Abstract
We provide estimates for (I) annual herpes zoster (HZ) cases, (II) carbon costs related to healthcare utilization, and (III) annual carbon emissions due to HZ among ≥50 years of age (YOA) United States (US) population. We estimated the annual number of HZ cases in the US based on available incidence data and demographic data of individuals ≥50 YOA. Both the healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) associated with HZ cases and the unit carbon dioxide equivalent (i.e. CO2e) costs associated with each type of HCRU in the US were estimated based on literature and studies available online. The carbon footprint associated with HZ annually among US adults ≥50 YOA was estimated by multiplying the unit carbon estimates by the HCRU. In the US population aged ≥50 YOA in 2020 (i.e. approximately 118 million), approximately 1.1 million cases of HZ occur annually assuming no vaccination. Based on 2 sources of HCRU the average kgCO2e per HZ patient ranged from 61.0 to 97.6 kgCO2e, with values by age group ranging from 40.9 kgCO2e in patients aged 50-59 to 195.9 kgCO2e in patients ≥80 YOA. The total annual HZ associated carbon ranged between 67,000 and 107,000 tons of CO2e in the US population aged ≥50 YOA. The impact of HZ on carbon footprint in the US results in considerable greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions. Assuming no vaccination, the burden of HZ is projected to rise over the coming years with the aging populations consequently worsening its impact on GHG emissions. (Figure 1).

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study assessed the incremental healthcare costs and resource utilization (HRU) associated with generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), as well as variability in these outcomes among patients with gMG and common comorbidities and acute MG-related events. METHODS Adults with gMG and without MG were identified from a large US database (2017-2021). The index date was the first MG diagnosis (gMG cohort) or random date (non-MG cohort). Cohorts were propensity score matched 1:1. The gMG cohort included subgroups of patients with a 12-month pre-index (baseline) cardiometabolic or psychiatric comorbidity, or a post-index MG exacerbation/crisis. Monthly healthcare costs (2021 USD) and HRU were compared post-index between gMG and non-MG cohorts. RESULTS The gMG and matched non-MG cohorts each contained 2,739 patients. Mean incremental healthcare costs associated with MG were $4,155 (gMG: $5,567; non-MG: $1,411), with differences driven by incremental inpatient costs of $2,166 (gMG: $2,617; non-MG: $452); all p < 0.001. The gMG versus non-MG cohort had 4.36 times more inpatient admissions and 2.26 times more outpatient visits; all p < 0.001. Among patients with gMG in cardiometabolic (n = 1,859), psychiatric (n = 1,308), and exacerbation/crisis (n = 419) subgroups, mean monthly healthcare costs were $6,660, $7,443, and $17,330, respectively. CONCLUSIONS gMG is associated with substantial incremental costs and HRU, with inpatient costs driving the total incremental costs. Costs increased by 20% and 34% among patients with cardiometabolic and psychiatric conditions, respectively, and over three times among those with acute MG-related events. gMG is a complex disease requiring management of comorbidities and treatment options that can prevent acute symptomatic events.

