A Naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide-Containing Covalent Organic Polymer: Preparation, Single Crystal Structure and Battery Application

Inspired by dative boron-nitrogen (B←N) bonds proven to be the promising dynamic linkage for the construction of crystalline covalent organic polymers/frameworks (COPs/COFs), we employed 1,4-bis(benzodioxaborole) benzene (BACT) and N,N'-Di(4-pyridyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide (DPNTCDI) as the corresponding building blocks to construct a functional COP (named as CityU-25), which had been employed as an anode in rechargeable lithium ion batteries. CityU-25 displayed an excellent reversible lithium storage capability of 455 mAh/g after 170 cycles at 0.1 A/g, and an impressive one of 673 mAh/g after 720 cycles at 0.5 A/g. These findings suggest that CityU-25 is a standout candidate for advanced battery technologies, highlighting the potential application of this type of materials.

Photostimulus-Responsive Peptide Dot-Centered Covalent Organic Polymers: Effective Pesticide Sensing via Enhancing Accessibility

Pesticide detection and monitoring are necessary for human health as the overapplication has serious consequences for environmental pollution. Herein, a proper modulation strategy was implemented to construct the photostimulus-responsive peptide-dot-centered covalent organic polymer (P-PCOP) nanoarchitecture for selective sensing of pesticides. The as-constructed P-PCOP was prepared at room temperature by using amino-containing peptide dots as a building block instead of common organic molecules, and the merits of P-PCOP enable it to reduce the steric hindrance of recognition, enhance the interfacial contact of the target, and facilitate the accessibility of sites, which promises to improve the sensitivity. The P-PCOF exhibited a low detection limit of 0.38 μg L-1 to cartap over the range of 1-80 μg L-1 (R2 = 0.9845), and the recoveries percentage in real samples was estimated to be 93.39-105.82%. More importantly, the DFT calculation confirmed the selective recognition ability of P-PCOP on chemical pesticides. In conjunction with a smartphone-integrated portable reading device, on-site chemical sensing is achieved. The proper modulation strategy of fixing a functional guest on the COP system contributes to the advanced structure-chemical properties that are conducive to their applications in chemical sensing.

Preparation of COPs Mixed Matrix Membrane for Sensitive Determination of Six Sulfonamides in Human Urine

In this study, TpDMB-COPs, a specific class of covalent organic polymers (COPs), was synthesized using Schiff-base chemistry and incorporated into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer for the first time to prepare COPs mixed matrix membranes (TpDMB-COPs-MMM). A membrane solid-phase extraction (ME) method based on the TpDMB-COPs-MMM was developed to extract trace levels of six sulfonamides from human urine identified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The key factors affecting the extraction efficiency were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the proposed method demonstrated an excellent linear relationship in the range of 3.5-25 ng/mL (r2 ≥ 0.9991), with the low limits of detection (LOD) between 1.25 ng/mL and 2.50 ng/mL and the limit of quantification (LOQ) between 3.50 ng/mL and 7.00 ng/mL. Intra-day and inter-day accuracies were below 5.0%. The method's accuracy was assessed by recovery experiments using human urine spiked at three levels (7-14 ng/mL, 10-15 ng/mL, and 16-20 ng/mL). The recoveries ranged from 87.4 to 112.2% with relative standard deviations (RSD) ≤ 8.7%, confirming the applicability of the proposed method. The developed ME method based on TpDMB-COPs-MMM offered advantages, including simple operation, superior extraction affinity, excellent recycling performance, and easy removal and separation from the solution. The prepared TpDMB-COPs-MMM was demonstrated to be a promising adsorbent for ME in the pre-concentration of trace organic compounds from complex matrices, expanding the application of COPs and providing references for other porous materials in sample pre-treatment.

Surface Engineering in Covalent Organic Polymers for High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are a promising energy storage technology due to their tempting high theoretical capacity and energy density. Nevertheless, the wastage of active materials that originates from the shuttling effect of polysulfides still hinders advancement of Li-S batteries. The effective design of cathode materials is extremely pivotal to solve this thorny problem. Herein, surface engineering in covalent organic polymers (COPs) has been performed to investigate the influence of pore wall polarity on the performance of COP-based cathodes used for Li-S batteries. With the assistance of experimental investigation and theoretical calculations, performance improvement by increasing pore surface polarity and a synergy effect of the polarized functionalities, along with nano-confinement effect of the COPs, are disclosed, to which the improved performance of Li-S batteries including outstanding Coulombic efficiency (99.0 %) and extremely low capacity decay (0.08 % over 425 cycles at 1.0 C) is attributed. This work not only enlightens the designable synthesis and applications of covalent polymers as polar sulfur hosts with high utilization of active materials, but also provides a feasible guide for the design of effective cathode materials for future advanced Li-S batteries.

