Impact of Starting Knee Flexion Angle on Muscle Activity and Performance during Plyometrics without Jumping

Most of the existing research has focused on jump plyometrics, where landing reaction forces must be dissipated among lower limb articulations. In contrast, the investigation of resisted plyometrics without jumping, devoid of such landing forces, remains relatively limited. This study aimed to (i) investigate the impact of resisted plyometrics without jumping at two knee flexion angles (60 and 90 degrees) on vastus muscle activity relative to limb dominance and (ii) assess strength, power, and work during the concentric-eccentric phases of these exercises. Thirty-one healthy participants underwent quantification of lower limb muscle amplitude, strength, power, and work during resisted plyometrics without jumping from both 60° and 90° knee flexion positions. After anthropometric evaluations, participants used a dynamometer with a load equal to 80% of body weight while wireless surface electromyography electrodes recorded data. Statistical analyses utilized paired t-tests or nonparametric equivalents and set significance at p ≤ 0.05. Results showed significantly higher muscle activity in the vastus medialis (VM) (dominant: 47.4%, p = 0.0008, rs = 0.90; nondominant: 54.8%, p = 0.047, rs = 0.88) and vastus lateralis (VL) (dominant: 46.9%, p = 0.0004, rs = 0.86; nondominant: 48.1%, p = 0.021, rs = 0.67) muscles when exercises started at 90° knee flexion, regardless of limb dominance. Substantial intermuscle differences occurred at both 60° (50.4%, p = 0.003, rs = 0.56) and 90° (54.8%, p = 0.005, rs = 0.62) knee flexion, favoring VM in the nondominant leg. Concentric and eccentric strength, power, and work metrics significantly increased when initiating exercises from a 90° position. In conclusion, commencing resisted plyometrics without jumping at a 90° knee flexion position increases VM and VL muscle activity, regardless of limb dominance. Furthermore, it enhances strength, power, and work, emphasizing the importance of knee flexion position customization for optimizing muscle engagement and functional performance.

Sex differences in change of direction deficit and asymmetries in footballers with cerebral palsy

The aims of this study were (1) to describe and examine differences in change of direction (COD) performance and the magnitude of asymmetries in para-footballers with cerebral palsy (CP) and controls and (2) to evaluate the association between COD outcomes and linear sprint performance. Twenty-eight international para-footballers with CP and thirty-nine non-impaired football players (control group) participated in this study. All participants completed a 10-m sprint and two attempts of the 505 COD test with the dominant and non-dominant leg. The COD deficit was calculated using the difference between the 505 test and the 10-m sprint time, while the asymmetry index was determined by comparing each leg's completion time and COD deficit. Players across groups showed interlimb asymmetries between the dominant and non-dominant legs in COD outcomes and deficit (p < 0.05, d_g  = -0.40 to -1.46), although these asymmetries imbalance were not significantly different between the sexes with and without impairment. Males with CP exhibited a faster directional COD speed and a shorter COD deficit than their female counterparts (p < 0.01, d_g  = -1.68 to -2.53). Similarly, the control group had faster scores than the CP groups of the same sex (p < 0.05, d_g  = 0.53 to 3.78). Lastly, the female CP group and male control groups showed a significant association between sprint and the COD deficit in the dominant leg (p < 0.05, r = -0.58 to 0.65). Therefore, the use of directional dominance, the COD deficit, and asymmetry outcomes could be helpful for classification purposes to assess the impact of the impairment on sport-specific activity testing according to sex.