Abstract
AIM To determine the direct health service costs and resource utilization associated with diagnosing and characterizing idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs), and to assess for limitations and diagnostic delay in current practice. METHODS A retrospective, single-center cohort analysis of all patients diagnosed with IIMs between January 2012 and December 2021 in a large tertiary public hospital was conducted. Demographics, resource utilization and costs associated with diagnosing IIM and characterizing disease manifestations were identified using the hospital's electronic medical record and Health Intelligence Unit, and the Medicare Benefits Schedule. RESULTS Thirty-eight IIM patients were identified. IIM subtypes included dermatomyositis (34.2%), inclusion body myositis (18.4%), immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (18.4%), polymyositis (15.8%), and anti-synthetase syndrome (13.2%). The median time from symptom onset to diagnosis was 212 days (IQR: 118-722), while the median time from hospital presentation to diagnosis was 30 days (8-120). Seventy-six percent of patients required emergent hospitalization during their diagnosis, with a median length of stay of 8 days (4-15). The average total cost of diagnosing IIM was $15 618 AUD (STD: 11331) per patient. Fifty percent of patients underwent both MRI and EMG to identify affected muscles, 10% underwent both pan-CT and PET-CT for malignancy detection, and 5% underwent both open surgical and percutaneous muscle biopsies. Autoimmune serology was unnecessarily repeated in 37% of patients. CONCLUSION The diagnosis of IIMs requires substantial and costly resource use; however, our study has identified potential limitations in current practice and highlighted the need for streamlined diagnostic algorithms to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare-related economic burden.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/AIMS If myasthenia gravis (MG) symptoms are inadequately controlled, patients may experience exacerbations or life-threatening myasthenic crises. Patients with inadequately controlled MG symptoms tend to be treated with chronic intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy and/or multiple immunosuppressant therapies (ISTs). This study aimed to examine disease burden, healthcare resource utilization, and associated costs in these patients. METHODS This was a retrospective observational study using a claims database. Patients with MG were classified into three cohorts based on treatment over a 1-y follow-up period: (a) treated with four or more IVIg episodes (chronic IVIg cohort); (b) received two or more non-steroidal ISTs (NSISTs) sequentially (multiple NSIST cohort); (c) received neither chronic IVIg nor multiple NSISTs (reference cohort). Incidences of crises and exacerbations and annual healthcare costs in each cohort were estimated. RESULTS In total, 3516 patients with MG were included in the analysis. Compared with the reference cohort (n = 2992), the MG crisis rate was approximately twice as high in both the chronic IVIg (n = 324) and multiple NSIST (n = 291) cohorts (p < 0.001); and the MG exacerbation rate was approximately four-fold higher in the chronic IVIg cohort (p < 0.001) and three-fold higher in the multiple NSIST cohort (p < 0.001). Median annual MG-related inflation-adjusted total healthcare costs were higher in the chronic IVIg ($81,900) and multiple NSIST ($30,300) cohorts than in the reference cohort ($2540). DISCUSSION The burden of crises/exacerbations was substantially higher and healthcare costs were considerably greater in patients with MG treated with chronic IVIg or multiple NSISTs than in patients not receiving these treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Creation and maintenance of dialysis vascular access (VA) is a major component of healthcare resource utilization and cost for patients newly started on hemodialysis (HD). Different VA format arises due to patient acceptance of anticipatory care versus late preparation, and clinical characteristics. This study reviews the clinical journey and resource utilization required for different VA formats in the first year of HD. METHOD Data of patients newly commenced on HD between July 2015 and June 2016 were reviewed. Patients were grouped by their VA format: (A) pre-emptive surgically created VA (SCVA), (B) tunneled central venous catheter (CVC) followed by SCVA creation, (C) long-term tunneled CVC only. Clinical events, number of investigations and procedures, hospital admissions, and incurred costs of the three groups were compared. RESULTS In the multivariable analysis, the cost incurred by the group A patients had no significant difference to that incurred in the group B patients (p = 0.08), while the cost of group C is significantly lower (p < 0.001). Both the 62.7% of group A with successful SCVA who avoided tunneled CVC usage, and those with a functionally matured SCVA in group B (66.1%), used fewer healthcare resources and incurred less cost for their access compared to those did not (p = 0.01, p = 0.02, respectively) during the first year of HD. CONCLUSION With comparable cost, a pre-emptive approach enables avoidance of tunneled CVC. Tunneled CVC only access format incurred lower cost and is suitable for carefully selected patients. Successful maturation of SCVA greatly affects patients' clinical journey and healthcare cost.

