Energy and Protein Requirements for the Maintenance of Growing Male Sika Deer (Cervus nippon)

The objective of this study is to study the effects of dietary intake levels on energy metabolism, carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) balance and to determine the maintenance requirements of energy and protein for male sika deer during their growing period. A total of 16 1-year-old male sika deer with similar body weight (BW) (63.25 ± 2.42 kg) were selected, with four animals per feed intake level. The feeding levels of the four groups for deer were 40, 60, 80, and 100% of the recommended amount, respectively. The nutrient digestibility and methane production were measured through digestion trials and respiratory trials. A 4 × 4 Latin Square design was performed in a respirometry trial. The results show that the apparent digestibility of C and N gradually increased as the level of feed intake decreased. Furthermore, with a decrease in feed intake level, the metabolic energy intake (MEI), heat production (HP), and retained energy (RE) of male sika deer significantly decreased (P < 0.01). The requirements of metabolic energy for maintenance (MEm) and net energy for maintenance (NEm) of growing deer are 251.17 and 223.62 kJ kg⁻¹BW^0.75d⁻¹, respectively, as estimated according to the logarithmic regression equations between HP and MEI. The net N requirement for maintenance (NNm) and net protein requirement for maintenance (NPm) of growing male sika deer based on the linear relationship between retained nitrogen (RN) and daily nitrogen intake (NI) were 251.8 mg kg⁻¹BW^0.75d⁻¹ and 1.57 g kg⁻¹BW^0.75d⁻¹, respectively. The NEm and NPm values obtained from this experiment fill the gap in net energy and protein requirements and serve as basic data for establishing the nutritional standards forsika deer breeding in China.

Protein and Energy Requirements for Maintenance and Growth in Juvenile Meagre Argyrosomus regius (Asso, 1801) (Sciaenidae)

The meagre is a carnivorous species and might be a suitable candidate species for the diversification of aquaculture in the Mediterranean region. This is based on its high growth and flesh quality. Nevertheless, there is little information available about its growth rates and nutrient requirements. The objective of this study was to determine the protein and energy requirements of juvenile meagre (Argyrosomus regius). Two trials for different weights of 53 and 188 g were conducted with rations from starvation to apparent satiation with the scope of studying its nutritional needs. In the first trial, the initial mean body weight of the fish was 53 g, and they were fed at feeding rates, measured as a percentage of the body weight, of 0, 0.75, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5%, with two replicates per treatment. In a second trial, another group with approximately 188 g of initial body weight was fed at feeding rates of 0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5%, with two replicates per treatment. The optimum thermal growth coefficient was obtained with a feed intake of 2.2% day^-1 in trial A and 1.73% day^-1 in trial B. The digestible protein (DP) intake for maintenance was determined as 0.57 g kg^-0.7 day^-1, the DP intake for maximum growth was 6.0 g kg^-0.7 day^-1, and the point for maximum efficiency in protein retention was 1.8 g kg^-0.7 day^-1. The requirement for digestible energy (DE) intake for maintenance was recorded at 25.4 kJ kg^-0.82 day^-1, the DE intake to maximize growth was 365 kJ kg^-0.82 day^-1, and the point for maximum efficiency in energy retention occurs with a digestible energy intake of 93 kJ kg^-0.82 day^-1. The requirements and retention efficiency of protein and energy in Argyrosomus regius tend to be within the range other fish species. The maintenance needs are in agreement with species with low voluntary activity and growth requirements in agreement with fast-growth species.

Effects of monensin inclusion and level of intake in limit-feeding strategies for beef cows

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of intake management and ionophore inclusion on diet utilization under managed intake conditions in beef cattle. Two experiments utilized common diets fed at 120% (H) or 80% (L) of maintenance with either 0 or 200 mg/d monensin in a factorial arrangement. Forty cows were fed for 56 d (Exp. 1) to evaluate effects on diet utilization and energy retention; diets were fed to 16 ruminally cannulated steers (Exp. 2) to determine effects on digestion, energy value, and ruminal fermentation. Cows fed H had greater body weight (BW) gain (P < 0.01) and retained energy (RE; P < 0.01), although estimated heat production was also greater (P < 0.01). Monensin had limited effects on overall BW gain (P = 0.97). Monensin had no effect on RE (P = 0.94) or calculated heat energy (HE; P = 0.53) despite effects on diet utilization observed in steers. In steers, L increased (P < 0.01) digestion of dry matter, organic matter, acid detergent fiber, and gross energy (GE) and reduced (P < 0.01) passage rate; monensin did not affect digestion (P > 0.15) but did reduce passage rate (P < 0.03). Monensin lowered (P < 0.01) acetate:propionate ratio and increased (P < 0.05) ruminal pH. Monensin did not alter feed required for maintenance; however, limit-feeding reduced apparent daily maintenance requirement to 62.85 kcal/kg BW^0.75, a 26% reduction from model-predicted values.