Exploring the Differences Between Dominant and Nondominant Feet and Hands Bone Mineral Density

The assessment of regional bone mineral density (BMD) has proved to be useful for illustrating the impact of focal bone demineralization diseases on bone mass. In these scenario, a common practice is to compare the affected limb with the contralateral limb. However, there are no studies comparing BMD differences between dominant vs nondominant limbs at these sites. In addition, most studies have assessed BMD in specific ROIs (regions of interests) instead of in the whole limb. The purpose of our study was to compare the BMD of dominant vs nondominant hands and feet in healthy individuals, using both the whole limb software and specific ROIs. We performed a cross-sectional analysis on untrained women and men over 18 years of age who volunteered to participate. BMD (g/cm²), bone area (cm²) and BMC (bone mineral content) (g) were measured by Lunar Prodigy DXA (GE Healthcare, Madison, WI, USA), using 2 different approaches: whole limb/region software and specific ROIs. A total of 42 subjects (11 men and 31 women) were included. Mean age was 44.19 ± 10.49 years. BMD was greater in the dominant in comparison with the nondominant hand. The difference was 0.014 (95% CI, 0.009-0.018) for the whole hand BMD, 0.023 (95% CI, 0.003-0.044) for ROI 1, and 0.016 (95% CI, 0.003-0.029) for ROI 2. No significant differences were found between dominant and nondominant foot BMD, using the whole limb software and specific ROIs. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the differences in BMD, bone area and BMC in terms of limb dominance, supporting the usefulness of DXA as an accurate and objective complementary diagnostic or follow-up tool in focal bone demineralization diseases.

Load Carriage Modes and Limb Crossing Patterns Altered Gait during Obstacle Negotiation

Personal and environmental factors both increase the likelihood of falling injuries while negotiating obstacles. Eighteen male participants (seven older, eleven young) were recruited to walk over an obstacle with and without loads on their hands to study the effects of age, load carriage modes, and limb crossing patterns on gait during obstacle negotiation. Participants initiated tasks with either their dominant or non-dominant leg. Step length (SL), toe clearance (TC), step velocity (V), and step width (SW) were extracted from four critical steps. Results showed that during obstacle negotiation (1) older adults had more TC than younger adults, (2) hand loads affected SL and TC, (3) gait parameters are dissimilar between the dominant limb and non-dominant limb.

Inter-limb differences in unilateral countermovement jump height are not associated with the inter-limb differences in bilateral countermovement jump force production

This study aimed to explore the relationship between the inter-limb differences in unilateral countermovement (CMJ) height and the inter-limb differences in bilateral CMJ force production, and to elucidate whether the self-reported preferred leg contributes more to force production than the non-preferred leg. Twenty-three senior basketball players performed in a single session eight unilateral CMJs (four with each leg) and four bilateral CMJs. Impulse, peak force, mean force were recorded during the bilateral CMJ, and jump height during the unilateral CMJ. Small correlations were observed between the inter-limb differences in unilateral CMJ height and the inter-limb asymmetries in bilateral CMJ impulse, peak force, and mean force (p ≥ 0.171; r≤-0.142). The self-reported preferred leg revealed a higher performance in 7 out of 23 participants (Kappa = -0.20) for the unilateral CMJ height, 7 out of 23 participants (Kappa = -0.11) for the bilateral CMJ impulse, 6 out of 23 participants (Kappa = -0.36) for the bilateral CMJ peak force, and 8 out of 23 participants (Kappa = -0.34) for the bilateral CMJ mean force. These results highlight that the asymmetries detected during bilateral CMJs cannot be extrapolated to unilateral CMJs, and that the preferred leg generally contributes less to force production than the non-preferred leg during both bilateral and unilateral CMJs.

Female Adolescent Soccer Players Utilize Different Neuromuscular Strategies Between Limbs During the Propulsion Phase of a Lateral Vertical Jump

BACKGROUND

Multiplanar dynamic stability is an important unilateral function in soccer performance but has been scarcely examined in female soccer players. The lateral vertical jump task assesses unilateral functional performance, and energy generation contribution examines how each joint (hip, knee, ankle) contributes to the vertical component of the vertical jump phase to measure inter- and intra-limb differences.

PURPOSE

To examine dominant versus non-dominant limb performance using energy generation contribution of the hip, knee, and ankle during the vertical jump component of the lateral vertical jump.

STUDY DESIGN

Cross-sectional observational study.

