Minimum Entropy Production Effect on a Quantum Scale

The discovery of quantized electric conductance by the group of van Wees in 1988 was a major breakthrough in physics. A decade later, the group of Schwab has proven the existence of quantized thermal conductance. Advancing from these and many other aspects of the quantized conductances in other phenomena of nature, the concept of quantized entropy current can be established and it eases the description of a transferred quantized energy package. This might yield a universal transport behavior of the microscopic world. During the transfer of a single energy quantum, hν, between two neighboring domains, the minimum entropy increment is calculated. It is pointed out that the possible existence of the minimal entropy transfer can be formulated. Moreover, as a new result, it is proved that this minimal entropy transfer principle is equivalent to the Lagrangian description of thermodynamics.

Solving Equations of Motion by Using Monte Carlo Metropolis: Novel Method Via Random Paths Sampling and the Maximum Caliber Principle

A permanent challenge in physics and other disciplines is to solve Euler-Lagrange equations. Thereby, a beneficial investigation is to continue searching for new procedures to perform this task. A novel Monte Carlo Metropolis framework is presented for solving the equations of motion in Lagrangian systems. The implementation lies in sampling the path space with a probability functional obtained by using the maximum caliber principle. Free particle and harmonic oscillator problems are numerically implemented by sampling the path space for a given action by using Monte Carlo simulations. The average path converges to the solution of the equation of motion from classical mechanics, analogously as a canonical system is sampled for a given energy by computing the average state, finding the least energy state. Thus, this procedure can be general enough to solve other differential equations in physics and a useful tool to calculate the time-dependent properties of dynamical systems in order to understand the non-equilibrium behavior of statistical mechanical systems.

Irreversibility and Action of the Heat Conduction Process

Irreversibility (that is, the “one-sidedness” of time) of a physical process can be characterized by using Lyapunov functions in the modern theory of stability. In this theoretical framework, entropy and its production rate have been generally regarded as Lyapunov functions in order to measure the irreversibility of various physical processes. In fact, the Lyapunov function is not always unique. In the represent work, a rigorous proof is given that the entransy and its dissipation rate can also serve as Lyapunov functions associated with the irreversibility of the heat conduction process without the conversion between heat and work. In addition, the variation of the entransy dissipation rate can lead to Fourier’s heat conduction law, while the entropy production rate cannot. This shows that the entransy dissipation rate, rather than the entropy production rate, is the unique action for the heat conduction process, and can be used to establish the finite element method for the approximate solution of heat conduction problems and the optimization of heat transfer processes.

Köln-Timişoara Molecular activity combined models toward interspecies toxicity assessment

Aiming to provide a unified picture of computed activity – quantitative structure activity relationships, the so called Köln (ESIP-ElementSpecificInfluenceParameter) model for activity and Timisoara (Spectral-SAR) formulation of QSAR were pooled in order to assess the toxicity modeling and inter-toxicity correlation maps for aquatic organisms against paradigmatic organic compounds. The Köln ESIP model for estimation of a compound toxicity is based on the experimental measurement expressing the direct action of chemicals on the organism Hydractinia echinata so that the structural influence parameters are reflected by the metamorphosis degree itself. As such, the calculation of the structural parameters is absolutely necessary for correct evaluation and interpretation of the evolution of M(easured) and the C(computed) values. On the other hand, the Timişoara Spectral-SAR analysis offers correlation models and paths for H.e. species as well as for four other different organisms with which the toxicity may be inter-changed by means of the same mechanism of action induced by certain common chemicals.
