Pollutant removal in an experimental bioretention cell situated in a northern Chinese sponge city

To assess the viability and effectiveness of bioretention cell in enhancing rainwater resource utilization within sponge cities, this study employs field monitoring, laboratory testing, and statistical analysis to evaluate the water purification capabilities of bioretention cell. Findings indicate a marked purification impact on surface runoff, with removal efficiencies of 59.81% for suspended solids (SS), 39.01% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 37.53% for ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and 30.49% for total phosphorus (TP). The treated water largely complies with rainwater reuse guidelines and tertiary sewage discharge standards. Notably, while previous research in China has emphasized water volume control in sponge city infrastructures, less attention has been given to the qualitative aspects and field-based evaluations. This research not only fills that gap but also offers valuable insights and practical implications for bioretention cell integration into sponge city development. Moreover, the methodology and outcomes of this study serve as a benchmark for future sponge city project assessments, offering guidance to relevant authorities.

Stormwater Bioretention Cells Are Not an Effective Treatment for Persistent and Mobile Organic Compounds (PMOCs)

Bioretention cells are a stormwater management technology intended to reduce the quantity of water entering receiving bodies. They are also used to reduce contaminant releases, but their performance is unclear for hydrophilic persistent and mobile organic compounds (PMOCs). We developed a novel eight-compartment one-dimensional (1D) multimedia model of a bioretention cell ("Bioretention Blues") and applied it to a spike and recovery experiment conducted on a system near Toronto, Canada, involving PMOC benzotriazole and four organophosphate esters (OPEs). Compounds with (log D_OC) (organic carbon-water distribution coefficients) < ∼2.7 advected through the system, resulting in infiltration or underdrain flow. Compounds with log D_OC > 3.8 were mostly sorbed to the soil, where subsequent fate depended on transformation. For compounds with 2.7 ≤ log D_OC ≤ 3.8, sorption was sensitive to event size and compound-specific diffusion parameters, with more sorption expected for smaller rain events and for compounds with larger diffusion coefficients. Volatilization losses were minimal for all compounds tested. Direct uptake by vegetation also played a negligible role regardless of the compounds' physicochemical properties. Nonetheless, model simulations showed that vegetation could play a role by increasing transpiration, thereby increasing sorption to the bioretention soil and reducing PMOC release. Model results suggest design modifications to bioretention cells.

Biological nitrogen removal from stormwater in bioretention cells: a critical review

Excess nitrogen in stormwater degrades surface water quality via eutrophication and related processes. Bioretention has been recognized as a highly effective low-impact development (LID) technology for the management of high runoff volumes and reduction of nitrogen (N) pollutants through various mechanisms. This paper provides a comprehensive and critical review of recent developments on the biological N removal processes occurring in bioretention systems. The key plant- and microbe-mediated N transformation processes include assimilation (N uptake by plants and microbes), nitrification, denitrification, and anammox (anaerobic ammonia oxidation), but denitrification is the major pathway of permanent N removal. Overall, both laboratory- and field-scale bioretention systems have demonstrated promising N removal performance (TN: >70%). The phyla Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria are the most abundant microbial communities found to be enriched in biofilter media. Furthermore, the denitrifying communities contain several functional genes (e.g., nirK/nirS, and nosZ), and their concentrations increase near the surface of media depth. The N removal effectiveness of bioretention systems is largely impacted by the hydraulics and environmental factors. When a bioretention system operates at: low hydraulic/N loading rate, containing a saturation zone, vegetated with native plants, having deeper and multilayer biofilter media with warm climate temperature and wet storm events periods, the N removal efficiency can be high. This review highlights shortcomings and current knowledge gaps in the area of total nitrogen removal using bioretention systems, as well as identifies future research directions on this topic.

[Water Quality and Three-Dimensional Fluorescence of Stormwater Runoff from Lined Bioretention Field Cells]

Bioretention cells have become one of the most popular devices in urban stormwater runoff management for their high efficiency in reducing runoff volume and pollution loads. However, bioretention cells are unstable in nutrient pollutant removal, as is verified by many cases, especially at low temperatures. Dissolved organic matters (DOMs) plays an important role in denitrification, but the three-dimensional fluorescence characteristics of stormwater runoff in bioretention field cells are poorly understood, so to improve the performance of bioretention cells in nutrient pollutants control, the authors determined that it was necessary to clarify the characteristics of three-dimensional fluorescence of stormwater runoff from bioretention cells and explain their relationship to water quality. To be applicable to urban landuse in mountainous cities, two field lined bioretention cells were constructed, and, from March to April in 2017, while temperatures were still low, water quality and three-dimensional fluorescence of stormwater runoff were analyzed during low rainfall intensity precipitation events. Analysis results showed that the effluent pollutant concentrations had low fluctuation after purification by the bioretention cells, and both cells showed relatively stable removal rates for NH₄⁺-N and total phosphorus (TP; i. e., 78.38%-95.03% and 72.04%-76.04%, respectively). Analysis of fluorescence spectra showed that the DOMs in the runoff from the two cells was mostly made up of protein and humic substances, mainly of biological origin or aquatic bacterial metabolites. Both cells performed well in the removal of protein at I, protein at Ⅱ and fulvic acid (i. e., the removal rates could reach 57.33%-61.30%, 29.82%-31.28%, and 35.55%-43.16% respectively). Correlation analyses between water quality and DOM showed that total Nitrogen (TN), TP and total organic carbon (TOC) were positively correlated with the protein content in runoff from the biorentention cells, while NO₃^--N and NH₄⁺-N were negatively correlated with protein content. Meanwhile, TN was negatively correlated with DOMs in regions Ⅳ and Ⅴ of the cells.