Estimation of the net energy and protein requirements for maintenance of male arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) during the growth period1,2

The maintenance requirements of net energy and net protein were assumed to represent the most accurate and important values totally for the animal's utilization. The objective of this experiment was to determine the net energy and net protein requirements for maintenance of growing arctic foxes. The experiments was evaluated using regression models estimated from data collected by means of indirect calorimetry, nitrogen balance trials, and digestion and metabolism experiments. Thirty-six growing arctic foxes (3 487 ± 261.7 g) at the age of 85 days were randomly assigned to four groups with 9 animals in each group. Arctic foxes were fed a complete formula diet at four intake levels (100%, or 80%, 60%, and 40% of feed requirements) from 24 July 2017 to 23 September 2017. Arctic foxes in each treatment were kept individually in respiration chambers after 1-d adaptation at day 2 for a 3-d balance trial and then at day 5 followed by a 3-d fasting period. The metabolizable energy intake (MEI), heat production in the fed state (HP), and retained energy (RE) of arctic foxes significantly decreased (P < 0.01) as the feed intake level decreased. Fasting heat production (FHP) of arctic foxes was not influenced by feed intake level (P > 0.05). The metabolizable energy maintenance requirement (MEm) and net energy maintenance requirement (NEm) estimated from the linear relationship between RE and MEI were 230 and 217 kJ/kg of body weight BW0.75/d, respectively. The MEm and NEm estimated by logarithmic regression of HP on MEI were 225 and 209 kJ/kg BW0.75/d, respectively. The net N maintenance requirement (NNm) and net protein maintenance requirement (NPm) estimated from the linear relationship between retained nitrogen (RN) and daily nitrogen intake (NI) were 179.6 mg/kg BW0.75/d and 1.123 g/kg BW0.75/d, respectively. It is concluded that NEm and NPm values obtained fill the net energy and protein requirements shortage, and provide the basic data for establishing the standard of nutrition demand of breeding arctic foxes in China.

Limit feeding as a strategy to increase energy efficiency in intensified cow-calf production systems

Two experiments were conducted to measure efficiency of energy use in limit-fed cows. In Exp. 1, 32 pregnant, crossbred cows were used to examine the effects of dietary energy concentration and intake level on energy utilization and digestion. In a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement, cows received diets formulated at either 1.54 Mcal NE_m/kg high energy (H) or 1.08 Mcal NE_m/kg low energy (L); amounts of each diet were fed at amounts to achieve either 80% (80) or 120% (120) of maintenance energy requirements. Fecal grab samples were collected on days 14, 28, 42, and 56 for determination of energy digestion and metabolizable energy (ME) intake. Acid detergent insoluble ash and bomb calorimetry were used to estimate fecal energy production. Cow body weight and 12th rib fat thickness were used to estimate body energy, using 8 different methods, at the beginning and end of a 56-d feeding period. Energy retention (RE) was calculated as the difference in body energy on days 0 and 56. Heat energy (HE) was calculated as the difference in ME intake and RE. Energy digestion increased (P = 0.04) with intake restriction. Cows consuming H tended to have greater (P = 0.08) empty body weight (EBW) gain than cows consuming L, but no difference was observed (P = 0.12) between cows fed 120 compared with cows fed 80. Estimates of HE were greater for L than H (P < 0.01) and greater for 120 than 80 (P < 0.01), such that estimated fasting heat production of H (57.2 kcal/kg EBW^0.75) was lower than that of L (73.3 kcal/kg EBW^0.75). In Exp. 2, 16 ruminally cannulated, crossbred steers were used to examine the effects of dietary energy concentration and intake level on energy digestion. Treatment arrangement and laboratory methods were replicated from Exp. 1. Following a 14-d adaptation period, fecal samples were collected, such that samples were represented in 2-h intervals post-feeding across 24 h. Diet × intake interactions were observed for nutrient digestibility. Energy digestibility was greater in steers fed H than in steers fed L (P < 0.01); however, digestibility of each nutrient increased by approximately 10% in steers fed H80 vs. those fed H120 (P ≤ 0.03); nutrient digestibility was similar among levels of intake in steers fed L (P = 0.54). These results suggest that intake restriction may increase diet utilization and that the magnitude of change may be related to diet energy density.

Maintenance Energy Requirements of Double-Muscled Belgian Blue Beef Cows

Sixty non-pregnant, non-lactating double-muscled Belgian Blue (DMBB) cows were used to estimate the energy required to maintain body weight (BW). They were fed one of three energy levels for 112 or 140 days, corresponding to approximately 100%, 80% or 70% of their total energy requirements. The relationship between daily energy intake and BW and daily BW change was developed using regression analysis. Maintenance energy requirements were estimated from the regression equation by setting BW gain to zero. Metabolizable and net energy for maintenance amounted to 0.569 ± 0.001 and 0.332 ± 0.001 MJ per kg BW(0.75)/d, respectively. Maintenance energy requirements were not dependent on energy level (p > 0.10). Parity affected maintenance energy requirements (p < 0.001), although the small numerical differences between parities may hardly be nutritionally relevant. Maintenance energy requirements of DMBB beef cows were close to the mean energy requirements of other beef genotypes reported in the literature.