METHODS

Seventeen healthy, adolescent female soccer players (age 13.4±1.7 years; height 160.6±6.0 cm; mass 53.1±8.2 kg) participated. Quadriceps strength was measured via isokinetic dynamometry. Energy generation contribution (measured from maximal knee flexion to toe off) and vertical jump height were measured during the vertical component of the lateral vertical jump.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference between limbs for quadriceps strength (p=0.64), jump height (p=0.59), or ankle energy generation contribution (p=0.38). Energy generation contribution was significantly greater in the dominant hip (dominant 29.7±8.6%, non-dominant 18.4±6.3%, p<0.001) and non-dominant knee (dominant 22.8±6.8%, non-dominant 36.2±8.5%, p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

High demand on coordination and motor control during the lateral vertical jump and inherent limb dominance may explain different intra-limb strategies for task performance despite jump height symmetry. Non-dominant affinity for stability and dominant compensatory performance may neutralize potential asymmetries. Implications for symmetry in observable outcomes such as jump height must consider underlying internal asymmetries.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Symmetrical findings on functional tasks have underlying internal asymmetries observed here in female adolescent soccer players. The lateral vertical jump may highlight these internal asymmetries (hip- versus knee-dominant movement strategies) due to the high coordinative demand to perform the task. Clinicians should be cognizant of underlying, potentially inherent, asymmetries even when observing functional symmetry in a task.

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE SUBJECT

Female adolescent soccer players are a high-risk cohort for sustaining anterior cruciate ligament injuries. Limb dominance may play a role in the performance of functional tasks, and limb dominance in soccer players is quite specialized: the dominant limb is the preferred kicking limb, while the non-dominant limb is the preferred stabilizing limb (plant leg). Functional performance in female soccer players has been studied in kicking, dribbling, sprinting, change of direction, and jumping - however, these tasks were measured independent of limb dominance. It remains to be seen how unilateral functional tasks may be affected by limb dominance in female adolescent soccer players.

WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE

This study provides data on functional performance relative to limb dominance in female adolescent soccer players, and captures the lateral vertical jump task in both inter- and intra-limb measures. This highlights that intra-limb strategies to perform a coordinated motor task may be different between limbs, herein attributed to limb dominance. Even if gross motor outputs between limbs are symmetrical (i.e. jump height), the underlying movement strategies to achieve that output may be different (hip- versus knee-dominant movement strategies). These findings are important to research on functional performance measures related to attaining between-limb symmetry, as measures of energy generation contribution open the door for a more thorough understanding of joint-by-joint intra-limb contributions during a functional task.

Effects of Dominant and Nondominant Limb Immobilization on Muscle Activation and Physical Demand during Ambulation with Axillary Crutches

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of how limb dominance and joint immobilization alter markers of physical demand and muscle activation during ambulation with axillary crutches. In a crossover, counterbalanced study design, physically active females completed ambulation trials with three conditions: (1) bipedal walking (BW), (2) axillary crutch ambulation with their dominant limb (DOM), and (3) axillary crutch ambulation with their nondominant limb (NDOM). During the axillary crutch ambulation conditions, the non-weight-bearing knee joint was immobilized at a 30-degree flexion angle with a postoperative knee stabilizer. For each trial/condition, participants ambulated at 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 mph for five minutes at each speed. Heart rate (HR) and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were monitored throughout. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to record muscle activation of the medial gastrocnemius (MG), soleus (SOL), and tibialis anterior (TA) unilaterally on the weight-bearing limb. Biceps brachii (BB) and triceps brachii (TB) sEMG were measured bilaterally. sEMG signals for each immobilization condition were normalized to corresponding values for BW.HR (p < 0.001) and RPE (p < 0.001) were significantly higher for both the DOM and NDOM conditions compared to BW but no differences existed between the DOM and NDOM conditions (p > 0.05). No differences in lower limb muscle activation were noted for any muscles between the DOM and NDOM conditions (p > 0.05). Regardless of condition, BB activation ipsilateral to the ambulating limb was significantly lower during 0.6 mph (p = 0.005) and 0.8 mph (p = 0.016) compared to the same speeds for BB on the contralateral side. Contralateral TB activation was significantly higher during 0.6 mph compared to 0.8 mph (p = 0.009) and 1.0 mph (p = 0.029) irrespective of condition. In conclusion, limb dominance appears to not alter lower limb muscle activation and walking intensity while using axillary crutches. However, upper limb muscle activation was asymmetrical during axillary crutch use and largely dependent on speed. These results suggest that functional asymmetry may exist in upper limbs but not lower limbs during assistive device supported ambulation.

