Fractals for an ethnography of time and addiction: Recursive and self-similar temporalities in heroin and poly-substance use

Drawing on both mathematical and anthropological understandings of fractality, this paper explores alternative perspectives of time as it relates to heroin addiction and poly-substance use in Scotland. The paper ethnographically illustrates temporalities which confound typical conceptualizations of linearity, and which can be better understood as fractal. Senses of linear time are disrupted for people who use heroin through intensive poly-substance use, an increasing trend in Scotland, as both time and memory become fragmented beyond coherence or re-assemblage. Distortedness and complexity being common descriptors applied to mathematical fractals, time shattered into uncountable and un-interpretable fragments similarly connotes fracture, dissonance, and distortion. A meaningful engagement with fractal theory contains the potential to open up new vocabulary, imagery, and theoretical avenues with which to grasp complex and non-linear time experience. The aims of the paper are, therefore, twofold; to both provide a nuanced ethnographic exploration of substance use time, and to develop a reflexive analytical framework for temporal experience through fractals.

Fully Quantum Modeling of Exciton Diffusion in Mesoscale Light Harvesting Systems

It has long been a challenge to accurately and efficiently simulate exciton-phonon dynamics in mesoscale photosynthetic systems with a fully quantum mechanical treatment due to extensive computational resources required. In this work, we tackle this seemingly intractable problem by combining the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational method with Davydov trial states and implementing the algorithm in graphic processing units. The phonons are treated on the same footing as the exciton. Tested with toy models, which are nanoarrays of the B850 pigments from the light harvesting 2 complexes of purple bacteria, the methodology is adopted to describe exciton diffusion in huge systems containing more than 1600 molecules. The superradiance enhancement factor extracted from the simulations indicates an exciton delocalization over two to three pigments, in agreement with measurements of fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime in B850 systems. With fractal analysis of the exciton dynamics, it is found that exciton transfer in B850 nanoarrays exhibits a superdiffusion component for about 500 fs. Treating the B850 ring as an aggregate and modeling the inter-ring exciton transfer as incoherent hopping, we also apply the method of classical master equations to estimate exciton diffusion properties in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) B850 nanoarrays using derived analytical expressions of time-dependent excitation probabilities. For both coherent and incoherent propagation, faster energy transfer is uncovered in 2D nanoarrays than 1D chains, owing to availability of more numerous propagating channels in the 2D arrangement.

Stereometric and fractal analysis of granulated silver films used in thin-film hybrid structures

Silver nanostructures are of interest to be used in hybrid thin-film structures with various materials. In this work, we analyse 3D AFM images of granulated silver film nanostructures prepared by thermal evaporation. The advanced AFM data study aims to understand how film thickness and postannealing affect the nanostructure morphology changes. For the first time, the evaluation of surface statistical parameters and fractal geometry were used to characterise the nanostructure morphology of Ag island films. The samples with gravimetric thickness of 2, 4 and 10 nm were analysed before and after annealing at 200°C for 10 min. The statistical processing revealed the essential variation of parameters with Ag film thickness increment and as a postannealing result. The nonmonotonic variation of surface roughness, skewness and fractal dimensions were found. It is caused by the features of the film growth process with the thickness increment and thermally activated diffusion of Ag nanoparticles during annealing. LAY DESCRIPTION: Silver nanostructures are of great scientific interest due to their unique properties and wide applicability. In this work, we analyse microscopic 3D images of silver nanostructures deposited on quartz in vacuum chamber. Such thin-film nanostructures consisted of silver nanoparticles attached to the surface of quartz substrate. We aimed at studying how effective film thickness and postannealing affect the nanostructure shapes and forms. Effective thickness is the equivalent thickness of a smooth film. For this purposes we used special parameters called statistical parameters and fractal geometry to investigate nanostructures. The samples with effective thickness of 2, 4 and 10 nm were analysed before and after annealing at 200°C for 10 min. It has been shown, that effective Ag film thickness and postannealing results in variation of nanostructures forms. We have shown that the variation of statistical parameters were nonmonotonic. It is caused by the features of the film growth process with the thickness increment and thermally activated diffusion of Ag nanoparticles during annealing.

Fractal analysis of spontaneous fluctuations of the BOLD signal in the human brain networks

PURPOSE

To investigate what extent brain regions are continuously interacting during resting-state, independent component analyses (ICA) was applied to analyze resting-state functional MRI (RS-fMRI) data. According to the analyzed results, it was surprisingly found that low frequency fluctuations (LFFs), which belong to the 1/f signal (a signal with power spectrum whose power spectral density is inversely proportional to the frequency), have been classified into groups using ICA; furthermore, the spatial distributions of these groups within the brain were found to resemble the spatial distributions of different networks, which manifests that the signal characteristics of RS LFFs are distinct across networks. In our work, we applied the 1/f model in the fractal analyses to further investigate this distinction.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty healthy participants got involved in this study. They were scanned to acquire the RS-fMRI data. The acquired data were first processed with ICA to obtain the networks of the resting brain. Afterward, the blood-oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signals of these networks were processed with the fractal analyses for obtaining the fractal parameter α.

RESULTS

α was found to significantly vary across networks, which reveals that the fractal characteristic of LFFs differs across networks. According to prior literatures, this difference could be brought by the discrepancy of hemodynamic response amplitude (HRA) between networks. Hence, in our work, we also performed the computational simulation to discover the relationship between α and HRA. Based on the simulation results, HRA is highly linear-correlated with the fractal characteristics of LFFs which is revealed by α.

CONCLUSION

Our results support that the origin of RS-fMRI signals contains arterial fluctuations. Hence, in addition to the commonly used method such as synchrony analysis and power spectral analysis, another approach, the fractal analysis, is suggested for acquiring the information of hemodynamic responses by means of RS-fMRI data.
