Isothermal Diffusion Behavior and Surface Performance of Cu/Ni Coating on TC4 Alloy

The poor surface performance of titanium alloys substantially limits their application in many fields, such as the petrochemical industry. To overcome this weakness, the Cu and Ni double layers were deposited on the surface of TC4 alloy by the electroplating method, and the isothermal diffusion process was performed at 700 °C to enhance the binding ability between Cu and Ni layers. The isothermal diffusion behavior and microstructure of the coating were systematically analyzed, and tribological property and corrosion resistance of the coating were also evaluated to reveal the influence of isothermal diffusion on the surface performance. It was shown that multiple diffusion layers appeared on the Cu/Ni and Ni/Ti interface, and that Ni_xTi_y and Cu_xTi_y phases were formed in the coating with the increase of diffusion time. More importantly, Kirkendall diffusion occurred when the diffusion time increased, which led to the formation of continuous microvoids and cracks in the diffusion layer, weakening the surface performance of the Cu/Ni coatings. This paper unveils the relationship between the microstructure of the Cu/Ni coatings and isothermal diffusion behavior, providing guidelines in preparing high performance surface coatings.

A computational study on the three-dimensional printability of precipitate-strengthened nickel-based superalloys

This paper presents a computational framework to study the differences in process-induced microvoid and precipitate distributions during selective laser melting (SLM) of two nickel-based superalloys representative of low (IN718) and high (CM247LC) volume fraction precipitate-strengthened alloys. Simulations indicate that CM247LC has a higher propensity to form process-induced microvoids than IN718. Particle sintering is predicted to be strongly influenced by the powder size distribution. For deposition thickness of approximately 40 μm, thermal gradients during cooling are predicted to be larger for CM247LC than IN718 and consequently expect the development of larger residual stresses for a high volume fraction γ' alloy. A coupled mean field/finite-element approach has been used to predict the precipitate distributions across a simple rectangular build and during a subsequent hot isostatic pressing (HIP) cycle. Unimodal and multi-modal particle distributions are predicted for IN718 and CM247LC at the end of the SLM, respectively. A higher volume fraction of γ' is predicted for CM247LC at the end of the SLM process. During HIP, simulations indicate a dramatic increase in the γ' volume fraction in CM247LC, which can result in a reduction in stress relaxation and lead to a ductility drop.

Computational aspects of steel fracturing pertinent to naval requirements

Modern high strength and ductile steels are a key element of US Navy ship structural technology. The development of these alloys spurred the development of modern structural integrity analysis methods over the past 70 years. Strength and ductility provided the designers and builders of navy surface ships and submarines with the opportunity to reduce ship structural weight, increase hull stiffness, increase damage resistance, improve construction practices and reduce maintenance costs. This paper reviews how analytical and computational tools, driving simulation methods and experimental techniques, were developed to provide ongoing insights into the material, damage and fracture characteristics of these alloys. The need to understand alloy fracture mechanics provided unique motivations to measure and model performance from structural to microstructural scales. This was done while accounting for the highly nonlinear behaviours of both materials and underlying fracture processes. Theoretical methods, data acquisition strategies, computational simulation and scientific imaging were applied to increasingly smaller scales and complex materials phenomena under deformation. Knowledge gained about fracture resistance was used to meet minimum fracture initiation, crack growth and crack arrest characteristics as part of overall structural integrity considerations.