Abstract
Background A substantial reduction in the number of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation was reported in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. None of the studies have yet explored changes in CIED implantation during the following pandemic. Objective To explore changes in CIED implantation during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2021. Methods From 2019 to 2021, 177,263 patients undergone CIED implantation from 1,227 hospitals in China were included in the analysis. Generalized linear models measured the differences in CIED implantation in different periods. The relationship between changes in CIED implantation and COVID-19 cases was assessed by simple linear regression models. Results Compared with the pre-COVID-19 period, the monthly CIED implantation decreased by 17.67% (95% CI: 16.62-18.72%, p < 0.001) in 2020. In 2021, the monthly number of CIED implantation increased by 15.60% (95% CI: 14.34-16.85%, p < 0.001) compared with 2020. For every 10-fold increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, the monthly number of pacemaker implantation decreased by 429 in 2021, while it decreased by 676 in 2020. The proportion of CIED implantation in secondary medical centers increased from 52.84% in 2019 to 56.77% in 2021 (p < 0.001). For every 10-fold increase in regional accumulated COVID-19 cases, the proportion of CIED implantation in secondary centers increased by 6.43% (95% CI: 0.47-12.39%, p = 0.036). Conclusion The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of CIED implantation is diminishing in China. Improving the ability of secondary medical centers to undertake more operations may be a critical way to relieve the strain on healthcare resources during the epidemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to analyze the health resource allocation efficiency in Sichuan Province from 2010 to 2018 and provide other countries with China's experience. METHODS We used the super efficiency slack based model (SBM) model and Malmquist index to analyze the super efficiency and inter-period efficiency of health resource allocation in 19 cities in Sichuan Province from 2010 to 2018 and propose the input-output optimization scheme of health resource allocation in 2018. Finally, the Tobit model was used to estimate the influencing factors of health resource allocation efficiency. RESULTS The total allocation of health resources in Sichuan Province was increasing in addition to the total number of visits from 2010 to 2018. The super efficiency SBM results identified that the sample's average score was between 0.651 and 3.244, with an average of 1.041, of which 15 cities had not reached data envelopment analysis effectiveness. According to the Malmquist index, the average total factor productivity index of Sichuan Province was 0.930, which showed an imbalance in resource input, and its fluctuation was mainly related to the technological progress index and scale efficiency. The efficiency score was affected by the average annual income of residents, population density and education level. CONCLUSIONS The amount of health resource allocation in Sichuan Province had shown an overall upward trend since 2010. However, resource allocation efficiency was not high, and there were problems such as significant regional differences, insufficient technological innovation capabilities and unscientific allocation of resource scale. To optimize the resource allocation structure, we suggest that the relevant departments pay attention to the impact of natural disasters, the average annual income of residents, population density and education level on efficiency to allocate health resources scientifically.

Abstract
PURPOSE INVICOST, a medico-economic analysis, compared costs of managing treatment-naive patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) receiving intravitreal injections (IVIs) of aflibercept (AFL), dexamethasone implant (DXI) or ranibizumab (RAN) over 1 year. METHODS Healthcare resource use and associated costs were estimated using individual patient data from INVICTUS, a prospective, open-label, monocentric study. Healthcare costs comprised direct medical costs such as drug acquisition and administration, consultations and ophthalmological procedures. Costs were assessed from the French National Health Insurance perspective using published national tariffs expressed in 2019 euros. RESULTS Of the 60 treated eyes, 48 had no treatment switch; 14 received AFL, 19 received DXI and 15 received RAN. AFL-treated eyes received an average of 6.5 IVIs, DXI-treated patients received 2 IVIs and RAN-treated received 6.8 IVIs. All treated eyes received an initial prescription for adjunctive ocular medications and 349 follow-up procedures were performed including an average of 3.9 optical coherence tomography and 3.2 retinography procedures per eye. Average total direct cost of per-eye treatment was €4516 (€1128-€8257). Average cost was €5782 for eyes treated with AFL, €2779 with DXI and €5536 with RAN. Drug therapy was the cost driver: €4394 (76%) for AFL, €1915 for DXI (69%) and €4268 (77%) for RAN. CONCLUSION The difference in total treatment cost is largely explained by the significantly lower frequency of IVI and annual cost of therapy with DXI, compared with AFL and RAN. INVICOST is the first study comparing treatment costs with AFL, DXI and RAN in France in current clinical practice.

