Guiding Chart for Initial Layer Choice with Nanoimprint Lithography

When nanoimprint serves as a lithography process, it is most attractive for the ability to overcome the typical residual layer remaining without the need for etching. Then, 'partial cavity filling' is an efficient strategy to provide a negligible residual layer. However, this strategy requires an adequate choice of the initial layer thickness to work without defects. To promote the application of this strategy we provide a 'guiding chart' for initial layer choice. Due to volume conservation of the imprint polymer this guiding chart has to consider the geometric parameters of the stamp, where the polymer fills the cavities only up to a certain height, building a meniscus at its top. Furthermore, defects that may develop during the imprint due to some instability of the polymer within the cavity have to be avoided; with nanoimprint, the main instabilities are caused by van der Waals forces, temperature gradients, and electrostatic fields. Moreover, practical aspects such as a minimum polymer height required for a subsequent etching of the substrate come into play. With periodic stamp structures the guiding chart provided will indicate a window for defect-free processing considering all these limitations. As some of the relevant factors are system-specific, the user has to construct his own guiding chart in praxis, tailor-made to his particular imprint situation. To facilitate this task, all theoretical results required are presented in a graphical form, so that the quantities required can simply be read from these graphs. By means of examples, the implications of the guiding chart with respect to the choice of the initial layer are discussed with typical imprint scenarios, nanoimprint at room temperature, at elevated temperature, and under electrostatic forces. With periodic structures, the guiding chart represents a powerful and straightforward tool to avoid defects in praxis, without in-depth knowledge of the underlying physics.

One-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of low convergence ratio direct-drive inertial confinement fusion implosions

Indirect drive inertial confinement fusion experiments with convergence ratios below 17 have been previously shown to be less susceptible to Rayleigh-Taylor hydrodynamic instabilities, making this regime highly interesting for fusion science. Additional limitations imposed on the implosion velocity, in-flight aspect ratio and applied laser power aim to further reduce instability growth, resulting in a new regime where performance can be well represented by one-dimensional (1D) hydrodynamic simulations. A simulation campaign was performed using the 1D radiation-hydrodynamics code HYADES to investigate the performance that could be achieved using direct-drive implosions of liquid layer capsules, over a range of relevant energies. Results include potential gains of 0.19 on LMJ-scale systems and 0.75 on NIF-scale systems, and a reactor-level gain of 54 for an 8.5 MJ implosion. While the use of 1D simulations limits the accuracy of these results, they indicate a sufficiently high level of performance to warrant further investigations and verification of this new low-instability regime. Femtosecond Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures on Fused Silica: The Impact of the Initial Substrate Temperature

The formation and properties of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) were investigated upon fs-laser irradiation of fused silica at different initial substrate temperatures, T_S. For substrate heating between room temperature, T_RT, and T_S = 1200 °C, a continuous wave CO₂ laser was used as the radiation source. The surface structures generated in the air environment at normal incidence with five successive fs-laser pulses (pulse duration, τ = 300 fs, laser wavelength, λ = 1025 nm, repetition frequency, f_rep = 1 kHz) were characterized by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and 2D-Fourier transform analysis. The threshold fluence of fused silica was systematically investigated as a function of T_S. It was shown that the threshold fluence for the formation of low-spatial frequency LIPSS (LSFL) decreases with increasing T_S. The results reveal that the initial spatial period observed at T_RT is notably increased by increasing T_S, finally leading to the formation of supra-wavelength LIPSS. The findings are discussed in the framework of the electromagnetic interference theory, supplemented with an analysis based on thermo-convective instability occurring in the laser-induced molten layer. Our findings provide qualitative insights into the formation mechanisms of LIPSS, which allow improvements of the control of nanostructure formation to be made for corresponding applications of dielectric materials in the future.

Shrinking instability of toroidal droplets

Toroidal droplets are inherently unstable due to surface tension. They can break up, similar to cylindrical jets, but also exhibit a shrinking instability, which is inherent to the toroidal shape. We investigate the evolution of shrinking toroidal droplets using particle image velocimetry. We obtain the flow field inside the droplets and show that as the torus evolves, its cross-section significantly deviates from circular. We then use the experimentally obtained velocities at the torus interface to theoretically reconstruct the internal flow field. Our calculation correctly describes the experimental results and elucidates the role of those modes that, among the many possible ones, are required to capture all of the relevant experimental features.