An Imine-Based Porous 3D Covalent Organic Polymer as a New Sorbent for the Solid-Phase Extraction of Amphenicols from Water Sample

In this paper, an imine-based porous 3D covalent organic polymer (COP) was synthesized via solvothermal condensation. The structure of the 3D COP was fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis, and Brunauer-Emmer-Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption. This porous 3D COP was used as a new sorbent for the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of amphenicol drugs, including chloramphenicol (CAP), thiamphenicol (TAP), and florfenicol (FF) in aqueous solution. Factors were investigated for their effects on the SPE efficiency, including the types and volume of eluent, washing speed, pH, and salinity of water. Under the optimized conditions, this method gave a wide linear range (0.1-200 ng/mL) with a high correlation coefficient value (R² > 0.99), low limits of detection (LODs, 0.01-0.03 ng/mL), and low limits of quantification (LOQs, 0.04-0.10 ng/mL). The recoveries ranged from 83.98% to 110.7% with RSDs ≤ 7.02%. The good enrichment performance for this porous 3D COP might contribute to the hydrophobic and π-π interactions, the size-matching effect, hydrogen bonding, and the good chemical stability of 3D COP. This 3D COP-SPE method provides a promising approach to selectively extract trace amounts of CAP, TAP, and FF in environmental water samples in ng quantities.

One-pot synthesis of magnetic sulfonated covalent organic polymer for extraction of protoberberine alkaloids in herbs and human plasma

A novel magnetic sulfonated covalent organic polymer was prepared for magnetic solid-phase extraction of protoberberine alkaloids. The magnetic sulfonated covalent organic polymer was rapidly synthesized under mild conditions. The physicochemical properties of the prepared materials were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Several extraction parameters were systematically investigated, including desorption time, pH of sample solution, acetonitrile content, acetic acid content in the eluent, extraction time, and sample volume. By coupling magnetic solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography, an efficient and sensitive method for the extraction and determination of protoberberine alkaloids in complex samples was developed. The proposed method showed great linearity (r > 0.9989), low limits of detection (0.2-0.3 ng/ml), and high precision (relative standard deviations ≤ 5.74%). The proposed method was further applied to the analysis of protoberberine alkaloids in Cortex phellodendri and human plasma samples. The recoveries were 91.50%-110.31% with relative standard deviations less than 6.63% in Cortex phellodendri and 96.12%-111.20% with relative standard deviations lower than 5.56% in plasma samples.

Synthesis and photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/MeTMC-COP composite photocatalyst

Covalent organic polymers have excellent application prospects in photocatalysis due to their excellent visible light absorption and structural designability. However, their fast recombination efficiency and complex preparation process limit their applications. Because of the above problems, this paper used urea to prepare g-C₃N₄ by high-temperature thermal polymerization and prepared g-C₃N₄ composite photocatalyst loaded with MeTMC-COP (g-C₃N₄/MeTMC-COP) by hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic hydrogen generation and photocatalytic degradation capabilities of composite photocatalysts with various mass ratios were investigated by characterizing the catalyst and using the organic dye Rhodamine B (RhB) as the pollutant. According to the research, the specific surface area of the g-C₃N₄/MeTMC-COP composite may reach 40.95 m² g^-1 when the mass ratio of g-C₃N₄ and MeTMC-COP is 3:1 (25.22 m² g^-1). It can offer more active sites for the photocatalytic process, and because the fluorescence peak intensity is the lowest, it has the lowest photogenerated electron-hole recombination efficiency. In comparison to g-C₃N₄, 3:1 g-C₃N₄/MeTMC-COP can breakdown rhodamine B up to 100% after 75 min of light irradiation; its photocatalytic hydrogen generation efficiency is 1.62 times that of g-C₃N₄, and the hydrogen evolution rate is 11.8 μmol g^-1 h^-1.