Abstract
The annual prevalence of metastatic neuroendocrine tumours (mNETs) is rising, leading to significant healthcare costs. The present study aimed to describe healthcare resource use (HRU) and the corresponding costs among patients with mNETs, according to primary tumour location, functioning status and type of treatments. The LyREMeNET study included consecutive mNET patients with a diagnosis performed between January 2010 and December 2017, who were seen at least once in the ENETS center of excellence in Lyon. The median HRU and costs per patient were estimated, up to 3 years before and after the diagnosis. The Cancer database of the center was linked to the French national health data system. HRU and related costs were described per person per month (PPPM). Among 316 patients presenting with a mNET, 48.4% had a small-intestinal mNET, 32.3% had a pancreatic mNET and 39.2% had carcinoid syndrome. The mean overall cost increased from €615 to €2875 PPPM between the years preceding and following the diagnosis, and remained above €2500 in the two subsequent years. The two main cost drivers of total healthcare expenditure were drugs (€1161) and hospital stay (€662). Median costs of mNETs arising from pancreas and small intestine were €2325 and €2540 PPPM, respectively. Costs were higher in patients with a functional mNET (€2807 PPPM for carcinoid syndrome) and during peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) (€8835 PPPM). The highest overall cost was found during the first year following the diagnosis. Cost of care was higher for small intestine mNETs, for functional mNETs and during peptide receptor radionuclide therapy.

Abstract
The clinical and economic burden associated with hard-to-heal wounds is high and evidence suggests that it continues to increase. Healthcare resources consumed during the provision of wound care can be saved by implementing strategies and actions aimed at promoting wound healing. When these are successful, the frequency distribution curve for time to healing and for the consumption of healthcare resources should 'move to the left' and the extent to which it is 'skewed to the right' would be reduced, resulting in a reduction in the population mean for time to wound healing, and correspondingly, healthcare resources. Not only would this release healthcare resources in the short term, but, if these changes are maintained, would render savings sustainable, thereby contributing to lowering the overall burden of wounds and wound care. In this article, we present evidence that suggests that the adoption of adjunct topical haemoglobin spray can effect these desired changes in the wound healing curve and, due to the nature of the technology, it can be easily and sustainably implemented within relevant whole populations requiring wound care. The ease of adoption and impact is further illustrated by a patient case study.

Abstract
Purpose To characterize and estimate the proportion of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who continue to exacerbate while receiving triple therapy and further describe these patients according to blood eosinophil counts. Methods This was an analysis of the 2017 Adelphi Real-World Respiratory Disease Specific Programme (DSP) survey of patients with COPD from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom (UK). Demographics were assessed on the date of completion of the physician/patient questionnaire; clinical characteristics were captured for the previous 12 months. The proportion of patients receiving triple therapy, who had experienced ≥2 moderate or ≥1 severe acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) in the 12 months prior to index, and had blood eosinophil counts ≥150 cells/µL (T-AECOPD-EOS150) or ≥300 cells/µL (T-AECOPD-EOS300), were calculated. Results In total, 2876 patients were included of which 762 had an eosinophil value. A higher proportion of patients in the ≥300 cells/μL eosinophil group (55.9%) compared with 150–<300 cells/μL (48.7%) and <150 cells/μL (47.1%) groups experienced ≥2 moderate and/or ≥1 severe AECOPD in the year prior to index. The ≥300 cells/μL eosinophil group had the lowest reported level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). More severe disease in terms of comorbidities, lung function, healthcare resource use, and HRQoL was seen in patients with ≥2 moderate or ≥1 severe AECOPD in the year prior to index while receiving triple therapy, compared with patients who did not meet these criteria. In total, 10.6% and 6.2% of the COPD population, respectively, met the criteria for the T-AECOPD-EOS150 and T-AECOPD-EOS300 cohorts. Conclusion This analysis demonstrates that there is a subpopulation of patients with COPD who continue to experience exacerbations despite receiving triple therapy; approximately three-quarters of these had eosinophils ≥150 cells/μL and one-third had eosinophils ≥300 cells/μL; these patients may benefit from eosinophil-targeted therapies.