STRENGTH AND FATIGUE MEASUREMENTS OF THE HIP FLEXOR AND HIP EXTENSOR MUSCLES: TEST-RETEST RELIABILITY AND LIMB DOMINANCE EFFECT

Background

Standardized testing of hip muscle strength and fatigue in the sagittal plane is important for assessing, treating and preventing a number of trunk and lower extremity pathologies. Furthermore, individuals displaying asymmetries of muscle strength between limbs are more likely to sustain an injury.

Purpose

To evaluate the test-retest reliability of isometric strength and isokinetic fatigue measurements of the hip flexor and hip extensor muscles, and to examine whether there is a significant limb dominance effect on strength, fatigue and flexor-extensor ratios.

Study design

Cross-sectional study.

Methods

To evaluate reliability, 30 healthy individuals (33.2 + /- 13.1 years) were included. On a separate occasion, 24 healthy individuals (29.0 + /- 10.3 years) participated to assess between-limb differences. Reliability was established using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), standard error of measurements (SEM) and minimal detectable change (MDC). Isometric strength (best peak torque of three maximal contractions; Nm/kg), isokinetic fatigue (total work of 20 consecutive maximal concentric flexor-extensor contractions at 120 °/s; Joule/kg), and flexor-extensor ratios, were recorded using a Biodex dynamometer.

Results

Reliability was good-to-excellent (ICCs>0.83) and measurement errors were acceptable (SEM<13.6% and MDC%<37.8%). No significant between-limb differences in strength, fatigue and flexor-extensor ratios were detected.

Conclusions

Isometric strength and isokinetic fatigue of the hip flexor and hip extensor muscles can be reliably assessed in healthy individuals using the Biodex dynamometer. Limb dominance did not significantly affect strength, fatigue or flexor-extensor ratios.

Bilateral difference between lower limbs in children practicing laterally dominant vs. non-laterally dominant sports

Bilateral asymmetry in lower-limb power and dynamic balance has been associated with increased risk of sport injury, whereas there is a lack of research examining this asymmetry for child athletes. Twenty-eight fencers (19 boys and 9 girls, aged 9.71 ± 1.08 years) and 28 Taekwondo athletes (19 boys and 9 girls, aged 9.71 ± 1.08 years) were examined on the single-leg jump and Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) performance. A mixed model design ANOVA (2 [Sex: Boys, Girls] × 2 [Sport group: Fencing, Taekwondo] × 2 [Limb: Dominant, Non-dominant Leg]) was conducted to examine for difference for each test. There was a significant main effect of limb on hop and triple hop distance (p < 0.05). A significant limb by sex interaction (p = 0.000) was shown for the single-leg countermovement jump (CMJ) performance, wherein a bilateral difference was only shown in boys. In SEBT, a main effect (p = 0.007) of limb was identified for posterolateral (PL) reach distance. A limb by sex interaction (p = 0.009) was also shown for posteromedial (PM) reach distance, wherein a bilateral difference was only shown in girls. These findings suggest that child athletes in both laterally dominant and non-laterally dominant sports showed inter-limb asymmetry of leg power and dynamic balance. Sex should be an important consideration when evaluating bilateral difference of leg power and dynamic balance for child athletes.

