Enhanced CO2 Sensing by Oxygen Plasma-Treated Perovskite-Graphene Nanocomposites

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major greenhouse gas responsible for global warming and climate change. The development of sensitive CO2 sensors is crucial for environmental and industrial applications. This paper presents a novel CO2 sensor based on perovskite nanocrystals immobilized on graphene and functionalized with oxygen plasma treatment. The impact of this post-treatment method was thoroughly investigated using various characterization techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The detection of CO2 at parts per million (ppm) levels demonstrated that the hybrids subjected to 5 min of oxygen plasma treatment exhibited a 3-fold improvement in sensing performance compared to untreated layers. Consequently, the CO2 sensing capability of the oxygen-treated samples showed a limit of detection and limit of quantification of 6.9 and 22.9 ppm, respectively. Furthermore, the influence of ambient moisture on the CO2 sensing performance was also evaluated, revealing a significant effect of oxygen plasma treatment.

Metal Oxide Nanolayer-Decorated Epitaxial Graphene: A Gas Sensor Study

In this manuscript, we explore the sensor properties of epitaxially grown graphene on silicon carbide decorated with nanolayers of CuO, Fe₃O₄, V₂O₅, or ZrO₂. The sensor devices were investigated in regard to their response towards NH₃ as a typical reducing gas and CO, C₆H₆, CH₂O, and NO₂ as gases of interest for air quality monitoring. Moreover, the impact of operating temperature, relative humidity, and additional UV irradiation as changes in the sensing environment have been explored towards their impact on sensing properties. Finally, a cross-laboratory study is presented, supporting stable sensor responses, and the final data is merged into a simplified sensor array. This study shows that sensors can be tailored not only by using different materials but also by applying different working conditions, according to the requirements of certain applications. Lastly, a combination of several different sensors into a sensor array leads to a well-performing sensor system that, with further development, could be suitable for several applications where there is no solution on the market today.

Exhaled breath analysis for gastric cancer diagnosis in Colombian patients

We present here the first study that directly correlates gastric cancer (GC) with specific biomarkers in the exhaled breath composition on a South American population, which registers one of the highest global incidence rates of gastric affections. Moreover, we demonstrate a novel solid state sensor that predicts correct GC diagnosis with 97% accuracy. Alveolar breath samples of 30 volunteers (patients diagnosed with gastric cancer and a controls group formed of patients diagnosed with other gastric diseases) were collected and analyzed by gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) and with an innovative chemical gas sensor based on gold nanoparticles (AuNP) functionalized with octadecylamine ligands. Our GC-MS analyses identified 6 volatile organic compounds that showed statistically significant differences between the cancer patients and the controls group. These compounds were different from those identified in previous studied performed on other populations with high incidence rates of this malady, such as China (representative for Eastern Asia region) and Latvia (representative for Baltic States), attributable to lifestyle, alimentation and genetics differences. A classification model based on principal component analysis of our sensor data responses to the breath samples yielded 97% accuracy, 100% sensitivity and 93% specificity. Our results suggest a new and non-intrusive methodology for early diagnosis of gastric cancer that may be deployed in regions lacking well-developed health care systems as a prediagnosis test for selecting the patients that should undergo deeper investigations (e.g., endoscopy and biopsy).

Poly(3-Methylthiophene) Thin Films Deposited Electrochemically on QCMs for the Sensing of Volatile Organic Compounds

Poly(3-methylthiophene) (PMeT) thin films were electrochemically deposited on quartz crystal microbalance QCM transducers to investigate their volatile organic compound (VOC) sensing properties depending on ambient conditions. Twelve different VOCs including alcohols, ketones, chlorinated compounds, amines, and the organosphosphate dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) were used as analytes. The responses of the chemical sensors against DMMP were the highest among the tested analytes; thus, fabricated chemical sensors based on PMeT can be evaluated as potential candidates for selectively detecting DMMP. Generally, detection limits in the low ppm range could be achieved. The gas sensing measurements were recorded at various humid air conditions to investigate the effects of the humidity on the gas sensing properties. The sensing performance of the chemical sensors was slightly reduced in the presence of humidity in ambient conditions. While a decrease in sensitivity was observed for humidity levels up to 50% r.h., the sensitivity was nearly unaffected for higher humidity levels and a reliable detection of the VOCs and DMMP was possible with detection limits in the low ppm range.