Abstract
Individuals having sustained traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) in the United States are living longer as compared to historical trends, thanks to an ever-evolving understanding of the nature of this injury. Despite this, multiple barriers to care for TSCI patients remain including variations in government-issued veteran insurance, privatized insurance, and among uninsured individuals. The United States alone experiences 12,000 new TSCI cases every year, many of these are found to occur in a growing proportion of elderly individuals. It is crucial to understand both the short-term direct costs as wells as the long-term rehabilitation costs required by these TSCI patients. The lifetime financial burden for those having sustained a TSCI can be immense for patients, insurance companies, and hospital systems alike. Among those with TSCI, re-hospitalization rates are high, leading to increased healthcare resource utilization within this specific patient population. Costs can quickly balloon into hundreds of thousands of dollars and cause a profound financial burden for these patients. This review article seeks to communicate an understanding of the current financial landscape surrounding TSCI patients. The authors will also examine the costs of acute emergency room surgical care such as American spinal injury association grade, hospital length of stay, as well as the timing delay between injury and surgical decompression. Long-term costs associated with TSCI such as rehabilitation, care of secondary comorbidities, and post-injury employment prospects will be examined as well. These costs will be framed from the patient’s perspective as well as from both the hospital and insurance company’s perspectives. It is hoped a complete understanding as to what makes TSCI such a medically and financially burdensome injury will allow for improved healthcare resource utilization in this population.

AIMS The aim of this analysis was to assess healthcare resource utilization in the pivotal phase 3 TOURMALINE-MM1 study of the oral proteasome inhibitor ixazomib or placebo plus lenalidomide and dexamethasone (Rd) in relapsed and/or refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM). METHODS In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study (NCT01564537), 722 patients with RRMM following 1-3 prior lines of therapy received Rd plus ixazomib (ixazomib-Rd; n = 360) or matching placebo (placebo-Rd; n = 362) until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Healthcare resource utilization data were captured on Day 1 of each 28-day cycle, every 4 weeks during follow-up for progression-free survival, and every 12 weeks during subsequent follow-up, and included medical encounters (length of stay, inpatient, outpatient, and reason) and number of missing days from work or other activities for patients and caregivers. RESULTS Exposure-adjusted rates of hospitalization were similar between the ixazomib-Rd and placebo-Rd arms, at 0.530 and 0.564 per patient year (ppy), respectively, as were outpatient visit rates (3.305 and 3.355 ppy). Mean length of hospitalization per patient was 10.0 and 10.8 days, respectively. In both arms, hospitalization and outpatient visit rates were higher in patients with two or three prior lines of treatment (ixazomib-Rd: 0.632 and 3.909 ppy; placebo-Rd: 0.774 and 3.539 ppy) compared with patients with one prior line (ixazomib-Rd: 0.460 and 2.888 ppy; placebo-Rd: 0.436 and 3.243 ppy). Patients and their caregivers who missed any work or other activity missed a median of 7 and 5 days in the ixazomib-Rd arm, respectively, vs 8 and 4 days with placebo-Rd. LIMITATIONS The study was not powered for a statistical comparison of healthcare resource utilization between treatment arms, nor did it capture costs associated with utilization of the identified healthcare resources. CONCLUSIONS This pre-specified analysis demonstrated that the all-oral triplet regimen of ixazomib added to Rd did not increase healthcare resource utilization compared with placebo-Rd.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Huntington's disease (HD) is a multifaceted neurodegenerative disorder characterized by involuntary movements, specifically chorea, as well as behavioral and psychiatric disturbance, and cognitive dysfunction. Tetrabenazine was the first approved treatment for chorea, although tolerability concerns exist. OBJECTIVES To characterize demographic and clinical characteristics of HD patients with chorea based on tetrabenazine use and examine treatment persistence with tetrabenazine in a real-world setting. METHODS Patients with a claim for HD-associated chorea (ICD-9-CM code 333.4) between 1/1/08 and 9/30/15 were selected from the MarketScan® Commercial and Medicare Supplemental databases. The first diagnosis date during the study period was considered the index date, with ≥6 months of continuous medical and prescription coverage before and after the index date. Treatment persistence was defined as the number of days from initiation to discontinuation or end of follow-up period. Discontinuation was defined as a gap in therapy of ≥60 days. RESULTS 1644 patients met selection criteria (mean age ± standard deviation: 54.5 ± 15.5), of which 151 (9.2%) were treated with tetrabenazine during the study period. The average (median) daily dose of tetrabenazine during the treatment period was 45.5 (42.3) mg/day. A total of 41.8% (59/141) of HD patients who initiated tetrabenazine experienced a ≥60-day gap in tetrabenazine therapy, with a median time to discontinuation of 293.5 days. During the 6-month post-index period after HD diagnosis, HD patients incurred higher all-cause healthcare costs ($20 204) vs the 6-month pre-index period ($6057), driven by higher hospitalization and pharmacy costs. CONCLUSIONS A small percentage of HD patients with chorea were treated with tetrabenazine and discontinuation rates were high among those receiving treatment, with a median time to discontinuation of 9 months.