Comparing the magnitude and direction of asymmetry during the squat, countermovement and drop jump tests in elite youth female soccer players

The aims of the present study were to provide an in-depth comparison of inter-limb asymmetry and determine how consistently asymmetry favours the same limb during different vertical jump tests. Eighteen elite female under-17 soccer players conducted unilateral squat jumps (SJ), countermovement jumps (CMJ) and drop jumps (DJ) on a portable force platform, with jump height, peak force, concentric impulse and peak power as common metrics across tests. For the magnitude of asymmetry, concentric impulse was significantly greater during the SJ test compared to CMJ (p = 0.019) and DJ (p = 0.003). No other significant differences in magnitude were present. For the direction of asymmetry, Kappa coefficients revealed fair to substantial levels of agreement between the SJ and CMJ (Kappa = 0.35 to 0.61) tests, but only slight to fair levels of agreement between the SJ and DJ (Kappa = -0.26 to 0.18) and CMJ and DJ (Kappa = -0.13 to 0.26) tests. These results highlight that the mean asymmetry value may be a poor indicator of true variability of between-limb differences in healthy athletes. The direction of asymmetry may provide a useful monitoring tool for practitioners in healthy athletes, when no obvious between-limb deficit exists.

Soccer Footedness and Between-Limbs Muscle Strength: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Purpose: Limb dominance and consequent between-limbs muscle strength in soccer players should be explored to determine a standard musculoskeletal profile to maintain and establish during screening protocols and postinjury rehabilitation. The primary aim of this review was to identify dominant- vs non-dominant-lower-extremity muscle-strength characteristics of healthy soccer players, with secondary aims to consider available between-limbs outcome measures and directions for future research. Methods: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed. Five electronic databases were used for study identification with guidance from a medical librarian. Inclusion criteria consisted of studies employing a cross-sectional design assessing soccer players of all ages, genders, and levels of play that identified limb dominance and associated lower-extremity muscle strength as a main purpose of the experiment. Results: The literature search identified 3471 articles. After screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, 17 articles were included in the review. Peak torques and hamstring-to-quadriceps ratios via isokinetic dynamometry were commonly used, and subsequent meta-analyses were conducted to yield remarkable between-limbs symmetry. Additional results of individual studies also demonstrate symmetry, except 1 article of velocity-dependent measures that reported greater strength in the dominant limb. Conclusions: In soccer, between-limbs muscle strength measured by maximal isokinetic dynamometry demonstrates symmetry across ages, genders, and levels of play. Future testing using alternative measures that more specifically replicate the movement demands of soccer players may further classify between-limbs characteristics.

Using Unilateral Strength, Power and Reactive Strength Tests to Detect the Magnitude and Direction of Asymmetry: A Test-Retest Design

The aims of the present study were to determine test-retest reliability for unilateral strength and power tests used to quantify asymmetry and determine the consistency of both the magnitude and direction of asymmetry between test sessions. Twenty-eight recreational trained sport athletes performed unilateral isometric squat, countermovement jump (CMJ) and drop jump (DJ) tests over two test sessions. Inter-limb asymmetry was calculated from both the best trial and as an average of three trials for each test. Test reliability was computed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), coefficient of variation (CV) and standard error of measurement (SEM). In addition, paired samples t-tests were used to determine systematic bias between test sessions and Kappa coefficients to report how consistently asymmetry favoured the same side. Within and between-session reliability ranged from moderate to excellent (ICC range = 0.70⁻0.96) and CV values ranged from 3.7⁻13.7% across tests. Significant differences in asymmetry between test sessions were seen for impulse during the isometric squat (p = 0.04; effect size = ⁻0.60) but only when calculating from the best trial. When computing the direction of asymmetry across test sessions, levels of agreement were fair to substantial for the isometric squat (Kappa = 0.29⁻0.64), substantial for the CMJ (Kappa = 0.64⁻0.66) and fair to moderate for the DJ (Kappa = 0.36⁻0.56). These results show that when asymmetry is computed between test sessions, the group mean is generally devoid of systematic bias; however, the direction of asymmetry shows greater variability and is often inter-changeable. Thus, practitioners should consider both the direction and magnitude of asymmetry when monitoring inter-limb differences in healthy athlete populations.

