Radon exposure and risk of neurodegenerative diseases among male miners in Ontario, Canada: A cohort study

BACKGROUND

Environmental radon has been examined as a risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases in a small number of previous studies, but the findings have been inconsistent. This study aims to investigate the association between occupational radon exposure and neurodegenerative disease in a cohort of male miners with work experience in multiple ore types in Ontario, Canada.

METHODS

Radon exposure (1915-1988) was assessed using two job-exposure matrices (JEM) constructed from using historical records for 34,536 Ontario male miners. Neurodegenerative outcomes were ascertained between 1992 and 2018. Poisson regression models were used to estimate incidence rate ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) between cumulative radon exposure in working level months (WLM) and each neurodegenerative outcome.

RESULTS

Levels of cumulative radon exposure showed variability among cohort members with a mean of 7.5 WLM (standard deviation 24.4). Miners in uranium mines or underground jobs had higher levels and more variability in exposure than workers in non-uranium work or surface jobs. Compared to the reference group (radon < 1 WLM), increased rates of Alzheimer's (RR 1.23, 95% CI 1.05-1.45) and Parkinson's disease (RR 1.43, 95% CI 1.08-1.89) were observed among workers with >1-5 WLM and >5-10 WLM, respectively, but not among higher exposed workers (>10 WLM).

CONCLUSION

This study did not observe a positive monotonic dose-response relationship between cumulative radon exposure and Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease in Ontario mining workers. There was no association observed with motor neuron disease.

Extremely Acidic Eukaryotic (Micro) Organisms: Life in Acid Mine Drainage Polluted Environments-Mini-Review

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) results from sulfide oxidation, which incorporates hydrogen ions, sulfate, and metals/metalloids into the aquatic environment, allowing fixation, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of pollutants in the aquatic food chain. Acidic leachates from waste rock dams from pyritic and (to a lesser extent) coal mining are the main foci of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) production. When AMD is incorporated into rivers, notable changes in water hydro-geochemistry and biota are observed. There is a high interest in the biodiversity of this type of extreme environments for several reasons. Studies indicate that extreme acid environments may reflect early Earth conditions, and are thus, suitable for astrobiological experiments as acidophilic microorganisms survive on the sulfates and iron oxides in AMD-contaminated waters/sediments, an analogous environment to Mars; other reasons are related to the biotechnological potential of extremophiles. In addition, AMD is responsible for decreasing the diversity and abundance of different taxa, as well as for selecting the most well-adapted species to these toxic conditions. Acidophilic and acidotolerant eukaryotic microorganisms are mostly composed by algae (diatoms and unicellular and filamentous algae), protozoa, fungi and fungi-like protists, and unsegmented pseudocoelomata animals such as Rotifera and micro-macroinvertebrates. In this work, a literature review summarizing the most recent studies on eukaryotic organisms and micro-organisms in Acid Mine Drainage-affected environments is elaborated.

[Meta-analysis of the Effects of Metal Mining on Soil Heavy Metal Concentrations in Southwest China]

Metal mining is one of the main contributors of soil heavy metals. Previous studies examining the impact of metal mining on surrounding soil have mainly focused on one or a few metal mining areas. However, such studies cannot effectively inform the management of heavy metal pollution in soil at an inter-provincial scale. As part of this study, literature was collected on soil heavy metals (i.e., As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) affected by metal mining in regions of Southwest China (i.e., Yunnan Province, Sichuan Province, Guizhou Province, Chongqing Municipality, and Tibet Autonomous Region); Next, the impact of metal mining on the soil concentrations of these metals was quantified through meta-analysis, and the relationships between the selected factors (i.e., different sub-regions, metal minerals, and land-use types) and soil heavy metal concentrations were explored. Finally, the literature data was tested for publication bias. The results showed that metal mining in Southwest China has significantly increased the concentrations of heavy metals in topsoil. The different metals were ranked according to their weight effect sizes (ES₊) in the following order Cd > Pb > Hg > Zn > As > Cu > Ni > Cr. Metal mining in both Sichuan and Yunnan led to higher effect sizes of soil Cd (ES_+Sichuan=4.16, ES_+Yunnan=3.20) and Pb (ES_+Sichuan=3.47, ES_+Yunnan=2.54) than those of the other heavy metals, while metal mining in Guizhou led to a higher effect size of soil Hg (ES₊=2.80). The effect size of metal mining on soil heavy metals was higher in cultivated soil (ES₊=1.42) than in forested soil (ES₊=0.50). The mining of lead-zinc and tin significantly increased the concentrations of soil Cd, Pb, and Zn, and the mining of copper significantly increased the concentrations of soil Cu, Cd, and Pb. Of the investigated soil heavy metals in Southwest China, Pb and Zn showed slight potential publication biases (P<0.05). The above results can provide more effective information for the environmental protection of soil in metal mining areas of Southwest China.