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite the high prevalence of vertigo globally and an acknowledged, but under-reported, effect on an individual's wellbeing, few studies have evaluated the burden on healthcare systems and society. This study was aimed to quantitatively determine the impact of vertigo on healthcare resource use and work productivity. METHODS The economic burden of vertigo was assessed through a multi-country, non-interventional, observational registry of vertigo patients: the Registry to Evaluate the Burden of Disease in Vertigo. Patients included were those with a new diagnosis of Meniere's disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, other vertigo of peripheral vestibular origin, or peripheral vestibular vertigo of unknown origin. RESULTS A total of 4,294 patients at 618 centers in 13 countries were included during the registry. Of the 4,105 patients analyzed, only half were in employment. Among this working patient population, 69.8% had reduced their workload, 63.3% had lost working days, and 4.6% had changed and 5.7% had quit their jobs, due to vertigo symptoms. Use of healthcare services among patients was high. In the 3 months preceding Visit 1, patients used emergency services 0.4 ± 0.9 times, primary care consultations 1.6 ± 1.8 times, and specialist consultations 1.4 ± 2.0 times (all mean ± SD). A mean of 2.0 ± 5.4 days/patient was also spent in hospital due to vertigo. CONCLUSION In addition to the negative impact on the patient from a humanistic perspective, vertigo has considerable impact on work productivity and healthcare resource use.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study intended to substantiate healthcare resource utilization, costs, and funding patterns of US and Canadian Friedreich's Ataxia (FRDA) populations, to assess compliance with treatment guidance and to identify areas where novel healthcare measures or improved access to existing care may improve patients' functional and social capabilities and reduce the financial impact on the healthcare systems. METHODS Healthcare resource utilization and costs were collected in a cross-sectional study in the US (N = 197) and Canada (N = 43) and analyzed across severity of disease categories. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hypothesis testing were applied. RESULTS In the US, healthcare costs of FRDA patients were higher than those of "adults with two and more chronic conditions." Significantly higher costs were incurred in advanced stages of the disease, with paid homecare being the main driver. This pattern was also observed in Canada. Compliance with the recommended annual neurological and cardiological follow-up was high, but was low for the recommended regular speech therapy. In the US public and private funding ratios were similar for the FRDA and the general populations. In Canada the private funding ratio for FRDA was higher than average. CONCLUSION The variety of healthcare measures addressing the broad range of symptoms of FRDA, and the increasing use of paid home care as disease progresses made total US healthcare costs of FRDA exceed the costs of US adults with two and more chronic conditions. Therefore, measures delaying disease progression will allow patients to maintain their independence longer and may reduce costs to the healthcare system. Novel measures to address dysarthria and to ensure access to them should be further investigated. The higher than average private funding ratio in Canada was due to the relatively high cost of the pharmacological treatment of FRDA.

Abstract
Abstract Objective. The aim of the present 18-month retrospective study was to assess the association between a continuous long-term treatment with risperidone long-acting injectable (RLAI) of at least 12 months and in-patient care of patients suffering of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Furthermore we wanted to assess the cost-effectiveness of a long-term treatment with RLAI. Methods. In a mirror-image design, data of 119 patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder who were switched to RLAI treatment were analyzed retrospectively. Hospitalization rates, the duration of inpatient treatment and the overall treatment costs were assessed 12 and 18 months after switching to RLAI and compared to the equivalent time preceding the switch. Results. After 12 and 18 months of RLAI treatment, the mean reduction of inpatient care was 27.4 and 38.4 days per patient, respectively, compared to the equivalent time period prior to switching to RLAI (Wilcoxon P < 0.001). The overall savings in drug and institutional-care costs were 21.1 and 21.9%, respectively. Conclusions. Patients receiving RLAI for at least 12 months showed a reduction in inpatient days and lower overall treatment costs.