Biomechanical Study of Tandem Stance in Healthy Young Adults: Effects of Weight-Bearing and Limb Dominance

Postural strategies of healthy young adults to control tandem stance were investigated through the calculation of the relative contribution of the two loading-unloading (LU) and pressure-distribution (PD) mechanisms and the two legs for controlling the resultant center-of-pressure (CP_Res) displacements. Weight-bearing asymmetry and limb dominance were also studied. For antero-posterior and medio-lateral CP_Res displacements, LU and PD mechanisms mainly contribute, respectively. A significant LU contribution is nonetheless observed for medio-lateral control, due to a lateral gap between the CP positions under each foot despite a strict sagittal alignment for the two feet. Moreover, for medio-lateral control, the respective involvement of the two legs is related to the level of weight-bearing asymmetry, whereas the front leg mainly controls the antero-posterior sway. By specifying potential effects of body-weight asymmetry and limb dominance, to a better testing of patients with deficiencies in lateral sway control.

Feedforward compensation for novel dynamics depends on force field orientation but is similar for the left and right arms

There are well-documented differences in the way that people typically perform identical motor tasks with their dominant and the nondominant arms. According to Yadav and Sainburg's (Neuroscience 196: 153-167, 2011) hybrid-control model, this is because the two arms rely to different degrees on impedance control versus predictive control processes. Here, we assessed whether differences in limb control mechanisms influence the rate of feedforward compensation to a novel dynamic environment. Seventy-five healthy, right-handed participants, divided into four subsamples depending on the arm (left, right) and direction of the force field (ipsilateral, contralateral), reached to central targets in velocity-dependent curl force fields. We assessed the rate at which participants developed predictive compensation for the force field using intermittent error-clamp trials and assessed both kinematic errors and initial aiming angles in the field trials. Participants who were exposed to fields that pushed the limb toward ipsilateral space reduced kinematic errors more slowly, built up less predictive field compensation, and relied more on strategic reaiming than those exposed to contralateral fields. However, there were no significant differences in predictive field compensation or kinematic errors between limbs, suggesting that participants using either the left or the right arm could adapt equally well to novel dynamics. It therefore appears that the distinct preferences in control mechanisms typically observed for the dominant and nondominant arms reflect a default mode that is based on habitual functional requirements rather than an absolute limit in capacity to access the controller specialized for the opposite limb.

Relationship of the functional movement screen in-line lunge to power, speed, and balance measures

Background:

The in-line lunge of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) evaluates lateral stability, balance, and movement asymmetries. Athletes who score poorly on the in-line lunge should avoid activities requiring power or speed until scores are improved, yet relationships between the in-line lunge scores and other measures of balance, power, and speed are unknown.

Hypothesis:

(1) Lunge scores will correlate with center of pressure (COP), maximum jump height (MJH), and 36.6-meter sprint time and (2) there will be no differences between limbs on lunge scores, MJH, or COP.

Study Design:

Methods:

Thirty-seven healthy, active participants completed the first 3 tasks of the FMS (eg, deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lunge), unilateral drop jumps, and 36.6-meter sprints. A 3-dimensional motion analysis system captured MJH. Force platforms measured COP excursion. A laser timing system measured 36.6-m sprint time. Statistical analyses were used to determine whether a relationship existed between lunge scores and COP, MJH, and 36.6-m speed (Spearman rho tests) and whether differences existed between limbs in lunge scores (Wilcoxon signed-rank test), MJH, and COP (paired t tests).

Results:

Lunge scores were not significantly correlated with COP, MJH, or 36.6-m sprint time. Lunge scores, COP excursion, and MJH were not statistically different between limbs.

Conclusion:

Performance on the FMS in-line lunge was not related to balance, power, or speed. Healthy participants were symmetrical in lunging measures and MJH.

Clinical Relevance:

Scores on the FMS in-line lunge should not be attributed to power, speed, or balance performance without further examination. However, assessing limb symmetry appears to be clinically relevant.

Handedness: differential specializations for control of trajectory and position

Handedness is often portrayed as a nonfunctional artifact of cerebral asymmetry. Our data, however, indicate that handedness reflects cerebral specialization for specific control processes. Each hemisphere/limb system is specialized for different but complementary functions: the dominant system for controlling limb trajectory dynamics, and the nondominant system for controlling limb position.
