.

Highly Hierarchical Fibrillar Biogenic Silica with Mesoporous Structure Derived from the Perennial Plant Equisetum Fluviatile

A new discovery of highly hierarchical fibrillar biogenic silica with mesoporous structure derived from the perennial plant Equisetum fluviatile was made. By removing the organic compounds through chemical and heat treatment, the biogenic silica skeleton can largely retained the original highly hierarchical structure of the plant stems. Infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, and small-angle X-ray scattering, as well as nitrogen sorption analysis, were employed to characterize the crystalline phases, nanostructure, and porosity of the resulting material. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy investigation reveal that the biogenic silica are fibers with diameters of about 120-150 μm and lengths of more than a few centimeters. These fibers consist of smaller fasciculus with diameters of about 5-15 μm that are composed of three levels of particles with mass and surface fractal characteristics: primary particles on the order of 3-5 nm, secondary particles on the order of 9-12 nm, and tertiary particles on the order of 90-120 nm in size. It is also shown that the biogenic silica have mesoporous structure with an average pore size of 4-6 nm and a specific surface of 100-300 m²/g. Heat treatment at high temperature and residual K⁺ significantly affects the characteristics of the mesoporous structure of the biogenic silica, although it has little effect on the surface fractal structure of the secondary particles.

Biogenic Silica and Organic Carbon Records in Zhoushan Coastal Sea over the Past One Hundred Years and Their Environmental Indications

The influence of terrestrial and marine input has dramatically changed eutrophication in coastal seas over the past 100 years. In this study, Zhoushan coastal sea (ZCS) is taken as a study area. We studied ZCS as it is a sink of the temporal and spatial variation of primary productivity, dominant species of algae, and the variation of provenance in this area over the past 100 years. We performed analysis using three sediment cores and the carbon and silicon deposition records. The analysis results demonstrate that: (1) The primary productivity in the northern area of the ZCS close to the Yangtze Estuary was the highest comparatively, but it declined slightly before 2010. The primary productivity in the southern area had an increasing trend over the past 100 years. The value of total organic carbon (TOC) in the northern area was relatively high, with an average value of 0.532% over the past 100 years, with a decreasing trend in recent years. On the contrary, TOC in the southern area was relatively low, but it was increased dramatically after 1995. (2) Diatom might play an important role in the variations. The biogenic silica (BSi) and TOC in the northern area showed a synchronous declining trend, while the BSi/TOC ratio did not change significantly. This indicates the algae population structure in this area was relatively stable over the past 100 years. The BSi/TOC ratio decreased continuously in the southern area, indicating that the dominance of diatoms was decreasing continuously. (3) The variation of diatom dominance in this area might have a great relationship with the change of nutrients' provenance. A mean value of stable carbon isotope (δ¹³C) in the north of Zhoushan was -23.46‱, indicating that the terrestrial-source input was the highest. (4) The change of provenance in the study area was quite different. This illustrates that the terrestrial input impacted the largest area of ZCS while marine input became dominant in the offshore area.

Visualising Silicon in Plants: Histochemistry, Silica Sculptures and Elemental Imaging

Silicon is a non-essential element for plants and is available in biota as silicic acid. Its presence has been associated with a general improvement of plant vigour and response to exogenous stresses. Plants accumulate silicon in their tissues as amorphous silica and cell walls are preferential sites. While several papers have been published on the mitigatory effects that silicon has on plants under stress, there has been less research on imaging silicon in plant tissues. Imaging offers important complementary results to molecular data, since it provides spatial information. Herein, the focus is on histochemistry coupled to optical microscopy, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy of microwave acid extracted plant silica, techniques based on particle-induced X-ray emission, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and mass spectrometry imaging (NanoSIMS). Sample preparation procedures will not be discussed in detail, as several reviews have already treated this subject extensively. We focus instead on the information that each technique provides by offering, for each imaging approach, examples from both silicifiers (giant horsetail and rice) and non-accumulators (Cannabis sativa L.).

ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy, a New Non-Destructive Approach for the Quantitative Determination of Biogenic Silica in Marine Sediments

Biogenic silica is the major component of the external skeleton of marine micro-organisms, such as diatoms, which, after the organisms death, settle down onto the seabed. These micro-organisms are involved in the CO₂ cycle because they remove it from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. The biogenic silica content in marine sediments, therefore, is an indicator of primary productivity in present and past epochs, which is useful to study the CO₂ trends. Quantification of biosilica in sediments is traditionally carried out by wet chemistry followed by spectrophotometry, a time-consuming analytical method that, besides being destructive, is affected by a strong risk of analytical biases owing to the dissolution of other silicatic components in the mineral matrix. In the present work, the biosilica content was directly evaluated in sediment samples, without chemically altering them, by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Quantification was performed by combining the multivariate standard addition method (MSAM) with the net analyte signal (NAS) procedure to solve the strong matrix effect of sediment samples. Twenty-one sediment samples from a sediment core and one reference standard sample were analyzed, and the results (extrapolated concentrations) were found to be comparable to those obtained by the traditional wet method, thus demonstrating the feasibility of the ATR-FTIR-MSAM-NAS approach as an alternative method for the quantification of biosilica. Future developments will cover in depth investigation on biosilica from other biogenic sources, the extension of the method to sediments of other provenance, and the use higher resolution IR spectrometers.

