Determination of the Influence of Hydraulic Additives on the Foaming Process and Stability of the Produced Geopolymer Foams

The research described in this article was aimed at determining the influence of hydraulic additives on the foaming process and the stability of the produced geopolymer foams. These foams can be used as insulation materials to replace the currently commonly used insulations such as expanded polystyrene or polyurethane foams. Geopolymers have low thermal conductivity, excellent fire- and heat-resistant properties, and have fairly good mechanical properties. Research on foamed materials shows that they have the highest class of fire resistance; therefore, they are most often used as insulation products in construction. Geopolymer foams were made of aluminosilicate materials (fly ash) and foaming agents (H₂O₂ and Al powder), and the stabilizers were gypsum and portland cement. Additionally, surfactants were also used. It was found that better foaming effects were obtained for H₂O₂—it is a better foaming agent for geopolymers than Al powder. When using a hydraulic additive—a stabilizer in the form of cement—lower densities and better insulation parameters were obtained than when using gypsum. Portland cement is a better stabilizer than gypsum (calcium sulfates), although the effect may change due to the addition of surfactants, for example.

Bio-Polyurethane Foams Modified with a Mixture of Bio-Polyols of Different Chemical Structures

We report on rigid polyurethane (PUR) foams prepared using different contents of a mixture of two bio-polyols (20–40 php). The bio-polyols were obtained through epoxidation and a ring opening reaction. Different chemical structures of the bio-polyols resulted from the use of 1-hexanol and 1,6-hexanediol as opening agents. The bio-polyols were characterized by hydroxyl values of 104 and 250 mgKOH/g and viscosities of 643 and 5128 mPa·s, respectively. Next, the influence of the bio-polyols on the foaming process of PUR systems as well as the foam properties was evaluated. The bio-foams modified with different contents of the bio-polyols were next compared with a reference foam obtained using a polyether petrochemical polyol. The effect of the apparent density reduction as a result of replacing the petrochemical polyol was minimized by decreasing the water content in the formulation. It was found that the modification of the recipe by changing the content of water, acting as a chemical foaming agent, did not affect the foaming process. However, the introduction of the bio-polyols mixture limited the reactivity of the systems by reducing the maximum temperature of the foaming process. The bio-materials with comparable apparent densities to that of the reference material were characterized by similar values of the thermal conductivity coefficient and a decrease in their mechanical strengths. A deterioration of mechanical properties was caused by the plasticization of the polyurethane matrices with the bio-polyols containing dangling chains. However, all materials were dimensionally stable at room temperature.

New Continuous Process for the Production of Lipopeptide Biosurfactants in Foam Overflowing Bioreactor

In this work, an original culture process in bioreactor named overflowing continuous culture (O-CC) was developed to produce and recover continuously mycosubtilin, a lipopeptide antifungal biosurfactant of major interest. The lipopeptide production was first investigated in shake conical flasks in different culture media [ammonium citrate sucrose (ACS), Difco sporulation medium (DSM), and Landy], followed by a pH condition optimization using 3-(N-morpholino)propanesulfonic acid (MOPS) and 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid (MES) buffered media. A simple theoretical modeling of the biomass evolution combined with an experimental setup was then proposed for O-CC processed in stirred tank reactor at laboratory scale. Seven O-CC experiments were done in modified Landy medium at the optimized pH 6.5 by applying dilution rates comprised between 0.05 and 0.1 h^-1. The O-CC allowed the continuous recovery of the mycosubtilin contained in the foam overflowing out of the reactor, achieving a remarkable in situ product removal superior to 99%. The biomass concentration in the overflowing foam was found to be twofold lower than the biomass concentration in the reactor, relating advantageously this process to a continuous one with biomass feedback. To evaluate its performances regarding the type of lipopeptide produced, the O-CC process was tested with strain BBG116, a mycosubtilin constitutive overproducing strain that also produces surfactin, and strain BBG125, its derivative strain obtained by deleting surfactin synthetase operon. At a dilution rate of 0.1 h^-1, specific productivity of 1.18 mg of mycosubtilin⋅g^-1(DW)⋅h^-1 was reached. Compared with other previously described bioprocesses using almost similar culture conditions and strains, the O-CC one allowed an increase of the mycosubtilin production rate by 2.06-fold.

Classification and Production of Polymeric Foams among the Systems for Wound Treatment

This work represents an overview on types of wounds according to their definition, classification and dressing treatments. Natural and synthetic polymeric wound dressings types have been analyzed, providing a historical overview, from ancient to modern times. Currently, there is a wide choice of materials for the treatment of wounds, such as hydrocolloids, polyurethane and alginate patches, wafers, hydrogels and semi-permeable film dressings. These systems are often loaded with drugs such as antibiotics for the simultaneous delivery of drugs to prevent or cure infections caused by the exposition of blood vessel to open air. Among the presented techniques, a focus on foams has been provided, describing the most diffused branded products and their chemical, physical, biological and mechanical properties. Conventional and high-pressure methods for the production of foams for wound dressing are also analyzed in this work, with a proposed comparison in terms of process steps, efficiency and removal of solvent residue. Case studies, in vivo tests and models have been reported to identify the real applications of the produced foams.

Recent Trends of Foaming in Polymer Processing: A Review

Polymer foams have low density, good heat insulation, good sound insulation effects, high specific strength, and high corrosion resistance, and are widely used in civil and industrial applications. In this paper, the classification of polymer foams, principles of the foaming process, types of blowing agents, and raw materials of polymer foams are reviewed. The research progress of various foaming methods and the current problems and possible solutions are discussed in detail.
