Effect of delayed mating on reproductive performance and life-history parameters of dengue vector Aedes aegypti

Dengue is a fast-spreading mosquito-borne viral disease in the world. The primary vector of the disease is Aedes aegypti of the family Culicidae. It is a container breeder. Since a vaccine or a drug has not been developed against dengue, vector control appears to be the best method so far to control dengue. The current study was conducted to determine the effect of delayed mating on fecundity, fertility, life-history parameters, and longevity of Ae. aegypti, because such information can help formulate integrated vector control strategies involving the release of sub-fertile males into the environment. During this study, mating was delayed by 0, 2, 5, and 8 days after emergence. Males and females were separated by hand at the pupal stage using the apparent size difference of the sexes. The separated pupae were kept in separate cages until emergence. When mating was delayed for 8 days, the number of eggs laid by the female declined by 38%, and the percentage number of eggs that hatched reduced by 24%. However, the percentage of larval mortality, duration of the larval and pupal periods, and adult longevity were not significantly affected. The current results indicate that delayed mating has a negative effect on the reproductive performance of vector mosquitoes.

Effect of Parental Age and Mating Status on Reproductive Performance of Orius laevigatus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae)

The reproductive potential of biological control agents (BCAs) is crucial for efficient mass-rearing and field performance, and it all begins with mating. Fecundity can be strongly influenced by intrinsic conditions, such as female age and, often neglected, male age and mating status. However, little is known about the impact of parental status at mating on female reproductive outcomes in BCAs. Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) is widely used to control thrips in protected crops. We evaluated how many consecutive females a male could successfully mate and the effect on a female's reproductive output. In addition, we studied the effects of male and female age on mating. In the multiple mating experiment, the males showed a high capacity to fertilize females successively, not reducing fecundity until the sixth mated female. In the delayed mating experiment, copulation duration and fecundity increased with male age but decreased with female age. In contrast, fertility followed an opposite pattern, increasing with female age but decreasing with male age. However, fecundity gains outweighed fertility declines in both sexes. Therefore, reproductive capacity is increased when mating newly emerged females with males a few days old. The implications of our results for mass rearing and field performance are discussed.

Age-specific mortality and fecundity of a spider mite under diet restriction and delayed mating

Numerous experimental life-history studies on aging are mainly baised on two classical models-fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) and nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (Maupas)-with relatively little attention given to other organisms with different life-history characters. Two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) differs from many other arthropods in that the females continue their growth in the early adult stage and can reproduce sexually and asexually. In this study, the influences of dietary restriction and delayed mating on the aging patterns of the spider mite were examined with the prevailing survival and reproduction trade-off hypothesis of aging being tested. Significant sex-specific responses of the spider mites were found. The females showed longevity extension on diet restriction (fasting for 2 days in every 4 days) compared with their counterparts being fed ad libitum, and after delayed mating for 9 days, while the males displayed a decrease in lifespan when experiencing diet restriction but were not significantly influenced by delayed mating. Path analysis was used to investigate the relationship between mite survival and reproduction traits, including longevity, female lifetime reproduction, age at first reproduction, early reproductive efforts and late reproductive efforts, yielding no evidence for trade-offs between these life-history traits. The additive effects of dietary restriction and delayed mating in lifespan extension of female spider mites were confirmed, proving that diet restriction is a robust anti-aging intervention, and that later onset of reproduction can prolong adult lifespan in females.

Effects of Delayed Mating on the Reproductive Performance and Longevity of the Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a severe pest on agricultural crops occurring throughout the tropical Americas, has been reported to occur in China since 2019. To develop novel pest management practices, we studied the effect of delayed mating on the reproductive performance and longevity of S. frugiperda. Delayed mating, progressing from 0 to 7 days, was respectively imposed on both sexes simultaneously, female only, and male only. We demonstrated that delayed mating reduced mating success, number of eggs laid, egg hatch rate, and female oviposition period, while increased copulation duration and longevity. The correlations between the number of delayed days and mating success, number of eggs laid, hatch rate, and oviposition period were all significantly negative irrespective of the sex that was delayed. Meanwhile, there was a positive correlation between delayed days and copulation duration when both sexes were delayed simultaneously or males delayed only. Overall our results indicated that delayed mating in both males and females drastically reduced female reproductive output.

Delayed Mating with Multiple Partners Decreases Indexes of Mating in Female and Male Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Delayed mating is an effective strategy that can decrease the fecundity of a pest by reducing the time that females have to mate. This disruption does not completely inhibit mating and may lead to multiple matings. The effects of delayed mating with multiple partners on different indexes of mating in female and male Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were determined in this study. The delay in mating significantly decreased the number of matings and the mating success of both sexes and the male contribution to reproduction. Compared with the effect on female fecundity, the delayed mating with multiple partners had a greater effect on the male mate contribution to fecundity. The longevity of females and males increased significantly with a 72 h delay in mating. Linear regression analysis showed negative relationships between delayed mating and fecundity and number of matings in both sexes. Thus, delayed mating with multiple partners can disrupt the mating and reproductive potential of S. litura.