Low-Cost Microwave-Assisted Partial Pseudomorphic Transformation of Biogenic Silica

This work introduces a cost and time efficient procedure to specifically increase mesopore volume and specific surface area of biogenic silica (specific surface area: 147 m² g⁻¹ and mesopore volume: 0.23 cm³ g⁻¹) to make it suitable for applications in adsorption or as catalyst support. The target values were a specific surface area of ~500 m² g⁻¹ and a mesopore volume of ~0.40–0.50 cm³ g⁻¹ as these values are industrially relevant and are reached by potential concurring products such as precipitated silica, silica gel, and fumed silica. The applied process of partial pseudomorphic transformation was carried out as a single reaction step in a microwave reactor instead of commonly used convective heating. In addition, the conventionally used surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) was substituted by the low-cost surfactant (Arquad® 16-29, cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTACl) aqueous solution). The influence of microwave heating, type of surfactant as well as the concentration of NaOH and CTACl on the textural and structural properties of the modified biogenic silica was investigated using nitrogen adsorption as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that the textural parameters of the modified biogenic silica can be exactly controlled by the amount of NaOH in the reaction solution. By variation of the NaOH concentration, specific surface areas in the range of 215–1,001 m² g⁻¹ and mesopore volumes of 0.25–0.56 cm³ g⁻¹ were achieved after reaction at 393 K for 10 min. The presented microwave route using the low-cost surfactant solution decreases the reaction time by 99% and as shown in an example for German prices, lowers the costs for the surfactant by 76–99%.

Is callose required for silicification in plants?

The cell wall polymer callose catalyses the formation of silica in vitro and is heavily implicated in biological silicification in Equisetum (horsetail) and Arabidopsis (thale cress) in vivo. Callose, a β-1,3-glucan, is an ideal partner for silicification, because its amorphous structure and ephemeral nature provide suitable microenvironments to support the condensation of silicic acid into silica. Herein, using scanning electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and fluorescence, we provide further evidence of the cooperative nature of callose and silica in biological silicification in rice, an important crop plant and known silica accumulator. These new data along with recently published research enable us to propose a model to describe the intracellular events that together determine callose-driven biological silicification.

[Influences of tide on silicon and nitrogen contents in soil and porewater in the Minjiang Ri-ver estuary, Southeast China]

Taking Shanyuntan wetland in the Minjiang River estuary as test object, the dissolved silicates (DSi) and inorganic nitrogen contents in porewater and the biogenic silica (BSi) and total nitrogen contents in surface soil of the Phragmites australis wetland, Cyperus malaccensis wetland and Spartina alterniflora wetland were measured in October 2014 (spring tide month) and April 2015 (neap tide month), respectively, to illuminate the influence of tide on silicon and nitrogen contents in soil and porewater of estuarine wetland. Results showed that the DSi content in porewater and the BSi content in surface soil in spring tide month were slightly higher than those in neap tide month, with the highest being observed on neap tide day and the lowest occurring on spring tide day. In contrast, the BSi content in surface soil on spring tide day showed an opposite trend with that on neap tide day. The contents of NH₄⁺-N and NO₃^--N in porewater of different wetland soils in spring tide month were higher than those in neap tide month, while the content of NH₄⁺-N on spring tide day was significantly higher than that on neap tide day (P<0.05). The study found that hydrological conditions such as flooding duration and drying-wetting alternation caused by tide had great influences on silicon and nitrogen contents in porewater and surface soil, and vegetation types also showed great influences on their distributions in intertidal wetland of the Minjiang River estuary.

New insight into silica deposition in horsetail (Equisetum arvense)

BACKGROUND

The horsetails (Equisetum sp) are known biosilicifiers though the mechanism underlying silica deposition in these plants remains largely unknown. Tissue extracts from horsetails grown hydroponically and also collected from the wild were acid-digested in a microwave oven and their silica 'skeletons' visualised using the fluor, PDMPO, and fluorescence microscopy.

RESULTS

Silica deposits were observed in all plant regions from the rhizome through to the stem, leaf and spores. Numerous structures were silicified including cell walls, cell plates, plasmodesmata, and guard cells and stomata at varying stages of differentiation. All of the major sites of silica deposition in horsetail mimicked sites and structures where the hemicellulose, callose is known to be found and these serendipitous observations of the coincidence of silica and callose raised the possibility that callose might be templating silica deposition in horsetail. Hydroponic culture of horsetail in the absence of silicic acid resulted in normal healthy plants which, following acid digestion, showed no deposition of silica anywhere in their tissues. To test the hypothesis that callose might be templating silica deposition in horsetail commercially available callose was mixed with undersaturated and saturated solutions of silicic acid and the formation of silica was demonstrated by fluorimetry and fluorescence microscopy.

CONCLUSIONS

The initiation of silica formation by callose is the first example whereby any biomolecule has been shown to induce, as compared to catalyse, the formation of silica in an undersaturated solution of silicic acid. This novel discovery allowed us to speculate that callose and its associated biochemical machinery could be a missing link in our understanding of biosilicification.