CoS2 Nanoparticles Embedded in Covalent Organic Polymers as Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction with Ultralow Overpotential

Cobalt disulfide (CoS₂ ) has been explored as attractive electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, bulk CoS₂ sheets have limited catalytic activity due to low exposure of active sites. Herein, through an in-situ vulcanization approach, CoS₂ nanoparticles are embedded into bipyridine-containing covalent organic polymer (BP-COP). The as-prepared nanocomposite CoS₂ @BP-COP exhibits high catalytic activity toward OER with an ultra-low overpotential of 270 mV (vs. RHE) at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 , a small Tafel slope of 36 mV dec^-1 , and an excellent durability for 24 h without decay. The surface of CoS₂ is partially converted into CoOOH to form CoS₂ /CoOOH as active sites under OER conditions. CoS₂ @BP-COP displays superior OER catalytic activity to CoS₂ nanosheets and commercially available RuO₂ under the same conditions. The outstanding OER performance activity of CoS₂ @BP-COP could be attributed to the uniform and small particle sizes of CoS₂ /CoOOH distributed in BP-COP.

Highly Accessible Atomically Dispersed Fe-N x Sites Electrocatalyst for Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Atomically dispersed transition metal-N x sites have emerged as a frontier for electrocatalysis because of the maximized atom utilization. However, there is still the problem that the reactant is difficult to reach active sites inside the catalytic layer in the practical proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) testing, resulting in the ineffective utilization of the deeply hided active sites. In the device manner, the favorite structure of electrocatalysts for good mass transfer is vital for PEMFC. Herein, a facile one-step approach to synthesize atomically dispersed Fe-N x species on hierarchically porous carbon nanostructures as a high-efficient and stable atomically dispersed catalyst for oxygen reduction in acidic media is reported, which is achieved by a predesigned hierarchical covalent organic polymer (COP) with iron anchored. COP materials with well-defined building blocks can stabilize the dopants and provide efficient mass transport. The appropriate hierarchical pore structure is proved to facilitate the mass transport of reactants to the active sites, ensuring the utilization of active sites in devices. Particularly, the structurally optimized HSAC/Fe-3 displays a maximum power density of up to 824 mW cm-2, higher than other samples with fewer mesopores. Accordingly, this work will offer inspirations for designing efficient atomically dispersed electrocatalyst in PEMFC device.

Facile Fabrication of Nanoscale Porphyrinic Covalent Organic Polymers for Combined Photodynamic and Photothermal Cancer Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancers is usually inefficient due to the relatively low level of oxygen in cancer cells; therefore, it needs to combine with other treatment strategies such as chemotherapy or photothermal therapy (PTT) to achieve the best anticancer efficacy. Although porphyrin-containing materials have been widely studied for PDT, the photothermal effect is rarely reported. Herein, nanoscale porphyrin-containing covalent organic polymers (PCOPs) were produced via a room temperature solution-based aging method. The resulting nanoparticles possess high photothermal conversion efficiency (21.7%) and excellent photodynamic effect. For the first time, the in vitro and in vivo tests indicated an enhanced antitumor efficacy for PCOP with combined PDT and PTT. This study provides an efficient approach to fabricate nanoCOP and also demonstrates the great potential of porphyrin-containing COP for biomedical applications.

Cobalt, Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Nanosheet-Assembled Flowers from Metal-Coordinated Covalent Organic Polymers for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

The breakthrough of nonprecious metal catalysts replacing platinum-based catalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is extremely urgent for the development of high-efficiency energy conversation systems. Herein, a solution-processed condensation polymerization using cyanuric chloride and piperazine as the monomers was proposed for the synthesis of a nitrogen-rich covalent organic polymer (COP). High contents of precisely tailored pyridinic-N within the COP facilitate the formation of the Co/N coordination between Co ions and N species. As a result, the subsequent carbonization of the Co-coordinated COP led to the formation of the cobalt, nitrogen dual-doped porous carbon nanosheet-assembled flowers (Co/N-PCNF). The as-obtained Co/N-PCNF catalyst with a nearly 4-electron oxygen reduction pathway exhibits an excellent ORR catalytic activity with a half-wave potential of 0.835 V comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalysts (0.865 V). Most impressively, the Co/N-PCNF catalyst displays a long-term stability and a much better resistance to methanol than the Pt/C catalyst because of its high surface area, well-defined porous structure, and homogeneous distributions of active sites within the carbon matrix. Therefore, this work establishes an operating rule for tailored synthesis of COP-derived nonprecious metal catalysts offering high activity for the ORR in electrochemical energy conversations.