Mating Delay Reduces Reproductive Performance but not Longevity in a Monandrous Moth

Age at mating is one of the most important factors that affect mating success and reproductive fitness in insects. The present study investigated how the age of the two sexes at mating determined mating success, reproductive fitness and longevity in Phauda flammans (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Phaudidae), a serious pest of Ficus spp. trees in South and Southeast Asia. The study may provide basic knowledge for the development of mating disruption programs using sex pheromones to control this pest. The species is monandrous and its adults live for only 4-5 d. We show that delayed mating significantly lowered mating success in both sexes, with males being more severely affected than females. Mating delay also reduced reproductive outputs of both sexes but females were more negatively affected than males. We did not find any effect of delayed mating on longevity of either sex. Our findings suggest that mating disruption with sex pheromones can be an effective method to delay mating in P. flammans, reducing reproductive success and thus limit population growth.

Influence of mating disruption on the reproductive biology of the vine mealybug, Planococcus ficus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), under field conditions

BACKGROUND

Although mating disruption is increasingly being used to control the worldwide grapevine pest vine mealybug, Planococcus ficus (Signoret) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), its mode of action remains unclear. A 3-year field experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of mating disruption on the development and reproduction of the vine mealybug. The influence of mating disruption applied over consecutive years on the pest population density was also evaluated.

RESULTS

The percentage of ovipositing females was significantly reduced in disrupted plots by 18.8-66.2%, depending on the year. The absence of ovipositing females in disrupted plots in the autumn of the second and third years indicates the effectiveness of mating disruption throughout the whole growing season. Mating disruption consistently prolonged the pre-oviposition period in all years by up to 12.5 days.

CONCLUSION

Our findings provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the pheromone-based control of the vine mealybug and indicate that the reduction of the pest population density is attributable to both a decrease and a delay in female mating. In addition, the population density of vine mealybugs under mating disruption decreased over the years, indicating that consecutive applications of this control strategy would significantly increase the effectiveness of control of the vine mealybug by mating disruption. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Delay in Mating Reduces Reproductivity but Increases Life Span in Tobacco Cutworm, Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

A pheromone-mediated mating disruption is a vital tool in the management of insect population dynamics that not only prevents mating but also delays mating in the target insect. Here, we examined the effect of delayed mating on the longevity and reproductive performance of the global pest, Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Delayed mating was imposed on both sexes simultaneously, males only, and females only. The results showed that a 30-40% reduction in the successful mating rate of S. litura was caused by 7-d delay in mating. Increased mating ages of both sexes of S. litura resulted in a significant decrease in 3-d-old delayed mating, followed by an increase in mean duration of copulation. Furthermore, delayed mating had a significantly negative influence on the number of S. litura eggs produced. Mating delay imposed on both sexes simultaneously had a significantly greater effect on longevity and the number of eggs than when it was applied to either sex alone, and females were more severely affected by delayed mating than males in terms of longevity. Percentage of mating, fecundity, and female longevity were all significantly correlated with the number of days delayed mating. However, the hatching rate of eggs was not significantly affected by an increased delay in mating. Overall, our results indicated that delayed mating in both females and males drastically reduced the females' reproductive output, which itself was affected more by increasing the age at mating of females than males.

Life history changes in Trogoderma variabile and T. inclusum due to mating delay with implications for mating disruption as a management tactic

Controlling postharvest pest species is a costly process with insecticide resistance and species-specific control requiring multiple tactics. Mating disruption (MD) can be used to both decrease a female's access to males and delay timing of mating and decreases overall mating success in a population and population growth rate. Development of new commercially available MD products requires an understanding of life history parameters associated with mating delay. These can provide information for targeting proportions of reproducing individuals using MD. After delaying mating for females of two closely related beetle species, Trogoderma variabile and T. inclusum, we surveyed survivorship, number of eggs laid, and number of progeny emerged. With increases in mating age, total number of eggs laid and total number of progeny emerged significantly declined over time. T. inclusum typically had greater numbers of eggs laid and progeny emerged compared to T. variabile as female age at mating increased, suggesting that T. inclusum may be more resistant to long-term delays in mating. Life span showed an increase as mating age increased but life span significantly decreased almost immediately following mating. Simulations depicting multiple distributions of mating within a population suggest that in a closed population, high levels of mating delay significantly reduced reproductive growth rates. Although reproductive growth rates were decreased with increased mating age, they are still large enough to maintain populations. This study highlights the differences in life history between two closely related species, suggesting that T. inclusum outperforms T. variabile over the course of a life span, but T. variabile has better reproductive capabilities early in life. MD may also be a viable component of a pest management system for these two species as it significantly decreased overall reproductive output and population growth.

Effects of Delayed Mating and Access to Water on Oviposition and Longevity in Female Amyelois transitella

The navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is a key pest of high-value irrigated nut crops in the arid Central Valley of California. Mating disruption is an established pest management technique for this pest, with reduced non-target impacts. This study compared laboratory survivorship and fertility data with field measurements to improve understanding of factors determining abundance of this species in the presence and absence of mating disruption. While the relative humidity is generally higher in almond orchards compared to readings from meteorological stations, the data indicate little free water in the absence of irrigation. Access to free water has a minor effect on the fertility of females if they mate soon after emergence, but a major effect if mating is delayed for 7 days. Leslie matrix projections indicate that changes in adult survivorship have much less impact than changes in larval survivorship. These findings indicate that control tactics limiting reproduction and survival of immature stages are more important for this species than those targeting adults.
