A facile method to fabricate high performance PVA/PAA-AS hydrogel via the synergy of multiple hydrogen bonding and Hofmeister effect

Hydrogels are widely used in biomedical engineering, which often require matched mechanical properties to meet specific demands. Recently, numerous research studies have contributed to tissue engineering hydrogels by soaking strategies to obtain designed properties. Herein, a strategy to fabricate poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid)-ammonium sulfate (PVA/PAA-AS) hydrogel by successively soaking an aqueous PAA solution and (NH₄)₂SO₄ solution based on the synergy of multiple hydrogen bonding and Hofmeister effect is reported, which exhibits remarkable comprehensive mechanical properties: rigidity (elastic modulus: 0.7-3.6 MPa), strength at break (tensile stress: 3.2-12.0 MPa; strain 320-650%), and toughness (fracture energy: 4.5-30.0 MJ m-3). Besides, PVA/PAA-AS hydrogel with unique spring-like microstructure exhibited super-resilience in 30% strain range by energy-transforming mechanism. Compared with pure PVA hydrogel, PVA/PAA-AS hydrogel has the equal excellent cytocompatibility. Therefore, PVA/PAA-AS hydrogel with high strength, modulus, toughness, super-resilience and excellent biocompatibility has potential applications in the soft tissue engineering field such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Tough and Multifunctional Composite Film Actuators Based on Cellulose Nanofibers toward Smart Wearables

Although humidity-responsive actuators serve as a promising candidate in smart wearables, artificial muscles, and biomimetic devices, most of them derived from synthetic polymers could not simultaneously achieve multifunctional properties. In this work, a cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-based film actuator with high mechanical properties, excellent Joule heating, and antibacterial capability is successfully constructed by integrating with Ti₃C₂T_x (MXene) and tannic acid (TA) via a vacuum-assisted filtration approach. Owing to the unique nacrelike structure and strong hydrogen bonds, the tensile strength and toughness of the composite film could reach 275.4 MPa and 10.2 MJ·m^-3, respectively. Importantly, the hydrophilic nature of CNFs and alterable interlayer spacing of MXene nanosheets endow the composite film with sensitive humidity response and extraordinary stability (1000 cycles). With the assistance of MXene nanosheets and TA, the composite film could not only present outstanding Joule heating but also possess remarkable antibacterial properties against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. Benefiting from the above merits, the proof-of-concept smart garment is assembled by the as-prepared film and is capable of regulating humidity and temperature.

Hydrogen Bond Association to Prepare Flame Retardant Polyvinyl Alcohol Film with High Performance

It has always been the goal of flame retardant research to improve the flame retardancy of a polymer efficiently without compromising comprehensive properties such as mechanical properties. For polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), inspired by the multiple hydrogen bonding in spider silk, we design a new type of compound containing phosphorus and nitrogen with multiple hydrogen-bonding reaction sites (N,N',N''-tris(2-aminoethyl)phosphoric triamide (TE)) as it is flame retardant. The dynamic cross-linking structure is constructed, and the hyperdispersion of flame retardancy is achieved by the hydrogen bond self-assembly between TE and PVA, thus the high-performance flame retardant PVA is obtained. With only a 10 wt % addition of TE, the PVA film with a thickness of 0.15 mm can reach the UL94 VTM-0 level, and its tensile strength, ductility, and initial decomposition temperature can be increased by 33, 15, and 12 °C, respectively. In addition, the hydrogen-bonding effect and flame retardant mechanism are characterized and studied. This work overcomes the shortcomings of traditional flame retarding approaches and provides an effective strategy for the preparation of flame retardant polymers with an excellent performance.

Self-Assembly of TbPc2 Single-Molecule Magnets on Surface through Multiple Hydrogen Bonding

The complexation between 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) and 2,7-diamido-1,8-naphthyridine (NaPy) is used to promote the mild chemisorption of a UPy-functionalized terbium(III) double decker system on a silicon surface. The adopted strategy allows the single-molecule magnet behavior of the system to be maintained unaltered on the surface.

Di-methyl-ammonium 2,4,5-tri-carb-oxy-benzoate: an example of the deca-rbonylation of N,N-di-methyl-formamide in the presence of a metal and a benzene-polycarb-oxy-lic acid. Is zirconium(IV) the Tsotsi?

The title salt, C2H8N+·C10H5O8-, was the unexpected product of an attempt to prepare a ZrIV metal-organic framework with benzene-1,2,4,5-tetra-carb-oxy-lic acid (1,2,4,5-H3B4C). In the reaction, the DMF solvent has been decarb-on-yl-ated, forming the di-methyl-ammonium cation, with one proton lost from the tetra-carb-oxy-lic acid. It is proposed that the ZrIV salt acts as a Tsotsi or robber, plundering CO from the DMF mol-ecule. The resulting salt crystallizes with two cations and two anions in the asymmetric unit. An intra-molecular hydrogen bond forms between a carb-oxy-lic acid substituent and the carboxyl-ate group of each of the monodeprotonated (1,2,4,5-H3B4C-) anions. In the crystal, an extensive array of O-H⋯O, N-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds generates a three-dimensional network, with columns of cations and anions forming along the b axis.
